After call from Georgia, Foster gets new deal at Virginia Tech

Bud Foster won’t become Georgia’s new defensive coordinator, but the Bulldogs’ overtures to bring him to Athens will pay off for the highly respected coach.

Hours after acknowledging  contact from UGA about its  job, Foster late Monday agreed to new financial terms to remain at Virginia Tech.

“I’ve been approached for jobs -– the strongest one was Georgia -– and [Virginia] Tech came through with a package that’s going to keep me here,” Foster said Monday night in Blacksburg, Va., according to the Daily Press of Newport News, Va. “I’m pleased with that.

“On the table right now, there’s a nice situation for me to want to continue here and stay here.”

Virginia Tech said terms of the new deal, which had been in the works since the weekend, will not be released until it is finalized. But the key element is an annuity that will pay Foster a  lump sum if he remains at the school another five years.

Foster, 50, is in his 23rd year at Virginia Tech, his 15th as defensive coordinator. He is making $402,000 this year.

Georgia coach Mark Richt is seeking a replacement for Willie Martinez, the defensive coordinator who was fired along with two other UGA defensive coaches on Dec. 2.

Earlier Monday, Foster confirmed through a spokesman that he had been approached by Georgia at some point since Martinez was fired.

“He said he has been contacted,” Virginia Tech associate athletics director Dave Smith said by e-mail in mid-afternoon, “but that’s it.”

Asked at the time if “that’s it” meant talks with Georgia hadn’t progressed beyond initial stages,  Smith replied: “That would be my take, but the only other thing [Foster] said was there really isn’t anything else to say.”

A few hours later, he said he’s staying at Virginia Tech.

Although Richt has made no public comments about Georgia’s search, candidates widely rumored to be on his radar include Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, Kansas State defensive coordinator Vic Koenning and Buffalo Bills defensive-line coach Bob Sanders, among others. Smart, a former Georgia player, has said he is “not looking to go anywhere.”

lIVING LARGE…..I take it from your comment that you have never been to Blacksburg, Va? The most beautiful campus and surroundings East of the Mississippi. At the money Foster is going to make, it matters not where he coaches. He is 50 yrs old and been at Tech 26 years. You didn’t consider the whole senario. He is rounding 3rd and heading for home in an ideal football job. The only place more beautiful for him to go would be Pepperdine U. And they don’t play football.

More proof we are NOT an elite program. Elite being defined as Top 8. We ARE without question Top 20 and thus deserve a Top 20 DC. We need to be extremely savvy in who we pick as a DC and the bumbling around trying to get those who would be stepping backward is a huge mistake – it leaves is with egg on our faces and makes us look UN-Top 20 like. I can’t recall all the coaches who have turned us down – Mack Brown comes to mind. But each time we make a run that doesn’t work out, recruits are going to ask what’s wrong with UGA. Better take a hard run at the TCU guy.

Hey Tech fans stop making comments because about our vacant job. We know your all bitter because you still cannot beat UGA. Paul Johnson called, but Damon Evans told him that we do not like losers from the ACC. Go play in the Orange Bowl knowing that UGA owns you on the football field. Hey Dorks do you think next year after going to the Orange Bowl you will still have to sell partial season tickets.

GT Joe were you even at the game this year. Were you the dork I saw leaving early. What is Tech’s record against UGA for the last 10 year? Just because your envious of UGA, stop posting comments on the Dawg Blawg. Hey maybe next year Tech can compete for a Divison 2 National Championship? That woudl be more of an accomplishment than winning the ACC.

I always laugh when a “Ga” fan tries to convince everybody how we are not elite. (at least come up with a new term, that one is starting to get pretty worn out) You know, because thats a big deal to Ga fans, afraid that somebody might start thinking we are elite, and they want to make sure to correct that. So, now the fact that a long time DC that we talked to from a program he is probably in line to run one day, didn’t uproot his family endangers us to look like we are a bottom dweller program. Oh, OK. Thanks, and that not at all phony or predictable.

BTW, we havent really hired any football coaches in about 10 years, except for a few assistants that Richt went after and got, so I can understand not remembering ALL the guys who turned us down. Great point about the recruiting though, I know a lot of kids have remarked how they didn’t come here, since we cant keep or get anyone that they like or trust. Been a HUGE problem.

Since 1980– 4 SEC Championships, (81, 82, 02, 05), 3 BCS bowl games, many top 10 finishes (#2 in ‘07, #3 in ‘02), consistent 10 win seasons, etc., etc. etc.

What has Tech done since their 1990 “Shared National Championship”? 1 ACC title? Please……It took Tech around 20 years to win another conference title, same with UGA from 1980, except we have averaged an SEC title every 7 years since 1980, while Tech has 1 title since 1990…

Lets compare what the respective schools have done since their last national title, please….

It’s no big surprise to know that most Tech fans didn’t go to school there after reading how stupid most of them are. A 7-5 season is not a sign that a team is on a downswing. Especially after you lose you 3 best offensive players to the NFL. The defense has been a wreck for years now, and it finally got changed. Your team plays in the weakest conference in America as proven by all 15 people who went to that championship game in Tampa. Way to sell out that stadium down there, I think more people went to see the Bucs play the next day. If Tech is so much better than UGA, then why have they only beaten UGA 10 times since the 1960’s? HMMM, sounds like UGA pretty much dominates huh? Go back to pumping gas, buying lottery tickets, and bagging groceries and continue to cheer for that 2nd rate team down at Bobby Dodd. When you start beating us on a regular basis, then you can start talking junk until then shut up and get geared up for another beating next year.

KNelson

December 15th, 2009

Why would he want to leave VT , where his program has done more in the past 20 years more than UGA has? Georgia you think you’re an Elite program but we dont see the top coaches applying for the job. At least basketball is here for you. Well its like watching UGA football, where you win a few more than you lose.
Funny once again to see the cracks at Tennessee and Florida, the 2 teams you fail to have a winning record against. Well for Florida in the past 25 years !

KNelson

December 15th, 2009

Read today that the Nerds have not even sold 9,000 to the Orange Bowl which they keep talking about. Iowa has already sold over 14,000. How sad is that? UGA would have at least 30,000 there easily.

There was a time when you could come on these blogs and get some good information about UGA and GT. There was some banter but no name calling, questioning of your mother heritage, or your sexuality. Now the idiot fringe of both schools has taken over and I would bet that not one of them has attended a game or set foot on campus. Has school let out for Christmas or has the adult mentality dropped to zero.

Anyone that uses the term “UGAY” to describe the University of Georgia is doing so to mask his own sexual issues.

Namely:

1.) Going out on dates with blow up dolls
2.) Buying the same blow up doll a Varsity hotdog and being amazed at how she never spills chili on her shirt
3.) Listening to the Doobie Brothers Greatest Hits while on the date and being amazed at how she doesn’t seem to have a feel for the music.
4.) Riding in the HOV lane while on the date and wondering out loud why you still got a ticket for not being a HOV.
5.) Screaming how bout dem jackets to the cop as he pulls away and wonder why he is laughing so hard he can barely keep control of his motorcycle

With FSU finally putting ol’ Bobby out to pasture, Jimbo Fisher will soon have the Seminoles back at the top. Randy Shannon is building a great team at the U, and Butch Davis is making progress at UNC – so enjoy your “elite” status, bugs. You’ll be back at the bottom of the conference and plaing on the blue SMURF-TURF in no time – if you even make a bowl!
