Unranked in final polls for first time since . . .

So how long had it been since Georgia ended the season unranked in either the Associated Press or coaches’ final poll, as happened today?

The last time it happened was . . . 1996.

This season, victories over Georgia Tech in the regular-season finale and Texas A&M in the Independence Bowl did not catapult the Dogs into the Top 25 of  the final AP or coaches’ polls, which were released this morning.

The last time Georgia was unranked in either final poll was Jim Donnan’s first season as coach, when the Dogs went 5-6 in ‘96.

Since then, Georgia had been ranked in the final AP poll every year and in the final coaches’ poll every year except one (the exception being 2006, when the Dogs were unranked in the final coaches’ poll but 23rd in the final AP poll).

Before this season, Georgia had been ranked in the top 10 of the final coaches’ poll six of the previous seven seasons.

In today’s rankings, the Dogs were in the “also receiving votes” category of both polls. They received seven points in the AP balloting, ranking 33rd, and 13 points in the coaches’ poll, ranking 32nd. Georgia finished the season with an 8-5 record.

Absolutely a disgrace. Looking at the quality of the SEC they should have been top 25.

Willie didn’t show up again today!

ESPN rules college football and they hate UGA. It is dumb that we are ranked as far back as we are. The BCS says play a tough non-conference schedule and we do. UGA had the 2nd toughest schedule in the nation this year and the toughest last year. I guess we need to play Tennessee Tech 3 times like Bama and Florida to be in contention. It is not worth playing tough games if you don’t get any respect for it. UGA should not be anywhere near the top because they were not a great team but we should be #25. Go Dawgs! I can’t wait til September!

Everyone who knows a punt from a goal post knew Willie’s days were numbered two years ago. That is what makes me think that Evans forced Richt to fire him. Otherwise, why would Richt be in this mess now? Could Richt not see this coming when most everyone did or did he think there’s no way I’m going to fire Willie, which led to him not having anyone lined up for the job.

I just got my cable turned off b/c I cannot stand how ESPN treats the Dawgs. They have the nerve to think we lost to Kentucky. I will have you know that of the 10,000 fans left in the stadium during the 4th quarter, none of them told me we lost.

Good afternoon Dawgnation!

Listen up boys and girls…the polls are out and they are what they are.

Let us not complain too loudly…we must reason with our brains not our hearts.

The truth is we finished with five losses. We are not in the top 25 and we shouldn’t be.

But all is not lost. We will be back in the Top 10 where we belong very soon. Before the 2010 season is over, we will be back. Believe it.

We don’t have to start out highly ranked, or ranked at all for that matter, to be the SEC champs next year.

Let Bama crow about their victory. They earned it. But their fans and Tony Barnhardt better quit smoking that silly pipe if they think we are not going to have a say about who wins the SEC this coming season.

The Gay-tors have fooled themselves into thinking they can just reload every year and keep winning.

Un-uh…nope…ain’t gonna happen this time. Their run is officially over.

Just wait and see how many starters and back-ups they wind up losing before January 15th. That “two deep at every position” is history.

Tennessee? They are definitely re-building. Between graduation, underclassmen jumping to the NFL and the Knoxville city jail population explosion, they may have to play 22 freshmen.

LSU? “Your such a blockhead, Charlie Brown!” Their QB is …um…er… how do I say it?…challenged?… in the area of decision making. And now they have no one to throw it to. Maybe Coach PJ can give ‘em a few pointers. And not even their coaching staff can manage a game clock, much less the whole game.

They embarrassed the SEC almost as bad as those Stricken Chickens from Columbia did during their bowl game.

Well I think that about covers it as far as league dominance is concerned. I’d say we are in pretty good shape comparatively speaking.

I guess I should mention the techies…wait…my Mama told me if I couldn’t say something nice…but… dang it!…nah…ain’t even worth my time.

2009 season is history. Dawgs will rebound and win at least 9 games next year. The defense was improved in the last two games but it has miles to go before it could ever be considered the Junkyard caliber. By looking at the physical stats of the recruits it looks like we might be short on beef. We’ve lacked a good pass rush the last couple of years and it has shown on the scoreboard. We lacked predator LB and DB’s. Few turnovers. In fact our offense has put us in terrible TO positions. So, realistically, there may not be that much improvement from a talent perspective.

Why in the **** are Tech fans still wandering onto UGA blogs and acting like they are good. We beat them soundly, a real men against boys beatdown. Then they lose their bowl game to Iowa? Not Texas or Boise State or Florida, but Iowa. One of the lucky teams that benefited from having 10 teams in the BCS instead of 8. Not a conference champion, not a powerhouse program, and with nobody on their roster most fans have ever heard of.

If I were a tech fan, I wouldn’t talk football unless I knew there were only ACC fans in the room. Tech was an extreme disapointment for their conference losing their two biggest out of conference games. Very nice representation of their conference.

How does it feel to lose to an ‘irrelevant’ team?

Dawgs88

January 8th, 2010
4:25 pm

I don’t know what some of my fellow Dawgs fans are smoking but UGA hasn’t won a National Championship since 1980. I think Richt will make the turn around and win some SEC’s, but a National Champion head coach has yet to be seen. If Richt can get the defense straightened out and get some disciplined aggression on both sides of the ball then he can win a National Championship. It’s all about how he changes and runs the programs in the future.

By the way (30-24) hahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well buds, its always dark before the dawn, so lets hope upon hope that CMR can wade through the coaching mess he is in, and find a DC somewhere who will do a good job at UGA. Well, after all, it is his job, or in reality, is it Evans’ job, or Adams’ job? I dunno, but somebody had better get off the pot and get the job done.

Wow, you dawg fans sure can spin it. You must all work for the Obozo administration. Would you wake up, you went 8-5 for Gods sake…..what do you expect! You’re one big win this season was an UPSET of GT. If you played your season the way you played Tech, maybe you too would have been ranked. And will you please stop complaining about the LSU game! I think that running back from LSU is still running through Athens, and has not been touched yet. IF YOU WOULD HAVE TACKLED HIM, YOU WOULD HAVE WON!!! Good teams DO NOT lose those games. They also do not lose to Kentucky….at home. Problem that you UGA fans have not faced up to is that your football team is not as good as you think. And for the ‘ESPN is biased’ idiot out there….yeah I am sure the folks in Bristol, CT are shaking in their boots over a few trailer trash fans. What a loser. Fan poll? Oh, you mean the one that has Notre Dame #21? Yeah, that is a good poll.

UGA has not competed seriously on the national stage since 1980. I know, you have won 2 SEC championships, that is really impressive. Tell you what. Ask Alabama how many they have won.

And as for the final poll. There are more teams from the Big 10 in the top 10 then any other conference. But I guess the poll means nothing if UGA isn’t in it, huh?

Hey Techies…you may be all tingly and creamy about your final rating, but we know that you know that the team that beat you donw last November 28, was not only better than you were that day, but for the season. Regardless, you lose five games you don’t get on the final list. I understand that. But the season will be remembered by the fact that we kicked your butts and will again next season and the season(s) after that. Get used to it – then again, you already have…heh, heh, heh.

Irrelevent, eh?

What does it say to you that you had your best opportunity to establish some semblance of a streak against UGA and you C-H-O-K-E-D!

Your best team in YEARS and you C-H-O-K-E-D!

Your first BCS bowl, ever, EVER, and you C-H-O-K-E-D!

Your first chance since 1990 to finish in the top 10 and you C-H-O-K-E-D!

Iowa tried to give you the trophy by pulling one of the STUPIDIST, most INSANE, most BONE-HEADED moves ever in the history of college football…a fake FG from the 4 yard line with a 3 point lead…and you C-H-O-K-E-D!

155 total yards?

TOTAL? AYFKM?

Perhaps Coach Man-Boobies should add just a few more plays to that one-page repertoire he uses!

And maybe, just maybe he can sign a better shot-putter to play QB, because if Nesbitt can’t run, he is useless. USELESS!

Who are you losing? BE-BE, Morgan, Burnett, Dwyer…man, you will be very lucky to win 6 games next year!

Sucks 2 B U! Here’s hoping that you don’t….

Hey ‘ugaaccountant’, there is a world out there besides the SEC. Obviously, you are not a college football fan. Iowa was #4 in the nation until Ricky Stanzi (their QB) got hurt before the Ohio State game. They played a freshman QB in that game, and lost in OT to the Buckeyes, which wrapped up another Big 10 championship for Ohio State. They went on to win the Rose Bowl and finished ranked #5 in the polls. Iowa finished 11-2 and ranked #7. And before you bash the Big 10, they finished with more teams in the top 10 then any other conference. If you remove Florida and Alabama from the SEC, who is left? So the argument that the SEC is the toughest conference in football is about as valid as UGA is a good football team.

Hope you enjoyed Shreveport, and have a happy irrelevant new year.

We’ve known for a while this whole rating/bowl system is broken. It was broken when we were the pre-season #1 and it is broken now.

Regardless, UGA is part of this system, and we have to take the good with the bad. This year we lost 5 games and deserve not to be ranked, even though on any given day UGA can beat most of the teams ranked 10-25.

The polls get it wrong throughout the season, (LSU #4, USC top 5, GA Tech #7) why expect the polls to be correct now?
