Just listened to audio of Nick Saban’s final press conference in Pasadena today before he and the national champions flew back to Alabama.
Thought you’d be interested in Saban’s comments pertaining to assistant coaches making lateral career moves.
You could certainly interpret the remarks as pointed advice to Kirby Smart that he shouldn’t leave the defensive-coordinator job at Alabama for the same job at Georgia.
Said Saban:
“I’m always happy and interested for our coaches to be able to advance professionally, especially if it is a professional advancement in terms of a guy being a coordinator who can go be a head coach in a situation where he has a chance to be successful. . . .
“I’m not pleased when guys make lateral moves because it’s a little bit human nature to think, like my dad used to say, the grass is always greener on top of the septic tank. You always think it’s better someplace else. You kind of let your ego get involved, and you make moves that you shouldn’t make and really aren’t in your best interests for a career standpoint. So I’m not happy when guys do that. But anybody on our staff who can move up, we would like to help them do that.”
There were reports Thursday, including one during the telecast of the national-title game, that Texas Tech planned to interview Smart for its vacant head-coaching job. But Texas Tech’s president and athletics director denied the reports Thursday and again Friday.
Click here for a blog from earlier today on how long it had been since Georgia was unranked in the final polls.

Saban is the best coach in college football. Only coach to win a National Championship at two different schools since 1936. The man is a winner and you have to admire that. He gives more money back to ‘Nick’s Kids’ charities than most people could make in their lifetimes. How many Coaches and Wall Street executives give back to poor kids and their families?

Liar-Liar-pants-on-fire Saban giving such advice is ludicrous. Also, I heard the commentators use Smart’s name ONCE during the broadcast. Otherwise, it was “Saban’s defense”. THAT is a good reason to make a GOOD lateral move.

Whenever Saban speaks, consider the source. The man has absolutely no integrity. This has been proven by the way he has conducted himself in the past. Smart should definately not listen to this guy for any advise because he has absolutely no credibility. By the way, I do not even want Smart as our DC. My choice would be David Pollack, hands down!

Yeah, Kevin Stelle left Saban to make a laterla move as Saban’s DC in 2007.
Applewhite, Saban’s OC, left Saban for a BELOW lateral move, to become Texas’ rb coach.
Now Smart heading to Georgia. Of course Saban wants Smart at Texas Tech instead of Georgia, so he doesn’t have to play him in his last year before he burns through another team (5 year maximum for Saban hits in 2010–never coached anywhere more than 5 years)
How about becoming a nicer guy Nick, how’s those social skills workin’ out for ya big guy?

Only two Defensive Coordinators makes more than Kirby Smart and that is Monte Kiffin and John Chavis and Chavis just punked Georgia into making LSU give him a big raise. Kirby said he was “looking forward to next year at Alabama”, and the 400K he made this past season. Sabam will ask for and get all his assistants large pay increases and contract adjustments.

I keep hearing that it is Smart. 3 year deal $750,000 per year.
I think it would be smart of Smart to come to UGA. He turns our defense back into a top ten defense and the head jobs will start coming alot quicker than if he stays under Saban at Bama. After a national title all he can do is go down.

I wouldn’t call increasing pay from $300,000 to $1,000,000 a year, a LATERAL move.
But, does Nick take his own advice? Has he moved from one job as Head Coach to become AD at the next place? Not so much. Nick’s been a lateral mover his whole career, every 1-5 years, JUST LIKE URBAN MEYER.

Major Applewhite was not working out at Alabama and his leaving was mutual. He went back home to his alma mater and took the job he knew he could always get, a glorified GA. Saban hired him late in the process in winter of 2007, when most coaches were already hired and he was available. Kevin Steele want’s a head coaching job and has family ties to South Carolina area.

Very interesting how Georgia doesn’t cultivate coaching talent even among coaches with Georgia ties. Take Muschamp and Smart who Georgia wanted no part of until they became ultra successful at other schools, then they claim them as theirs. Georgia even had Smart on their staff (coaching running backs of all things) and let him go to the Dolphins instead of recognizing the talent and promoting him over Martinez. You never hear of any Georgia assistant coaches on other school’s wish lists…just sayin’.

As a Tech fan, I have a question: many have said that Kirby Smart will never get a head job if he stays as Saban’s DC (which may or may not be true) because Saban is the brain behind the whole thing. But if that’s the case, why would UGA want to be the team that takes the risk on him and also why would they want him for may be a season or two? Be interesting to understand the reasoning (beyond the obvious that he is DC for one of the best defenses in CFB).

Sometimes you make a lateral move if you foresee an opportunity that appeals to you and/or your family. Maybe Kirby would just like to work with, and for, a better person. Maybe he sees that ‘Brother’ Saban is just as likely to move on himself to a job that others might see as something other than a promotion, just because he wants to, or because he and his family aren’t particularly happy in Tuscaloosa, or because his ego tells him to.
If you want the job Kirby, it’s yours, but don’t let this pr**k browbeat you into not taking it. I mean, if you stay with him, just how do you think he’ll treat you for even ‘thinking about’ leaving? Get the hell out of that situation – so long as they keep wearin’ ‘hounds-tooth’ hats and stuff, they’ll never fully embrace ‘Brother’, or you.

This is prefect. Saban is a CONTROL FREAK, and this statement of his goes hand in hand with it. “You assistants should do as I want you too or you’re a fool”. Typcial Saban. No wonder anyone would rather want to work for Richt rather than put up with that mess. Saban gave thanks to fans, university, etc last night but didn’t even mention his assistant coaches. Has anyone ever heard of another school coming after one of Mark Richt’s young coaches that he cultivated and nurtered and taught how to be a head coach by example. No, that’s because Mark Richt offers nothing in the way of innovation or stellar coaching intelligence. Kirby Smart taking a lateral movement to of all places Georgia would quite possibly be the dumbest decision a young coach has made in the history of college football. Saban is sending Kirby a message and I”m sure he’ll tell him to his face. He should stay with Saban another couple of years and he can go back to Athens to be the head coach, not the DC because Mark Richt will surely be fired within three years or he’ll just quit because he knows in his mind he can’t coach against these guys in the SEC. Admit it, you know it, I know it, and everyone that knows anything about college football knows it, Mark Richt is at least the 5th best coach in the SEC. There’s four now that have won National Championships.

Based on Saban’s history, one can see how he hasn’t quite understood the concept of doing what is best for you, and doing what is best for your family. Decisions we make in the stages of life, right and wrong co-existing together, therefore just because Kirby makes a lateral move, doesn’t mean that he is losing one thing to another. It could be the gradification or pleasure of coaching your alma mater or family reasons. Money to some is of little importance, but the lives of their love ones and personal impowerment could be factors. In other words, do our decisions make our destiny or does our destiny control what decisions we make? How do we know what is really the “best choice” at the time of making it? Whatever choice we pick, couldn’t we potentially always have picked a better one?
While Saban has pulled his family around America like gypsies from Michigan State, LSU, Miami,to Alabama to find his destiny, K. Smart is still weighing his choices objectively to pick the best one for him and his family.

Mark Richt has a top 10 winning program in NCAA since arriving at UGA which now spans 8 years, certainly nothing to scoff at.

News flash….Winners are @ssholes to the weak at heart!! (EX:Saban, Belichik, Shanahan, etc.). Saban takes now prisoners and every asst. coach knows what is required before they work for him. He brings them in, busts their balls, wins alot, and they move on as better coaches. Kirby runs the defense with Saban’s finger print all over it. If Smart comes to GEORGIA as DC it would be a step up because he is BAMA’s DC in title only. In Athens, Kirby could RUN the defense just like Muschamp does at TEXAS. Saban wants him to stay so he won’t have rebuild his National Championship coaching Staff, but he knows that’s life in big time college football.

Tell Colt McCoy not to feel bad about getting knocked out early. There ’s a line of QB’s who didn’t “won’t anymore” from the Tide defense and took themselves out of the game. Arkansas QB Mallet, Ole Miss QB Snead, LSU QB all had to leave the game early and Tebow wept on the side lines.
Kirby won’t leave unless it’s a springboard for a HC position. Georgia is in no hurry to push Richt out the door and you can bet Kirby Smart ain’t leaving this great job for the same in Athens. Richt has already laid out the time table if your paying attention. It leads to UGA signing a NFL assistant. Tick tock- a month and 10 days and counting. How many times will Georgia be left at the alter with an empty sack?

Funny to see some of these dawg fans taking digs at Saban after he and the bammers roll to a national championship. Saban should be giving career advice since every single move he made was a logical career promotion to a higher level. Kent state to Mich state to Lsu to Miami dolphins. The only downward move was back to college because he realized he didn’t like coaching pro players. Nothing wrong with that. Spurrier did the same as did Pete Carroll, Lou Holtz, and others just to name a few. The man knows a lot more about intelligent career moves then the bozo bulldog fans trying to take potshots at him for advising Smart to stay at Bama or take a promotion to a head job. And why in the hell would anyone ever ponder leaving an elite championship program like Bama to go to a notorious middle of the pack loser program like georgia. Is Smart really worth $750,000 and a 3 year contract, or whatever the supposed price is? Or is he just a pretty good DC who happens to be coaching at the right place at the right time? I think CMR is a good head coach and his job is safe for a while, but if UGA throws that kind of contract at Smart and it doesn’t pay off big time CMR will have plenty of company at the unemployment line (Adams & Evans). Saban’s a great coach and a egomaniac, so what he says shouldn’t matter. Kirby is good young coach and I would like to have him at UGA, but Richt would be wasting his time. Kirby is a flight risk! Richt is probably the most stable coach in the SEC. I’m sure it killed him to fire CWM. Richt wants to maintain stability. FLA is in turmoil, TENN is about to be on probation, Miles is on his last leg at LSU, Saban is about to lose his 2/3 of his defense to the NFL, Richt needs to bring in a DC that will coach his a$$ off and stay awhile. Some of you people amaze me! I read some of the most idiotic things on these blogs UGA is a sinking ship really? UGliA has CONSISTENTLY been one of the best programs in the country over the last ten years although they haven’t won a national championship like other schools in the conference they are always in the conversation for winning the SEC and lets not kid ourselves people the SEC comes down to the same six teams every year in the east 1. Florida 2.UGA 3. Tenn in the west its always 1. LSU 2. Bama 3. Auburn and the games these teams play against each other often is a big factor on who comes out of each division. For the past few years (except this yr) the loss to florida has cost UGA a shot at the sec championship and a direct path to the bcs title game. I am a Georgia fan no doubt but I can be objective which some of you obviously can not. Success runs in cycles only five yrs ago florida was down three years ago bama was down and this year uga was down. Enjoy your schools success while it last because dark days will come again UGA is in the dark right now but the sun looks like it will be shining on our program soon and don’t be surprised if UGA is in the bcs title game within the next four years.

UGA……………………..It irks you guys to see the last National Championship was in 1980 for the DAWGS.
Alabama last 2 were 1992 and 2009. Thirty years is a long time. The ghost of Vince Dooley. Must be sad to see CMR ponder why no one of any magnitude wants the DC job.
Smart can leave and the line for his job will be very long ……………………..not like the sad situation you have.
You guys are so funny. 2nd rate program who will never catch BAMA in any statistic for NC nor SEC Championships.

Gentlemen,
Let me shed a little light on why I would consider coaching Georgia’s Defense.
1) I will never get the credit for turning Alabama’s defense around; that credit will always go to Coach Saban.
2) Alabama was a sinking ship when Coach Saban and I came to Alabama and we were able to turn the program around, so I am not concerned about the current state of Georgia’s program.
3) My wife and I love Athens and would love to come back and make a difference in the community as well as the University of Georgia’s football program.
4) I need to find out if I can truly run the defense on my own without contributions or advise from Coach Saban. This would be a good challenge and opportunity for me.

After reading the comments posted on here, I cannot remember why I pulled so much for Alabama. Actually, almost all the UGA fans I spoke with before and after the game pulled for Alabama. Now that the game is over and we see the real class of Bama, it makes one wonder.
The game was OVER with 47 seconds left, but classless Saban had to run up the score instead of showing class and taking a knee inside the 5 yd line. The spontaneous comments listed above to his assistants are unbelievable and sound as much a threat as advice.
Coming home to your alma mater with a raise is NOT a lateral move. Saban has to be a helluva coach; no doubt about it. He deserves all the credit for pulling this program out of the outhouse to the top in such a short time. (Bama fans act like they have been on top for the last 50 years). He is an egomaniac and must be hell to work for. What other coach runs ahead of his team onto the field? What other coach prohibits his assistants from talking to the media? It may be good training, but at what a price. Wonder what the stresses on the family life are in Ala compared to UGA?
We cannot know the true inside situation. Kirby has been in Athens and in Tuscaloosa and I am sure he will make the decision he feels is best for his family and his career. Hope there are not other personalities in Athens that would present an obstacle. Would welcome any move to improve the team, but not just to satisfy someone’s ego. If he doesn’t want the job and I hope it is an aggressive offer, I am confident CMR will find the right guy.
Go Dawgs!

I’m the fool, obviously. I moved to the South 10 years ago, and this whole time i thought the state of Alabama WAS the ’septic tank’ of the United States. Glad Saban pointed out my short-sightedness for me. Go Dawgs…

01HAWK, You made me very sad and hurt my feelings. I know I’m not as strong and powerful as you since I don’t have a man crush on Nick Saban, but when you say no one wants to come to my great football school it just makes me want to cry.
The only thing that makes me feel better is that Urban Meyer isn’t at Florida any more, so maybe we CAN play for the SEC Championship soon.
Oh, wait…he was just kidding?
Or is he really gone?
Or half way out the door?
Or half way in the door?
Or never really left?
It’s just so confusing to me how things work with the gods of college football. I guess simply needing a new DC isn’t so bad after all.

A fellow UGA fan (nopefully not a fellow alumnus) mixed quite a metaphore in asking, how many times will Georgia be left at the alter with an empty sack. Just what does an empty sack have to do with an alter. But, following her lead, I’d like to say if it is even assumed Richt goes anywhere near a church (let alone an alter), some reporter with nothing to write, fan with nothing to do, or assistant coach wanting a raise is sticking a sck in his hands and pointing to it to suite their own purpose, whatever it may be. Everybody take a deep breath and throw that damned sack down, but do NOT stomp it, for it isn’t empty and you wouldn’t want to get its contents on your shoe.

If Kirby does come back to Athens, he’ll be here a long time after ‘Brother’ Saban has split for parts yet to be determined. He left Miami because, like Petrino, he found that his coaching style just wouldn’t work with adults. So long as he can intimidate kids that are afraid of losing their scholarships, or coaches that are afraid of losing their jobs, he does just fine. Then there’s that ego. Tide fans, the worst thing that could have happened to you and your new ‘hero’ is for you to have won the NC. The man has now added that notch to his personal list and will be easily lured to the ‘next big thing’…USC?…maybe…back to the Big Ten…doubtful…but gone from Tuscaloosa in two years…I’ll bet on it and you guys will be back making excuses like you were under poor Mike ‘I don’t have a clue’ Shula, or having to fire coaches before they ever even coach a game…and you’ll deserve it because the one thing that Bear didn’t leave you was ‘class’ or ’style’ – and no, hounds-tooth ain’t the kind of style I’m talking about.

Tim Tucker, what do you mean was Nick Saban sending Kirby Smart a message ?
God.
Who the hell else ?
Texas Tech is NOT better as head coach than DC at Alabama.
NOT.
UGA Bulldogs is NOT better as DC than DC at Alabama.
Sorry.
Tell it like it is.
Nick Saban for all his faults, absolutely tells it like it is.
Always has.
Good lesson to learn yourself Tim Tucker.
Mark Bradley, I will give you credit for that admission. Big XII is 2-5 in BCS NC Games and SEC 6-0.
Big XII hype.
SEC is 3-0 over Big XII in BCS NC Games including last year AND this year.
3-0 also all bowls SEC over Big XII this year.
3-0 also all bowls SEC over Big XII last year.
Stick to basketball, you know nothing about football. Nothing.

2 SEC NC in a row is REPEAT.
3 SEC NC in a row is HAT TRICK.
4 SEC NC in a row now is The Golden Sombrero.
Mark Bradley, you would know sir.
What is it called when The Mighty SEC wins the NC again next season for our 5th in a row, sir ?
3 Polls 3 Final Polls have UGA Bulldogs ranked in the Top 25 at 22, 22, and 24.

2-5 PAC-10 Bowl Record
6-4 SEC Bowl Record including UGA Bowl Win number 26 three have more.
Big XII ? Not even a Winning Bowl Record.
ACC and Big XII had a LOSING BOWL RECORD coming into this season.
ACC and Big XII BOTH still have LOSING BOWL RECORD.
ACC added to it.
Coach Richt and Rodney Garner have PULLED the scholarship OFFER to B.J. Butler a 3-Star undersized 240 lbs. Defensive End who has 4.65 speed in the 40-yard dash. He has committed to Charlie Strong at Louisville.
This opens up a Scholarship Offer.
Give it to Mack Brown.
Starting 1997, Mike Bobo’s brilliant Senior Season, UGA had been ranked every year for 13 Consecutive Years in the Final AP Poll. We had not been ranked every year in the Final Coaches’ Poll. There were other polls we had not made the Top 25 of. Frankly, we have had several seriously flawed, underachieving, and greatly disappointing seasons since the day DJ Shockley graduated with Honors from UGA following the 2005 Season and SEC Championship.
We have messed up in Recruiting.
We have had serious holes, demanding 4 and 5-Star Commitments, and have failed miserably at filling those glaring obvious holes. We have done this while we have instead stockpiled our 85 Scholarships at positions where instead we were already 5 Deep.
GLARING HOLES :
Defensive Ends, for example. Signing 5 in 3 weeks now will only make this WORSE.
Safety, for example.
Cornerbacks, for example signing only 1 a year for 5 consecutive years now.
Defensive Tackles now having only gotten 1 year 5 years in a row now.
Fullbacks after this up-coming season.
Also, it appeared obvious that we would have to move stockpiled receivers to defensive backs and failed miserably on that as well.
And, we should have long ago not waited until recently, moved stockpiled linebackers to Defensive Ends.
Of course, Coach Richt has had a real problem in his decisions of coaches’ on his staff, surrounding himself with YES MEN, buddies, college roommates, and out-of-position position coaches with zero experience at the position Coach Richt put them in, and not one coach on his staff with 1 single solitary day of NFL Coaching Experience.
He still doesn’t have 1 single coach with NFL Coaching Experience.
Not 1.
We did not play Knowshon Moreno, instead redshirting him, and therefore only got to see the best running back in UGA history over the last 25 seasons, 2 years. Very sad decisions, all of these.
We did redshirt Washaun Ealey, and then three-quarters through Game 5, ripped the Redshirt OFF Washaun Ealey. Another blunder in personnel for a brain trust that frankly has had way too many of these.
But, we have played a very tough schedule, and as I predicted all along, we have ended up outside the Final AP Poll Top 25, and outside the Final USA Today Coaches’ Poll.
There is nothing that you can do about that.
Playing Texas A&M who ends with a losing record 6-7 on December 28 in the Bowl Number 11 of 35 bowls, is not going to get you ranked no matter the 44-20 obliteration. And frankly the losses to not 1 but 2 unranked 7-6 teams who otherwise would not have had a winning record for 2009-2010, Tennessee vols and Kentucky Wildcats, sealed our fate, despite the win over Number 13 GA tek.
This gave us SEVEN (7) LOSSES to teams NOT RANKED in the Final AP Poll Top 25 in the Coach Richt Era.
We have to cut that crap out.
BAD LOSSES. 7.
Frankly, you can add the LOSS to GA tek 2008 to that list of BAD LOSSES too, although they barely did end up in the Final AP Poll Top 25 in 2008. But, they would NOT have, had they not beat UGA in 2008.
But, it is quite clear that Coach Richt has 7 Losses to teams NOT RANKED in the Final AP Poll Top 25.
Kentucky and Tennessee vols both at 7-6 at no point this season were going to end up in the Final AP Poll Top 25. How do you lose to such teams who otherwise would not have even had a winning record. A study of both teams shows that NEITHER KY nor the vols BEAT ANYONE.
And, they beat Coach Richt.
HOW DO YOU LOSE TO A TEAM LIKE THAT ?
BAD COACHING STAFF.
Also :
7 LOSSES to teams NOT RANKED in Final AP Poll Top 25 Coach Richt Era.
18-20 against teams Ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 25 Coach Richt Era.
I don’t have to tell you these are NOT the results of an Elite Program with Top Broyles Award Type Coaching Staff in the Coach Richt Era.
9 years, you don’t have 7 Losses to UNRANKED Final AP Poll Top 25 teams.
9 years, you don’t have LOSING RECORD 18-20 vs Final AP Poll Top 25 teams.
Coach Richt Era.
You don’t have EITHER of these absolute facts, and be Elite.
Your Coaching STAFF in total is to blame.
Coach Richt has done a SORRY JOB of hiring a Coaching Staff for him to be CEO over.
None of his entire coaching staff have ever coached in the NFL 1 day.
We pay him enough money that he should either take back over making play call decisions, which is his only claim to fame and why we hired him, or he has to hire an ENTIRE COACHING STAFF made up of current NFL Coaches.
Do I mind if he hires a Defensive Backs’ Position Coach from the NFL and makes him the Defensive Coordinator ? Oh, I think that is exactly what he must do.
He whiffed on Chavis last season, when I told him he had to go get Chief.
He didn’t listen.
A lot of that is the blame of the other UGA Bulldog posters, who had all these wild nasty statements they wanted to make about Willie Martinez ALL LAST SEASON, when they could have instead, gone past that on to the SOLUTION.
And, you were not unified what you wanted.
Congratulations though.
By doing what you have been doing for several years now, harping on just only Willie Martinez, you got him FIRED.
Coach Richt’s college roommate Willie Martinez FIRED.
It was a tough choice for an SEC Head Football Coach, who has said for years, that he would NOT be making ANY changes on his staff.
I told him he could either make wholesale changes to his coaching staff, or he could leave with the lot of them.
I pointed out our issues on Offense.
I pointed out our issues on Recruiting.
I pointed out our issues on Special Teams.
I pointed out our issues at DE and Safety and Cornerbacks.
I pointed out our issues with well over 120 suspensions by Coach Richt in his 9 years.
You ?
Willie Martinez sucks. Fire Willie Martinez.
Congratulations.
You got what you wanted.
Moreover, the real issue remains that Coach Richt has surrounded himself with YES MEN, and has 0 with 1 day NFL Coaching Experience.
Excuse me, Coach Richt SUCKS at HIRING A COACHING STAFF.
He has sucked at it for 9 years and counting.
He SUCKS AT HIRING COACHES TODAY JANUARY 9, 2010.
3 WEEKS AND 1 DAY before NATIONAL SIGNING DAY.
No Defensive Coordinator.
No Defensive Backs Coach.
No Defensive Ends Coach.
No Linebackers Coach.
No Special Teams Kick-Off Coach.
No Special Teams Kick-Off Return Coach.
No Special Teams Punt Return Coach.
Have you read the quotes of our Commitments ? Have you ?
Florida HIRED A GREAT DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR, YESTERDAY.
Coach Richt WHIFFED ON THAT ONE TOO, and Coach Richt SHOULD HAVE HIRED HIM BEFORE Florida even knew they needed 1. Coach Richt fired his Defensive Coordinator A FREAKING MONTH before Charlie Strong LEFT as Florida’s Defensive Coordinator.
We ain’t beating no Florida, us with our staff and them with their staff, by DIRECT CONTRAST. We can’t get THOSE RECRUITS. They want THOSE COACHES, not Coach Richt’s assemblage of nobodies all out of position to teach them what they need to enhance their career. And, they are NOT SURROUNDED by the players Florida has, not here. We have no one in our entire Secondary like we always used to have my whole lifetime.
Stacy Searels better get off his butt and do something with all these Offensive Linemen we already had here when we hired him. He has NOT lived up to his billing. Has he ?
When you open the UGA Media Guide, the 1st thing you see if the COACHING STAFF.
Then, the players.
WE DON’T HAVE A COACHING STAFF AND HAVE NOT HAD ONE, AND COACH RICHT DOESN’T GIVE A CRAP.
3 WEEKS AND DAY BEFORE SIGNING DAY, and NO DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR ?
God Almighty Above.
We have a former UGA wide receiver whose dad was a great tailback for us as Running Back Coach.
We have a former running back at UTC Chattanooga who then became running backs’ coach at several places including South Carolina, who is our Wide Receivers’ Coach.
We have an Offensive Coordinator who has never worked anywhere but at UGA (except 1 year as QB coach at Jacksonville State) who has never held the position of Offensive Coordinator anywhere in his lifetime. His play calls are BOOED LOUDLY by Sanford Stadium fans all the time.
All the time.
He gets in 3rd and long and runs the ball.
We have a Tight Ends Coach who can’t figure out that Orson Charles is our Best Tight End. This Tight Ends Coach is in fact a former Quarterback. God Almighty is all I can say. What the hell does a freaking QB know about Tight Ends ?
OR ANY OF THESE OTHER ALL OUT OF POSITION COACHES ?
Not 1 of them has 1 day experience coaching in the NFL.
That’s it for Coach Richt’s Coaching Staff.
There isn’t anyone else.
THAT STAFF has taken the Number 7 Recruiting Class we, the fans of UGA Bulldogs, have handed them.
AVERAGE NUMBER 7 RANKINGS BOTH RIVALS AND SCOUT.COM EVERY YEAR FOR 10 YEARS IN A ROW NOW OF THE COACH RICHT ERA :
And gone :
18-20 vs the Final AP Poll Top 25 for 9 years now.
7 Losses to NOT RANKED teams in the Final AP Poll Top 25 for 9 years now.
Don’t give me this B.S. this CRAP that all we need is a Defensive Freaking Coordinator.

Gator in the Hootch,
Nice comments about the recruiting class that UF is bringing in. Congrats. One thing, LSU had the #1 class this past season. They lost to Penn State.
I also wonder, if UF is going to have the “projected # 1″ class, then why did Meyer almost bail on Florida? I think he knew LWT (life without Tebow), was going to be be tougher now that he has to actually start coaching again and break in another QB. We all know Brantley isn’t going to cut it.
And before every UF fan this side of the Mason Dixon jumps my comment, I hope Meyer a speedy recovery. We need coaches like him, keeps the SEC competitive at least the East anyway..

UGA can pay smart a lot more cash than Bama will pay–Kirby should make the move, get rich, with tons of benefits!!! At Georgia, he’ll make at least $1 mil per year with tons of perqs, incentives, etc. At bama, he’ll make only $300-$400K–chicken feed for the best D coordinator in the U.S.!! Come home to Athens—the money’s waiting!!!!

01Hawk,
Funny what a NC can do to a fan, isn’t it? A task that in no way, shape, form, or fashion did you contribute to. Let’s not forget before Saban got to Alabama, you guys were crying that same sad song UGA is now. Even when Saban got there, fans still wasn’t sure he was the guy. Then he lost to Boise State last year, you guys were ready for him to get fire.
All of a sudden he, (without the help of his assistants, if you let him tell it) wins the NC for Alabama, and it gives a free past to talk crap about anyone else? Well Congrats. Class has alluded another NC team in the SEC, or at least ifs fans. Instead of enjoying it with your parades or whatever, you felt the need to post here. Again, congrats.
But remember this, he has a NC at 2 schools. The USC job is about to be open if it isn’t already. Saban, unofficially just put his name at the top of that list of coaches. Good luck next season.

At Bama, if Kirby stays with Saban for maybe one or two more years, they win another NC and Saban bolts for who knows where. Thing is that maybe KS would NOT get the H job there. This is called strategic planning kids. Long term, not one short term, big pay day then gone, kind of thinking. It is called career planning. The right decision could ensure that Kirby is in one job for a long, long time. This is key to it all.
At UGA ……………..Kirby gets a great pay raise as the DC and a three or four year contract …….CMR tells him with Evans blessing that “you are the head pastor, Um, I mean Head Coach in waiting”. Richt wants BADLY to win another SEC title and all that comes with that and then, he walks away toward his Christian missionary work and leaves KS as the head man at UGA.
THIS is a deal that any young firebrand coach would take at his alma mater. This is why KS will be the UGA DC.The fanbase wants this to happen and after all, it IS ENTERTAINMENT and you keep your audience happy. Besides, Kirby’s wife played basketball for UGA and she loves Athens and his family is in the north Ga mtns, etc. It is called lifestyle gang. Lifestyle is the new nirvana for young folks.

What you GOOBER UGA fans fail to realize is that BAMA football will go on very well without Nick Saban because they will be lined up trying to get the job…………………………..Not like before when the team was down. BAMA is one of the TOP 5 coaching jobs in college football.
We will go after the coaches at TCU, Boise State, maybe Riley (Ex Bama player) now at Oregon State, Maybe the ole ball coach at South Carolina. The team is stocked with talent and has a TOP 3 recruiting class on the way. Sims is a good player and I wish him well, but our offense is built around the running game and he will not be able to showcase his talent at BAMA. Would love to have him on defense, but we have 4 talented QB’s.
Who has the top running back tandem in the country ? You guessed it…………………….BAMA with Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson. SEE………………………..The talent is there and the coaches will be lined up to get the job.

If Kirby Smart comes to UGA and the DAWGs improve and become competitive again it will build his resume as much as staying at Alabama will maybe more. Saben is always going to get most of the credit for Alabama’s success. When Bear Bryant was asked why he left a Texas A&M program he had built up to go to a struggling Alabama program in 1958 he said “mama called”. Mama is calling Kirby Smart.

Roll Tide, what is Richt’s record against Alabama? Just curious . . .
You guys had a great year, congrats are in full order. It would even appear that ya’ll are on the front end of a very strong run. However, you might want to check the record books, I believe UF was the most successful program over the last decade, followed by LSU and UGA. I believe you guys have been closer to the cellar recently than we’re gonna be any time soon. I’ve seen many posts from DAwg fans, including mine, congradulating Bama. I’ve lived in Birmingham, recently, when Bama was really struggling . . . you have as many classless fans an any program, perhaps more. Do enjoy your title, its great for Bama and the fans. But, both you, and the class-less UGA fans (of which there are many), should honeslty try to conduct yourselves with a bit more sportsmanship. Bear Bryant didn’t like losing. He hated it. But whether he won or lost he did so with class!!!!!!!

If guys like you are going to claim we’ve accomplished nothing, and finish in the cellar every year, then we’re going to correct you. Some, I’ll admit, do it in a less than classy way. I’m just saying that the facts are the facts. BAMA had a great year. BAMA is a great program. It is not however the end all be all of college football. Alabama should thank God for Colt MCCoy’s injury. With him, Texas would have routed Alabama. Even with a true freshman QB back-up, Texas had the ball with 2:00+ minutes left and only trailing by 3. An inexperienced freshman back-up gave Alabama the title. That kid will be one of the best ever at UT before he graduates.

You always here that Saban’s defense is the best, Saban this and Saban that on defense. Smart is not getting any credit so that would be enough for any employee to want to go somewhere else even if it was a lateral move. Smart still needs to prove himself before he makes that jump to HC and UGA would be the place for him to do that. Even if we couldn’t keep him but 2 – 3 years it would be worth it.

reading some of the comments from GT and Bama fans make me laugh! 1st of all, if KS wants to make the move to UGA then we’d love to have him! if he decides to stay then there will be another qualified person standing right behind him who will come in and coach up our talent just fine…Coach Richt will bring in a staff that will get our D back where it needs to be. not too worried about it at all…the anticipation’s killing me, but i’m not worried about it.
Bama fans…congrats on the NC! it was a big win for the SEC, and UGA will enjoy the $ that comes from it! just as you did when UGA played in 3 BCS games over the past 10 years….I was thinking about the SEC Title games UGA played in…we played LSU, Ark, and LSU. where were you in those games Bama? if your the poster boy for the SEC? and arn’t we 3-1 vs Bama over that time, and didn’t we beat you twice on your own turf? and wasn’t one of them the first home game in your newly renovated stadium? yeah, that’s what i thought! everything’s a cycle in sports….and i’m glad that your on top for a bit. enjoy it…don’t gloat, it’ll taint the experience for you!
GT fans…i know your bitter! bitter you can’t beat us, bitter UGA has better school colors, a better campus, more and prettier girls, and just is better over all…i hope things get better for you in the near future! i really do, but the fact remains…GT will NEVER be a better option than UGA. the sooner you come to grips with that the less envy will be in your heart.
Lets Go Dawgs! lock down your new DC, solidify one of the top incoming 2010 freshman classes and let’s get to work! 2010’s going to be a great year! 2010’s going to be the year of the Dawg! How Bout Them Dawgs!

Be careful of what you wish for. Saben is the brains behind the Tide defense. Now that doesn’t mean our boy Kirby Smart isn’t ready to run a top notch defense, he might be, but being the Tide DC just means that he has seen it done right, it doesn’t guarantee he can do it all by himself. I think maybe we should look at some guys that have been calling the shots for a while but aren’t at a school where they can draw the talent Georgia can. Or maybe someone like the guy out in Dallas who has lead a defense before and would do a good job with Georia’s talent.

Even with McCoy, TX could only score 13 against Nebraska.

Hey Bulldawg, if you had ever been around team sports, much less actually played some, you’d know that to be a good position coach you don’t have to have played that position. Some body types are better suited to play different positions. That doesn’t mean that your brain can only absorb information while you actually perform that activity! If you checked the backgrounds of most successful coaches you’d find that most have played and coached a number of different positions.

Georgia fans, I hate to say it, because I bleed red and black, but we will never win a national championship with Richt here. I’ve said that since the day they hired him. He doesn’t have the fire that the Dawgs need. Yes, he has two SEC championships and has played in three BCS games, but let’s be honest: shouldn’t he have done more with the talent he has recruited? The two SEC titles came in down years for other schools. You know it’s true. Look at the seasons. Now that the Alabamas, Floridas, Auburns, LSUs and even Tennessees of the conference are either back or headed on the way up, how quickly are we going to get back to the top? I love Georgia and always will, but until we quit dreaming about the glory days and start creating new ones, we are going to be referred to as a “septic tank.” Yes, the comment makes me angry, too, but what are we going to DO about it? Continue on the same path we’re on or get better and make Saban and the Tide eat those words?

What do you think? Lot of good stuff here. Some smart comments – some questionable. But “coach in waiting”??? Who are you guys kidding? Richt may not be the best coach in the land, but might become that. Dooley was not the best in America but became one of the best and won a national championship. Richt has that capability and knows from his his experience at FSU what the main goal is. He has come close too! No doubt we would have beat LSU in the SEC championship and would have destroyed Ohio St for the national championship had TN lost one game in ‘07.
Richt is too young and too smart to name ANYBODY “coach in waiting”. He has a lot of years left at GA and a lot of championships to win too. It will happen. He has been a head-coach for only 9 years and has clearly caused the Dawg Nation to NEVER be satisfied with mediocrity. He won’t rest until GA gets it right. He has too much integrity and determination to compromise. Someone said that he is “loyal” to a fault. Not so. He fired people rather than making lateral moves with them and keep them in the program. Maybe his delay was due to loyalty, but I would rather have a loyal HC than a use-’em and throw-’em-away kind of a guy.
His only mistake is in trying to take a potential coach and make him better rather than hiring proven talent. I think he sees this now and is going for proven talent that will also be loyal to GA.
I would think that a coach with integrity would prefer coaching at GA than some other SEC schools. Whoever said that Smart would have to go somewhere else to make a name for himself is certainly right. There ain’t no room for any other names at Alabama!

That’s why Kirby Smart is coming to Georgia. Bama has 2 guys both great at defense, Smart & Saban, it’s a WEAKER management team compared to having a balance with a brilliant OC. Georgia has a guy brilliant at offense (Richt got FSU to 5 Natl Champ’s at FSU as OC, TOP 5 IN nation in offense 5 times), and Smart is brilliant at defense.

ugaman, I never said I KNEW he wouldn’t be a good coach. I said that I had been saying since UGA hired him that the Dawgs would not win a NC. Did I know that he wouldn’t? Do I know that he won’t? Of course not. It is my opinion that as long as Georgia employs Mark Richt as head coach, it will not win a NC. I understand what he did at Florida State. I also understand that while at FSU, Richt coached a team that was an independent and then played in a watered-down ACC. Winning titles and bowls and running up scores against an independent schedule and the ACC of the time and doing so week in and week out against an SEC schedule are two very different things, especially when you MUST play Florida, Tennessee, Auburn and even Steve Spurrier-coached South Carolina every year. And I do not attack him as a man. He is a good Christian man of excellent character. I just don’t think that Georgia will consistently, year-in and year-out challenge for the SEC title and will not win a national championship with Richt at the helm.

Micheal M, love your love for the dawgs!!!!!!!! I’ve seen the logic you use on the boards before . . . “we won when other teams had bad years” . . . well, we could easily reverse that, they won we we had bad years, and, it would apply with the obvious exception of FLA, who, until this years’ sec title game, owned everyone! I think Richt is a proven commodity. Both UF and LSU won titles with losses, national titles. The dawgs simply didn’t get that break. Bama, THIS YEAR, ran the table and needed no breaks, but, let’s not lose sight of the fact that their record since Richt arrived is only better because of THIS YEAR. I have tremendous respect for Alabama, and for Saban, and for UF, and Myer, but the idea that Richt won’t manage the hurdles they present is flawed at best. We’re gonna be fine, no, we won’t win the SEC east every year, and if we win one national title under Richt I’ll be thrilled, but I can’t imagine who we could get that would be better. I wouldn’t want Myer, as good as he is. AS for Saban, not sure he’ll stay anywhere . . . just ask an LSU or Miami fan. He is a winner, but, is also Saban centered and doesn’t seem to grasp the idea that life is more than football–for his players or his assistants. Why do so many leave him for that greener grass over the proverbial septic tank. There are rumors everywhere that Saban might be headed to USC, I don’t know if they are true, but, I wouldn’t be surprised. And, if I remember correctly, Richt has had some success against Saban. Just my thoughts . . . gooooo dawgs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You pose a good question about why UGA fans are investing so much capital on hiring Kirby Smart. I have the same question as well.
1. If Kirby Smart is pegged to be a high profile head coach within the next 2-3 years, then why would UGA want to be in this situation looking for another DC so soon? Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me either.
2. If Saban is the brains behind Bama’s defense why is everyone buying Smart’s stock at an inflated price.
I would prefer to reach into the NFL ranks and bring in a guy that’s on the rise and wants to stick around as UGA’s DC for at least 5 years.

First of all, Many of you GEORGIA BULLDOG FANS,( NOT ALL) But MANY really live in a very small world. Any Coach worth of grain of salt would relish the opportunity to coach for a real defensive guy like SABAN, or a real Offensive guy like SPURRIER OR MEYER. What would adding Mark Richt to the equation bring. We ALL like Mark Richt, a great guy, a great offensive coordinator.
However he is NOT a Great Head Coach. He is a fantastic Offensive Recruiter, but DEFENSE is not something he has built at Georgia.
If Kirby Smart went to Georgia(his home school) he would fall off the radar for a head coaching job like a sled coming down Stone Mountain. It would take hime 3 to 4 years to build the talent back at UGA to compete at any sort of level and elevate his resume.
SABAN is a proven winner at the College Level year after year…say what you want about him moving around…..but he knows and his wife Terry know they are in a place where Championship are won and the President and A.D. support the program without political agendas like UGA deals with daily.
SMART stays at Alabama or takes a HEAD COACHING POSITION in another Conference.

That is one way to look at it. But from another perspective you could say UGA would be a perfect move for Smart. Look, regardless of how good of a DC Smart may be, whatever success the Bama defense achieves will be chalked up to Saban’s genius. Everyone assumes that Saban is pulling the strings, which he well may be. Smart will never be out of Saban’s shadow as long as he remains at Bama. On the other hand, everyone knows that UGA’s defense is awful. Any success they achieve in coming seasons will be attributed to the new DC, whomever that ends up being. If Smart ever wants to advance to a HC position at a top school he will have to remove the doubts that some people have about whether or not he is really running the defense. So, he can stay in Bama and probably keep fielding top defenses only to see the credit go to Saban or he can make a “lateral move” to a program where he will get credit for the success or failure of his defense. I’m not saying some team won’t take a chance and promote him directly to HC, but chances are no top program will do so. Put yourself in his shoes – stay where he is and be assured of relative success but without getting full credit for his efforts or go to UGA where he can have an immediate impact and the entire football world knows for sure that he is the man making the decisions.

If you can’t get a decent heading coaching position, then the monetary “green” of the septic tank top is better than being undervalued in a position where you have accomplished all you can. My thinking here is that Alabama doesn’t the cash to match a competitive offer eleswhere, like UGA. CMR make Smart a “Muschamp” like offer and you will get your man.
Think UGA can outmatch Alabama.

It’s not going to take 3-4 years to build the talent back up. Georgia’s problem isn’t talent.

Kirby can’t wait to get away from Satan. Bama looks down on outsiders(remember Bill Curry). He had a good record while at Bama, struggled vs. Auburn and was not wanted. Another reason was because he was a Tech man.Oh and by the way, Alabama has twice the trailers as does the great state of Georgia. Story confirmed by Goodyear Tire Co., mobile home division.

Who cares what Satan thinks, anyway. Let him comment on leaving one job for another. Yessir, if any body knows a good poker face it’s Mr. Chuckles himself.( No, I have not been contacted by Miami………)

Going to Bama from Miami is not a regression. Bama is paying him more so how is that a regression. Dawg fans just pissed that Richt can’t give them a national title and Saban did it in 3 years! Saban is the mastermind behind that defense any ways, not Smart.

South FL,
Dawgs were up by a point at half after being behind by 11. They played a helluva game and had a shot to tie it with less than a minute left with 3 big men already fouled out. This was a great effort against the #3 team in the land who have won 16 straight at their house.
Gotta love the fight and this new coach!
Go Dawgs!

Saban is a total a-hole. Seriously. Imagine that idiot telling people under him not to make lateral moves.
Saban’s career in chronological order:
– Defensive Asst at Kent St – 2 yrs
– Defensive Asst at Syracuse – 1 yr (lateral)
– Defensive Asst at West Virginia – 2 yrs (lateral)
– DB coach at Ohio State – 2 yrs
– Defensive Asst at Navy – 1 yr (took a step backwards)
– DB coach/DC at MSU – 2/2
This isn’t even considering his head coaching career.
This kind of crap is exactly why Smart should leave Saban asap, whether it be UGA or not. The guy is a self-absorbed ego freak. He might occasionally say the right things about his players, but he treats people working with him like children who can’t think for themselves.

Saban did jump around but I really do think when he got to the NFL he realized it wasn’t for him and college is where he wanted to be. I really think he will be at bama for the long haul and will rack up the championships

Haha you funny dandydon. Alabama is the Dallas cowboys, the New York Yankees, the LA Lakers of college football. Don’t get me wrong, i pull for the dawgs as long as they are not playing Alabama, but moving from Bama to UGA is not an upgrade. Smart will go to UGA to get out of Sabans shadow so he can get a head coaching job after next season. That is if his move doesn’t backfire and the dawgs have another sucky season.

UGA is leagues above ua as an institution. Everything is better, including the recruiting. Georgia high school football>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>sissy alabamers. Saban even thinks it’s a better place to live, that’s why he has a spread on Burton. Hahaha, you bammers, second rate state and university. Bow down chumps!!

Saban didn’t make any lateral moves. He moved on to a better job each time. Michigan State to LSU? It’s the SEC! Better job. LSU to Miami? It’s the NFL. Better job. Miami to Alabama? It’s ALABAMA!
