Dogs’ Fox tweets to top of the SEC

OK, this doesn’t quite rank up there with, say, the Naismith Coach of the Year Award.

But congratulations, anyway, to Georgia basketball coach Mark Fox, who has been named the SEC’s “Twitterer of the Year” by the website, which analyzed how all of the league’s coaches use Twitter to communicate with fans and prospective recruits.

The Website praised the “authentic voice” of Fox’s tweets, which obviously are posted by the coach himself, not an aide.

Some recent Fox tweets:

Jan. 1: “Reminder to self . . . Turn the cellphone off on new year’s eve next yr”

Jan. 7: “Play @KY on Sat – former Cat Mark Pope on my staff. He left med school 2 join us & now I know why. I’ve been sick for a week and he can’t help me.”

Jan. 8: “It’s freezing and miserable outside, which reaffirms the 2nd reason I can’t stand hockey. Reason #1: no one scores in double figures.”

Yesterday: “Just saw a list of underclassman FBer’s going out early . . . I think I’ll save that list and read it again in 10 years.”

Fox  has told his Twitter followers that he dunks a basketball on his birthday each year. “So annual birthday dunk approaching,” he tweeted a couple of days ago. “Last year I said that was it so why keep putting my achilles in danger?????”

Today is Fox’s 40th birthday, but apparently the dunk will wait a bit. Late last night, he tweeted: “Just getting back from a HS game – birthday dunk to be postponed because nothing more important than game day.” The Dogs play Ole Miss in Stegeman Coliseum tonight.

Seems to be a classy and professional version of Lane Kiffin (((young, “hip”, using modern tactics to build a team)))

I hope with all of the crazy football coaching news and recruiting fallout people still remember that Coach Fox is doing a fantastic job so far and deserves support. I’m glad he got a little national attention with Calipari and Dicky V’s comments after the UK game at Rupp.

8 pm at the steg for the first home SEC game. Looking forward to this game and the rest of the season.

Go Dawgs!

Mark Fox has brought class, stability, and credibility to the UGA hoops program. Give him time and the basketball program will be at or near the top every year. In addition, he’s just a great guy.

Not sure how long we can keep Coach Fox. He has proven IMHO to be a great hire. Happy Birthday young man and thanks for the hire Damon.

Mark Fox is a nice diversion from all the college football mess happening both within UGA and outside. Hopefully the Dawgs can get on a little SEC role and make a run at the tourney. Probably a tall order to ask, but I think becoming a “bubble team” is possible. Keep up the good work Mark. We understand you weren’t given much to work with.

Great stuff. And if Fox is successful, we can keep him. We have the money, facilities and recruiting for this to be a consistent top program. Plus, his wife is from Augusta. I’m sure she likes being close to home.

Go basketball dawgs! Thanks Tim, now get back to the more exciting football blogs! Anything on the DC search today? Anyone else turn down the job? Any decent leftovers from the Vols staff we could interview? So long Kiffin – short timer!! SEC will always be better than the PAC-10. I guess sunny CA would be better than Knoxville though.

Very excited about the new brand of basketball being played in Athens. Looking much better coached in comparison to the Felton era. Good job Fox keep up the hard work . Beat Ole Miss tonight!

Grantham can take the job and just not show up for work until Dallas is finished playing. It is always done that way. Unless Richt is insisting on him recruiting immediately.

But remember, it is not just a DC, there are two other defense slots to fill. Maybe the plan is to announce all three at one conference.

To all of the Dawg Nation: Let’s get behind Coach Fox and this b-ball team. Damon Evans struck gold when he found our new coach. Coach Fox could teach our football coaches a thing or two about player development…

He is getting the most out of the talent on this year’s team. You can tell that the players are buying into the system. They are starting to figure out his version of the triangle offense and it is beginning to pay off.

This team is going to surprise some people this year with some of the upsets that will take place. Illinois and Tech are just the first two….and they gave Kentucky a tougher game in Lexington than the Gators did last night in Gainesville. Go hoop Dawgs! Beat Ole Miss!

It is time for the Athletic Assn to step up and fund the basketball program. This has the potential to be a GREAT school for hoops, and it is past due. Great recruiting base, great fans, and a great coach. Blow up the Steg and build something new.

January 13th, 2010
10:21 pm

Great effort, but there is just no talent there. Thompkins and perhaps Leslie could start on an upper tier SEC team. I think we’ll see a lot of games like this where they play tough but just don’t have enough to get the win. How did Felton let it get this bad? It’s like scorched earth, he left nothing behind.

January 13th, 2010
10:38 pm

If we could have kept Swanzye and that other shooting guard, we wouldn’t be this bad – both those would have been serviceable Jrs. In the SEC, experience means so much…

dang, the Dawgs haven’t exactly had a kind schedule the last two weeks, have we? Three ranked opponents in a row. Got to be proud, though. 1 win, competitive until the last few seconds of the other two. I think that this program is on the up. If CMF can win with these guys, imagine what he can do with some one and done kids in the upcoming years. I don’t want a lot, but it’d be nice to UGA in the NCAA tournament more than just once in a while.

January 14th, 2010
3:11 am

Say what you want to about our athletic program but from Football to Women’s softball, our coaches are class acts. And they perform pretty well, too. I am the most competitive person you know. But I’d rather be a standard 10-2 with coach Richt than 13-0 with Saban or some of these other bad apples any day!

Give Damon his due for hiring Coach Fox whom no one knew about or cared much for when hired. Here’s an “atta boy” for Damon.

January 14th, 2010
12:51 pm

Give CMF a couple of years to build some depth and the Dawgs will be one of the top teams in the SEC. They are already competing with and beating top 25 teams with a thin roster. And give credit to the student athletes. Those kids believe in CMF and the new system and give 100% the entire game. A nice breath of fresh air for the mens’ BBall program!

And Leslie’s dunk on Cousins will have to go down as one of the best in UGA history!
