Any college football coach seeking a defensive coordinator probably should put in a call to Bud Foster, Virginia Tech’s esteemed DC. And Georgia’s Mark Richt has.
Foster has been contacted by Georgia about its vacant defensive-coordinator position, the veteran coach confirmed through a spokesman Monday.
“He said he has been contacted,” Virginia Tech associate athletics director Dave Smith said by e-mail, “but that’s it.”
Asked if “that’s it” means talks haven’t progressed beyond initial contact, Smith replied: “That would be my take, but the only other thing [Foster] said was there really isn’t anything else to say.”
Foster has been on Virginia Tech’s staff for 23 seasons, the past 15 as defensive coordinator. He won the 2006 Frank Broyles Award as college football’s top assistant coach. His defenses often have been among the nation’s best.
He has turned down numerous offers to leave Virginia Tech for other coordinator jobs over the years, including an offer from South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier two years ago.
If he’s interested in the Georgia job, Foster should rank high –- very high –- on a list of candidates believed to include Alabama’s Kirby Smart, Kansas State’s Vic Koenning and others.
At Virginia Tech, Foster is making $402,000 this year, according to a recent USA Today survey of coaches’ salaries.
Former Georgia coach Jim Donnan mentioned on his 680 The Fan show today that he was told by Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer that Foster is talking with Georgia. Reached later by the AJC, Donnan said that’s all he knows about it and that he doesn’t want to inject himself into the matter.

You people who keep calling for the hire of Sylvester
Croom do realize he has not coached on the D-side of the ball
since he was an assistant as Alabama many many years ago and has
never been a defensive coordinator. His defensive experience is limited to
linebackers. He played as center at Alabama, coached linebackers there
as an assiistant, has been a running backs coach, and offensive coordinator, and
a head coach, but never a DC

So I guess using some of the logic seen on this blog, nobody in the SEC would hire Frank Beamer or Jim Grobe because they coach in the ACC? Grobe might arguably be the best HC in the whole damn country. Where did Brian Van Gorder coach before Richt hired him? Bud Foster can coach anywhere. Grobes OC can coach anywhere. The SEC has Ellis Johnson, Tyrone Nix, Kirby Smart, and Monte Kiffin who’s back to the NFL when sonny bites the dust. Beyond those guys who else do you have? Who among the 3 that could possibly be had is considered better than Foster among football guys and their coaching peers?

It doesn’t really matter who he coaches for. GT regularly beats him at VT and GT will regularly beat him at UGA.
The difference is: he will always lose to UF, UT, maybe LSU/AL…. and end the season with a more than like loss to GT.
So why move? Unless the $$$$ are great!!! But a move to UGA for this guy is career suicide.
He should look for a lower end head coach job, and double his salary… Probably would end up with a better W/L than if he goes to UGA, and would set himself up for a big payday…. when UGA fires Richt after losing the next 4 matches with GT, he can just step in as the head coach at UGA. Anyway, by that time Jimbo will have messed up at FSU, so Richt could go home.

Dan A., lol, UGA is over. Done. Well done. Last year, Tech beat the MOST TALENTED UGA TEAM EVER. This year, we were huge favorites against you leg humpers. Yeah, dogs won, just goes to show that anyone can win a rivalry game. That was your Super Bowl, just like 2008 was our Super Bowl.
But look at your program: it sux. Who’s your QB next year? Whoever it is, he wasn’t good enough to beat out Cox this year. Sad.
Yeah, nice win leg humpers, but now you dogs need to stay on the porch while the big dawgs play (in the BCS games). Enjoy.

If Bud Foster is making 402,000 a year and we offer to double or more his salary and he turns it down then he is a fool. VT is not going to come close to that.

Great to hear of the candidates. Would love to see Foster bring back the Junkyard “D”. I think he is on to something…. 3-4 star recruits who want to play for the University. They have more than talent, they have heart! Foster appears he can bring some passion to the “D”

Sorry mutts, get your heads out your a$$ES. Outside of Georgia, no one cares about UGA. VT plays nationwide. UGA NEVER ventures out of the southeast.

“Dave from GT” – Do they teach statistics at GT? Tech has lost 1 in a row and 8 out of 9 (most of those games with Willie at the helm of the Def). I don’t see how that projects to Tech winning anything more than a game or two a decade.

See, Foster can get 3 star guys to perform because his 3-star guys can read/write. UGA’s 5 star guys can/t read or write. Hence, it’s a lose-lose for Foster.

Bystander
it wasn’t that his defenses were getting worse.
ranking # from year to the next doesn’t necessarily indicate that his defenses gave up more points from one year to the next. if the scoring D is within the top 15-20 nationally which is less than 20 pts per game in scoring D we are going to be OK. I’d be ecstatic with that hire. if the o can average over 30 and the D under 20 that’s alot of W’s.
Total Defense:
2004 – #4 in the country—268.0 per game
2005 – #1 in the country—247.6 per game
2006 – #1 in the country—219.5 per game
2007 – #4 in the country—296.9 per game
2008 – #7 in the country—279.4 yards per game
2009 – #14 in the country–300 yds per game
Scoring Defense:
2004 – #2 in the country–12.8 pts per game
2005 – #2 in the country–12.9 pts per game
2006 – #1 in the country–11.0 pts per game
2007 – #3 in the country–16.1 pts per game
2008 – #13 in the country–16.7 pts per game
2009 – #11n the country—-15.8 pts per game

GT Joe – don’t run your mouth about crap you don’t know anything about, it makes you look stupid.
Aaron Murray will be our QB next year, and he was one of the top 5 QB prospects in the country in his recruiting class. He didn’t play this year for the same reason that Matt Barkeley SHOULDN’T have played at Southern Cal this year. Don’t worry, we’re not going anywhere. It’s hilarious that you’re trying to act like you’re the big dawgs (ironic that you used that word) when we have been to 3 BCS Bowl games this decade and have a 6-2 bowl record. You ever hear that phrase “act like you’ve been there?” Well, in your case, you can’t, because you haven’t.

In 2008, our #1 goal was to beat UGA.
2009, goals changed. Win the ACC, win a BCS bowl, NOT beat UGA (although that would be nice).
