Unranked in final polls for first time since . . .

So how long had it been since Georgia ended the season unranked in either the Associated Press or coaches’ final poll, as happened today?

The last time it happened was . . . 1996.

This season, victories over Georgia Tech in the regular-season finale and Texas A&M in the Independence Bowl did not catapult the Dogs into the Top 25 of  the final AP or coaches’ polls, which were released this morning.

The last time Georgia was unranked in either final poll was Jim Donnan’s first season as coach, when the Dogs went 5-6 in ‘96.

Since then, Georgia had been ranked in the final AP poll every year and in the final coaches’ poll every year except one (the exception being 2006, when the Dogs were unranked in the final coaches’ poll but 23rd in the final AP poll).

Before this season, Georgia had been ranked in the top 10 of the final coaches’ poll six of the previous seven seasons.

In today’s rankings, the Dogs were in the “also receiving votes” category of both polls. They received seven points in the AP balloting, ranking 33rd, and 13 points in the coaches’ poll, ranking 32nd. Georgia finished the season with an 8-5 record.

meh – doesn’t mean much. Since the season was already in the toilet, key points of focus like wins over tech and Auburn and a big bowl victory are the things that matter. Hopefully, an upgraded defensive staff will let us rebound in a big way next year.

Maybe this will produce a little off-season motivation in the weight room and mat drills!

This shows what the national press thinks of our program. I thought with a convincing bowl victory we would be at least number 25. This should be used to motivate the team for next year.

Would you rather be ranked 13th in the nation or be Georgia State Champions? I thought so. Me too!

Hopefully the way we ended the season with wins in 4 out of the last 5 games can help encourage some of the young guys for next year!

I thought we might slip into the top 25 after the bowl as well but honestly, with five losses, you can’t be surprised at the exclusion. I doubt voters took the LSU game robbery into consideration.

Yep a down year where we still beat the ACC Champ at thier house! Bring on the 2010 season. I am fired up for the Spring game to see our QB duel! We got big things coming for the DAWGS! A QB that has a arm for Green, a solid O line for Ealey/King, and a new leader for the Junk Yard DAWG Dee!
GOOOOOOOO DAWGS!!!!!

Unfortunately we probably won’t be ranked very high in the preseason next year…which does leave room for getting snubbed for a title spot. (that’s of course assuming we go undefeated haha)

The final polls are crap just like the rest of the season. The Dogs would beat or have beat some many losers ranked ahead of them. It appears to be a beauty contest more than a football ability ranking.

Yes!!! Alabama won now we can chant SEC because they won and we had nothing to do with it!! We should have definitely been ranked to end the year we beat teams like Texas A&M and Carolina. Those are quality teams right????

NCDAWG

I think the dawgs will be ranked in the pre-season top-25. Since 2002 UGA and Auburn are the only teams to win the SEC and not play in BCS championship game with UGA doing it twice.

Sounds about right.I can only hope that the PASSION comes back next year and I don’t have to try and explain to my OSU friend that even on a bad I can comfort myself with their 0 and 13 record versus the SEC. I want mettenberger and murray to take(with a unbeaten record would be the only way) us to the NC game to stomp an over-rated big12/10(!!?) . In the Lords name we pray.

GaGator

The reasons the dawgs can’t seem to beat the Gators is the truck salesman is always
1-2 steps behind Urban Meyer. The Gators lost 4 excellent coaches(they moved up to better positions, one a Head coach), they weren’t fired like those defensive wizzards at UGA.

Meyer has now filled all open coaching positions, and is out adding to ESPN #1 2010 recruiting class, what the h&ll is Richt doing?

They hace CMU ranked and UGA isn’t. That shows u what the polls mean after the top 10. NOTHING. And UGA, if they finished 13th, would still consider that to be a sucky season unlike Tech who is celebrating.

A good question to ask of the schools ranked ahead of UGA is how many teams did they play who ended up in a bowl game? I know it doesn’t take much to be in a bowl game but the only two schools who did not go to a bowl that UGA played was Vanderbilt and Tenn. Tech. I think the schedule and losing Stafford & Moreno played a bigger role than honest football fans want to admit.

Big surprise, ESPN says Georgia is unranked, fans say #14.

ESPN says Georgia shouldn’t go to Natl Champ in 2002, 13-1, won the SEC Champ, whatever. ESPN says Georgia not #1 in 2007, whatever.

Georgia, worse than West Virginia, and Clemson? Please.

The fans say #14.

With the 5 years when Richt was OC for FSU, when Richt got them to the Natl Champship

ADD georgia’s 2 Natl Champ’s under Richt so far, 2002 & 2007, add his 90 SEC wins in 9 seasons, and Richt is as good as it gets.

Georgia Natonal Champs 2010..here's why

January 8th, 2010
12:46 pm

Both times in the past when Richt finished a year with only 8 wins, 2001 & 2006, the next year he won the Natl Champ, 2002 & 2007.

2010 Georgia will win the SEC and the Natl Champ. richt ALWAYS follows an 8 win season with a Natl Champ.

Let’s not forget a couple of things about UGA football, both good and not-so-good:
1) Their 13 seasons with 8+ wins per season is UNMATCHED.
NO team can make that claim!
2) Now let’s not forget that 2 years ago the Dawgs recruiting
was only slightly below the caliber of the Tide’s. Thus its
fairly obvious why this years teams barely won 8 games;
COACHING. CMR needs to get his stuff together and hire
good coaches to get these highly rated recruits to play up
to their capabilities.

Wow, UGA won the national championship in 2002 and 2007?? That must be news to Ohio St and LSU who have big glass trophies with “BCS National Champion” on them. They better send those to Athens! They must not realize that St. Richt is national champion every year in the fan’s minds…
