Smart? Grantham? The beat goes on

Updated 10:05 p.m.

So tonight we find out who is college football’s national champion, and soon we should find out who is Georgia’s new defensive coordinator.

There’s always a possibility of a Mark Fox-type hire, meaning a hire who doesn’t get mentioned in the rumor mill until the deal is done.   But if that’s not the case, then the recent course of the process suggests that one or more of the remaining candidates have been sort of busy lately.

Kirby Smart has been busy preparing Alabama’s defense for tonight’s national championship game. Todd Grantham has been busy preparing the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive line for Saturday’s NFL playoff game against Philadelphia.

Smart has acknowledged talking with Mark Richt, although he said Tuesday they hadn’t talked “much” and that “he’s not offered me anything.”  If that’s the case -– and of course it might be semantics – you’d think they’d have a lot to talk about in the next couple of days.

There was a report this afternoon by a Dallas radio station — ESPN 103.3 FM –  that unnamed sources said Smart would interview for the vacant head-coaching job at Texas Tech soon after the national-championship game.  But shortly after the radio report, Texas Tech athletics director Gerald Myers told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal: “That’s something that I’m not aware of.  I know he’s a good young coach and a good young prospective coach, but at this point we haven’t made any plans to contact him.’’

Grantham has been on Richt’s radar since the failed pursuit of Virginia Tech’s Bud Foster.  Not coincidentally, Grantham started his coaching career with the Hokies and is highly regarded by Foster, among others.  As you’ve heard, the word from Cowboys camp is that Grantham has been approached by Georgia.  The Cowboys are an interesting situation, with head coach Wade Phillips‘  job security not completely clear despite making the playoffs.

There’s a recruiting “dead” period for the national coaches’ convention next week, but when Georgia returns to the recruiting trail on Jan. 15 for the final sprint to signing day, Richt obviously needs to have his new DC in recruits’ homes. (Of course, if the hire were Grantham and the Cowboys were to go to the Super Bowl. . . . )

Still no word from Rennie Curran on whether he, like 17 other UGA underclassmen since 2001, will enter the NFL draft early.

Curran did attend a UGA team meeting on Wednesday,  an indication he hadn’t made a final decision to leave. He said last week that he’d like to talk to the new DC before deciding, and maybe he’ll have a chance to do so. Underclassmen have until Jan. 15 to declare for the draft.

Two more notes:

– Georgia tight end Orson Charles today was named to the Football Writers Association’s Freshman All-America Team.

– And as expected, freshman offensive lineman Kolton Houston and JUCO-transfer safety Jakar Hamilton enrolled early and began classes at UGA today.

And please follow me on Twitter for the latest UGA news and notes.

Alt,

Thanks for the response. I will disagree with you on it, however. I understand your position, but to go to that degree (perfect year, day, and hour)….not sure about that. It was obvious to most of us that it should have been done 12 months earlier. It was a downward plummet on defense since he took over (in spite of Marcus Howard putting the team on his back the end of ‘07…he made the secondary look good), not to be confused with a spiral downward. Decisions that are that obvious have to be made in a timely fashion and not allowed to bring the entire program down. That’s why you had such an outpouring of passion when we stunk on defense early this year. We knew CMR wouldn’t (and shouldn’t) make the change in mid-season so we had to endure it all year.

BTW, the injury thing in ‘08 was used, used, and overused. It was spoken of so much, that it took on a life of its own. While it was significant, it did not make the defense that bad. Other teams had and have injuries, also.

I still say this blog sounds like going on a long trip with two little girls in the back seat squealing, are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? For the love of sanity people, it is cold out , play a little ice hockey, go for a walk, go see a movie, stand on your head!……CMR knows pretty much what he wants to do….and if you have noticed, he is doing a great job of keeping it quiet. Wouldnt it be a little more logical to wait and see what he does , and then comment? I personally have all the confidence in the world he will make the correct choice, based on availability of candidates, and the money the UGA brass has alotted for this hire…….My gosh just reading some of these posts, especially the ones from the mean spirited crowd, …..just makes my ass burn

I will say this: Anyone who has won 90 games in his first 9 years deserves all UGA fans support. CMR is one heck of a good coach, and an even better man ! Now just ask any of these negative drips who post here, can their coach claim such a consistant winning record? Guess what? the answer is NO.

If I hear another Big XII fan HYPE your lousy conference, I’ll PUKE.

Congratulations Alabama. SEC has Won The Golden Sombrero.

4 in a Row BCS NC Game Wins by The Mighty SEC.

Big XII in BCS National Championship Games is 2-5. (SEC 6-0.)

Who the hell do you think is better ?

3 of the Big XII 5 BCS NC Game LOSSES are head-to-head with SEC.

Including the LAST TWO (2) IN A ROW.

For the record, Texas could not stop Mark Ingram or Richardson as both gained over 100 yards rushing.

Texas, on the other hand, in dire need of a running game, could not run at ALL against Alabama.

Big XII vs SEC in Bowl Games 2009-2010 Season 0-3.

Big XII vs SEC in Bowl Games 2008-2009 Season 0-3.

If Mack Brown is worth $5 million a year, Coach Nick Saban is worth $15 million a year. Texas beat only 1 Final AP Poll Top 25 team, Nebraska. And, Nebraska has not beat a Final AP Poll Top 25 team all 4 years in which Suh played 54 games.

Alabama beat Number 9 Virginia Tech who beat Nebraska.

Alabama beat Number 2 Florida who beat Number 3 Cincinnati.

Alabama beat Number 4 Texas WHO BEAT NO ONE.

36-21 God Almighty Big XII.

Give it up Big XII with your 2-5 in the BCS NC Game to SEC now 6-0.

Go play someone. Beat them. Then, HYPE the hell out of your conference that you deserve to be in the BCS NC Game again.

The NC Game was The SEC Championship Game. 2 previous years ago, LSU was Number 1 and UGA Number 2 in the Final AP Poll. It will be the same for The SEC this season, Florida Number 2 and Alabama Number 1 in the Final AP Poll.

BEST CONFERENCE IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL ?

Give it up the rest of you LOSERS.

The Orange Bowl featuring Iowa and Georgia Tech drew a 6.8 rating Tuesday night. This rating is better than the Orange’s last four ratings of ACC “BCS” Bowl Games.

The ACC has Won 1 Orange Bowl period since the 1996 Season Started.

Great ACC.

Give it the hell up.

The Fiesta Bowl drew an 8.2. . This game was not

ACC who had a LOSING RECORD in bowl games before this year, added to it with another LOSING RECORD in Bowl Games this year 3-4.

5 ACC teams did not even make a bowl game. ACC had contracts for more bowl games and had to give up their bowl games. Wonderful.

PAC-10 went 2-5 in Bowl Games for the worst performance.

SEC went 6-4 in Bowl Games for the Best Performance.

The Big XII went 4-4.

The Big East went 4-2.

The Big 10 went 4-3.

Duds of College Football ? ACC “conference.”

Followed very closely by the PAC-10.

Please note there have been 105 UGA Bulldog Football Players Graduate since December 2005.

UGA Bulldogs won 8 or more games 13 years in a row to lead the nation. Texas and Virginia Tech are tied for second place with 12 years of 8 plus wins a season. Both play in crappy butt conferences.

26-13-3 UGA Bulldogs in Bowl Games

26 Bowl Wins is 4th place behind Alabama 32, Southern Cal 32 & Penn State 27.

38-4 non-conference Coach Richt Era.

90-27 overall Coach Richt Era 9 years.

RUSS ends his career UNDEFEATED 2-0 including beating GA tek.

Kirby Smart is not coming t o Georgia and I for one am glad! I think he will make a good head coach one day and he is a smart guy who knows his golden egg is with Bama and Nick Saban. This has to be an NFL guy! I hope the Dallas coach is the guy! Pro coaches are very good at coaching defensive schemes and fundamentals. They also have draw to top recruits because they can always sell their brand of getting the player ready for the pros. If not the Dallas guy, just get the young hottest prospect from a college program. I dont knwo about you guys but this is getting old. Hire someone already. Lets not forget that the Georgia DC job may be viewed as the 3 or 4 DC job out ther with Florida, Fl State, possibly TTech jobs open so dont go crazy when we get a unheard name. Its possible!

On the injury thing, the fact that it was talked about alot does not make it not matter. Other teams had injuries? Yea, as well a whole bunch of other factor that come into play. And that why teams don’t win more game than they do. Once again, name a team in the history of the world (or a DC for that matter) that has even won that many game with that many injuries. Either you believe that injuries play a part in the production of a team, or you do not. If you do, then massive injuries certainly would , and have to be taken into consideration before you fire half your staff in a 10 win season. The truth is used, and overused sometimes. The housing bubble has been talked about ad-naseum, but the fact remains it IS a huge part of this recession. And other decades have had slumps to, but never to that degree. Its not an excuse, its a reality.

It’s easy to debate mow that WM should have been fired and 2 other coaches last year. I still give you way more credit, that if you were running the UGA football program, you would not have done that.

By way 05,06,07 the defense was extrememly consistant. Maybe they werent as good as wanted/needed/whatever but they were almost exactly the same through those years, and stats extrmemely close to what they were the 4 yrs before. To say they were plumeting is simply inaccurate and emotional , not factual. Nobody was calling for anyone to be be fired in 07. That leaves 08. Richt made a judgement based on the situation.

By this line of reasoning Evans has waited MUCH to long to fire Mark Richt, because we did have some issue this past season that seems to have been building for a couple of years, (way beyond who the name of the DC is) .He is making a decision to see if Richt can work out of it. If he can’t, then folks are going to say it he waited MUCH too late to do something.

Nesbitt and McCoy got the same treatment

January 8th, 2010
8:27 am

Tech’s QB Nesbitt and the TX QB got a does of SEC reality. BOTH got pounded early on in their respective clashes with the SEC teams and ended up sitting. The SEC is so stout and the other conferences are a joke ……….top to bottom. That tech wishbone would be a joke in the SEC.

By the way, when do UGA and tech play B ball again???

Iowa is like a mid tier SEC school ( UGA, Ole Miss, UT and KY and Arkansas,SC ) and the others, Bama and Florida would slaughter Tech. The ACC is lower than a snake’s belly and in a wagon rut.

Roll Tide and SEC RULES NCAA BABY !!! How many NC now??? Hmmm??

Rod & AltamahaDog:
Rod: Playcalling problems? Really? You do realize that there are 60 plays called on offense and not one coach or coordinator has ever called a perfect game. But you should also know this: No matter what the play that’s called, it about execution. Blaming the call is a layman’s excuse when he doesn’t know what went wrong. On offense, if all 11 men do exactly what they are supposed to do, every play will go for 99 yds. Obviously that rarely ever happens. UGA averaged 3.1 more points per game this year with Joe Cox at the helm than we did the entire time we had David Greene. We avg more yards and points over the 4 year period since Bobo became OC than we did while Mark was the OC. The offense is fine. It could always be better and will when we have a better defense. A team takes on the identity of its defense. If the D is mean, aggressive and attacking, so will the offense be. Can’t hurt to get a turnover and a short field once in a while either.

Altamaha: Our defense was not consistent in 05, 06 & 07. In ‘05 we lost 3 games, gave up 30 points just once (using BVG leftover players). In 06 we lost 4 games surrendering 30 points per game in the 4 losses (15+ pts more than BVG defenses avgd). In 07 we lost 2, but we won 3 shoot-outs while our D gave up 30+ again one of which being Troy… Troy! To watch us game by game since ‘05 only an apologist would say we didn’t experience a gradual decline in defensive output. And you’re right about the injury bug in ‘08 costing us perhaps a run but keep in mind, the vast majority of those injuries were on offense.

I think CWM was a good coach who knew what he was doing. But for some reason something was a miss. The team didn’t play hard for him. Look at the intensity they played with in the Liberty Bowl when none of us even wanted to be there. They played fast and wreckless. Something we haven’t seen much under CWM.

And now its up to CMR to find us another BVG who will get that kind of effort out of our D every day. UGA hasn’t fallen off the map, we are not contrary to popular Tech fan opinion a program in decline. We had a couple bad seasons and a good boss tried to allow a coach to coach his way out of it. It didn’t work and he moved on. Don’t get your hearts set on Kirby, or Grantham… it could be Manny Diaz. As long as he gets the superb talent that we’ve recruited to play up to their potential we’ll be back in Atlanta in no time.

Give Mark a little more credit and trust. As a longtime Bulldog I still get embarrassed at how we treated Dooley more than once and now we want bronze statues of him at the gates. Stop being so fickle and…………………..

Richt is doing exactly what he needs to do. He is making Kirby’s hires for him since he can’t do that while he is the coach at Alabama. Garner is going to leave when Kirby comes to town, so Kirby has told CMR who he wants to coach the D line and that is Grantham. When Kirby is gone in two years to be a Head Coach, Grantham takes over. Watch and see!

The reason the Gators keep beating the dawgs, is Meyer is always one to two steps ahead of the truck salesman. Meet the new Defensive Coordinator for the Gators:

The Miami Dolphins confirmed Thursday night that inside linebackers coach George Edwards is leaving to take the defensive coordinator’s position at Florida.

Edwards, an assistant at UF under Steve Spurrier in 1991, is the most tenured member of the Dolphins’ coaching staff, just completing his fifth season with the team. He has 11 years of NFL coaching experience, including one as a defensive coordinator.

Edwards, 43, has previous NFL coaching stints with Cleveland, Washington and Dallas. He was the defensive coordinator for the Redskins under Spurrier in 2003.

Before going to the NFL, Edwards, a former defensive standout at Duke, was an assistant at four schools – UF (1991), Appalachian State (1992-95), Duke (1996) and Georgia (1997).

The move is surely bittersweet for inside linebacker Channing Crowder, a former UF standout who has been groomed under Edwards during his entire NFL career.

Crowder has called Edwards “the best assistant in the NFL, period,” and considers him to be a father figure of sorts. Now, Edwards is leaving to help Crowder’s alma mater.

The hiring of Edwards will complete Urban Meyer’s coaching staff.

Hal, I just meant actual stats those years, not really considering that new non-stat “over-30 point but still won”. The fact of the matter is that we WERE consistant in the ways that guage a defense (uber-subjective fast and wreckless standard aside) those threee years and very similar where we were the 3 before. Yards, ints, sacks, pass broken up, 3rd down %, SEC, national rankings. As far as scoring, WM’s teams gave up something like 1-4 ppg more than BVG’s did untill 2008. Furthermore, the rise in points allowed by UGA over those years was LESS than the rise in points allowed in the SEC as a whole over that time frame. So yes, they were consistant.

2008 was not, but impossible to guage because of so many factors,(and certainly not fire half your staff than had been part of “one of the best team in the country” just a few month before. Tried to recover in 2009, (which was tremendously complicated by a rash of issue non-realted to the D), coulnd’t and here we are. I think he did what he needed and our Defense hopefully will improve, BUT my point was, that CMR timing was correct. Looking back and subjectively saying the writing was on the wall is a far cry from changing the realities of the timing.

I have no idea what apologist even means. What would I apologize for? I didn’t run the show. I’m not making up stuff to prove anything. I don’t have an agenda to justify. But I understand the paranoia around here that somebody might say something that doesnt blame WM for everything wrong with UGA football right now. Although, that would be great.

I take it you think there is nothing wrong with the offensive staff that can’t be solely blamed on the players, but if things don;t go well next year, everyone is going to be blessed with the same hindsight about them, I am sure.

BTW. 2008 injuries being mostly on the offense is not remotely true. Certainly not in the players that were very much figured to be in that pre-season expectations. By Mid-season we didnt even have enough healthy LB to practise. WE were using reserve DT (not starters because down 2 of those) to stand in for DE when we we ran out of those, just so that they could even walk-through a game plan.

We had a lot of O-line injuries, but frankly that was one young guy replacing the other young guy. I don’t anyone who thought Our O-line was going to be a strength going into the season. But everyone thought we were returning a good core of D players, and most of them were hurt at times.

Richt will make a great hire. Despite all the talk the true Bulldog Nation stands behind Richt and has faith in him and the choice he will make for the team. I think both Kirby and Grantham are great candidates but I doubt that it is Kirby for one reason. Why would we make an offer to Chavis (who was only shopping for money and used the talk with UGA to squeeze LSU for more cash) if we were truly waiting on the opportunity (after the national title game) to hire Kirby?
I would be thrilled if Kirby came back to the Bulldog Nation. But if I had to put odds on it, I would say that we have a deal in place with Grantham that will probably be annouced after this weekend.
In either case, it will be a vast improvement for UGA as we get someone with the ability to be a true Defensive Coordinator.
