(Updated 9:30 p.m.)
Kirby Smart, the defensive coordinator of newly crowned national champion Alabama, apparently is considering a return to Georgia, his alma mater, for the same job but considerably more money.
Smart, seen as a leading candidate for the UGA position since the Dec. 2 firing of Willie Martinez, was weighing a formal offer on Saturday but “has neither signed it nor made a decision regarding the opening,” according to the Tuscaloosa News, which cited “multiple sources.”
Smart has been publicly coy about his interest in the job but left the door open during a press conference in California two days before the national-championship game. He could not be reached for comment Saturday.
Georgia had no comment on the matter other than to say that no announcement of a hire was scheduled. Associate athletics director Claude Felton said he had not heard from coach Mark Richt all day and that no announcement was expected through Saturday night. Felton said Richt had been on the road recruiting.
Smart would be a popular hire in Bulldog Nation. Former UGA defensive great David Pollack posted on his Twitter account Saturday: “From what I am getting guys I think Georgia has made a very SMART choice on their next DC, nothing 100% but def looks good.”
Smart makes about $360,000 in base salary at Alabama. Georgia is believed willing to pay much, much more than that.
All indications are that UGA will make a hire within the next few days. Richt would like to have the new defensive coordinator named before the final recruiting contact period starts Friday. Also, junior linebacker Rennie Curran -– expected by most around the Georgia program to enter the NFL draft –- has been trying to withhold a final decision until he has a chance to talk with the new coordinator.
Smart played defensive back for Georgia from 1995-98, making All-SEC as a senior, and began his coaching career as an administrative assistant at Georgia in 1999. He also coached running backs at UGA in 2005.
For most of his coaching career, Smart has worked under Nick Saban -– at LSU (2004), the Miami Dolphins (2006) and Alabama (since 2007). He has been the Tide’s defensive coordinator the past two seasons.
Saban seemed to be sending a pointed message to Smart on Friday when he said at a news conference that assistant coaches should not make lateral career moves.
“I’m not pleased when guys make lateral moves because it’s a little bit human nature to think, like my dad used to say, the grass is always greener on top of the septic tank,” Saban said. “You always think it’s better someplace else. You kind of let your ego get involved, and you make moves that you shouldn’t make and really aren’t in your best interests for a career standpoint.”

Bama fans are choking with shock. Tx Tech is saying that Turbeville is taking the LB coach from bama and that guy was one of TT’s players @ Auburn. When KS takes more of them with him to Athens, Bama will have to scamble to find a staff in time for their spring games.
Wait and see ……………..THEN, THEN HE will ANNOUNCE his decision to leave Bama for NO SEPTIC TANKS IN HOLLYWOOD at USC. THSI FACT is why the D coaches at Bama are bollting as they know NS is gone bye bye.
Maybe Francione will come back. HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA He HATED SPETICS all over Alabama.

This means no disrespect to Bama fans but Saban’s comments are funny. He is a great coach but he bails left and right for a few extra bucks and has no loyalty whatsoever to any program. However, if someone else bails for more money he calls it a lateral move. What a joke!

SAN ANTONIO — The Florida Gators have what is already the nation’s top-ranked recruiting class. Apparently, that’s not good enough. After landing three more of the nation’s top players during the Army All-American Bowl, the Gators are assembling one of the best recruiting classes of all time.
One week after scoring defensive tackle Dominique Easley (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) and receiver Chris Dunkley (Pahokee, Fla./Pahokee) during the Under Armour All-America Game, the Gators earned commits from DT Sharrif Floyd (Philadelphia/George Washington), ATH Matt Elam (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Dwyer) and five-star DE Ronald Powell (Moreno Valley, Calif./Rancho Verde).
Florida now has 24 commitments in the 2010 class, including 15 from the ESPNU 150. The impressive haul includes three five-star prospects and 13 four-star prospects, not including postgraduate four-star athlete Travon Van (La Mesa, Calif./Milford Academy).
A refresher course for those calling for Smart to come "home"

Smart began his coaching career with the University of Georgia in 1999, serving one season as an administrative assistant. He then moved to Valdosta State where he spent two seasons as defensive backs coach then being promoted to defensive coordinator in the 2001 season. Between the 2002–2003 football season, Smart was a graduate assistant under Bobby Bowden at Florida State. Smart spent one season in 2004 under LSU head coach Nick Saban. Smart then moved back to the Georgia Bulldogs football program as he served as the team’s running backs coach for the 2005 season. His only season in the NFL occurred in 2006 in which he served under Nick Saban again, this time as Miami’s safeties coach.
In January 2007, Smart once again followed Nick Saban after Saban was named the head football coach at the University of Alabama. On January 9, Saban named Smart as an assistant coach[2]. On February 27, 2008, Smart was promoted to the team’s defensive coordinator.[1]
On December 8, 2009, Smart was awarded the Broyles Award for the nation’s best assistant coach. He is the first Alabama assistant coach to win the award.

You know I really hope Kirby Smart is reading this blog. Sir, are these the kind of fans that you want to try to please daily over the next 3 years? Ones that will micro manage every decision you make (with perfect hind sight vision) and rip you to shreds here publically? Do you want to leave a fan base that crams 92,000 fans into a spring game and gain one where half the fans stage a walk out in the 3rd and 4th quarters with your team, down by only six points? Do you want fans that support you like the Bear even when you make a mistake or two or ones that have Damon Evans and Michael Adams cell phone numbers and email addresses and enjoy sharing tail gate stories where they contacted both of them to get you fired? Is this something you REALYY want to subject your wife and young children to? A lot has changed since you were there last. Think it through.

If Saban goes anywhere it will not be to Southern Cal. Please read the news. USC will be on probation soon enough for Tim Floyd, Reggie Bush, OJ Mayo, Jeff Trepagnier and Rodney Guillory violations.
Kevin Steele of Clemson. You should have stayed and maybe you would have a NC on your resume. Now you are with a middle of the road program called Clemson. And can you believe Ron Middleton left to go to Duke of all places after BAMA went 7-6 Saban’s first year. He did not believe Saban could work the MAGIC.
Case in point: It is not always greener on top of the SEPTIC TANK CALLED ATHENS. Kirby Smart will have done more harm to his resume for the extra bucks.
The difference between BAMA and UGA is BAMA has been a National Powerhouse for far longer than UGA. Florida only got to the point they are at when The Ole Ball Coach was there.
ROLL TIDE ROLL. Just a little more bad news for UGA,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,BAMA got a committment from a 4 STAR yesterday at All American game in San Antonio by the name of CJ Mosley.

Take everything David Pollack says with a grain of salt. there is nothing SMART about him; other than his cunning demeanor. According to several teammates, Pollack’s Christian, virgin, good guy, leader, poster boy image, was all a ruse to create an uber pro sports endorsement that panned out once he broke his neck. Can anyone say Karma? The guy was a philandering, immature, bully who beat up on teammates, preyed on college girls, and “lead” his Georgia teammates like a Machiavellian frat boy.

Louie – thanks for the 8 out of 9 gifts. You guys better quit worrying about UGA and worry about being able to play in a bowl game. Otherwise, they will have to change one of the bowls to the zero bowls because that is what GT keeps putting up in bowl games – ZERO as in ZERO wins….You guys better worry about your conference games. Smart would be crazy to leave Bama. Here’s why. If smart goes to UGA he’ll be the “coach in waiting” to replace Richt whenever he finally retires, leaves or gets fired. If he stays at Bama, people will continue to notice his work and he’ll be a head coach in 1-2 years tops. Anybody who has Smart’s best interest at heart will realize that he will become a head coach much sooner if he stays at Bama. I don’t think anybody here has Smart’s best interest at heart though.

This from Sports Illustrated
Smarts next position will be head coach
Alabama coach Nick Saban was pretty non-committal Wednesday when I asked him his opinion of coach-in-waiting arrangements, but he said they can work very well under the correct circumstances. It’s not too much of a stretch to speculate that if Saban and Alabama athletic director Mal Moore ever did decide to name Saban’s successor, they might pick defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. Smart, who turned 34 last month and who won the 2009 Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant, has “future head coach” written all over him.

LOST 2001 to Florida. David Greene.
LOST 2001 to Auburn UNRANKED 7-5 team. David Greene.
LOST 2001 to Boston College # 22 otherwise aren’t ranked David Greene.
HERE are the teams who have been BETTER in the Coach Richt Era :
101-16 Texas and 1 BCS NC 2 appearances.
102-15 Boise State DJ Shockley scored 6 TDs against.
97-19 USC Pete Carroll and a BCS NC & 1 AP Poll 2nd NC.
94-21 Ohio State and 1 BCS NC 3 appearances. Tressel.
97-24 Oklahoma 1 BCS NC (0 since 2001) 4 appearances. Stoops.
91-27 LSU and 2 BCS NC 2 appearances Saban & Miles.
90-27 Florida and 2 BCS NC 2 appearances Urban Meyer.
Frankly, Miami of Florida Won a BCS NC too and now Alabama is better than Coach Richt as well with their BCS NC, and both of those are in the Coach Richt Era.
So, who did Coach Richt beat ?
Go ahead. I’ll wait.
Who did David Greene beat ?
Ok, now Coach Richt has been 90-27 too, but he has 0 BCS NC Game appearances, 0 BCS NC, 0 AP NC, 8 LOSSES to UNRANKED teams in Final AP Poll in 9 years, a 2-7 record against Florida, a 0-2 record against The Big East, a 52-23 record against The SEC and it is against The SEC that Coach Richt has played his worst football.
Coach Richt Era LOST 8 games against teams UNRANKED in Final AP Poll Top 25.
Another 5 LOSSES to teams who if they hadn’t beat Coach Richt, none of those 5 teams would have been ranked in the Final AP Poll too.
13 LOSSES to teams otherwise UNRANKED Final AP Poll Top 25.
sc dawg those are 13 LOSSES you have SELECTIVE MEMORY about.
Address yourself to those 13 games.
No you cannot do it.
Go ahead.
Do it.
SEC Conference Record, 2001-2009 Coach Richt Era :
56-19 Florida. 2 BCS NC in Coach Richt Era Urban Myer.
53-23 LSU. 2 BCS NC in Coach Richt Era Saban & Miles.
52-23 UGA. Really hasn’t accomplished a damn thing sc dawg.
47-26 Auburn even had a 13-0 season fired that coach.
46-29 vols. GA higher ranked 8 years in row and LOST half the games.
44-30 Alabama. BCS NC. Saban better coach.
Let’s Look Head-to-Head, if you can bring yourself to sc dawg :
2-7 Florida.
3-3 :LSU.
5-4 vols.
6-3 Auburn.
3-1 Alabama.
19-18 record against just these 5 SEC teams Coach Richt Era.
sc dawg, how in the LIVING HELL is UGA the BEST in the Coach Richt Era ?
Play that back past me again son ?
sc dawg.
Hello ?
You said that Georgia has been the BEST in the Coach Richt Era.
NOT FREAKING HARDLY.
ALL of these 5 SEC teams have National Championships in the Coach Richt Era except for Auburn who had a 13-0 season and the vols who won their NC before the Coach Richt Era.
2 LOSSES to Kentucky, 2 losses to South Carolina and 1 LOSS to Vandie.
Average Number 7 Ranking in Recruiting in both Scout.com and Rivals all 10 years.
State of Georgia finds ONLY California, Florida and Texas with more high school players who go on to the NFL than the Sovereign State of Georgia.
19-18 record against 5 SEC teams Coach Richt Era.
Now, I am a Bulldog fan sc dawg. You make me do the research you are too damn lazy to do to refute your B.S. premise that UGA has been the BEST in the Coach Richt Era.
We HAVE NOT.
NOT CLOSE.
Moreover, we have not accomplished much.
We are NOT 1 in the Elite of College Football.
You lose credibility when you LIE sc dawg.
I am NOT satisfied.
I like Coach Richt. I don’t want Coach Richt fired. But, he hasn’t accomplished much unless you want to compare him to Ray Goof, who I didn’t like as our QB but instead Matt Robinson.
I watched Fran Tarkenton between the hedges.
Charley Trippi is UGA Bulldogs’ greatest Athlete, who accomplished the MOST.
He was the # 1 Draft Pick in the 1st Round, and instantly was MVP of the NFL Championship Game now called the Super Bowl. He won NC before and after World War II, he stopped to fight in. And, he also was a Great Baseball Player and Coach of the Atlanta Crackers I went to watch every night. Every night.
My season tickets on the 2nd row after my UGA degree (I was a walk-on) leave images in my mind quite clearly of Herschel Walker running left, changing fields and out-running everyone to the right for TDs.
My bowl trips to Cotton Bowls fumble rooskie and Sugar Bowls Notre Dame West Virginia and trips to JAX 25 times including 4th and Dumb establish that what I am saying have validity.
19-18 against the Best Top 5 SEC teams in the Coach Richt Era is not that great sc dawg.
The win against GA tek just 2 games ago was totally awesome, and I think 1 of the greatest wins we have had. Our coaching staff hired exclusively by Coach Richt including keeping Rodney Garner while he played Oklahoma after being hired December 20 at 2 am in 2000, has frankly SUCKED.
If you want me to say that we have FAILED, ok we have failed.
I liked beating the vols in 2001 in a great win by David Greene. Frankly, he never matched that again after that Freshman year, not a win like that.
2 of the Sugar Bowls, we got to play 5-Loss FSU B.S. and Hawaii for God’s sake. Those were afterthought games, not Elite College Football.
The other Sugar Bowl was in Atlanta and it was 0-28 just a few minutes after we sat in our seats. B.S. You sc dawg weren’t there either.
You were not there as I (I have Matt Robinson’s game jersey from the game) for 21-0 in 1976 over Alabama.
We had 1 win all season long last year over a Top 25 team, Michigan State, who DID NOT DESERVE TO BE RANKED WHATSOEVER.
Final AP Poll RANKED TEAMS Coach Richt beat :
2009-2010 we beat only GA tek Number 13 and that is a great win for us.
2008-2009 we beat really no one # 24 Michigan St no business being ranked.
2007-2008 we beat # 19 Hawaii oh that’s great, # 13 Florida, # 15 Auburn.
2006-2007 we beat # 19 Virginia Tech and # 9 Auburn.
2005-2006 we beat only # 6 LSU.
2004-2005 we beat # 16 LSU and # 17 Wisconsin.
2003-2004 we beat # 15 Tennessee # 18 Purdue.
2002-2003 we beat 5-Loss # 21 FSU, # 14 Auburn & # 11 Alabama.
2001-2002 we beat # 24 Georgia Tech and # 4 Tennessee vols.
Taken by itself, 17 wins over Final AP Poll Top 25 teams.
3 Final AP Poll Top 10 teams we beat # 9 Auburn 2006, # 6 LSU 2005 and # 4 vols 2001.
Certainly, # 13 GA tek this season is a great win, # 13 Florida 2007 is a great win, # 15 Auburn 2007 is a great win, # 9 Auburn 2006 is a great win, # 6 LSU 2005 is a great win, # 15 vols in 2003 is a great win David Greene, # 14 Auburn and # 11 Alabama 2002 are both great wins David Greene, and the 2001 David Greene win over the vols # 4 is a great win the win that knocked the cap off UGA’s program trying to repair ourselves after the Ray Goof Era still all those years later.
INCONSISTENT B.S.
17 WINS I love every 1 of over Final AP Poll Top 25 teams.
27 LOSSES to Final AP Poll Top 25 teams or teams UNRANKED.
19-18 vs. The Top 5 SEC teams in the Coach Richt Era.
Ray Goof would not have won those 17 against Final AP Poll Top 25, none of them.
But, that doesn’t mean that I have to sit here knock-kneed that I cannot say to you sc dawg that excuse me, I don’t compare Coach Richt to Ray Goof.

27 LOSSES to Final AP Poll Top 25 teams or teams UNRANKED.
19-18 vs. The Top 5 SEC teams in the Coach Richt Era.

It is not however, a top five program year in year out. It has finished six times in the top ten in the last nine years. G Dawg, let’s hope not. USC is overrated and lose to the Stanford’s and Oregon State’s of the world. We definitely do NOT need a USC guy in Athens! If they weren’t in the Pac-1, they wouldn’t look so good.

I’m with you AMUSED DOG, this is entertaining. I wonder if there are UGA fans on other teams’ blogs doing this crap? If so, I need to hang my head twice now…once for my GT breathren on here and again for my UGA buddies showing out on other blogs.

GTDOG…………………………….I just enjoy ticking you GT and Hound Dog fans off. You guys are so funny. 2nd rate ACC program with 1-2 star players and 2nd rate SEC program that does not know what to do with 3-5 star players. Insecure, give a break, it is all good and just having some fun. I do not take it personal, why should you. I really enjoy having fun and everyone on here should take it that way.
Well, time to go praise the Lord and thank him for all the blessing that I have received.
HAVE A BLESSED DAY

Yes, it seems strange that a DC would leave a program that just won a national championship to do the exact same thing at a “lesser” program currently. But, we all know Saban is the one getting the credit for the defense, and who wouldn’t get pi$$ed at that every single day when it’s YOUR defense that is out there producing. I think the fact he would want all the D credit, more money and coming back to his alma mater and his wife’s home state is enough of a reason to believe it’s a done deal.

That was the best article I have ever read about UGA football. Seriously, well done.
Actually better written than some of the AJC hacks.

You sure do sound like a Yech fan. Trying to convince everyone that all UGA gets is “5 star athletes,” when the fact of the matter is Richt has only had 9 during his 9 years in Athens. Both yech and UGA are playing with majority 3 star guys. Keep spinning though bub, your ignorance is funny
