(UPDATE: As expected, Reshad Jones formally announced this afternoon that he is leaving UGA early for the NFL draft. Click here for the full story from his press conference.)
Georgia junior safety Reshad Jones, who was on the verge of entering the NFL draft a year ago, will do so this time and forgo his senior season at UGA, he confirmed late Monday night.
Although he changed his mind on the draft decision a couple of times last year, he indicated he is firm in his choice this time.
“I know I’m ready,” he said.
He said he made the decision after consulting with his family.
Jones will formally announce his decision to enter the draft at a news conference in Athens this afternoon. UGA says to expect no word today from junior linebacker Rennie Curran, who is deciding whether to join Jones in the draft.
The NFL deadline for eligible underclassmen to enter the draft is Jan. 15, but Curran has indicated he might prefer to make an announcement before spring-semester classes begin at UGA. That is Thursday.
Factors believed to be steering Curran toward the draft are financial (he has a 1-year-old daughter) and the fact that the biggest knock against his NFL potential (his height) won’t change with another year of college.
Jones, from Atlanta, started all 13 games for Georgia this season, making 73 tackles and intercepting a team-high four passes. The highlight of his season was a superb performance in a 30-24 victory over Georgia Tech.
After drawing much criticism for his play against the Yellow Jackets in 2008, he made amends in 2009. His dazzling one-handed interception of a Tech pass at Georgia’s 43-yard line in the second quarter set up a UGA touchdown drive.
“This game was real personal for me,” Jones said afterward. “I wanted redemption. . . . This is as sweet as it gets.”
In Georgia’s Independence Bowl victory over Texas A&M, Jones had a 59-yard interception return to the Aggies 28-yard line late in the third quarter, leading to a touchdown. It was the 11th and final interception of Jones’ UGA career.

Darn! I guess we all saw this coming. Reshad Jones had potential for a major Senior year…but I know he is more than NFL ready. He has a lot of good tape to go with his freakish athleticism. I hope he can get drafted high and make an immediate impact like Stafford, Moreno and Massaquoi did.

I had the good fortune to meet Reshad this past w/end at Eric Berry’s 21st bday party. Super engaging and humble young man and I wish him all the best in the NFL. He told me he was announcing his decision to turn pro today and he’s obviously a man of his word. His tape is his resume and I won’t be surprised if he blows up and the combine and sneaks in the first two rounds. He modestly told me they graded him out as a three but I think he will improve his stock at the combine. Reshad will look real nice in a Texans uniform! Congrats Reshad and GO DAWGS!!!

Reshad, thanks for the memories. Wish you well in the NFL. Glad we’ve got some good young talent coming to take his place. In a dismal year, Reshad was one bright spot. 78 tackles and 4 interceptions … 82 major plays. Hope someone steps into his shoes and takes his place. Wish the junior jump rule wasn’t there. Great players are down to two years of playing and then they jump. I think it should be the senior year…not the junior year. Best to you Reshad.

So what if he missed a tackle here and there(not his fault he had a sorry position coach), I didn’t you out there tackling people either! I wish the young man good luck and I hope he has an outstanding NFL career. The higher he goes the better. It will help recruiting tremendously if we keep putting guys in the first and second rounds of the NFL draft. So quit hating on these guys and support them! I feel bad for Reshad. He was as physically gifted as any safety we have ever had at UGA, but he was the victim of Willie Martinez’s inability to coach both DB’s and be the DC.
Will Jones be able to mentally handle the rigors of the NFL? We will see. No doubt, he improved dramatically this year, and I hope he can continue that in the NFL.
Good luck!

really- WM’s ability as a DB coach is unquestionable, its when he got in over his head as our DC that the secondary play, especially tackling and coverage dropped off significantly. and if you’re secondary can’t tackle or cover CONSISTANTLY, your D sucks. just as ours has over the last 2 years.

Did you read what I said. Willie Martinez was a GREAT DB coach, no question about it.
However the greatest indictment of his tenure over the last couple of years is that the DB’s were clearly no longer getting the level of coaching that they had gotten from 2001-2006.
The same coach who got guys like Bruce Thornton and Tra Battle to improve immensely was now squandering NFL talent like Asher Allen and Reshad.
Willie was once a great DB coach, and likely will be again, but DB coach is the point that the Peter Princicple kicks in for him. He obviously does not have the requisite organizational skills to handle both DB and DC duties and perform them at an elite level.

I don’t really get it, but whatever. I mean he is leaving for what??? Early 3rd round money. I understand he doesn’t know who his coach will be, and he knows it probably won’t make a difference, at least for his senior season anyway. I just think he has a huge chance to boost his stock next year. Curran, on the other hand, is ready. If he were about 3″ taller he would be a top 10 pick. Zach Thomas proved that height doesn’t always matter. I think Curran will make it big, IF they give him a chance at the next level. With the talent at linebacker in the NFL right now, he is going to have to fight just to get reps in practice.

Seems to me that if the focus was to win championships and you don’t why leave early then? Everyone knows its all about the money in these decisions and certainly the fear of injury is always in the background, but can’t we just decide that unless the teams’ goals have been met, personal interests should be put on the back burner. I certainly understand the logic in Matthew Stafford’s decision, but we all knew he was done and when asked about not meeting the teams goals his reply was basically it was no big deal. That is precisely why we are underachieving as a team.

Guys, Reshad is looking at most a 200,000 – 350,000 a year contract. He has had a hard time tackling at the college level and most NFL scouts know that. He also lacks that hard hitting of a NFL safety. Gets burned on deep balls alot but he is pretty good and stuffing the run.

I do not want to be a downer but when I look at former DBs from UGA I see the likes of Thomas Davis, Greg Blue, Champ Bailey and Jermaine Phillips. These guys were outstanding performers at UGA. I am talking about game-in and game-out having the types of performances which were game changers. When I look at Reshad Jones I see someone with a great deal of ability getting burned and not making tackles. While I wish him the best at the next level I just do not see his loss as a negative at UGA.

UGA realist, must read
January 5th, 2010
9:48 am
Alright, let’s face it. A lot of the top talent UGA has is due to success the program had over the last 2-5 years. If Mark Richt can’t get this team back to near national prominence then I see the UGA ship sinking fast. Where are the national commits that UGA use to enjoy. Well, with Bama and Florida on the national stage, UGA is an after thought.
It is the truth, as a faithful UGA fan, the truth is I don’t know if Mark Richt is an iconic coach. He is a good coach, but not the coach that will compete for SEC and National titles year in and out. Atleast not with the level of talent that is coaching teams around him. Rival coaches out coach, recruit and lead their staff and players to a championship mentality, from practice, late night meetings, the film room and winning on Saturday. Richt is to much like Bobby Bowden in his later years. to nice of a guy with no killer mentality.
I am afraid UGA fan’s will grow even more frustrated in the next 2-4 years when the dogs are not in contention for the SEC and more. Why, Florida & Bama has the reign’s and UGA is no where in the picture. UGA is in contention only if Saban and Meyer leave, what does that tell you about UGA’s leader? By the way, if Florida and Alabama now have the supperior players according to recruiting, then Mark Richt has to beat them with less talented players? UGA is digging itself deeper and deeper into a hole from a recruting aspect. Richt has always had a hard team beating teams that have the same level talent or less. Richt has never blown out teams the way Alabama and Florida has.
Yes folks, I do compare UGA to those programs, because their is no excuse why UGA shouldn’t not be on their level. It will not happen with Richt. It doesn’t take iconic coaches 8-10 years to compete for a national championship, which UGA has never done under Richt. So what makes you think he will do that in the next 8-10 years. We are currently log jammed with with USC (Carolina), Tennesse and the Auburn’s, if we are lucky.
I am not excited the least bit about UGA anytime soon. It would take a miracle for UGA to compete with the Alabama’s and Florida’s of the SEC.
Mark my word, Richt will not get it done. A new DC will come in. UGA will win most games except, Florida, Tennesse etc. UGA may get to a 9-10 win season, but will not get over the hump. Eventually the boosters and fan base will have enough. Then it will be tough to find an iconic coach to come in and turn UGA into a Florida/Alabama program. Tough to find a Nick Saban/Urban Meyer. Maybe TCU coach, we need someone innovative who can truly lead.
Wishful thinking. I am sure the dawg hatters in our blogasphere want UGA to stay complacent with Richt, because they know what we have. A mild mannered nice guy who win’s against average opponent’s. Very predictable, he will only beat you if you are having a down year.
When will change come?

UGA realist: Where is your head? You are now telling us that we no longer get the national recruits? In case you are not aware the #2 and the #7 National QB prospects were red shirted this year at UGA. Why? Because you cannot learn an elaborate offensive scheme in three weeks in the spring and three weeks in the summer. Please, don’t get your panties in a wad and start panicking. Remember, two years ago UGA finished #2 in the nation. In ‘08, the year with all the expectations there were 21 roster players lost to season ending injuries and the still won 10 games. All you Richt haters who want to see him go away need a dose of reality, but just not from this guy.

I wish them both well. I hate to see Rennie go but agree another year will not raise his stock. Jones has lost his mind if he thinks he can work himself into the first round. He cannot cover or tackle…make ocassional big hits…catch an occassional INT that is thrown right to him…make no more than 2 athletic INT’s his whole career yes. Jones has terrible instincts and plays out of position way too much…I wish him well and glad he is gone…we will be better at safety with Rambo/Ogletree etc…

The last time I looked UGA was ranked #4 in national recruiting. In my book that is top tier. While cognizant of the fact that there are SEC school ranked higher, well, that might be the case when you are in the premier football conference in America. No one said it was going to be easy. You could be in the ACC. But that would be unconscionable.

As for reshad jones, although I think he could’ve greatly improved his stock with another year, I wishhim the best of luck in the NFL. I think he wanted to leave uga, and no offense intended, but I don’t want a person playing who doesn’t want to be there. I think curran is in a different situation. I think he wants to stay, but financially he needs to leave.
UGA realist, I strongly disagree. While this year was definitely a down year, I don’t think it is a sign of things to come. UGA is still bringing in the talent, just look at aaron murray. He’s from florida and was the number 3 qb last year rated by scout.com. I guess you can say he isn’t from farther away like stafford was from texas, but if the number 3 rated qb happens to be from one state away I don’t think it makes a difference. Remember that in one of UGA’s worst teams in a while they still beat Gtech, a team that was having their best year in a while.
Finally, I think there is one thing that alot of fans don’t think about. Offenses and Defenses are totally different monsters. As a defense you want to be on the field as little as possible, as an offense you want to be on the field as much as possible. As an offense you need time to get in a rhythm and when the defense is playing “bend but don’t break” they are spending alot of time on the field. I think that is one reason that the offense has struggled so much. I don’t want to put all the team’s problems on the defense, but I think that is something that is overlooked. I don’t always agree with bobo’s playcalling, but I’m not as angered by him as some people are.

The problem with most UGA fans is that we tend to believe we are better than we really are. we are a perennial top 10-15 program. that’s pretty good but not where most of us think we should be.
we certainly have not reached our potential but hopefully we will.
it would have been nice if we could closed the deal against Florida in 2002 and South Carolina in 2007. if we did, we would have played for the national title both years. may not have won either but would have been to the big game.

JoeB nailed it.
Willie was great at coaching our DB’s, but when he became DC they went downhill in a hurry. Either he needed to own both roles, or hire a better DB coach. Please don’t tell me he couldn’t own both roles and do it well, as BVG was both DC and LB coach and they dominated under him.
We need better DB play, but our biggest problem is below average LB play(far below average for UGA standards) since BVG left. LB’s solidify your entire team, and our LB play the last couple of years is as bad as you will see in the SEC. Sure, Curran makes a ton of Brooking’ess tackles 5-6 yards downfield, but our LB’s can’t cover the pass or stop the run. Ellerbe was a big hitter, and probably the best LB we have had since BVG. If not for tremendous interior line play teams would have run wild against us. Maybe it’s recruiting, but in my 30 years of watching the Dawgs, I have never seen weaker LB play and it has affected our entire defense.
Best of luck Reshad. It seemed like you were just starting to come into your own, and having to cover up for terrible LB’s the last two years probably slowed you down. Get better at tackling or you won’t be a major player in the NFL.

collegeballfan, if you think fans might not know about play calling you are an idiot.
It doesn’t take someone who has coached, or even played beyond high school to know anything about play calling. While many people might not know how the difference pieces of a team work in different ways on certain plays, they can still understand some basic fundamentals of the game. More importantly, a gameplan is what most fans refer to when they speak of calling the plays, not about individual play calling.
That being said, I and many others were obviously correct this year. When Georgia finally committed to running the ball like so many of us thought we should have done, Georgia started winning games it was supposed to (Auburn, GT, TAMU). Prior to that stretch, the only identity our offense had was that other teams knew if they blew up one or two runs that we would abandon the running game for the rest of that half. No one feared our running attack for the first 9 games because we only ran off-tackle and miss-timing runs. We didn’t just line up and force someone to stop the dive play. When we finally did, we found out teams couldn’t stop it, and we controlled the ball and most importantly the clock much better. This kept our defense off the field, which was the best play call we could make. Our offense was as much or more at fault as our defense because we didn’t eat the clock.
Georgia was dead last in rushing attempts as a perecentage of offensive plays in the SEC until the Georgia game, and for some reason the light finally switched on. Maybe it was all the fans complaining for the entire year, or maybe Bobo finally saw the light that you can’t run a play-action pro-style offense unless the other teams respect the run. So apparently, despite fans not knowing anything about play calling, or rather game calling, when Bobo started doing what the fans wanted we started to dominate.
I guess the fans know more than you think.

To all you coaches out there in blog land, before you start penciling in Ogletree as the replacement for Jones at Safety you might want to know that he might not even play safety for the DAWGS. Instead he may be moved to linebacker. Stick to being a fan and let the REAL coaches handle the positions, X’s, an O’s.

Jones wish you luck but I have to say personally think it is a mistake.
You need major work on your tackling, technique, and your positioning. To many times you showed poor tackling skills and seemed to be lost on the field.NFL looks for complete players, they dont want to teach fundamentals.More to it than hitting someone hard.In the NFL a shoulder un tackle will get you cut quick.
I predict a late round pick. Not hating here, just stating it as I see it.Hope you prove me wrong.

As a Dawg fan for over 40 years, I have never seen as poor a display of “tackling/bumping/O-laying” as Jones exhibited in the GT game in 08. Then he starts off the season at OKST with an illegal hit on a defenseless receiver that cost us a TD. Glad to see him go. He will wow some NFL scout with his athletic ability and make some money, which is good for him and I wish him well.
I hope UGA goes back to recruiting football players from football schools, not athletes from non-football schools. I think Ogletree will make us all forget about Jones.

To the dummy that said he will *only* make 200K-350K a season, the Packers have the lowest average salary at $440,000. Let’s say he’s 4rd material. He could be close to that. The kids maybe 22, let’s say he sticks around 3 NFL years. That’s over $1 million dollars before he’s 25. Did YOU have that kind of money at 25? Most people won’t see that money over a lifetime, nevermind at 25.

Don’t blame Reshad for leaving …. he is almost ready for the next level but still needs work on coverage skills and tackling. However, he would have to learn a system under a new DC and there are two very talented safeties coming in the current recruiting class. One of them will be ready (Jakar Hamilton) as he is a Jr. college transfer but Alec Ogletree will be straight out of highschool and if Reshad had stayed Ogletree probably would have been a backup. Good luck to Reshad.

Reshad will likely be a 3rd rounder – if he waits til next year I see him as a 2nd rounder which is a big difference in pay normally but the owners are thretening to change the pay structure for rookies in the NFL after this class so I don’t blame him for leaving even though he could use another year in college and UGA needs him.

I for one was wanting him to leave last year. I agree with the folks that said he cant cover or tackle. In the NFL you dont get as many chances to f up like he did at UGA. In his defense he had a much better 09 than 08 season. but i dont think he will last long unless he overcomes his flaws.

No one should be losing any sleep over this. Rashad never really made that big of a difference on a weak defense for the past two years! Rennie Curran even had a down year this year. We need new blood and I think that Bacari Rambo, who should have been playing more anyway is going to be a much better player than Rashad ever was here. Sanders Cummings, Branden Smith, Boykins, Ogeltree, Jakar Hamilton and maybe even Logan Gray are the future of our secondary.

I think if you compare the senior season that Jones could have, you are absolutely right that the gap will be large. The problem is you can’t compare what could have been. Jones simply didn’t live up to his 5 star billing for most of his career. It wasn’t until the second half of this season that I really started to see the talent show itself. Jones struggled consistently with reading coverages and making plays. How many interceptions has the guy dropped in his career???
He certainly can lay the hammer down on someone, and he has a ton of talent, but he was simply way to inconsistent at the rover/safety position. He did play really well at the end of this season, and I wish the best to him.

No loss here. How can you be called a leader when you don’t wrap up and you get penalized more than anyone on the team? Just because he caught a lazy pop fly served up by the Tex A&M QB (that anybody on this board could have caught), does not mean that he has morphed into a good player. gtfan, the days of long rebuilding phases are over. if UGA gets the right guy to head up the defense, we’ll be fine next year. The offense will be fine with Murray throwing to AJ Green, Marlon Brown, Rontavious Wooten, among others (including Logan Gray who will switch to receiver after losing starting QB job to Murray). The offense will be much better with a QB that’s doesn’t resemble a deer in the headlights in control so long as the defense doesn’t put them in catch up situations.

Why do I need to applaud someone who is going to a mandatory Summer workout which is part of the agreement he signed to get a free education? I do not think he is the type of person that a championship team can be built around. Therefore, I say good riddance as I would like for my team to be a championship team. I also believe that he will get drafted (and paid) because of his physical prowess, but will flame out due to his habits. I am glad that he performed well against GT and TAMU, but simply think that we can do much better.

Clearly, UGA’s new basketball coach Mark Fox, who does NOT have a LOSING RECORD to GA teak as GA tek’s coach Paul Hewitt always has bad against UGA Bulldogs both on the court and in the classroom. Our players are NOT thugs. This team still has a pretty high ceiling,” Paul Hewitt said. That is a POOR SPORT. He should congratulate UGA on a not so surprising victory at all. Paul Hewitt is now 4-6 vs. UGA. Paul Hewitt is a bad coach and would have been fired years ago at UGA. At GA tek, they try to cover up his NCAA PROBATION and NCAA limiting him to just 11 Scholarships.
56-50 Women’s Basketball UGA Lady Bulldogs also have a far higher Academic Progress Rate than the GA tek women’s basketball team. Also, UGA Lady Bulldogs have NEVER lost to GA tek in Athens in women’s basketball. The GA tek coach, after last year refusing to shake Andy Landers’ hand after he beat the crap out of her team, this year did. It resonated throughout the college sports what a horrible POOR SPORT MaChelle Joseph is as GA tek’s women’s basketball coach. The score this year was 56-50. The better coach ? Without any doubt Coach Andy Landers.
30-24 Forcing Paul Johnson to scrap his high school offense, GA tek Heisman hopeful Josh Nesbitt threw 4 incomplete passes as wounded ducks to end the game. It was a devastating loss, leaving Paul Johnson to tell the GA tek fans (both of them) to hit UGA fans in the face. This is a POOR SPORT. This, while, Coach Richt beat GA tek for the 8th time in 9 years of 90-27 football including 2 BCS Bowl Championship Game WINS. GA tek has not won a Major Bowl Game since 1955, a span now in excess of 55 years. It also marked the 60th defeat of GA tek football and coupled with their bowl loss to bring Paul Johnson to 0-2 in bowl games, while Coach Richt is 7-2, it is a bitter pill to swallow for a football team at GA tek under Paul Johnson who has a far worse Academic Progress Rate APR than Coach Richt’s football team’s APR. The better coach ? By far Coach Richt.
It has been a BAD YEAR for GA Tek. A complete clean sweep. In all major sports UGA has far exceeded the Academic Progress Rate of GA tek. And, oh yeah, while we are on the topic, we have BEAT GA tek for this year :
73-66 men’s basketball UGA wins over GA tek.
56-50 women’s basketball UGA wins over GA tek
30-24 football UGA wins over GA tek.
A day to go down in Infamy for GA tek. It could not have happened to a worse group of losers, thugs, college drop-outs and POOR SPORTS. Congratulations GA tek, a clean sweep, in every possible fashion.

Best of luck in the NFL. But, you will be learning a new defensive scheme next year. For the chance to move up to a first rounder, you may want to curb the talk about the difficulty to learn a new defensive scheme next year.

I was probably Rashad Jones biggest fan. I kept waiting for him to be the kind of “hitter” I expected him to be – the next Greg Blue or Thomas Davis. Alas, I never thought he reached the potential or the expectations I had for him. But, I do believe he gave us enough time, and wish him well in the NFL.
Best Wishes

Wow, did GA Tech get dominated physically by Iowa or what? If Tech plays outside of the ACC, they have been physically dominated in every aspect of the game. That offense is no longer a mystery, that defense is terrible and the kicking game is second rate at best.
Ha, Ha, it seems that CPJ did not invent football afterall!

“That being said, I and many others were obviously correct this year.”
“We didn’t just line up and force someone to stop the dive play. When we finally did, we found out teams couldn’t stop it, and we controlled the ball and most importantly the clock much better. ”
“Georgia was dead last in rushing attempts as a perecentage of offensive plays in the SEC until the Georgia (Tech?) game, and for some reason the light finally switched on”
“when Bobo started doing what the fans wanted we started to dominate.”

First, when coaches start listening to what the fans want, we’re in for a world of trouble. Fans live with perception, not reality. Let’s all admit that Richt, Bobo, and Martinez have forgotten more about football than the rest of us know.
Second, running the ball against tech is a world different from running the football against Florida, LSU, and South Carolina. . .or Tenn for that matter. Losing your best offensive lineman in the first series of the year doesn’t help, and we tried desperately to hide one person on our offensive line ALL YEAR. I don’t think there is anyone out there that wouldn’t like to just line up and run it over and over and over and win. But we COULD NOT do that during most of the season.
To say we should of done all season what we did against tech is saying the SEC is on par with the ACC. And i’m not bashing tech/acc when i say that just isn’t the case.

And R Jones, good luck in the NFL.
I, and i’m sure many Dawg fans will agree, appreciate your game against tech. . . that was a good one.

I’d be REAL surprise if Curran leaves UGA. Curran is a LOYAL dude. He loves Richt and UGA, and UGA loves him. He’s a VERY special guy. He really wants to be that guy that helps Richt get his 1st official Natl Champ. Curran’s family is fine for now. Curran can improve with more int’s, sacks, and tfl’s. Much more $$$ if he waits one more year. Richt ALWAYS follows a tough year with a great 11 or 13 win season. With a new DC, Curran could really have an All-American type season.

Jones was the most overated dog. He has no chance in the NFL. His leaving opens spots for new recruits. Curran needs to stay, I wish we had 10 Currans. How about hiring Pollack as some kind of defensive coach.

Miller & Jones were below average defenders. Martinez sucked, but these two didn’t help. UGA’s zone defense was clueless. Defense should be better without the 3 slackateers. We need more Renne Curran character players. Forget 5-star ratings, go for character.

To you people saying that UGA needs a new head coach: grow up. While it’s true that Mark Richt hasn’t taken us to the promised land yet, let’s remember that this guy has the best winning percentage of any coach in UGA history, including Vince Dooley. Let’s also remember that it took various other legendary coaches, including Dooley, Tom Osborne and Bobby Bowden, longer than a decade before they earned their first title.
Richt won the SEC in two of his first five seasons, and finished ranked #2 in the nation in 2007. If you were to hop in a Delorian, go back to the 1990’s and talk to Dawg fans then, these type of accomplishments would have been grounds for sainthood in Dawg Nation.
I still have faith that Richt will win a national title at UGA. So he hasn’t been as successful as Urban Meyer or Nick Saban in the last couple of years…is that really a reason to fire somebody? Anybody who thinks we should fire Mark Richt is a moron.
