Athens — One more name will be scratched from the list of rumored Georgia defensive coordinators if the University of Illinois’ press conference goes off as planned this afternoon.
And if it doesn’t go off as planned, then today will get really intriguing in Athens.
Illinois has called a 2 p.m. press conference to announce Vic Koenning as its new defensive coordinator.
At this late (early?) hour, that press conference is still scheduled.
Koenning also has talked with Georgia about its DC opening, and by some accounts Georgia’s interest in him went from tepid to torrid on Thursday.
Rumors were flying for a while Thursday night, intensifying with an 8:45 p.m. Twitter post by ESPN’s Joe Schad that Koenning “now close to deal to become Georgia’s DC, changing from Illinois” and seemingly fizzling with a 10:02 p.m. tweet by Schad that “ESPN.com reports Vic Koenning will land in Illinois after changing mind twice.”
What we know for sure at this point is that Illinois has a press conference scheduled for today -– and Georgia doesn’t.
Anyway, I should probably wrap up this post by answering the question some of you might be asking: Who’s Vic Koenning? He’s Kansas State’s co-defensive coordinator and formerly the defensive coordinator at Clemson and Troy, and before all of that he was head coach at Wyoming. His last name, by the way, is pronounced CONE-ing.

And 30-24 is always and will always be better than 24-30.
As for Koenning, he is just playing the field for the best deal he can get. If he was approached by UGA and Illinois offered more money, than he would be a fool not to take that offer.

Not when 11-2 is in the ACC. That equals about 6-6 in the SEC

I just don’t believe that we offered VK the job especially when CMR said that it might go on until January. I believe VK really wanted to come to UGA and Illinois made him a great offer. He called UGA to see if we would make him an offer. CMR told him the timeline in January. VK then mullled should he wait on a “maybe from UGA or do the sure thing. Like most wise people, he took the sure thing. No way would he choose Illinois over UGA if we offered him.

I got no dog in this fight. My team has hit bottom. I am ashamed of the attitude of most ND fans. They are still living in the past. Only one other group of fans are living even further in the past. Let’s face it, both ND and UGA have become irrevilent. Both schools recruit the best athletes available. It seems that a very low percent of those recruits excell as they progress thru their college career. What is to blame? Got to be coaching. We just cut our losses. Richt just fired three coaches. Will that solve the problem in Athens?

Irish, I dont know if ND is irrelavent. They still carry clout as a program, and half the nation loves em, the other half hate em just because the first half love em.. Thats a good thing. Shouldn’t be a long trip back to relevantland.
But let’s be honest, they havent played good football in a long time. This decade. This is the first year in a long time UGA hasnt. UGA is disappointed to go to the bowl that ND would have taken in past several years.
Trying to maintain the nation’s longest streak of 8 wins seasons, and upset it’s not 10, is a far cry to figuring out how to have winning seasons.

To those who are “tired of” “bend but don’t break”, remember that Erk was fond of that philosophy as well. The trouble with it today is that most offenses have many more weapons to attack a defense near the goal line, especially with the fact that receivers ( including tight ends ) tend to be a few inches taller than your average DB. I totally agree that the new DC will have talent and experience available, and should have a “better” defense next year ( and would have improved even if CWM hadn’t been released ). But, there is merit in the argument that the offense needs to protect the football and control the clock. Wasn’t it CTT ( Auburn ) that made the comment that CMR would have to “learn to run the ball” to have SEC success? A modern “bend but don’t break” defense cannot play what becomes a “prevent” defense. Play must be aggressive over the whole field, and when the opponent reaches the red zone, the “shortened” field can aid an aggressive defense. Yes, that type of play can allow a big play, but if done correctly, the “timing” of the offense is affected and big defensive plays ( like take-aways ) will happen. I just hope the new DC understands how the “game” has changed.

Who are these GT fans bashing UGA? Forget athletics where UGA smokes GT, check the records. UGA is consistently in the top 25 national rankings and top 10 for some others, for top public universities (above GT in every one.) Last year rated the #1 public university for return on investment! Buzz on that for a while!
By the way, do you really think CMR lost out to Illinois? If he wanted Koenning, he’d have gotten him. We already have our DC, we just can’t announce it yet!
