Bud Foster won’t become Georgia’s new defensive coordinator, but the Bulldogs’ overtures to bring him to Athens will pay off for the highly respected coach.
Hours after acknowledging contact from UGA about its job, Foster late Monday agreed to new financial terms to remain at Virginia Tech.
“I’ve been approached for jobs -– the strongest one was Georgia -– and [Virginia] Tech came through with a package that’s going to keep me here,” Foster said Monday night in Blacksburg, Va., according to the Daily Press of Newport News, Va. “I’m pleased with that.
“On the table right now, there’s a nice situation for me to want to continue here and stay here.”
Virginia Tech said terms of the new deal, which had been in the works since the weekend, will not be released until it is finalized. But the key element is an annuity that will pay Foster a lump sum if he remains at the school another five years.
Foster, 50, is in his 23rd year at Virginia Tech, his 15th as defensive coordinator. He is making $402,000 this year.
Georgia coach Mark Richt is seeking a replacement for Willie Martinez, the defensive coordinator who was fired along with two other UGA defensive coaches on Dec. 2.
Earlier Monday, Foster confirmed through a spokesman that he had been approached by Georgia at some point since Martinez was fired.
“He said he has been contacted,” Virginia Tech associate athletics director Dave Smith said by e-mail in mid-afternoon, “but that’s it.”
Asked at the time if “that’s it” meant talks with Georgia hadn’t progressed beyond initial stages, Smith replied: “That would be my take, but the only other thing [Foster] said was there really isn’t anything else to say.”
A few hours later, he said he’s staying at Virginia Tech.
Although Richt has made no public comments about Georgia’s search, candidates widely rumored to be on his radar include Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, Kansas State defensive coordinator Vic Koenning and Buffalo Bills defensive-line coach Bob Sanders, among others. Smart, a former Georgia player, has said he is “not looking to go anywhere.”

Most people would choose the comfort of what they know over the unknown any time. Unless you inject money into the equation. Money was probably the only thing that was going to get a him to come and it looks like VT stepped up and made that a non-issue. This idea that he would want the “challenge of the SEC” or anything like that is overrated. He has a good gig there with a solid head coach that isn’t going anywhere. Foster is not likely a candidate for a head coaching job so he really is probably better off staying at VT.
Now if Tech’s defensive coordinator turned us down, I’d be offended.
Best of luck to Foster. Now let’s go get someone else.

Neither move makes any sense unless either was offered a HC-in-waiting kind of deal. Georgia is not making smart calls. Virginia Tech is ranked 14th in overall defense. Below are the top 10. Get someone from one of these schools. The only one I see that may leave would be from North Carolina. The others……… this would not be the best move. The Air Force D-Coordinator went to Air Force and has been there for 7-8 years and will not leave. Dick Bumpus from TCU is not going anywhere. The North Carolina coach would be the best bet. Here is his resume below.
Rank
1 TCU
2 Alabama
3 Texas
4 Florida
5 Ohio St.
6 North Carolina
7 Oklahoma
8 Penn St.
9 Nebraska
10 Air Force
Charlotte, N.C., native Everett Withers enters his second spring as North Carolina’s defensive coordinator and secondary coach.
In 2008, the opportunistic Tar Heel defense ranked eighth in the country with 20 interceptions, just one shy of the school record. Carolina returned a school-record four interceptions for touchdowns and posted a positive turnover margin (0.46) for the first time in nine years. Under Withers’ guidance, safety Trimane Goddard led the nation in interceptions en route to first-team All-ACC and second-team Walter Camp All-America honors. He became the first Tar Heel defensive back to earn All-America honors since Dre’ Bly in 1998.
Withers came to North Carolina after serving one season as the University of Minnesota’s defensive coordinator in 2007.
Withers spent six seasons with the Tennessee Titans from 2001-06 under head coach Jeff Fisher. From 2002-04, Withers helped the Titans defense tally 57 interceptions, which was the most for the franchise over a three-year period since 1993-95. The 57 interceptions also ranked fourth in the AFC and eighth overall during that time. The Titans totaled 21 picks in 2004, including 16 by the secondary.
In 2002, Withers directed a revamped secondary that added safeties Lance Schulters and rookie Tank Williams. The new arrangement helped the defense earn a top 10 ranking and Schulters’ six interceptions were the most by a Titans safety since 1993. Withers also developed Andre Dyson into a starter as a rookie in 2001 and helped him total 16 interceptions during his four-year Titan career, including six his final season.
Prior to working with the Titans, Withers was defensive backs coach under Mack Brown at Texas from 1998-2000, where he guided a Longhorns secondary which improved from 75th in the nation in pass defense in 1997 (132.7 efficiency rating) to first in the nation in 2000 (88.02). Withers is credited with helping a young corps of defensive backs improve in a number of statistical categories.
Withers joined the Longhorns after three seasons (1995-97) as defensive coordinator at Louisville. His 1996 defensive unit ranked fourth nationally in both total defense (235.8) and rushing defense (81.1) and led the NCAA in forced turnovers (41). While at Louisville, Withers helped current New York Giants All-Pro cornerback Sam Madison earn All-America honors for the Cardinals.
Withers’ first National Football League experience came with the New Orleans Saints where he worked as defensive quality control in 1994. Prior to his experience with the Saints, Withers was defensive backs coach at Southern Mississippi for two seasons (1992-93) and outside linebackers coach at Tulane in 1991. The first three years of Withers’ coaching career came at Austin Peay, where he was defensive coordinator (1988-89) and special teams/wide receivers coach (1990).
Withers earned his bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State in 1985. He was also a standout defensive back and captain for the Mountaineers from 1981-85. Withers and his wife, Kara, have two children, Tia and Pierce.

Normal Dawg – and, yes, the Iowa/GT matchup may turn out to be a really great game, but I think that depends a lot on which GT defense shows up (the one that played VT or the one that played UGA) and the health of our O-Line. Clemson had a real strong interior D that took away Dwyer for three quarters-the outside game saved us. Iowa is solid from end to end, so we will need to have everyone running on all cylinders if we are going to find a chink in the Iowa front line. That said, if any offense can do it, I believe ours can.

As for us getting rolled by the Aggies, they sure can score some points and I don’t like the fact we have two grad assistants coaching. It could get ugly on that side. That said, their defense is pretty bad. Look for us to replicate our game plan from our game with you guys and run it about 70% of the time, maybe more.

I laugh at the Tech fans that make idiot posts on here about Georgia’s DC search. If I were Tech I’d be worring about their own DC….he’s doing such a great job that a mid level Georgia team ran through the middle of his Tech defense like they were standing still. If you really look at the Tech team…Tech really doesn’t have a defense at all…the only way Tech wins is when their offense doesn’t hold the ball for long drives that eat up the clock. Georgia gave everyone who plays Tech in the future the key to beating them every time….just run it down their throat..they can’t stop a running team….its been proven time and time again. Iowa will run right at Tech all night..control the clock and beat Tech at their own game. Georgia beat them with an average offense and a below average defense….what’s that tell you about the talent Tech has both on the field and coaching. I feel sorry for Tech ..this year was an aberration…believe me Tech is not that good….The Tech fans that post on here are really inmature..just read their posts..they sound like school boys. What they need to remember is this…..GEORGIA RUNS THIS STATE…ALWAYS HAVE..ALWAYS WILL…30-24…CAN YOU DIG IT!

There was never any reason for Bud Foster to consider coaching at Georgia, he just used the talks as leverage to get a new contract. He is one of THE top D Coordinators in the country, and being a D Coordinator at UGA is not close to being one of THE top defensive jobs in the country. At a top SEC school, he probably would consider. But if he wants to compete for league championships and BCS bowl games, he will stick with Virginia Tech.

I like the idea of UGA hiring Boo Boo. As a blogger mentioned above, he knows how to shut down an offense. Let’s face it. It really doesn’t matter who you hire as defensive coordinator, If you can’t score, which you can’t, you can’t win. You are a bottom feeder and will continue to be a bottom feeder. Tech owns you and Paul Johnson will run off Mark Richt in 2 more years.

Stinger- what is that saying Defense wins Championships? Something else to add to the already long list that UGA has on Tech. and last time I checked Paul Johnson is 1-1 vs. UGA while CMR is 8-1. Obviously 8-1 is better than 1-1. And you lost to UGA on a down year when Tech was suppose to be great. Sure you might have a better record but your conference is sub par. Defense is played in the SEC and we mix in a little offense. The SEC has won the last 3 National Championships and is in line for its 4th and we play defense!

Predictions: Georgia will have a Defensive Coordinator named, at the latest, following the National Championship game…Tech will have its, vaunted, option offense handled enough to allow a lame Iowa bunch to win that Orange Bowl game. Of course, nobody will know, or care (except the two teams fans, of course) about it until they watch ESPN’s Bowl recap show…I will take up a collection to pay for any Tech fans that’ll stay at the EPIC Hotel while they’re in Miami, on the condition that they drink the water…UT fans that are proud of Lame Lane’s approach to coaching in the SEC will have a lot of crow to eat in a year or two – after Daddy’s had enough, his wife will have joined the BB coach’s ex-wife in that company named ‘Alimony, LLC’ and the vol-flirtteam ‘lady’ decides to have the pronunciation of her last name rhyme with the thing that Angels play rather than the stuff the stadium custodial crew has to clean up in the UT student section, and UT grads will have replaced Arkansas fans in the ‘most baffling. category – e.g., ‘I can’t believe those UT fans, they’ve got Lane Kiffin as a head football coach and are proud of it…as opposed to those that have a pig for a mascot and are…well, you get it blanket-head.

As of last Thursday, Tech has sold less than 9,000 of its 17,500-ticket allotment. Each ticket is $125 and can be purchased at Tech’s Web site. In comparison, Iowa reports its has sold 14,000.
As for the independence, well I’ll let you guess:

Mighty strange you can still get CLUB LEVEL seats at the orange bowl. I thought that was a major bowl? Surely you tech fans would buy all of the tickets to the game, right? I mean, hardly any of you went to the acc chumpionship game, so you have to have money left, right? I fully expect to read an announcement that tech had to return some of the bowl tickets!!

Withers knows he’s still second fiddle to the bb team. Come on to UGA where football is king!! Besides, why would he stay at a school where they can’t score any points? Their offense is terrible! They would have won the acc if it wasn’t for their offense. Talk all you want to about Bobo, but even Rivals.com has him ranked in the top 15.
Course, Withers is a Charlotte native, so that might keep him where he is.
Course i forgot, someone mentioned days ago about the recruiter at UNC (John Blake). He’s also a very good defensive coach. I”m sure he’d like to be recruiting coordinator AND DC. Either one of those would be good catches. Seem very good at spotting talent AND getting the most out of it.

Why would Bud leave Va Tech which has about a 75% chance of a BCS game every year to go to some middle of the road SEC team as the DC? Now if you were talking about taking Richt’s place I could see that. But a lateral to uga? Makes no sense at all.

Bud Foster was never going to UGA.He has said repeatedly over the last few years that he would only leave for a head coaching job. With the 5 year deal,it may just work out that Beamer retires around that time and Foster becomes head coach. He is an outstanding DC with VT defenses that, other than this season, consistently rank in the Top 10.

So flagboy, has the fact that you are constrained by arbitrary old-school grammar rules (Language is alive and free to change without your input. Don’t try to constrain it, less you constrain yourself.) kept you from obtaining gainful employment as well? Get smart, cogitate more and conjugate less. Hell, if E. E. UNC outspend UGA? Ha ha ha. Look at the athletic spending for 2007. Do you see UNC on there?
1.Ohio State———-$109,000,000
2.U of Florida——–$108,000,000
3.U of Texas———-$105,000,000
4.U of Tennessee——$ 95,000,000
5.U of Michigan——-$ 89,000,000
6.U of Wisconsin——$ 83,000,000
7.U of Alabama——–$ 81,946,000
8.Auburn University—$ 81,697,000
9.L.S.U.—————$ 76,499,000
10.Penn State———$ 76,327,000
11.U of Georgia——-$ 75,937,000
12. U of Nebraska—–$ 71,000,000
13.U. of Oklahoma—–$ 69,431,000
14.Texas A&M———-$ 69,413,000
Carolina’s budget last year was $61M. Considering what they spend for bb I don’t think they want to get into a spending war over football coaches.

Just b/c a coach says he’s “staying put” doesn’t mean anything. Look at Rich Rod, or Brian Kelly. Michigan and Notre Dame WERE great programs, but not anymore. I’m not impressed with Rich Rod at all. kelly will be horrible. and he should be for walking out on his players before the biggest game in the history of the program.
Just b/c you win at smaller schools in weaker conferences doesn’t mean you can hang with the big boys. i don’t trust a coach’s word at all unless their current school ups the $$$$

bigdawg, outspending in itself deserves very little merit. I believe UNC receives more donations from alumni than UGa, they just prefer to apply it to education first. That said, I don’t believe UGa has better athletic facilities than UNC, maybe a larger football stadium (not better, and certainly not as attractive), but not better overall facilities. UNC has the bucks to spend on whatever it wants to spend them on. If a coach were to leave UNC for another school, it would not be because UNC could not afford the coach. If you think otherwise, you simply are ill-informed. UNC is a powerful force in both academics and sports.

RD & Dosoyevskiy,
I didn’t start the fire, someone else did by saying that UNC can outspend UGA. BULL! Not on football! 92K seats trumps 60K seats. SEC football trumps ACC football. UGA football > UNC football. As good as his defense has been the past two years UNC has gone 8-5 and 8-4 (so far), which are very good years for them. Team defense in the top team, but offense is below 100. Why stay at a mediocre acc program when you can come to a (soon to be again) top tier sec program, unless you’re in line for HC like Foster is? Davis isn’t going anywhere soon and UNC is not going to keep spending big bucks on the football program.
And as i said to the tech folks, it doesn’t matter how much money you have, it matters how much interest there is in your program. UNC doesn’t care that much about football as UGA does. If we were talking bb it would be the opposite.

More proof we are NOT an elite program. Elite being defined as Top 8. We ARE without question Top 20 and thus deserve a Top 20 DC. We need to be extremely savvy in who we pick as a DC and the bumbling around trying to get those who would be stepping backward is a huge mistake – it leaves is with egg on our faces and makes us look UN-Top 20 like. I can’t recall all the coaches who have turned us down – Mack Brown comes to mind. But each time we make a run that doesn’t work out, recruits are going to ask what’s wrong with UGA. Better take a hard run at the TCU guy.

I always laugh when a “Ga” fan tries to convince everybody how we are not elite. (at least come up with a new term, that one is starting to get pretty worn out) You know, because thats a big deal to Ga fans, afraid that somebody might start thinking we are elite, and they want to make sure to correct that. So, now the fact that a long time DC that we talked to from a program he is probably in line to run one day, didn’t uproot his family endangers us to look like we are a bottom dweller program. Oh, OK. Thanks, and that not at all phony or predictable.
BTW, we havent really hired any football coaches in about 10 years, except for a few assistants that Richt went after and got, so I can understand not remembering ALL the guys who turned us down. Great point about the recruiting though, I know a lot of kids have remarked how they didn’t come here, since we cant keep or get anyone that they like or trust. Been a HUGE problem.

It’s no big surprise to know that most Tech fans didn’t go to school there after reading how stupid most of them are. A 7-5 season is not a sign that a team is on a downswing. Especially after you lose you 3 best offensive players to the NFL. The defense has been a wreck for years now, and it finally got changed. Your team plays in the weakest conference in America as proven by all 15 people who went to that championship game in Tampa. Way to sell out that stadium down there, I think more people went to see the Bucs play the next day. If Tech is so much better than UGA, then why have they only beaten UGA 10 times since the 1960’s? HMMM, sounds like UGA pretty much dominates huh? Go back to pumping gas, buying lottery tickets, and bagging groceries and continue to cheer for that 2nd rate team down at Bobby Dodd. When you start beating us on a regular basis, then you can start talking junk until then shut up and get geared up for another beating next year.

Read today that the Nerds have not even sold 9,000 to the Orange Bowl which they keep talking about. Iowa has already sold over 14,000. How sad is that? UGA would have at least 30,000 there easily.

I was reading on the Nerd blog yesterday and saw so many complaints from Nerd fans that UGA fans were “on their blog” yet I read this one and see a lot of Nerd fans doing the same crap. Interesting. 30-24. Ha ha.

Bud Foster thanks UGA for his raise. Looks like you can dress up the pig but it still stinks…accept it UGA fans, you are not getting a top name. Too many top programs ahead of you looking for coaches. Maybe Mickey Andrews will come save his boy Mark?

Chris- if that was true that means you can still tickets to the Orange Bowl if you had a job and money to buy a plane ticket…never mind, guess you will stay home and watch the Shreveport Shoney’s Bowl on the “big” screen 20″, huh?

I agree bubba- should be a very exciting game. Of course, there is not as much at stake as at the Shreveport Sulfar Smell Bowl, but we Tech fans will just have to make do with a Jan 5 primetime 8 PM game. Good luck, that TAM team put up nearly 40 on Texas, it might get ugly.

There was a time when you could come on these blogs and get some good information about UGA and GT. There was some banter but no name calling, questioning of your mother heritage, or your sexuality. Now the idiot fringe of both schools has taken over and I would bet that not one of them has attended a game or set foot on campus. Has school let out for Christmas or has the adult mentality dropped to zero.

Anyone that uses the term “UGAY” to describe the University of Georgia is doing so to mask his own sexual issues.
Namely:
1.) Going out on dates with blow up dolls
2.) Buying the same blow up doll a Varsity hotdog and being amazed at how she never spills chili on her shirt
3.) Listening to the Doobie Brothers Greatest Hits while on the date and being amazed at how she doesn’t seem to have a feel for the music.
4.) Riding in the HOV lane while on the date and wondering out loud why you still got a ticket for not being a HOV.
5.) Screaming how bout dem jackets to the cop as he pulls away and wonder why he is laughing so hard he can barely keep control of his motorcycle

With FSU finally putting ol’ Bobby out to pasture, Jimbo Fisher will soon have the Seminoles back at the top. Randy Shannon is building a great team at the U, and Butch Davis is making progress at UNC – so enjoy your “elite” status, bugs. You’ll be back at the bottom of the conference and plaing on the blue SMURF-TURF in no time – if you even make a bowl!

CMR has an obvious inflated view of where UGA actually stands in the hierarchy. Why, why, why would Muschamp leave Texas, K Smart leave Bama, or Foster leave VA Tech to become an asst at UGA ??????
You folks are goofy. Just because TN got Monty Kiffin, one of the great
NFL defensive coaches dosen’t mean that UGA is in the postion to select among the great defensive coaches. Who’s next ? Maybe Mac Brown who had awesome defenses at North Carolina or perhaps Kelly who just took the ND head coaching job will change his mind. No one turns down UGA . Right ? Face it, dawgs, the world has changed. Go after the head coach at Lowndes.

I think any hope that Bud Foster would leave VT for UGA was unrealistic. He’s got a great situation in Blacksburg, works for a coach that is well-respected and has a strong team with a lot of promise. A move to UGA would be lateral at best and would seem to have less long-term advantage for him.
