Was Saban sending a message to Smart?

Just listened to audio of Nick Saban’s final press conference in Pasadena today before he and the national champions flew back to Alabama.

Thought you’d be interested in Saban’s comments pertaining to assistant coaches making lateral career moves.

You could certainly interpret the remarks as pointed advice to Kirby Smart that he shouldn’t leave the defensive-coordinator job at Alabama for the same job at Georgia.

Said Saban:

“I’m always happy and interested for our coaches to be able to advance professionally, especially if it is a professional advancement in terms of a guy being a coordinator who can go be a head coach in a situation where he has a chance to be successful. . . .

“I’m not pleased when guys make lateral moves because it’s a little bit human nature to think, like my dad used to say, the grass is always greener on top of the septic tank. You always think it’s better someplace else. You kind of let your ego get involved, and you make moves that you shouldn’t make and really aren’t in your best interests for a career standpoint. So I’m not happy when guys do that. But anybody on our staff who can move up, we would like to help them do that.”

There were reports Thursday, including one during the telecast of the national-title game, that Texas Tech planned to interview Smart for its vacant head-coaching job. But Texas Tech’s president and athletics director denied the reports Thursday and again Friday.

Click here for a blog from earlier today on how long it had been since Georgia was unranked in the final polls.

I think Saban’s comments confirm two things: 1) That Smart is considering the Georgia DC job and 2) Saban is worried about losing him to Georgia.

I’m sick of hearing ALA fan say, “We can buy whoever we want” or “ALA will match any offer provided to Kirby”. Did ALA buy:

1) Mike Price
2) Mike Shula
3) Mike Dubose
4) Coach “Fran”
5) Ray Perkins

Nick Saban is a jackass and Kirby Smart used to dive bomb the chalk lines to keep from hitting somebody! In case you missed it last night, the better DC was wearing burnt orange. The only message Saban sent is “I have no class” by running the ball when Victory Formation takes care of business.

The “Grass is always greener over the septic tank” is an Erma Bombeck comment. It is official, Nick Saban’s Dad was Erma Bombeck. Look up a picture of her, you can see the family resemblence.

First off, calling Athens a septic tank is like saying Tech is legit. Athens is gorgeous and UGA is ranked near the top in many aspects of education. Check your facts. Saban is obviously a jerk and Richt is one of the best people in college football. Maybe Smart wants to work for someone who actually has a heart above freezing and maybe he wants to go somewhere where he can build his own legacy and stop living under someone else’s. UGA has top recruiting classes on the defensive side every year. Smart is the guy that can develop them.

Now that I’ve had a chance to hear from the Alabama fans on the board, I have a new respect for Ga Tech fans. They’re not nearly as angry as the Alabama fans. Relax ‘Bama fans. This is just the internet. Life will still go on no matter what someone says on here.

Is Smart really worth $750,000 and a 3 year contract, or whatever the supposed price is? Or is he just a pretty good DC who happens to be coaching at the right place at the right time? I think CMR is a good head coach and his job is safe for a while, but if UGA throws that kind of contract at Smart and it doesn’t pay off big time CMR will have plenty of company at the unemployment line (Adams & Evans). Do you think all 3 are willing to take that kind of gamble?

Saban’s a great coach and a egomaniac, so what he says shouldn’t matter. Kirby is good young coach and I would like to have him at UGA, but Richt would be wasting his time. Kirby is a flight risk! Richt is probably the most stable coach in the SEC. I’m sure it killed him to fire CWM. Richt wants to maintain stability. FLA is in turmoil, TENN is about to be on probation, Miles is on his last leg at LSU, Saban is about to lose his 2/3 of his defense to the NFL, Richt needs to bring in a DC that will coach his a$$ off and stay awhile. If Grantham fits those needs go get him! The Dawgs could have a special year in 2010.

Some of you people amaze me! I read some of the most idiotic things on these blogs UGA is a sinking ship really? UGliA has CONSISTENTLY been one of the best programs in the country over the last ten years although they haven’t won a national championship like other schools in the conference they are always in the conversation for winning the SEC and lets not kid ourselves people the SEC comes down to the same six teams every year in the east 1. Florida 2.UGA 3. Tenn in the west its always 1. LSU 2. Bama 3. Auburn and the games these teams play against each other often is a big factor on who comes out of each division. For the past few years (except this yr) the loss to florida has cost UGA a shot at the sec championship and a direct path to the bcs title game. I am a Georgia fan no doubt but I can be objective which some of you obviously can not. Success runs in cycles only five yrs ago florida was down three years ago bama was down and this year uga was down. Enjoy your schools success while it last because dark days will come again UGA is in the dark right now but the sun looks like it will be shining on our program soon and don’t be surprised if UGA is in the bcs title game within the next four years.

Gentlemen,

Let me shed a little light on why I would consider coaching Georgia’s Defense.

1) I will never get the credit for turning Alabama’s defense around; that credit will always go to Coach Saban.
2) Alabama was a sinking ship when Coach Saban and I came to Alabama and we were able to turn the program around, so I am not concerned about the current state of Georgia’s program.
3) My wife and I love Athens and would love to come back and make a difference in the community as well as the University of Georgia’s football program.
4) I need to find out if I can truly run the defense on my own without contributions or advise from Coach Saban. This would be a good challenge and opportunity for me.

After reading the comments posted on here, I cannot remember why I pulled so much for Alabama. Actually, almost all the UGA fans I spoke with before and after the game pulled for Alabama. Now that the game is over and we see the real class of Bama, it makes one wonder.

The game was OVER with 47 seconds left, but classless Saban had to run up the score instead of showing class and taking a knee inside the 5 yd line. The spontaneous comments listed above to his assistants are unbelievable and sound as much a threat as advice.

Coming home to your alma mater with a raise is NOT a lateral move. Saban has to be a helluva coach; no doubt about it. He deserves all the credit for pulling this program out of the outhouse to the top in such a short time. (Bama fans act like they have been on top for the last 50 years). He is an egomaniac and must be hell to work for. What other coach runs ahead of his team onto the field? What other coach prohibits his assistants from talking to the media? It may be good training, but at what a price. Wonder what the stresses on the family life are in Ala compared to UGA?

We cannot know the true inside situation. Kirby has been in Athens and in Tuscaloosa and I am sure he will make the decision he feels is best for his family and his career. Hope there are not other personalities in Athens that would present an obstacle. Would welcome any move to improve the team, but not just to satisfy someone’s ego. If he doesn’t want the job and I hope it is an aggressive offer, I am confident CMR will find the right guy.

Go Dawgs!

The only thing that makes me feel better is that Urban Meyer isn’t at Florida any more, so maybe we CAN play for the SEC Championship soon.

Oh, wait…he was just kidding?
Or is he really gone?
Or half way out the door?
Or half way in the door?

A fellow UGA fan (nopefully not a fellow alumnus) mixed quite a metaphore in asking, how many times will Georgia be left at the alter with an empty sack. Just what does an empty sack have to do with an alter. But, following her lead, I’d like to say if it is even assumed Richt goes anywhere near a church (let alone an alter), some reporter with nothing to write, fan with nothing to do, or assistant coach wanting a raise is sticking a sck in his hands and pointing to it to suite their own purpose, whatever it may be. Everybody take a deep breath and throw that damned sack down, but do NOT stomp it, for it isn’t empty and you wouldn’t want to get its contents on your shoe.

If Kirby does come back to Athens, he’ll be here a long time after ‘Brother’ Saban has split for parts yet to be determined. He left Miami because, like Petrino, he found that his coaching style just wouldn’t work with adults. So long as he can intimidate kids that are afraid of losing their scholarships, or coaches that are afraid of losing their jobs, he does just fine. Then there’s that ego. Tide fans, the worst thing that could have happened to you and your new ‘hero’ is for you to have won the NC. The man has now added that notch to his personal list and will be easily lured to the ‘next big thing’…USC?…maybe…back to the Big Ten…doubtful…but gone from Tuscaloosa in two years…I’ll bet on it and you guys will be back making excuses like you were under poor Mike ‘I don’t have a clue’ Shula, or having to fire coaches before they ever even coach a game…and you’ll deserve it because the one thing that Bear didn’t leave you was ‘class’ or ’style’ – and no, hounds-tooth ain’t the kind of style I’m talking about.

Texas Tech is NOT better as head coach than DC at Alabama.

NOT.

UGA Bulldogs is NOT better as DC than DC at Alabama.

Sorry.

Tell it like it is.

Nick Saban for all his faults, absolutely tells it like it is.

Always has.

Good lesson to learn yourself Tim Tucker.

Mark Bradley, I will give you credit for that admission. Big XII is 2-5 in BCS NC Games and SEC 6-0.

Big XII hype.

SEC is 3-0 over Big XII in BCS NC Games including last year AND this year.

3-0 also all bowls SEC over Big XII this year.

3-0 also all bowls SEC over Big XII last year.

Stick to basketball, you know nothing about football. Nothing.

Never have.

I said Alabama would KILL TEXAS, who BEAT NO ONE.

37-21.

That will work.

1 SEC NC is once.

2 SEC NC in a row is REPEAT.

3 SEC NC in a row is HAT TRICK.

4 SEC NC in a row now is The Golden Sombrero.

Mark Bradley, you would know sir.

What is it called when The Mighty SEC wins the NC again next season for our 5th in a row, sir ?

3 Polls 3 Final Polls have UGA Bulldogs ranked in the Top 25 at 22, 22, and 24.

UGA Bulldogs are ranked in Several of the Official BCS Polls Final Top 25 :

Number 22 Kenneth Massey Official BCS Poll Final Ranking 22 UGA Bulldogs.

Number 24 Peter Wolfe Official BCS Poll Final Ranking 24 UGA Bulldogs.

Number 24 Jeff Sagarin ELO-CHESS Rankings.

Where is the STINKING ACC GA tek fans ? Jeff Sagarin RANKINGS.

Remember ?

3-4 ACC Bowl Record

2-5 PAC-10 Bowl Record

6-4 SEC Bowl Record including UGA Bowl Win number 26 three have more.

Big XII ? Not even a Winning Bowl Record.

ACC and Big XII had a LOSING BOWL RECORD coming into this season.

ACC and Big XII BOTH still have LOSING BOWL RECORD.

ACC added to it.

Coach Richt and Rodney Garner have PULLED the scholarship OFFER to B.J. Butler a 3-Star undersized 240 lbs. Defensive End who has 4.65 speed in the 40-yard dash. He has committed to Charlie Strong at Louisville.

This opens up a Scholarship Offer.

Give it to Mack Brown.

Starting 1997, Mike Bobo’s brilliant Senior Season, UGA had been ranked every year for 13 Consecutive Years in the Final AP Poll. We had not been ranked every year in the Final Coaches’ Poll. There were other polls we had not made the Top 25 of. Frankly, we have had several seriously flawed, underachieving, and greatly disappointing seasons since the day DJ Shockley graduated with Honors from UGA following the 2005 Season and SEC Championship.

We have messed up in Recruiting.

We have had serious holes, demanding 4 and 5-Star Commitments, and have failed miserably at filling those glaring obvious holes. We have done this while we have instead stockpiled our 85 Scholarships at positions where instead we were already 5 Deep.

GLARING HOLES :

Defensive Ends, for example. Signing 5 in 3 weeks now will only make this WORSE.

Safety, for example.

Cornerbacks, for example signing only 1 a year for 5 consecutive years now.

Defensive Tackles now having only gotten 1 year 5 years in a row now.

Fullbacks after this up-coming season.

Also, it appeared obvious that we would have to move stockpiled receivers to defensive backs and failed miserably on that as well.

And, we should have long ago not waited until recently, moved stockpiled linebackers to Defensive Ends.

Of course, Coach Richt has had a real problem in his decisions of coaches’ on his staff, surrounding himself with YES MEN, buddies, college roommates, and out-of-position position coaches with zero experience at the position Coach Richt put them in, and not one coach on his staff with 1 single solitary day of NFL Coaching Experience.

He still doesn’t have 1 single coach with NFL Coaching Experience.

Not 1.

We did not play Knowshon Moreno, instead redshirting him, and therefore only got to see the best running back in UGA history over the last 25 seasons, 2 years. Very sad decisions, all of these.

We did redshirt Washaun Ealey, and then three-quarters through Game 5, ripped the Redshirt OFF Washaun Ealey. Another blunder in personnel for a brain trust that frankly has had way too many of these.

But, we have played a very tough schedule, and as I predicted all along, we have ended up outside the Final AP Poll Top 25, and outside the Final USA Today Coaches’ Poll.

There is nothing that you can do about that.

Playing Texas A&M who ends with a losing record 6-7 on December 28 in the Bowl Number 11 of 35 bowls, is not going to get you ranked no matter the 44-20 obliteration. And frankly the losses to not 1 but 2 unranked 7-6 teams who otherwise would not have had a winning record for 2009-2010, Tennessee vols and Kentucky Wildcats, sealed our fate, despite the win over Number 13 GA tek.

This gave us SEVEN (7) LOSSES to teams NOT RANKED in the Final AP Poll Top 25 in the Coach Richt Era.

We have to cut that crap out.

BAD LOSSES. 7.

Frankly, you can add the LOSS to GA tek 2008 to that list of BAD LOSSES too, although they barely did end up in the Final AP Poll Top 25 in 2008. But, they would NOT have, had they not beat UGA in 2008.

But, it is quite clear that Coach Richt has 7 Losses to teams NOT RANKED in the Final AP Poll Top 25.

Kentucky and Tennessee vols both at 7-6 at no point this season were going to end up in the Final AP Poll Top 25. How do you lose to such teams who otherwise would not have even had a winning record. A study of both teams shows that NEITHER KY nor the vols BEAT ANYONE.

And, they beat Coach Richt.

HOW DO YOU LOSE TO A TEAM LIKE THAT ?

BAD COACHING STAFF.

Also :

7 LOSSES to teams NOT RANKED in Final AP Poll Top 25 Coach Richt Era.

18-20 against teams Ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 25 Coach Richt Era.

I don’t have to tell you these are NOT the results of an Elite Program with Top Broyles Award Type Coaching Staff in the Coach Richt Era.

9 years, you don’t have 7 Losses to UNRANKED Final AP Poll Top 25 teams.

9 years, you don’t have LOSING RECORD 18-20 vs Final AP Poll Top 25 teams.

Coach Richt Era.

You don’t have EITHER of these absolute facts, and be Elite.

Your Coaching STAFF in total is to blame.

Coach Richt has done a SORRY JOB of hiring a Coaching Staff for him to be CEO over.

None of his entire coaching staff have ever coached in the NFL 1 day.

We pay him enough money that he should either take back over making play call decisions, which is his only claim to fame and why we hired him, or he has to hire an ENTIRE COACHING STAFF made up of current NFL Coaches.

Do I mind if he hires a Defensive Backs’ Position Coach from the NFL and makes him the Defensive Coordinator ? Oh, I think that is exactly what he must do.

He whiffed on Chavis last season, when I told him he had to go get Chief.

He didn’t listen.

A lot of that is the blame of the other UGA Bulldog posters, who had all these wild nasty statements they wanted to make about Willie Martinez ALL LAST SEASON, when they could have instead, gone past that on to the SOLUTION.

And, you were not unified what you wanted.

Congratulations though.

By doing what you have been doing for several years now, harping on just only Willie Martinez, you got him FIRED.

Coach Richt’s college roommate Willie Martinez FIRED.

It was a tough choice for an SEC Head Football Coach, who has said for years, that he would NOT be making ANY changes on his staff.

I told him he could either make wholesale changes to his coaching staff, or he could leave with the lot of them.

I pointed out our issues on Offense.

I pointed out our issues on Recruiting.

I pointed out our issues on Special Teams.

I pointed out our issues at DE and Safety and Cornerbacks.

I pointed out our issues with well over 120 suspensions by Coach Richt in his 9 years.

You ?

Willie Martinez sucks. Fire Willie Martinez.

Congratulations.

You got what you wanted.

Moreover, the real issue remains that Coach Richt has surrounded himself with YES MEN, and has 0 with 1 day NFL Coaching Experience.

Excuse me, Coach Richt SUCKS at HIRING A COACHING STAFF.

He has sucked at it for 9 years and counting.

He SUCKS AT HIRING COACHES TODAY JANUARY 9, 2010.

3 WEEKS AND 1 DAY before NATIONAL SIGNING DAY.

No Defensive Coordinator.

No Defensive Backs Coach.

No Defensive Ends Coach.

No Linebackers Coach.

No Special Teams Kick-Off Coach.

No Special Teams Kick-Off Return Coach.

No Special Teams Punt Return Coach.

Have you read the quotes of our Commitments ? Have you ?

Florida HIRED A GREAT DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR, YESTERDAY.

Coach Richt WHIFFED ON THAT ONE TOO, and Coach Richt SHOULD HAVE HIRED HIM BEFORE Florida even knew they needed 1. Coach Richt fired his Defensive Coordinator A FREAKING MONTH before Charlie Strong LEFT as Florida’s Defensive Coordinator.

We ain’t beating no Florida, us with our staff and them with their staff, by DIRECT CONTRAST. We can’t get THOSE RECRUITS. They want THOSE COACHES, not Coach Richt’s assemblage of nobodies all out of position to teach them what they need to enhance their career. And, they are NOT SURROUNDED by the players Florida has, not here. We have no one in our entire Secondary like we always used to have my whole lifetime.

Stacy Searels better get off his butt and do something with all these Offensive Linemen we already had here when we hired him. He has NOT lived up to his billing. Has he ?

When you open the UGA Media Guide, the 1st thing you see if the COACHING STAFF.

Then, the players.

WE DON’T HAVE A COACHING STAFF AND HAVE NOT HAD ONE, AND COACH RICHT DOESN’T GIVE A CRAP.

3 WEEKS AND DAY BEFORE SIGNING DAY, and NO DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR ?

God Almighty Above.

We have a former UGA wide receiver whose dad was a great tailback for us as Running Back Coach.

We have a former running back at UTC Chattanooga who then became running backs’ coach at several places including South Carolina, who is our Wide Receivers’ Coach.

We have an Offensive Coordinator who has never worked anywhere but at UGA (except 1 year as QB coach at Jacksonville State) who has never held the position of Offensive Coordinator anywhere in his lifetime. His play calls are BOOED LOUDLY by Sanford Stadium fans all the time.

All the time.

He gets in 3rd and long and runs the ball.

We have a Tight Ends Coach who can’t figure out that Orson Charles is our Best Tight End. This Tight Ends Coach is in fact a former Quarterback. God Almighty is all I can say. What the hell does a freaking QB know about Tight Ends ?

OR ANY OF THESE OTHER ALL OUT OF POSITION COACHES ?

Not 1 of them has 1 day experience coaching in the NFL.

That’s it for Coach Richt’s Coaching Staff.

There isn’t anyone else.

THAT STAFF has taken the Number 7 Recruiting Class we, the fans of UGA Bulldogs, have handed them.

AVERAGE NUMBER 7 RANKINGS BOTH RIVALS AND SCOUT.COM EVERY YEAR FOR 10 YEARS IN A ROW NOW OF THE COACH RICHT ERA :

And gone :

18-20 vs the Final AP Poll Top 25 for 9 years now.

7 Losses to NOT RANKED teams in the Final AP Poll Top 25 for 9 years now.

Don’t give me this B.S. this CRAP that all we need is a Defensive Freaking Coordinator.

Gator in the Hootch,

Nice comments about the recruiting class that UF is bringing in. Congrats. One thing, LSU had the #1 class this past season. They lost to Penn State.

I also wonder, if UF is going to have the “projected # 1″ class, then why did Meyer almost bail on Florida? I think he knew LWT (life without Tebow), was going to be be tougher now that he has to actually start coaching again and break in another QB. We all know Brantley isn’t going to cut it.

And before every UF fan this side of the Mason Dixon jumps my comment, I hope Meyer a speedy recovery. We need coaches like him, keeps the SEC competitive at least the East anyway..

At Georgia, he’ll make at least $1 mil per year with tons of perqs, incentives, etc. At bama, he’ll make only $300-$400K–chicken feed for the best D coordinator in the U.S.!! Come home to Athens—the money’s waiting!!!!

01Hawk,

Funny what a NC can do to a fan, isn’t it? A task that in no way, shape, form, or fashion did you contribute to. Let’s not forget before Saban got to Alabama, you guys were crying that same sad song UGA is now. Even when Saban got there, fans still wasn’t sure he was the guy. Then he lost to Boise State last year, you guys were ready for him to get fire.

All of a sudden he, (without the help of his assistants, if you let him tell it) wins the NC for Alabama, and it gives a free past to talk crap about anyone else? Well Congrats. Class has alluded another NC team in the SEC, or at least ifs fans. Instead of enjoying it with your parades or whatever, you felt the need to post here. Again, congrats.

But remember this, he has a NC at 2 schools. The USC job is about to be open if it isn’t already. Saban, unofficially just put his name at the top of that list of coaches. Good luck next season.

I read yesterday that David Pollock twittered that UGA would be announcing DC today with good news. Could be Smart, I don’t think so though. Also in our Mark Bradley blog yesterday there was hints that Grantham ( D Cowboys DL coach) + llinebacker coach were coming. Neither one too bad.

Kirby loves Athens….Athens loves Kirby….let’s get together baby!

The fact that Saban is trying hard to keep him says alot about Kirby’s talent. Pay him whatever it takes.

And as far as UGA being a step down, heh, heh, heh. The football program may not be up to Bama’s right now, but UA and Tuscalloosa will never be able to touch what UGA/Athens has to offer,
