Richt on DC hire: ‘I’ll let you know when it happens, I promise.’

As Georgia appeared on the verge of hiring a new defensive coordinator, the Bulldogs’ best defensive player, Rennie Curran, announced on a teleconference late Sunday afternoon that he is leaving school early for the NFL.  Which provided an opportunity, of course, to ask Mark Richt about Kirby Smart.

“I’ll tell you what I’ve been saying all along: that I’m not going to make any comments on the [DC] search until I get my guy,” Richt said.

And is getting his guy  imminent?

“I’ll let you know when it happens, I promise,” Richt said.

Earlier Sunday, ESPN.com reported that Smart — the Alabama defensive coordinator — had not decided whether to accept a UGA offer of a multi-year contract at $700,000-plus per year and that Alabama had told him it would “do everything necessary to keep him.”

While basically silent on Smart,  Richt had a lot to say  about Curran, the junior linebacker who announced the end of his UGA career.

“Rennie has been nothing but awesome for Georgia since the day he got on campus,” Richt said. “He’s been a great teammate; he’s been a great student of the game; he’s really done everything you ask him to do. He’s . . . been a blessing to me personally.

“I wish Rennie well. I think Rennie will do well. He’s a tackling machine. He always has been. I don’t care what level of ball he plays at, he’s going to be that torpedo that can hit.

“I just want to tell him thanks for everything he did for us.”

Kirby has in his hands a contract from UGA. You know that Smart had things that he wanted in his contract, in other words they have been negotiating. UGA met what smart wanted and their will be an announcement tomorrow or Tuesday. Welcome back to Athens Smart family!!!!

No way Smart is coming. That is great money but he already knows that the job has been offered to multiple coaches and turned down. The position is damaged goods. We may be better off getting a young up and comer for the role

Man will I miss seeing #35 out there for the Dawgs.

Tougher decision: Kirby or Rennie?

Remember: If Smart does not come to UGA as DC, it’s not the end of the world. Richt will get somebody worthy and they will be better than WM.

I don’t know about Smart guys. The timing of this news kind of says something. Rennie obviously waited long enough to see who was brought in as DC. Clearly, the offer has been made to KS and now Rennie declares for the draft. This tells me that KS is not coming so CMR now has to back to the drawing board and find a new candidate. This is a process that will obviously not get done before the draft deadline so it’s now in the best interest for Curran to leave. I was telling everybody that waiting on KS was too big of a risk to take, now its desperation mode. But what do I know. Thanks for the memories Rennie and best of luck at the next level. I will be a fan of yours as long as your career lasts.

Not sure Chuy, there was talk that Curran might stay if an NFL coach, like Grantham were hired, because he might could improve his value. Smart doesn’t necessarily help Curran like an NFL coach could have. This could mean good news if you want Smart. I’d be happy with Smart or Grantham. This is just the process it takes, remember the fiasco Bama went through before hiring Saban, and I’m NOT taking a shot at Bama, its just part of the business. Hang in there . . .

No, I don’t think the DC candidates had much to do with Curran leaving. He is doing what he thinks is best for his family situation. Richt doesn’t make his plans based on what he might read on these blogs. Trust him to make a GREAT hire for the Dawgs. All will be well!

Shannon, do you have link or a source?
What I meant to say was that Rennie waited this long to see if there was a hire at DC in place before the draft deadline. What if there’s not a solid guy out there yet commited to taking the UGA DC job. That could have factored into Curran’s decision.

DawgPound-
Why don’t you quit hiding behind that fake-a$$ user name? Do you think if you put “Dawg” in there you can sneak around behind our backs without anyone catching on?

You don’t use words like WE, US, and OUR and then post anti-UGA sh!t like this team is made up of “damaged goods”!
And if you slice up our DC position, that is an attack on THE TEAM as a whole!

If you want to post crap like that on this blog then at least have the ba11s to let everybody know who you really represent. Otherwise shut up!

You are not a DAWG.

Like Alabama we will be losing a lot of talent to the NFL or graduation but you can bank on one thing…We have Smart in the bag! His Georgia blood is simply too strong. He can rebuild the Dawg defense as easily as the Bama D and Bama will not offer more money than we just offered. He will be a strong candidate to be the Head honcho next December when we force….I mean when Richt decides to take on mission work.

Curran’s decision had nothing to do with Smart. I think he really wanted to stay, but he has a kid and he needs the money, period. I personally think that Rennie can play in the NFL. Maybe on ST or as a weak side backer in the 3-4. Probably second or third round at best. His size is the only negative on his resume.

Tuggle played almost 20 years at 5′11″ and 245, but Curran will not measure more than 5′9 3/4″ and about 230.

I wish him nothing but the best.

Dang we’re gonna miss you Rennie. I’ve never seen a defensive player with the non-stop motor and attitude that you possess, except David Pollack. And that’s dang good company to be mentioned with. Thanks so much for the three years of service you’ve given the Dawgs and us the fans. Hope we can gain a commitment from another recruit with the exact same tenacity and heart of Rennie. Best of luck in the NFL, and I look forward to seeing you play on Sunday’s.

You can have Smart. Everyone knows Saban is the DC at Bama. Didn’t you hear the announcers doing the NC game the other night? They correctly called it – Saban’s defense. If Smart wishes to go to an irrelevant program, go for it. One national championship in over 100 years of playing football. What a joke.
