Cowboys’ Grantham next target in DC search?

Athens – Hello from Butts-Mehre, where Kirby Smart won’t be coming to work.

All’s quiet here, by the way. No press conference or anything like that is in the works, if you’re wondering.

But on the day after Smart turned down Georgia’s defensive-coordinator job, Mark Richt presumably is about the business of pursuing the next candidate.

And let’s say — in the absence of any new credible rumors at the moment — that’s Todd Grantham, the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive-line coach who is known to have been on Richt’s radar for weeks.

In a search that has been full of complications, Grantham presents another. The Cowboys are in the NFL playoffs, preparing for a game Sunday against Minnesota, and will play a couple more games after that if they keep winning.   Would the Cowboys let Grantham talk about and even accept (although obviously not begin) another job during the playoffs, risking potential distraction? How would a further delay affect UGA’s recruiting, especially with the final sprint to national signing day about to commence? And would the recent success of the Cowboys’ defense put Grantham in bigger demand among NFL teams?

Questions, questions.

But all indications today are that Grantham is the next target in Georgia’s six-week-old search.

Grantham  coached at Virginia Tech (under Frank Beamer and Bud Foster) and Michigan State (under Nick Saban) before a series of four NFL coaching gigs.   His only experience as a coordinator was with the Cleveland Browns.

It is a crucial hire for Georgia’s football program, and Richt has reiterated his recognition of that by aiming high in his targets. Foster,  John Chavis and certainly Smart were already in good, winning situations at schools that, not surprisingly, proved willing and able to compete aggressively with anything Georgia could offer financially.

Foster had 15 years invested at Virginia Tech, and Chavis, although in only his first year at LSU, does not have a history of job-hopping. And while Smart was tempted by the prospect of returning to his alma mater, the fact is he is on track to be a head coach somewhere in a year or two anyway.

So while we wait for the next chapter — let’s call it Chapter 5 after the Foster, Vic Koenning, Chavis and Smart chapters -=- to unfold in this saga, how do you see the story ending?  With Todd Grantham? Or who?

And please follow me on Twitter for the latest UGA news and notes.

There is still Ellis Johnson, Tyrone Nix, Travis Jones, and Grantham

But I will say that a former NFL D-Coordinator who coaches an aggressive 3-4 defense for the Dallas Cowboys would DEFINITLEY be attractive to prospective recruits!

I’m ok with not getting Kirby….dissappointed but ok. He’s a young coach who will most likely be a HC in 2 years or so. So UGA would risk losing him in a few years. Would have been a great hire but hey it didnt happen…..for the third time… Ok so apparently Todd Grantham is candidate number one. Bad thing about that is the cowboys are on a run and that would leave a lot of those defensive recruits swinging in the wind till way to close to or possibly after national signing day. I say target Ellis Johnson at South Carolina, thats one school you can definatley say UGA is in better shape than right now…

It’s got to be Garner at this point. Give him one year…continue the search in the meantime. If it works out, great! We can keep our recruits.

If it doesn’t work out, you have a much wider DC pool next year and you can make a more educated decision. Speaking from experience, RG is just as qualified as our remaining options. Did anyone watch the Shreveport Bowl?

Can’t understand why all the focus on big names for DC. There has to be an up and comer who has good schemes and can motivate young men. This drill has already sent DC salaries around the region through the roof. Go get a relative unknown and give him a shot.

Has anyone seen our basketball coach?? Not too shabby, and definitely not too known.

And how hilarious is it that Tech just lost 4 of the best players in college football??? Would I have admitted that 1 month ago – no way, nor would I say it if they were staying. Good luck nerds…you’ll need it. Those guys alone accounted for 8 of your 11 wins.

It can’t be Grantham & his 3-4 defense – all you UGA fans on the AJC blogs have already said the 3-4 will not work in college. You started saying this after Groh’s name was connected to GT. So Grantham is out
by popular demand of the fans.

I still say Buddy Greene, the Navy DC. If he can be lured away from Navy. He will bring discipline on and off the field.

But it has to be someone who Richt feels he can work with 15 hours a day for 6 months at a time.

For all the people who keep saying, “Fine, just promote Rodney Garner until we get who we want later,” Coach Garner is extremely valuable as a recruiter and does a good job coaching, if you are going to hire him, it’s only fair to give him a regular contract. I hate to see us take a talented coach/recruiter, hire him as DC, to then only demote him in a year. That’s a great way to loose a great asset. If you hire him, you have to give him a fair shot. I certainly think he wouldn’t be worse than Martinez, but are there better options out there? I don’t think CMR can afford to make a mistake on this one, or he may be out in two or three years. Most Georgia fans are fickle!

I’m surprised that so many other people are concerned about the length of this DC search. Richt is making offers to other coaches in very high demand as shown by the respective schools willingness to keep them no matter what it takes. I’m excited CMR is taking this path for a proven DC. I’m sure by now Coach Richt has several more candidates on his list. Whoever he gets will be a good coach and given CMR’s success at UGA so far I’m not concerned at all how long it takes or how it appears to others. Hello Tim,

Why not trying to do an analysis yourself of the top college team defenses year in and year out to identify the defensive coaches of those top programs as possible candidates? That may actually be news worthy, or at the very least, it would be new.

Stop chasing the rumors and start running down some facts. Remember who, what, when, where, and why? Do some research. Find some real, credible candidates. Go Dogs!!

ExDawgBaller,,, People who have played for RG have said he is a good position coach but THRY say he isn’t qualified to be a DC.

For those who have said we are going to lose recruits, we have lost ZERO recruits so far.

ExDawgBaller

January 12th, 2010
2:16 pm

I’m just saying… I’ve played under Garner, Martinez, and VanGorder… I’d place RG between VanGorder and Martinez. The DC role is a practice manager and motivator first and foremost. As long as you have competent assistants that have all bought into the your system… you have a winning formula. We had disconnect between Fabris, Jancek, and Martinez…which is why they are all gone.

Pay up for top-notch assistants and give RG a chance to run the show. BTW…those of you who are posting that RG is not qualified, or not the man… obviously have not played a down of college ball and do not understand the role of a DC or OC in the college game.

I’ll give everyone one guess how many play calls Neil Calloway made for the Dawgs when he was OC. It may also surprise you to hear that the defensive calls were coming down from the booth from non-other than Willie Martinez with VanGorder’s final veto, from 2001-2004. Just saying…

Truth is that no one wants to be an assistant at a 2nd class SEC school. If CMR had of fired Martinez last year there would probably of been more candidates. It is now evident that no one sees UGA as any kind of contender… Maybe they could just dress in all black again and see if that works!

I have no guesses, but hearing about Rick Minter to Miss St got me thinking that there are indeed some credible names floating around that I haven’t considered. I hope Richt has. We won’t know if Smart would’ve been the right guy until he leaves Saban anyway, so I’ll stay optimistic, but we sure could use a guy that makes a splash to hold our recruits and build enthusiasm and confidence in the guys already there. Somebody willing to BLITZ… and have opposing receivers covered!!!

Now half of the posts talk about wanting to kick his as$, not needing him anyway, and saying he can’t really coach it is all Saban. Cmon UGA fans. UGA players are the reason I love the red and black, but our classless fans and how they treat one of our own makes it easy to hate.

In the long run, this frustrating DC search will prove best for a bunch of UGA fans. Imagine if UGA had hired Koenning a month ago. The malcontents that frequent boards like this one would be railing against Richt for not going after one of the guys who recently turned the Dawgs down.

Reality check – UGA is not the be-all and end-all of football programs. I believe it was worth a try for Richt to go after Foster, Chavis and Smart but I would have been extremely surprised had any of them ACCEPTED. Now Richt can turn his attention to guys who will look at UGA as a solid career move rather than a lateral or downward step.

I’m amazed that some of you folks think Chavis, Foster, Smart didn’t come to UGA because they don’t respect or want to work for Richt. Could it be that they happen to be in a great situation and don’t want to give that up?

Just luv them dawgs

January 12th, 2010
2:17 pm

I chalk the Smart, Foster and Chavis situation to due dilligence. They are all experienced DC’s with a solid track record, and there was only a remote chance that Georgia could have gotten one of them from their current jobs. But, even if there only slight chance of getting one of those guys. How could CMR not take it? I believe that Georgia will end up with an outstanding DC. But no matter what, I just love them Dawgs.

Yeah, I also went after Koenning who ended up at Illinois. Ellis who stayed at South Carolina. Muschamp remained at Texas and of the course some UGA alumnist decided to remain a Falcon coach rather than come back to Athens. So what! I over reached to get a great candidate and failed 6 times (7 if you count Smart rejecting me twice). I will find a quality DC eventually!!!

The only downside to all this has been that it reveals to the UGA masses that our beloved school is not quite as nationally reknown as we make it out to be. It is a top 25 program but certainly not top 5. What can the masses expect from a program with only 1 real National title? The other was not by one of the three sanctioned polls of the era we won it and the one that was legit was back in 1980 with arguably the best collegiate player to ever play the game (No Buck…that is not you!). Our fan base needs to come to the reality that we can compete in the SEC East occasionally and maybe on a National level once a decade or so and be happy with that. We still rule this state.

Pull out a list of the top 20 or so defenses in college football over the last few years and offer any one of the coordinators and if the coordinator is not interested ask them about their top assistants or secondary coaches and hire one of them. Not a hard task the longer this drags out the more UGA looks bad and the more recruits start to second guess their commitment even the offensive ones!!!!!

UGA fans kill me with their ideas on this DC matter. There are numerous candidates out there who can do a great job. Coach Richt has focused on big names to try and hit a homerun in the press. He knows his job is on the line with a 7-8 win season in 2010. He wants to score big with the name. Reading the posts of UGA fans, I can see why he needs to do that. You guys are idiots that know nothing about defense, hiring coaches, etc. Seriously, hire Garner and keep looking for a DC in the meantime. Do you live here on earth with the rest of us. I will be shocked if Richt is still in Athens by 2015. I think his program is done. From 2001 to 2005 his players bought in to his system, but these kids now don’t care! They don’t care about UGA pride or tradition. They don’t care if they get blown out by Tennessee or lose at home to Kentucky. Hell, they barely even care about playing for their draft status. When these kids don’t care they DON’T CARE!!! It’s not just a coaching problem at UGA, I think it’s a culture problem. I really do.

The years from 2002-2005 where UGA averaged 11 per season are over and 2007 was an anomaly. You average 2006,2008, and 2009 and you come out to 9 wins, and that’s where the program is right now. The Dawgs are an 8 or 9 win team. They a GOOD team with GOOD talent but not great. And after 9 years and given the current situation in Athens, I don’t forsee greatness happening with Richt.

UGA has a problem with an inflated self image. No one else thinks that they have a program as grand as they do. I suggest that they run an ad in the help wanted section of the AJC and take whoever will work the cheapest. Tech will have a DC long before UGA. All this reminds me of the time Erk Russell said “No Thanks” to the HC job at UGA along with several other high profile candidates. There are classier places to work.

Again – in the long run – UGA not getting Kirby Smart is better for UGA>
Why? – He is on the fast track to take over as HC – another year or two of seasoning – and he will be gone from BAMA.

This is not a big deal – with the exception that it is wearing on the patience of an impatient bunch!

Richt needs to stay the course – and he will find an excellent DC.

Remember – Nick Saban was our #4 offer to be HC at Alabama – and same thing was happening with our fan base getting all cramped up wanting the new coach named asap. Patience dog fans – Patience.

There obviously was not any thought given to counter-offer in case Kirby Smart did decline the offer as any half-way intelligent business person would know that Mal Moore and Nick Saban were not just going to roll-over and play dead but would put an all-out press to keep Kirby Smart on the Alabama payroll. Damon Evans should be fired over this incident as he is suppose to provide the leadership to get these deals done. I, as the majority of the Georgia Nation are pissed-off and tired of execuses and Georgia having to play seconds to Alabama, Florida, LSU, and soon to be Tennessee and Auburn. I was late January early February (help me out Bama fans).
Now, settle down. We sound like a bunch of school girls getting anxious over if we will get an invite to the prom.

There is absolutely no sense at all for anyone to be upset with KS. The guy obviously had a very tough time with this decision and if Bama doesn’t cough up the money, he’s back in Athens. But the guy has worked under Saban for years and it really didn’t make sense after the pay raise for him to come on board. Not to worry Bulldog Nation. This will be a blessing in disguise because we’re going to get a guy that will do a great job and leave after 4 or 5 years just like all the others. That’s the sign of a strong program. That’s life! Now go get DeRuyter and and let him hit the recruiting trail to secure all these great recruits. DAMN!

If K Smart was loyal to his alma mater he would be packing up his crap and heading east. It appears the either a) he is not loyal at all or b) he felt that he was not up to the task at UGA and stay under the comfortable wings of the Sabanator. Anyone who finds fault with Smart’s decision has every right to be angry. He has embarrassed his alma mater and most Dawg fans have removed his name from any consideration in the future. For two people who both played sports at UGA I can not fathom any other explanation for doing what he did. Everyone knows Athens is the greatest college town ever and that once you have UGA in the blood even the Sabanator can’t get it out.

Go get Tommy Spangler at La. Tech. All you people out there are fools for only focusing on the big names. Spangler is just as good of a defensive mind as Krby Smart, Chavis, or Foster. I have been a big Presbyterian fan for years and watched Spangler as a DC and HC. His defenses were always the BEST prepared on the field and played with intensity. Tommy is an excellent motivator and will have his players playing at the highest level. Great DC, but everybody is so caught up in big names they fail to see what a coach can do. Just because he has been in the lower levels does not mean he doesn’t know his stuff. I hope The Dawgs choose to go that direction because I know they won’t go wrong!

In all reality Smart would not have been a good hire, everyone knows Saban runs the defense and gets the athletes. At GA Smart would have been under a major radar and would have more involvement with the football program as a whole(recuiting, Richt’s knowledge of defense over Saban), more than under the control freak Saban. He simply will continue to ride the coat-tail of Saban and land a job probaly within the next two years. Coach Richt really needs to take a look at a lower lever D-I program up and coming coach to consider for the DC and stop giving all these Coaches raises.

Face it, Kirby learned class from his daddy Saban and he uerked us around to get more money and traise his profile. Not a very classy thing to do to your alma mater in my opinion. He should have his degree taken away and replaced with a Bama one. I hear , like everything else Bama, including the nat. champ trophy, you can buy one at Wal Mart. As for Richt, he has botched this big time. Just antoehr example of why he is so ill suited to be a HC in the SEC. But he could still get lucky with a Van Gorder type hire.

I am ashamed of bashing of kirby Smart. So what, he has chosen to stay at a better situation. He is no more of a sellout than Van Gorder going to Jacksonville as a position coach. He even took the Chicken job in ‘08 before the Mike named him DC of of the Falcons. We need to get a grip. Ask notre Dame about “winning the press conference” with some flashy hire. The fact is get a guy that this is a dream for. Not somebody whose looking to jump for a HC job or who we have to twist their arm to get. Big deal Kirby was a good ball player here (except of course for ‘98 Tech game when he missed about a zillion tackles) Vince Dooley was an Auburn guy but he didn’t bolt. Also Ray Goff was an outstanding Georgia man as a player and assistant coach. Coach Richt will find the right guy who fits the “Georgia way” and hopefully we’ll be fine if not so be it. CMR has earned the benefit of the doubt (I was at Georgia from 95-2000, back then just winning a bowl game was huge) It is called perspective people, GET SOME! Sad to see the way dawg fans are savaging and putting down Kirby Smart just cause he wouldn’t return to UGA. Why should he? He just won a bcs title and is an odds on favorite to do it a 2nd time in a row and then stroll out of Bama to a plum head coaching job. Why on earth would he leave a program competing for national titles to come to one that is a sinking ship. I’ve nothing against UGA but that is the cold, hard truth and everyone knows it but dawg fans.

And now all these dawg fans come on with all these putdowns of Smart because he made a business decision and ya hear all the insults that he’s not even the D coordinator. Folks, clam down. How many of the so called top 10 teams year in and year out have a DC that was national news every hour and every day for a month??Hmmm? NO ONE ! They were unknowns, most of them. Look at Auburn’s Chizik where nearly 100% of the Auburn fans one year ago screamed about him and now? He is recruiting well, so they shut the you know what up and I am a DAWG and no Auburn man. They did win the Outback too.

Calm fricking down ……… in fact, how many grads (Not stay at home on their mom’s PC “experts”) even recall Nick Saban at Mich State??? How many even remember that his Dad was a AFL/NFL legend Lou Saban? Hmm? None, I suspect. 10 years ago it would have been Saban Who? “Oh yeah that is his Dad that did” so and so. Point made, Case Closed.

My point is that NEW, CAN’T MISS, ALL WORLD COACHES are made every year and will be always. It is up to Mark Richt ( he makes more money in one year than do most on this blog do in a career, so he cannot be that dumb ) to find ONLY a sharp DC that wants to shoot for the SEC conference and come on board. We shot high and did not hit the target with KS and Chavis, etc.

I agree that Van Gorder should be the guy. He has done a terrible job with the Falcons, and messed up the Georgia Southern program. Sounds like the perfect guy for the dogs, and would force the Falcons to get a legit DC.

Just asking, but dog fans are suggesting almost any defensive coach from winning programs as if every one is just waiting for an opportunity to be in Athens. You would think after a half dozen turn-downs the message would soak in…this is not a prime job. Another factor is that many in the football world realize that if 2010 proves to be the third straight disappointing season for the dogs (and it easily could be)a lot of people are shyying away from joining Richt since he might only have one more year.

The U of Texas Offensive Coach

January 12th, 2010
4:03 pm

Correct me if I am worng but the guy that calls all of the Texas Offense as OC is a former UGA coach under Jim Donnan. Correct me if I am wrong.

Now? The guy is hot. See? He was FIRED and run out of town when Donna was swept out but now? He is like KS and is a high demand guy. Such is life in the NCAA and NFL. When Mack Brown hired him who ever hear of him outside of Donnan’s UGA circle?? NO ONE but MACK BROWN. LLOK AT HIS RECORD now. See? BLah, blah, blah, blah.

All of this blah, blah blah about Kirby Smart and Mark Richt is from folks that never, ever played a down of ball ( I did not ) and NEVER set in on one legit college class even for an audit credit but think that they are fricking NCAA/SEC experts. They side with the hottest team for now like a Tech this is a laughing stock or UT that will be soon on double secret probation.

It is easy to hide behind the anominity of your PC and say things about Mark Richt and UGA. You go to the local mall with your “team’s” colors on and you think that you a e a hot shot but we know better.

If you do that, then ask one question ……..can you EVER HOPE TO EARN what he makes in a year??? Have you ever played college ball in the SEC or even in Pop Warner???

If not, your opinions matter not.

Why is NOBODY mentioning Manny Diaz? I know with him from a smaller school, the choice of him moving would not be a “lateral move” (forgive me) and the money would have to be much better than what MTSU could match, I would assume. The guy coaches aggressive defense and I like that. I don’t know enough to be impressed or not with Grantham. I think fundamentally, coaching defense in the NFL’s not much different from college, but just about every other aspect of it is different, so I just don’t know. One thing I do know is I’m sick and tired of reading and writing about this.

Zeb, I am still trying to get Tim Tucker to spell the offers that we made to Chavis, Koerning and Foster. I find it interesting that all these guys “spurned” UGA for pay raises to stay where they were. What the hell did we offer these guys. All the AJC reporters are saying that we have been turned down by these guys. I thought the only offer made was to Kirby. IMO he might have been a great hire. I thought that he might be able to move up when Richt steps down to do his missionary work. But maybe he isn’t quite ready yet and he didn’t want to make any mistakes by moving too soon. I kid him about Saban’s apron strings but he is in a great position at this point and I wish him future success (unless he is playing against the dawgs).

There are a lot of experienced DC’s. Defensive coaches that could come in and do a terrific job. The AJC seems to be poised to report the negative and stir the pot on who. I love the way Richt is handling the situation, he has done a fantastic job keeping it quiet and he made a great offer to his #1 target so I know UGA (Adams, Evans and Richt) are taking this seriously. I was definitely glad to see that. I have faith that Richt will get the right guy no question. It may be somebody we are not familiar with. Smart out, so Georgia wants Grantham
Posted by Evan Silva on January 12, 2010 3:38 PM ET

ESPN’s Chris Low reports that Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart turned down Georgia’s offer of a three-year contract paying $750,000 per year to take the same position on the Bulldogs’ staff. Smart wants to be a head coach.

Georgia coach Mark Richt has reportedly now made Dallas Cowboys defensive line coach Todd Grantham his primary focus.

Grantham, 43, has a fairly impressive resume. Not only does he have a long history with the 3-4 defense Richt intends to implement, the Nick Saban disciple was the Cleveland Browns’ defensive coordinator from 2005-2007 and was targeted by Saban to coordinate the Miami Dolphins’ defense prior to that. Grantham also coached up the Indianapolis Colts’ defensive line from 1999-2001, a period during which the team went 29-19.

According to Low, Grantham is “very interested” in the position at Georgia, but wants to wait for the Cowboys’ playoff run to end before committing. Of course, Grantham and Richt could always reach a wink-nod agreement so the move wouldn’t serve as a distraction in Dallas.

Either way, it appears Richt has found his new defensive boss, and it’s just a matter of time before the marriage is finalized.

After Martinez was fired, Richt turned to 2 grad assistants for the Texas A&M game. How was Georgia’s defense in that game? Well? Do we need to pay someone $500k? Promote the graduate students. They are 1-0 and both could be hired for much less than some “big” name. Sounds like a plan to me.

I knew it would come to this circus after Willie was let go, which by the way I agreed with. I am not going to blame Coach Richt for going after Coaches he thought would elevate his program, but I doubted, that Bud Foster would leave after so many years at Virginia Tech, and that Kirby would leave despite Georgia been his Alma Mater. I wrote recently that Kirby would not necessarily have success at Georgia, because Richt was not a defensive coach and so could not help him like Saban can. Despite the accolades Kirby Smart is still a young coach and a veteran like Saban can provide meaningful input from time to time. For all the above I may be the only Bulldogs Fan that is happy Kirby is not coming. I truly believe that if Grantham will recruit he will prove valuable to the program, and if he does not come there must be someone available with College plus NFL experience.

January 12th, 2010

Is there any hard evidence to support the assertion that Kirby Smart (or anyone else) was actually offered the UGA DC job? Read the Kirby Smart and Alabama statements again. They are very carefully worded…and there’s a lot of innuendo… BUT, if one reads the statements word-for-word and literally, it is never stated that Smart was offered the job…or that Richt (or anyone else from UGA) even discussed it with him. Not to mention that, since this was a written statement, Kirby did not have to answer any direct questions. I certainly don’t know the truth, and wonder if any of the reporters really know, either. The whole story could have been a carefully orchestrated (and very “smart”) effort to get a raise…and Alabama and Saban then utilized the rumors as an opportunity to embarass UGA a bit.

What?

January 12th, 2010
5:53 pm

NEVER WIN A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP? How do you know this? Every team/coach needs to get lucky and catch some break – Urban, Saban, Mack, Pet — all got lucky and had near misses – you can’t win without players CMR has them, you have to get good coaches and CMR has them and he will find a quality DC – but most of all to win it all you need some luck. stay healthy and catch some breaks during the season. Stop with the NEVER – its just nonsense.

Please, Coach Richt.. DON’T offer the job to Grantham. He was fired from his last job because he helmed the worst Defense in the NFL. So, again I ask that you pass on him.

The best candidate for the job (now that Smart is out of the picture) is Tim DeRuyter. He is a great strategist who sculpts his schemes to match the Offensive he is facing. He is every bit as good as Kirby Smart. He only needs a bigger program than Air Force to showcase his talent.

Kippy Brown is the interim head coach for the Tennessee vols.

Mike Hamilton, vols’ AD, you are a joke, have been, and continue to be.

And, what is this that the students in Knoxville started a fire to keep Lame Kitten in Knoxville by leaving their trailers to burn their mattresses ? Hillbillies.

Please come back in here and put a spin on this vols’ fans.

I can’t wait.

Tell us all again of your moral victories ?

Lame Kitten 7-6 one season who beat no Final AP Poll or USA Today Coaches’ Poll Top 25 team, gone. When he was at USC, he was NEVER the Offensive Coordinator. That was 2 other guys, both now gone. Norm Chow UCLA now who was then replaced by Steve Sarkisian who left after last year to Washington. He was their assistant and he grinded on the players, other coaches, and media the whole entire time at Southern California and all the other places he stayed for a year thereafter, too. An impetuous impatient child smart-aleck know-it-all Spoiled Brat, and a huge big loose cannon who will step in at USC for all their NCAA Major Violations including Reggie Bush’s Court Trial which finally comes up with Sworn Statements finally now. And, the added issue of now not only Reggie Bush’s Mansion provided to his entire family under market value, but now too yet the rift between Pete Carroll and USC AD Mike Garrett over tailback Joe McKnight’s illegal use now of a vehicle not in his name. A Land Rover. At least at USC, it’s a Mansion and a Land Rover. Nice perks. Lame Kitten will fit right in there. These NCAA sanctions will happen this year. Why did Pete Carroll leave for a lousy Seattle team when he is failed as an NFL Coach at New England and the Jets 33-31 record ?

Lame Kitten Fresno State Quarterback who NO ONE LIKES, who NEVER was the Offensive Coordinator at USC. Never. Pete Carroll was the Defensive Coordinator, make no mistake of that, just like Nick Saban. At UGA, all we have is a damn CEO whose only job responsibility anymore is to hire a “coaching staff” which he has been totally miserable at doing for 10 years now this season.

Coach Richt Era 17-19 vs. Final AP Poll Top 25 teams in 9 years plus another 8 Losses to teams not even ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 25, including David Greene 8-9 vs. LSU, Florida, vols, and Auburn. David Greene was 9-8 vs Final AP Poll Top 25 teams but dropped 2 games Losses to teams not even ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 25.

It’s NOT like we are something great s c dawg.

And, the problem is and has been the “coaching staff” all hired by Coach Richt including his first hire of Rodney Garner December 20, 2000. Brian VanGorder’s Falcons defense sucks. No coach with any NFL experience not 1 coach 1 day. Losing record against Final AP Poll Top 25. The real teams we played each of 9 years now. Only 3 wins against teams in the Top 10 of the Final AP Poll Top 25 in 9 years, and only 1 of those is David Greene. His 1st win which he never duplicated. The offensive woes of this Coach Richt Era are Legendary for all 9 years. Even the 2 years we did play Knowshon Moreno and not redshirt him again that year, we handed him the ball 13 times only in loss after loss after loss. Then, we actually run the ball against GA tek and low and behold, we win a game – so we KEEP Mike Bobo. I’m sorry Willie Martinez and Jon Fabris are hardly all our issues on this “coaching staff.” Which 1 is in charge of the 121 suspensions/arrests in 9 years now of the Coach Richt Era ? Who teaches a position as position coach who actually played that position as a damn player ? No one. Who is in charge of kick-offs and returns ?

vols of course, should have kept Chief. I tried to tell them that. I tried to tell Coach Richt to snap him up then too.

s c dawg, though knows so damn much more about all this than all of us and than God Above.

DISNEYdawg.

By the way, like UGA’s DC, Lame Kitten was Choice Number 4 at USC who finally settled on Lame Kitten after 3 whiffs. It is no better for him than it is for whomever Coach Richt gets off his butt and hires as his 4th Choice.

Don’t let the trailer trash door hit you on the backside on the way out Lame Kitten, you failure at 12-22 as a head coach all-time. He will do better in the PAC-ZERO which is why he left.

Granddad Monte Kiffin, Defensive Coordinator, gone.

Ed Orgeron, Recruiting Coordinator, gone.

After all you said in here about how great Lame Kitten is, please put a spin on this for me vols’ fans. I eagerly await your B.S. now about Lame Kitten’s FAILURES, totally after all your attempted DEFENSE of him HERE.

Go ahead. Defend him again, or make an about-face and agree with me all along that the jerk Lame Kitten is a sorry NOTHING of a Coach and person. How is his entire only recruiting class, put in jail over armed robbery, drugs, alcohol, and weapons charges, doing ? Been by to see them at the jail, or are you waiting to leave your trailer only to burn your mattresses to keep Lame Kitten there. God Almighty. And, what now becomes of the NCAA Investigation of just 2 weeks ago of Lame Kitten’s orange Kittens leaving campus to pursue Ed Orgeron’s recruits ?

I don’t care that you obviously now will end up with a better coach; I just want you to admit The Spoiled Brat Little Monster is gone and that you burned your mattresses to keep him there you Hillbillies – along with the fact that I told you so, and you DEFENDED Lame Kitten : Choose : Defend him AGAIN, Admit I was right all along. Where is his win like our win over GA tek ?

UGA would look real bad if they hired garner at this point. Richt has already announced that garner is not in the discussion, and hiring him will be saying that UGA can’t hire anyone. BTW, the interior Dline which is what he coaches has underperformed for the talent that has been there. Not to mention if he wasn’t just a strong recruiter he would’ve been fired also, I want a coach as DC, not recruiter.

If grantham is the guy it needs to go ahead and be announced. I don’t see how it would distract the cowboys that much, he’s just the dline coach. Tell him that uga just needs to announce it, then that’ll be it until the cowboys are done. UGA could get a big boost in recruiting right now if they had a DC with kiffin leaving UT.

Great job Richt on finishing well. After going 4-4, Georgia climbed from #56 to #26 on the USA Today rankings. I predicted it would happen and Richt pulled it off. Ana amazing finish to a tough year where we lost our start QB and RB to early NFL draft.

Funny, we didn’t even make the final top 30 in the ESPN poll. ESPN has an ANTI-GEORGIA Bias. USA Today got it closer, I’d rank us about 11 or 12, because we beat Tech, should be higher ranked than Tech.

I agree that there is no reason that Grantham cannot go ahead and commit and let UGA announce it. He can finish the playoffs with Dallas. I will never have any respect for Kiffen, what he did was wrong and I place him in the same category with petrifiedtrino.

Next in line, please......

January 13th, 2010
10:20 am

Heard some disturbing news this morning, and my question is how involved is Damon Evans in this mess. Here’s the rumor:

* Foster was Richt’s #1, but the limit was $650K/year. VT upped the ante.
* Koening (spelling?) initially got a whopping $300K but that was upped to $400K. Had already signed with Illinois and a lawsuit was threatened.
* Chavis was initially offered $500K, but that was later increased. LSU exceeded UGA’s offer.
* Smart – everyone knows about that debacle, but the offer was $700K/yr.
* Tyrone Nix was offered $250K, but that is now up to about $400K.
* Grantham will take in excess of $800K.

These salaries are all over the chart. If this is correct, then who in the hell is in charge of setting the pay for this position? Is it Richt, Evans, Adams, or some combination? This is turning into a joke.

David Pollack?

January 13th, 2010
10:36 am

The problem is that David has no coaching experience yet. I’d love to see him come on at Georgia as a defensive assistant (coaching linebackers or something) and start learning the ropes. I think we’d all love to see David Pollack do this. He’s one of the greatest Dawgs of all time! We all love him! His aggressive desire and never quit attitude would be a perfect fit for a defensive coordinator. He seems like he’d be another Erk Russell. But he’d need to get the experience first!

NO David Pollack

PEOPLE, QUIT BRINGING UP DAVID POLLACK!!!!! He has repeatedly said on Twitter he does NOT want to coach. At all. Ever.

I’m glad CMR is looking for the best DC available. He’s gone after the top guys and will continue till he gets a quality guy.

I feel bad for UT. Phillip Fulmer was atleast a class act and dedicated to the players, etc. Kiffin is a clown.

Define the word disarray

UT is in disarray and UGA will find a fine, up and coming HDC coach. I can name many, many guys that were relatively unknown when hired for BIGGER JOBS. Auburn hired Chizk and now? He is on top of one of the best recruiting classes in a long, long time at Auburn or anywhere. I am no War Eagle fan. Chizk makes my point. Yes, he is a HC but there are many of unknowns looking to move up and yes, move up to a winning program of 13 in a row 8 + win seasons.

ONLY UGA can claim that status. No, we have not won one NC in 30 years but we are holders of that fine 8+ win record. No one else can say that. UGA grads LOVE the U of Georgia and we love em win or lose.

2010 will be a fun, exciting year for us UGA grads. By the way, if you bad mouth UGA or any school and have never even driven up to the place, then your comments are invalid. Worthless, as you do not know of what you speak.

Go Dogs.

Feel better now Saint K? You know, longevity is what makes the world go around and around. UT? 13 montsh and bye bye. UT IS the current laughing NCAA national stock as their incoming and 2009 recruits are too. Laughing stocks and about to be on double, secret triple probation and all because you all got punked by a twirp coach. Fools and hillbillys, Blame’s wife hated those Kingston Pike retail car repair stores, muffler shops, anyway, I heard.

Gone he is and y’all are left at the alter like an ugly, red headed, pimple faced bride. Your recruits?? They will be bolting in droves and this will show up in three years with a lousy season then and in 2010 and likely 2011. Too bad …………….Kiffen punked you hillbillys. Whne you play you pay.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA and see y’all in Athens with our TWO GREAT QBS and wideouts, r. backs and O line. See ya. Defense at UGA VS UT??, we will not need it. HAHAHAHAHA

Hey guys, lay off the UT fans. Sure they were pretty quick to rub our noses in that debacle in Knoxville a few of months ago and they managed to rationalize that a-hole of a coach because he was their a-hole. But no sense in stating the obvious – they screwed up and they know it. Doubt if they’ll do than one again.

Like so many things in life that go wrong – there’s one question that inevitably gets asked and only one response that’s necessary: ‘What in hell were you thinking?…and…’It seemed like a good idea at the time’. Right Vols?

UGA needs to think like a military General. We need to see the whole UT mess as an opportunity. UGA’s search for a DC has been a debacle. If CMR has no real idea who it is going to be, then he needs to promote Garner, solidify our staff, and go after some of those recruits that UT had committed.

Richt’s looking for:
Loyal
Championship experience

How about instead of bashing Richt, why not be part of the solution and start suggesting some guys who are loyal, and experienced, researching to find out if they’d listen, and THEN posting.

Message to Coach Richt, I know this has entered your mind but how about David Pollack for DC? His personality, enthusiasm, knowledge of he game at the highest level and his personal character would make up for his lack of experience as a coach. After all, he did make All American his freshman year when others are extremely fortunate just to make 1st string as a freshman. I just haven’t read any conversations about his becoming CD. It would truly be a bolt from the Blue (Red and Black). Someone that would lift the spirits of every Dawg in the Dawg nation.

I can’t believe more isn’t being said about Grantham’s PATHETIC record……How can we be pursuing someone as our new #1 choice with a resume like THIS:

Todd Grantham, VT Alum:

1 Virginia Tech (1990-1995) – DL Coach
2 Michigan State (1996-1998) – DL Coach
3 Indianapolis Colts (1999-2001) – DL Coach
4 Houston Texans (2002-2004) – DL Coach
5 Cleveland Browns (2005-2007) – DC Coordinator: He was fired on January 11, 2008 after the 2007 season with the Brown’s defense ranking 25th against the pass, 27th against the run, and 30th in total-yards-against among 32 teams. Todd is currently serving as DL coach for the Dallas Cowboys.

THAT’S what $800k+ buys UGA Football now??!?!! Disgusting! He was FIRED from his only DC position for performance FAILURE! He started as a DL Coach in 1990 and 20 YEARS later, that’s where he is again. This is a freakin train wreck waiting to happen and I can’t believe he’s even being discussed as a candidate.

Tim, how about some thoughts from you on the transition from a 4-3 to a 3-4 for us, which apparently would have been the case even if Smart had taken the job? Would this work well for the Dawgs given our current personnel?

We need to pursue Ellis Johnson, he would see the option of getting out from under the shadow of Spurrier as a blessing. He could revamp the defense with his aggressive techniques and tenacious blitz packages. Look at what he has done with middle of the road talent at USC. Ellis Johnson is the answer to all our needs and I hope that Mark Richt see’s it soon!

Here’s a fun rumor: Mr. SEC.com is hinting strongly that UT is about to name Will Muschamp its new head coach and Rodney Garner as his DC. Hope that doesn’t ruin anyone’s day (if it’s true, of course), but that site is pretty solid in many ways.

Hey Louie, Get a clue about things. I’m a Tech fan who’s memory goes back to ‘58. Tech was in the SEC, Atlantans were all natives and Tech fans and the real rivalry was with Alabama. We took beating Georgia for granted in those days. I miss the hell out of ‘em. It will never be that way for us again, so just accept it. What are you doing on the doggies blog, anyway?
