It’s official: Koenning is at Illinois

Athens — OK, you can officially remove another name from the list of candidates for Georgia’s open defensive-coordinator job: Vic Koenning was introduced as Illinois’ new defensive coordinator at a press conference in Champaign, Ill., this afternoon.
While Georgia discussed its DC job with Koenning, his reported salary with Illinois — $325,000 — would suggest UGA didn’t aggressively target him. That’s almost the same salary Willie Martinez was making ($325,815 plus bonuses), and indications are that Georgia is prepared to go well beyond that figure for the right hire.
“There was some dialogue [with Georgia],” Koenning said at today’s press conference, “and it made for an interesting last 16, 18 hours, you might say. But when push comes to shove, the character and the drive and the enthusiasm that [Illinois] coach [Ron] Zook exhibited makes sure there was no doubt in the outcome.”
A couple of hours before Illinois’ press conference, Georgia coach Mark Richt passed when asked to shed light on Georgia’a interest in Koenning.
“I think everything is just –- this whole search stuff -– I’ll just say there is nothing to shed,” Richt said. “I’ve got nothing to shed on it.”
Richt did not signal that his search is any closer to resolution than on Wednesday, when he said it might last into the new year. He noted that many prospective candidates are committed to completing the season with their current teams. That would apply to college coaches whose teams are in bowls, as well as to NFL coaches.
“It’s just a really crummy time of year to be trying to do what we’re doing here,” Richt said, “but that’s just part of it right now.”
He did say Georgia’s three staff openings are generating a lot of interest.
“I know I’ve got a stack of stuff [from] an awful lot of people,” he said. “It’s more than just the D-coordinator job too -– there are lot of position coaches looking –- but we’ve got to get the D-coordinator thing squared away before we move forward to anything else.”

Although Brown just signed an extension, WC will be around 40 when that is done. And he’ll be right there for one of the premiere programs in the country. I”ll be surprised if WC ever leaves Texas.

I still find it QUITE interesting that KS has not gotten the “raise to stay”, yet. Nor has he or Bama come out and publically said he’s not going anywhere. See Bud Foster. Doing that would end a big distraction.
That said, CMR did say this would go until after the BCS games. Another interesting comment AND one that leads me to believe that VC was never involved.

My problems with the idea that its a done deal, and everyone is just playing along to keep it secret is:
1. He doesnt have that authority to hush everyone at the AD deptment. Or the control. Not in this day and age.
2. He damn sure doesnt have that Authority at the Alabama AD. If Saban is going to without a DC, somebody over there knows, and has been putting our feelers of thier own. They arent going to start looking in Late Jan for a DC. Lying to recruits and everyone else this whole time.
3. What purpose is served for either school to delay the announcment?
4. He’s putting himself in a horrible situation, to “hope” that whomever it is keeps thier word, and his old boss just drops it,because that blowing up in your face 3 weeks before signing day is not a good thing. I suppose it’s possible a contractual agreement could have been made involving all 3 parties.
5.He is either stringing every other candidate along, which I doubt, or it’s not a “done deal”. (although we really don’t know if he is actually seriously talking to other candidates, or if the lack of an announcement is just driving specualtion which he really can’t stop)

As little as it worth, here is my candidate list according to preference:
1.Bill Withers (UNC DC) lots of experience and good character.
2.Sal Suneri (Ala Linebacker Coach) UGA linebackers have been a weakness for years. We need to get back to the basics. In college football, linebackers control the field and win games. Plus experience and a chance to DC at a top SEC program could pull him in.
3.Travis Jones (Saints Linebacker Coach) repeat from above. Connects to the south. Proven SEC recruiter. NFL experience.
4.T. Nix (Ole Miss DC) good solid coach. Proven in the SEC. Does a great job with and understands the role of linebackers in coach football. But has never taken his teams all the way.
5.Ellis Johnson (SC DC) again solid coach. Not completely sold on him.
6.Bob Sanders (Bill D-line coach) great experience. Good solid coach. Not a DC. Not coming back to college field.
7.Kirby Smart (Ala DC) hot commodity. Young with very little experience. Still learning from Satan. I think he can see how great it would be to return to UGA but honestly he is still learning. 10 years when CMR retires lets go after him then.
8.CRG (recruiting God) lets keep him recruiting. Has never been offered the DC job before for a reason. Good character to keep at UGA.
9.Kevin Steele (Clemson DC) he is a better coach than most UGA fans give him credit for. Would do a solid job but so would a lot of other people. He is not going to get us to the next level.
10.Manny Diaz (MTSU DC) young exciting but no record to go off of. He would have to really sell himself to CMR. Just because his dad is a mayor does not make him a recruiter. I have never heard a recruit meeting or even knowing who the mayor of Miami is. Does not mean much.
11.Dick Bumpas, Will Muschamp and Vic Koening (TCU DC, UT DC & KSU DC) I put all of these DC’s in the same group because they all are proven DC’s but have to much baggage. I don’t want the DC here going for their last farewell. But would not cry if any of them came.
12.BVG (Falcons) screw him. Don’t want him. Don’t need him well we might need him but definitely don’t want him.
Until we get a better defense, we will not return to the SECCG. We have had good defenses and have had good offenses but rarely in the same year. Believe in CMR. He has respect for all programs and is not going to barge into any program and speak to a coach during the season. He has mentioned in the past how difficult it was for him to coach in the bowl game when he was thinking about the UGA job. He will do his best not to put somebody else in that situation. I truly believe if Dawg nation was not crying for the firing like we did it would not have happened until after our Bowl game. Lastly for all of you who think UGA is not one of the top programs in college football. You obviously have never left the state you residence in currently. Good luck coach. Keep the faith.

I know from the Tech game you guys have a hard time telling time (halftime and Gatorade bath at the end). I didn’t realize you didn’t understand the calendar too. If coach said it would be the 1st week of January, that actually eliminates Kirby Smart. You see, there are seven days in a week. Bama’s game is on the 7th. So, if Smart were to take the job then it would be the second week of January. Now, you could say that would fall into the first FULL week of January. Granted, but, wouldn’t the headline SMART DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR be an oxymoron when talking about UGA?

Why would Mushamp or Smart want to ever come back to UGA? They both left for good reasons and NOTHING has changed since they left. More money? Pulease. Ask John Bond how things worked out for him when he went over to GA Tech as their Offensive Coordinator for Chan Gailey. One year on the job, Gailey got fired and then Bond was on the street looking for work. If Mark Richt doesn’t get his act together, the new defensive coordinator might be in that same position in just a couple of years, and Muschamp and Smart have both already seen the politics at UGA from the inside.

Why don’t we just wait and see who he hires? Rumors and speculation crack me up. The man said it may last into January. So what if we miss a couple of recruits, might do us some good.
Regardless if somebody has the opportunity to come to UGA and coach in the SEC or go to the Big Ten and be DC that’s a no brainer. The Big Ten is the easier job by far. You only have to face Ohio State in that conference. Maybe Penn State if they are up.

I would love Kirby Smart to come here but – logically, its just not that likely….
Kirby Smart is in the best position he can be in short of getting a big-time head-coaching gig. Alabama defense has been humming for last 3 years with no end in sight. As Alabama’s excellent defense continues to shine, Kirby Smart’s stock for a premo head coaching job will continue to go upward. In one to two years, Kirby Smart will probably get his own head coaching job at a “top 10-20″ program somewhere in the country – probably the South.
If Smart comes to UGA and fails to turn the defense around – he’s done – his name will be removed from the short list of hot head coaching prospects……he also won’t have Nick Saban to lean on and the overall lack of discipline that CMR runs his program.
The only draw to UGA for Kirby Smart is it being his alma mater……..I know Kirby would come back as head coach(that is not happening) but not as a defensive coordinator…….
just not gonna happen.

All Chavis could say is no. Chavis makes perfect sense, bc Smart and Muschamp aren’t coming. Perhaps he would like to work for Richt more than Les “I can’t manage the clock” Miles. Chavis is a no-brainer. Tough, attacking defenses’ year in, year out!

SCDawg, I like your thinking. I would put Ellis Johnson higher on the list, based on how well he’s done with lesser talent at USC. But those are solid (and realistic) candidates you list. I like any up and comer with proven experience in both college and the NFL.
I seriously doubt Smart (or Muschamp) will be coming to Georgia. Their next jobs will be as head coaches somewhere. Good for them. That’s okay. Richt knows what to look for, and we will get someone who can coach championship defense.

The Koenning rumor was definatly bs. He is only going to be making $325,000 per @ Illinios. That is way below what UGA could have offered him if they wanted him. Was there some talk? Yes, UGA has nothing to lose bye keeping him on the line as a backup plan but there was never anything serious. Shad’s source was likely Koenning’s agent and his job is to get more money. No one in there right mind chooses Zook and lower money over Richt, more money, and better recruits.
My guess from how laid back Richt is, is that he’s already found his guy and there is reason he can’t let it out of the bag yet.
In the end Joe Shad is the one who will look like and idiot when it becomes obvious he got played by an agent. A good reporter filters out that trash.

I actually feel that it will be a long time before Tech has a chance to beat UGA again. As per Anthony Dasher with UGASports and his conversation with his counterpart at Orange&Blue (Illinois Rival site).
I just spoke to Jeff Johnson, the publisher for Orange&Blue, the Rivals site that covers Illinois…We’ve been trading info, sources, the past day and this is what we have ascertained about this entire Koenning mess.
A. All this stuff about Koenning, deciding between Georgia and Illinois..It’s BS….Jeff spoke with an assistant from K-State, who said all this about Georgia having interest in Koenning, came from Koenning’s agent. In essense, just to get $50,000 more from Illinois. There was absolutely NO truth to the suggestion that Koenning changed his mind two or three times.
B. According to this same K-State assistant, Koenning WAS NEVER offered the DC job at Georgia by Coach Richt. The agent WAS apparently called by CMR, to check on Koenning’s interest, but that WAS IT.
C. Contact was also made with Tulsa assistant Ron West, whose name had been linked as coming with Koenning. West said that he was disgusted with the way Koenning’s agent was speading rumors about VK.
D. According to the coaches at Kansas State, they are hearing that CMR is looking to hire a coach from the NFL, but did not know of any names.

Seriously, we all just need to be patient. Richt has extensive contacts throughout the college and NFL ranks. He is taking this hire very seriously as he knows it is a very important step. I have confidence that he will make the right choice for the job.
Someone posted Richt doesn’t have the authority or power to keep things quiet in the AD. All he has to do is keep his conversations between himself, Evans and Adams. As long as neither of them speek, no one will be able to. Depending on what stage he is actually at, he may not even have to speak to them to keep it silent. Could it possibly be that Richt was given a cap to spend on the DC and he does not even need to consult either of them prior to making an offer.

I think some of these coaches contacted Richt and sent in a resume, others Richt might have talked to about one of the OTHER 2 positions other than DC currently open on the defensive side or Richt might have had a preiliminary call with some of these guys just to narrow the list of potential candidates.
I think these coaches, like Koenning and Foster, try and put out the perception that they are being offered the DC job, when Richt says he didn’t offer them the job.

He would hope it wasn’t much past the first week of Jan is what he said, not it’s going to be then. That could have meant a number of things including the most simple explaination…….that he was just stating the fact. That timeframe is a number of things, not just the NC game. Or after the bowls. The problem is that in order for the deal to be done, presumably it’s not a one way discussion. Just our 3 guys decided whats going to happen. I’m guessing Smart would have had to be at least consulted. And Saban. And some attorneys, and agents. I’d say for it to be a done deal no less than a dozen folks would have to know. not counting wives and administrative assistants.
There are too many grown ups involved to come up with: lets keep it secret for a month. The risk of it leaking , and then losing all control of how it has to be announced is not a professional plan. At best the old boss has asked for a delay so that he can get through the bulk of his bowl preparation without the distraction. And get his new DC up to speed.
I also think it’s a misconception, that they would just keep it secret for the sake of the bowl game. The guy leaving knows. Either his heart is into it or not. By the game the plan is in place, and the replacement, probbaly within the staff is as familiar with it any anyone. I dont see just trying to fool the team into thinking he isn’t leaving so they will play better. 2 plays into the game, that’s not going to matter. I have a hard time believing that Saban feels like he needs this to be a secret till after the game. But I can understand him wanting to get through the preparation.
(Not that I think it is K. Smart right now) It might End Up that way but I actually believe that Richt is telling the truth, as it stand at this point in time. But I do think he is getting very close.

Smart has never definitively stated he was not interested in the Dawg DC Job. He may very well be headed this way. As a former player and with a wife who was also a UGA athlete I would think it would be a natural move as long as the money is there.
I’d be just as happy to see Ellis Johnson. He’s put together a Devastating Defense at SC with very good starting talent but limited talent depth.
Both are proven winners – as is Tubberville. I think the decision has already been made and if it were Tubberville there would have been no need to delay that announcement so it’s likely not him.
The new guy will be announced quickly after the bowl games. If not then we have a problem.

For the last time, Mack Brown did NOT sign a contract extension. He simply got a raise for the remainder of his current contract, which already ran through 2016. On the very same day, Will Muschamp also got a raise and signed his official agreement to become the head coach when Mack Brown retires. Muschamp is not going anywhere, least of all to be the defensive coordinator at some other program. He’s already the highest paid defensive coordinator in the country and works for a perennial national title contender. I realize he’s a UGA alumnus an all, but this would not even be a lateral move, considering how much more money he would make at Texas for the same job, not to mention the guarantee to be head coach.

Valdosta Dawg – Quick question – UGA is, at best, a second tier SEC team and if things take a small step in the wrong direction, UGA will be third tier. You can argue, say it isn’t so, and attack the messenger, but anyone who watches college football knows that. Having said that, why on earth would smart leave an Alabama program which is on the rise, better run, better supported, and essentially superior in every way to UGA? Because he played at UGA? Hmmm, seems like if he is going to leave BAMA it will be for a head job. Seems unlikely he desires a big (big) step back. Bama’s last title—-which seems forever ago–was in the early 1990’s–way after UGA’s title. And, Bama fans never talk about that one. Yet, dawg fans live off of 1980, as does the crusty coach who rode Walker to that title. Kind of sad. Hopefully, UGA will remain above Miss State and Vandy, but that is certainly not a given.

Honestly, I don’t understand all of the hubaloo about Kirby Smart. Do any of you honestly think he’ll get a head coaching job at a BCS school w/o being a REAL DC and proving himself, first??? We all know that that defense at Alabama is Saban’s and his alone. If Smart were to go to UGA, or any other school for that matter, and were to be allowed to have full control over a defense, and were to be successful at it. THEN he might become a HC, in a few years at least.
With all of the talent at UGA it seems like a natural to me. Why stay at Bama and continue to be under Saban’s shadow??

My point is that he’ll be closer to becoming a HC of his own program by building up some team’s defense from the ground up. Nobody will hire this guy because he hasn’t faced any adversity as Bama’s DC. Saban wasn’t always the coach he is today. How one deals w/ adversity is how you become a HC. Smart needs the challenge of leading his own defense, whether it be at UGA or elsewhere. Saban will always be over the defense at Bama.

All of your Tech football commitments are ranked the Number 50 or the Number 90 in the Nation at their position. You have only 1 player recruited from outside the state of Georgia, and in-state you have nothing but the dredges, and they all will come to Tech and FLUNK OUT, as your Academic Progress Rate APR for Tech is WAY WORSE than the NCAA APR of UGA in football, who just beat your brains in, again doing little more than handing the ball off and lining up our men against your boys, who could NOT stop us, while by contrast, you GAVE UP ON YOUR HIGH SCHOOL OFFENSE and threw 4 passes to END THE GAME, 24-30.

The biggest culprit in the ACC of LOSING BOWL GAMES has been in fact, Georgia Tech who has LOST 7 OF THE LAST 10 TECH BOWL GAMES.
You are quoting the combined bowl records of ACC teams, in bowl games. Excuse me, the ACC gets NO DAMN CREDIT for winning a bowl game if the team in question was NOT IN THE STINKING ACC with a LOSING BOWL RECORD.
Paul Hewitt has a LOSING RECORD to UGA in men’s basketball. Paul Hewitt is on NCAA PROBATION with an Academic Progress Rate of 914. The NCAA has limited Paul Hewitt to only 11 scholarships in men’s basketball. The APR of Tech in men’s basketball is WAY WORSE than the APR of UGA in men’s basketball. Paul Hewitt is 4-5 vs. UGA in men’s basketball.
60-39-5 in Football is UGA’s record, with Coach Richt now 8-1 vs. Tech. including 30-24. Tech’s APR is WAY WORSE THAN UGA in football.

The Truth about what happened with Koenning. On his way to Illinois, Richt called and offered the job and Koenning accepted. Koenning then called and resigned from Illinois. Not too much later, Richt called back and reneged on the offer, leaving Koenning to beg Zook for the job back.

UGA 615 acres, 34,180 students, Land Grant, Sea Grant.
UGA # 58 Top National University U.S. News & World Report, 55 % accepted.

Clearly, both UGA and UF are 2 of the Top National Universities in the latest U.S. News and World Report Rankings for 2010, both “Top Tier” National Universities.
UF dominates UGA in every manner possible. UF is far more selective at only 39 percent acceptance rate for enrollment at UF than UGA at 55 %.
UF is the higher ranked National University, Number 47 to Number 58 in the latest Rankings of National Universities.
UF has won 17 of the last 20 in football, and frankly only in women’s basketball and in baseball does UGA prevail. Women’s Gymnastics as well, but that sport is not included in the NACDA Directors’ Cup for some odd reason. UGA has won 8 of last 8 against tek.

Just as there is no question that Florida is the DOMINANT FOOTBALL PROGRAM for 2 DECADES because of Steve Spurrier at Florida, 1 of their own and 1 of only 5 Florida players in the College Football Hall of Fame.

What is Most Incongruous about GA tek fans posting again about Florida are their posts about Paul Johnson as a name on the list to replace Urban Meyer at Florida.
Paul Johnson played 6 games against teams not even in a bowl game, and YET LOST MORE GAMES than Florida did playing only 4 teams who aren’t in a bowl game.
I mean how good is Paul Johnson, anyway ?
He recruits very poorly.
His offense has zero tight ends and at most 1 receiver on the whole entire roster.
A QB who in 35 games has only 13 TD passes to 11 interceptions and is the Number 115 Passing Offense in the NCAA this season, yet this is what they went to when they scrapped their high school offense and threw 4 plays in a row to lose to a 7-5 team playing in Shreveport, NE LA at a high school stadium (larger than Tech’s Grant Field Bobby Dodd Stadium.)
There are only 3 football players in all of America who have committed to come play on this high school offense of Paul Johnson.

He fired Jon Tenuta to hire the linebackers’ coach at So Miss to come be his Defensive Coordinator.
With 6 games against teams not even in a bowl game, Paul Johnson’s “defense” is Number 57 against the Run, 54 Total Defense and 58 Scoring Defense.
And, his recruits are IDIOTS, not suited for the purpose for which they are intended as “student” – athletes.
Florida lost 1 game against # 1 Alabama. GA tek with Paul Johnson lost to UGA for God’s sake who LOST TO 5 OTHER TEAMS including Kentucky AND lost to Miami of Florida who otherwise beat no one, like UGA.
Soft schedule GA tek played.
It is, after all, all Paul Johnson has EVER COMPETED AGAINST.
GA tek fans think Florida wants their head football coach.
