LSU says Chavis gets raise, will stay

UPDATED 4 P.M.

Georgia’s football program still doesn’t have a defensive coordinator, but the opening continues to prove lucrative for coaches pursued for the job.

LSU said Thursday that its highly regarded defensive coordinator, John Chavis, received a pay raise and agreed to stay in his current job after being offered the Georgia position.

Georgia’s chase of Chavis played out similarly to its earlier pursuit of veteran Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster, who said he turned down a UGA offer after the Hokies considerably sweetened his contract.

Chavis’ decision could prolong an already month-long Georgia search for a successor to the fired Willie Martinez. UGA coach Mark Richt said for the first time Thursday that the search could extend beyond the first week of the new year.

“I don’t know if it will or not, but it could,” said Richt, who previously had said he hoped to have a new coordinator hired by  the end of the first week of January.

Richt declined to discuss Chavis or any other candidate Thursday, saying: “I’m not going to make any comment on these things until we’ve got our man.” But he did say that Rodney Garner, the only holdover on Georgia’s defensive coaching staff, isn’t under consideration for the coordinator position.

“No, Rodney is not a candidate for the job, and he knows that,” Richt said. “We’re just still in the search.”

LSU athletics director Joe Alleva, in Orlando for the Tigers’ Capital One Bowl game against Penn State on Friday, told Gannett Louisiana Newspapers that Chavis was offered a raise Wednesday night to turn down a Georgia offer in the neighborhood of $600,000 per year over three years.

“We did what we needed to do to keep him,” Alleva said.

“I’m staying at LSU, and I’m excited about remaining here,” Chavis said in a statement. “LSU is a great place.”

Chavis was not available for further comment.

Georgia has been aiming high for a veteran defensive coordinator. Foster has been Virginia Tech’s defensive coordinator for 15 years, and Chavis also has held the position in the SEC for 15 years, 14 at Tennessee and one at LSU.

Foster reportedly made $402,000 and Chavis $450,000, plus bonuses, in 2009. To keep Foster, Virginia Tech added an annuity to his contract that will pay him a lump sum, reportedly as much as $1 million, if he remains at the school another five years. And to keep Chavis, LSU gave him a raise competitive with what Georgia was offering, Alleva told Gannett.

A third coach, Vic Koenning, acknowledged talking to Georgia about its defensive-coordinator position before leaving Kansas State to accept the DC job at Illinois. Koenning apparently was not offered the Georgia position.

Other coaches believed to be on Richt’s radar include Dallas Cowboys defensive-line coach Todd Grantham, a former Virginia Tech assistant, and Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, a former Georgia player who has given no indication that he would leave the Crimson Tide for a coordinator’s job. But there are many other names also circulating in an overactive rumor mill.

“I’m not taking any pleasure at all in what people might be going through out there,” said Richt, referring to fans craving an answer. “All I can say is … when I do have that decision made and it’s ready for public consumption, we’ll let everybody know. My goal is to get the right man for the job.”

Richt had hoped to make a hire by next week because that’s when coaches return to the road visiting recruits. But he raised the possibility Thursday for the first time that the new hire might not be in place before a second recruiting “dead” — non-contact — period  is observed for the national coaches’ convention. That “dead” period runs from Jan. 10 through Jan. 14.

“It may not be until after the second  ‘dead’ period  that we get our new coach and coaches out into the homes,” Richt said. “There will be plenty of times to get into those homes [before national signing day]. I’m just hoping that these young men will continue to be patient and know that my goal is to make a decision that will really affect them throughout their time at Georgia, so I want to make sure that we do the very best job in that regard.”

Richt fired Martinez and two other defensive coaches Dec. 2. He has said the new coordinator will have considerable input into filling the other two positions.

Sorry “OLE” yeller. Wasn’t trying to insult you it was a honest mistake. Calm down. I hope you didn’t forget to take you’re meds this morning. Be careful who you threaten to whip because I have thrown some knuckles myself. I will damn sure take my swing.

On another topic, why would Muschamp continue to be the coach in wating at UT? Mack Brown just got a contract extension thru the year 2016. Does anyone really think Muschamp is going to sit and wait that long? This whole coach in waiting scenario is getting kind of silly. I understand if a coach is only going to stay another season or two .But what if Mack Brown decides to coach beyond 2016? After all the guy is only 58 years old and he will only be 64 when his contract expires. Is Texas going to force him to leave if UT is still a top program? Muschamp is one of the top young coordinators in the country and some BCS program will come calling very soon. Does anyone really expect Muschamp to say no I’m going to stick with UT and be the coach in waiting for another decade? That just ain’t gonna happen.

You been rippin our coach…but assistant coaches know going to Athens is a dead end job. What assistant coaches that have ever worked for Richt have become head coaches of Division 1 schools?….NONE! Several assitants for Meyer have gone on to HC positions elsewhere…UNLV, Utah, Brigham Young, Miss. State, Marshall, and Louisville. That is why people want to work for Meyer and not Richt. VanGorder, the best he could do was get the HC job at Georgia Southern after coaching at Georgia. When given the opportunity, he got out of Athens real fast. What does that tell you, Georgia fans?

Couple of things I saw made me wonder…. If Richt already says it will be after Jan 1st until he announces then why are all these DCs being mentioned as offered from UGA? Sounds like their agents are out there getting more money. I bet Richt is laughing his *** off at all of these schools announcing raises to coaches he never even offered. I’m glad we didn’t get Bud Foster, he’s not real smart. He could have gotten a $200K+ raise, which is more than $1M over 5 years, especially with interest. Or maybe he’s just loyal. I wonder which coach is going to get his agent to announce he’s been contacted by Richt next? Not many left in the SEC.

CJ dawg, I totally agree. Some college football fans are so childish and immature. I’m a die hard dawg fan and the stupid jokes about the state of TENN actually offend me. I lived in the state for 5 years and found it to be one of the most beautiful places in the entire south. I lived in Nashville and traveled to knoxville quite frequently as a sales rep. There are some great southern people in the state of TENN. I was born and raised in the state of Georgia and guess what? There are just as many stupid rednecks down here as there are up there. I know. Shocking right? I have been to several UGA games in knoxville and tailgated with TENN fans and they treated me with the utmost hospitality. I have family members who are Tech fans but it doesn’t mean I hate them and call them childish names. I must me a different kind of fan because I don’t get all the childish name calling and misguided anger. Not all of my friends are UGA fans but I don’t treat them like $hit. Really, I don’t get it. I mean I want to kick the $hit out of TENN and Tech when we play them but I don’t hate their fans.

CJ Dawg, I like Mannie Diaz also. He’s a bright energetic guy. I wonder if he could compete in the intense environment of the SEC though. His FSU experience suggests he could work in pressurized university setting but tranlating that in to SEC conference demands might push the envelope. It could be interesting to see if it could work. Failing to attract some coach with high performance experience, I hope Richt will consider some coach like Diaz.

Or even if the interest from Georgia wasn’t extreme. These are all great rumors but they are just that. Rumors.

That is a very good article Tim Tucker. Thank you.

Big XII Texas A&M THUMPED by UGA Bulldogs 44-20, is the ONLY BIG XII team to Lose their Bowl Game, to begin with. Bulldogs were supposed to win by 7, but instead UGA jumped all over the Big XII Texas A&M and their high-powered NCAA Number 5 Total Offense in the nation and won by 3 touchdowns and a field goal. It was a total annihilation. Now, Big XII Missouri was THUMPED by Navy 35-13. Missouri was supposed to not lose by 3 touchdowns and 2-point conversion either, but was supposed to win by 8 points. These are MAJOR BLOW-OUTS of Big XII teams, one by the ONLY SEC TEAM to win a BOWL GAME yet, UGA.

Tennessee vols’ lame butt THUMPED by Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, marking the 8th consecutive season that UGA has been the HIGHER RANKED TEAM than the Tennessee vols. This COMPLETES THE STRING OF TWO (2) ACC TEAMS beating the crap out of 2 SEC teams. Of course, this one was the # 2 ACC team and The SEC sent out our 10th worst SEC team, the Tennessee vols (7-6.) The vols had played a very soft schedule, SoS Number 52 this regular season and had beat NO RANKED TEAM. UGA was their only win of the season, and UGA is NOT RANKED. UGA might get close to being ranked in a poll here or there, but UGA absolutely had the BETTER SEASON than the Tennessee lame butt vols did at UGA 8-5 playing SoS # 7 this regular season. This is the 8th consecutive season now that The UGA Bulldogs have been THE HIGHER RANKED TEAM than the vols. Best of luck next year vols. vols LOST 14-37 to Virginia Tech. SLAUGHTERED. This RUINS the vols season. vols have LOST 3 STRAIGHT PEACH BOWLS all in HUGE BLOWOUTS, this 1 by 3 touchdowns and a field goal. Nice. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer group of hillbillies. Can’t wait to hear how soon to be ON PROBATION Lame Kitten tells us all how this is some MORAL VICTORY AS WELL.

Florida crocodile commits are DROPPING LIKE FLIES. Urban Meyer’s LIES to his recruits ARE NOT RINGING TRUE. His REVERSAL was ONLY TO KEEP THE TOP RECRUITING CLASS IN THE NATION. Urban Meyer, with his brain cyst and with his heart valve congenital defect many Americans have – but in his case serious chest pains causing his wife Shelley to dial 911 at 4 a.m. He got up out of bed complaining of the chest pains, fell and was lying unconscious on the floor, will NEVER COACH AGAIN. Urban Meyer did not even know he was taken the hospital, if you ask him. He doesn’t remember the ambulance. He told us he didn’t remember the ambulance. How sick is Urban Meyer ? Critical. The University of Florida has a lot of answering to do to all of us who love Urban Meyer, when his health goes drastically down hill after 8:30 p.m. TONIGHT. Better get this right UF.

Steve Addazio is a JOKE of a perennial Tight Ends Coach, who when Urban Meyer needed to REPLACE DAN MULLEN, was promoted to OC and promptly played 8 teams that Dan Mullen had played just the previous season as Urban Meyer’s REAL Offensive Coordinator. In the 8 games against common opponents, Dan Mullen scored 17 points per game MORE than did Steve Addazio. Steve Addazio is the HEAD COACH OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA. And, now, he has to REPLACE DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR Charlie Strong, as well.

Don’t expect Florida to be as good as they have been. Certainly will NOT LOSE JUST 1 GAME, to Alabama. That game is GAME 5 next season. There is a DROP-OFF at Florida for their football team. With the defections and un-committing by Urban Meyer’s Florida RECRUITS for the Signing Class coming up now in 4 weeks, it has now begun. Took 2 days. They are ANNOUNCING THEY RENOUNCE THEIR VERBAL COMMITMENTS, which were NEVER binding anyway.

MACK BROWN, please come to UGA. You can start Game 1. You can play 3 years at The University of Ground Attack. We have a top Quarterback to throw the football to you too, and we have 2 of the FINEST FULLBACKS in the United Stares this year to block for you, anchored behind a 6-DEEP Offensive Line Senior Class and a 6-DEEP Offensive Line Junior Class, along with 3 TOP TIGHT ENDS, including Tight End Orson Charles, whom Steve Addazio was responsible for recruiting to Florida, but chose UGA over Florida.

Iowa State gave Big 10 Minnesota a LOSING RECORD. The Big 10 is a HORRIBLE FOOTBALL CONFERENCE. Minnesota is NOW 6-7, and they got to play in a bowl game. Minnesota had beat NO TEAM in the Final BCS Top 34. Iowa State was 6-6 themselves, and their new coach said pre-game that despite Las Vegas picking Minnesota that his 6-6 team would win, although they aren’t any good but HAD BEAT NEBRASKA, to ruin Nebraska’s year, much like UGA’s THUMPING OF GA tek, ruined GA tek’s season 30-24 to complete 8 of 9 for Coach Richt and UGA’s 60th THUMPING of GA tek, a feat accomplished by only 4 other 1-A teams.

GA tek PUNKED by UGA 30-24.

I got all the Bowl Games correct today, except for the Peach Bowl. The vols used to recruit players from the state of Georgia who bragged at Tennessee that they DO NOT PLAY IN PEACH BOWLS, but a quick study on that finds that the Tennessee vols at ObKnoxiousville have now played in THREE PEACH BOWLS in the Coach Richt Era. Coach Richt and UGA have played in 1. UGA won our Peach Bowl game BEATING Virginia Tech. I was at that game. It was a great win. Instead, the vols THUMPED by the same Virginia Tech. Thanks a lot vols.

MACK BROWN come to UGA, Urban Meyer is telling you a LIE that he is going to Coach Florida NEXT SEASON. He is NOT. In fact, he will NEVER COACH AGAIN, IN HIS LIFETIME ANYWHERE.

OBVIOUSLY.

And, FU’s head coach is Steve Addazio, leaving him to find both an Offensive and Defensive Coordinator, and I say leaving FU having to hire a head football coach too.

“He almost sounds like he’s kind of trying to cry,” Shelley Meyer, said about Urban Meyer unconscious on her bedroom floor in 911 call. Urban had stated he was NOT taken to the hospital. So, did FU’s Jeremy Foley. They are trying to cover this ALL up, and NO ONE IS BUYING IT. Lie after Lie is being exposed, daily.

Tony Barnhart talks and talks about FU Urban Meyer and NOT HAVING A COACH. But, he FAILS to say who in the Hell is HIRING THE REPLACEMENT FOR CHARLIE STRONG ?

Dan Mullen was Urban Meyer’s Offensive Quarterback Coach at Bowling Green. Dan Mullen was Urban Meyer’s Offensive Quarterback Coach at Utah. Dan Mullen was Urban Meyer’s Offensive Quarterback Coach and Offensive Coordinator at Florida. Urban Meyer has LOST both his OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR and his DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR.

You can WHINE about the recruits leaving all you want, but Urban Meyer CANNOT HANDLE THE PRESSURE of hiring his COACHING STAFF.

Urban Meyer at the odd wacky strange weird peculiar unusual off the wall Press Conference to open the Sugar Bowl, could not formulate an entire sentence. Not 1. Urban son, your answers are those of a crazy man. Please take care of your health.

Please. We all love you. You are NOT right. You could not answer any question.

Not the least of which is WHO is going to HIRE the Defensive Coordinator to replace Charlie Strong. You could not formulate an answer to that Urban Meyer and whether Tony Barnhart recognizes it or not, THAT is YOUR NEXT PRESSURE COOKER.

Did you know your body will NOT handle that Urban Meyer ?

Matt Elam texted Jeff Luc that Matt had committed to FSU, not believing you Jeremy Foley.

If you want to know who is to blame for all this.

That is Jeremy Foley.

Urban Meyer is NOT IN HIS RIGHT MIND.

Urban Meyer is NOT to blame.

Good Lord, someone please sue Jeremy Foley today, now, before 8:30 p.m. tonight’s Sugar Bowl and let Urban Meyer tell us goodbye during the game he loves..

Either that Jeremy Foley, son, or YOU are responsible for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that happens to Urban Meyer after 8:30 p.m. today.

Did you hear that Jeremy Foley, you LIAR ?

And, FORGET NOT that Steve Addazio’s 17 points per game FEWER in 8 common games last year and this year of Dan Mullen OC and Steve Addazio “OC” prove beyond a SHADOW OF DOUBT that Steve Addazio is NOT Dan Mullen, not even CLOSE.

HEAD FOOTBALL COACH AT FLORIDA ?

Steve Addazio.

He has to HIRE replacement for DC Charlie Strong.

Steve Addazio ALSO HAS TO HIRE AN O.C.

FLORIDA IS IN A MESS.

Urban Meyer, we love you and appreciate you sir; now QUIT TELLING LIES to your recruiting class who SEE RIGHT THROUGH IT ANYWAY, and take care of your health.

YOU CANNOT POSSIBLY EVER COACH COLLEGE FOOTBALL AGAIN.

NEVER. Not 1 day.

You know it. Shelley knows it. I know. Your 3 kids know it. All your recruits know it. All your players know it. Tim Tebow knows it. God knows it. Your coaching career is over. Quit with the LIES and shenanigans to get to Signing Day and GET IN BED.

RETIRE.

You have more than enough money.

Let that be it.

Leave of absence, my butt.

LIAR.

You are TOO HIGH STRUNG, and always have been. You have CRIED after every loss, like a crybaby does. And, now that has taken a toll on your overall health.

Please quit today at 8:30 p.m. and let us all stand and cheer you and hug you and tell you we will just have to move on without the greatest coach in college football.

Great guy.

Thank you very much.

Goodbye at 8:30 p.m. tonight in the Sugar Bowl.

THE TIME TO QUIT is DURING THE GAME, Urban Meyer.

Coach Richt Era at UGA, who was hired by Vincent J. Dooley, December 20, 2000 :

LAST NINE (9) YEARS :

101-15 Texas, has loss to Alabama to come this season.

101-15 Boise State, has loss to TCU to come this season.

96-25 Oklahoma worse season than UGA this season, by far.

97-19 Southern California in the PAC-0 (PAC-0 is 2-4 in Bowls so far.)

93-21 Ohio State Suckeyes who are 0-9 vs. SEC in Bowl Games All-Time.

91-26 LSU, has Penn St today or drops to tie in losses with Coach Richt

90-27 Georgia Bulldogs in Coach Richt Era 7-2 Bowls for 26 to overtake vols.

89-27 Florida with NO COACH but 3 National Championships since 1996.

88-31 Virginia Tech after THUMPING of vols tonight.

85-26 TCU, has win over Boise State to come this season.

82-29 Utah after they THUMPED Mighty PAC-0 California.

81-32 Miami of Florida, they haven’t done a thing in ACC, nothing.

81-35 Boston College

78-35 Auburn, has game against Big 10 Northwestern 11 am today.

77-37 Texas Tech, has game without Mike Leach & his lawsuit.

75-38 Tennessee vols, 15 wins less than Coach Richt 11 more LOSSES.

75-40 Alabama 1 game to go, been WORSE than vols Coach Richt Era.

73-42 FSU who never had any QB after Coach Richt left FSU, not 1.

72-40 Michigan, so this 5-7 isn’t their ONLY LOUSY SEASON, is it?

72-44 GA tek, God they have been WORSE than Michigan. 1-8 vs Richt.

71-39 Pennsylvania State has been God Awful in Coach Richt Era.

13 Seasons (staring 1997) UGA has at least 8 wins a season, no other team better.

26 Bowl Wins now for UGA leaving only Southern California and Alabama with more.

You cannot LOSE to 2 teams both 7-6 vols and 7-6 Kentucky. That sucks. This is UGA, we cannot have LOSSES to one 7-6 team. That is NOT UGA football.

Otherwise, I have no problem with this year. Now, Coach Richt get you an NFL Defensive Coordinator and Mack Brown, please sir; and, tell UGA to give Decory Bryant his damn $500,000 and do it NOW Coach Richt, or give it to him yourself.

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!!!!!!!!!
