Bud Foster won’t become Georgia’s new defensive coordinator, but the Bulldogs’ overtures to bring him to Athens will pay off for the highly respected coach.
Hours after acknowledging contact from UGA about its job, Foster late Monday agreed to new financial terms to remain at Virginia Tech.
“I’ve been approached for jobs -– the strongest one was Georgia -– and [Virginia] Tech came through with a package that’s going to keep me here,” Foster said Monday night in Blacksburg, Va., according to the Daily Press of Newport News, Va. “I’m pleased with that.
“On the table right now, there’s a nice situation for me to want to continue here and stay here.”
Virginia Tech said terms of the new deal, which had been in the works since the weekend, will not be released until it is finalized. But the key element is an annuity that will pay Foster a lump sum if he remains at the school another five years.
Foster, 50, is in his 23rd year at Virginia Tech, his 15th as defensive coordinator. He is making $402,000 this year.
Georgia coach Mark Richt is seeking a replacement for Willie Martinez, the defensive coordinator who was fired along with two other UGA defensive coaches on Dec. 2.
Earlier Monday, Foster confirmed through a spokesman that he had been approached by Georgia at some point since Martinez was fired.
“He said he has been contacted,” Virginia Tech associate athletics director Dave Smith said by e-mail in mid-afternoon, “but that’s it.”
Asked at the time if “that’s it” meant talks with Georgia hadn’t progressed beyond initial stages, Smith replied: “That would be my take, but the only other thing [Foster] said was there really isn’t anything else to say.”
A few hours later, he said he’s staying at Virginia Tech.
Although Richt has made no public comments about Georgia’s search, candidates widely rumored to be on his radar include Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, Kansas State defensive coordinator Vic Koenning and Buffalo Bills defensive-line coach Bob Sanders, among others. Smart, a former Georgia player, has said he is “not looking to go anywhere.”

UNC outspend UGA? Ha ha ha. Look at the athletic spending for 2007. Do you see UNC on there?
1.Ohio State———-$109,000,000
2.U of Florida——–$108,000,000
3.U of Texas———-$105,000,000
4.U of Tennessee——$ 95,000,000
5.U of Michigan——-$ 89,000,000
6.U of Wisconsin——$ 83,000,000
7.U of Alabama——–$ 81,946,000
8.Auburn University—$ 81,697,000
9.L.S.U.—————$ 76,499,000
10.Penn State———$ 76,327,000
11.U of Georgia——-$ 75,937,000
12. U of Nebraska—–$ 71,000,000
13.U. of Oklahoma—–$ 69,431,000
14.Texas A&M———-$ 69,413,000
Carolina’s budget last year was $61M. Considering what they spend for bb I don’t think they want to get into a spending war over football coaches.

Just b/c a coach says he’s “staying put” doesn’t mean anything. Look at Rich Rod, or Brian Kelly. Michigan and Notre Dame WERE great programs, but not anymore. I’m not impressed with Rich Rod at all. kelly will be horrible. and he should be for walking out on his players before the biggest game in the history of the program.
Just b/c you win at smaller schools in weaker conferences doesn’t mean you can hang with the big boys. i don’t trust a coach’s word at all unless their current school ups the $$$$

If hiring a DC is all about how much money a school has to spend (and you seem to be trying to make that point in your post directed at the UNC fan) what makes you think that UGA (#11 on your lost) can hire Muschamp from TX (#3) or Smart from ALA (#7)?
Heck – based on your post, UGA will have to hope FLA (#1) isn’t after the same people.

I feel so much better now that I insulted all you redneck, trailer trash, leg humper Georgia fans (especially since most of you are my neighbors). I think it’s really neat-o how you can just put a “y” at the end of UGA and insinuate that that everyone who is a fan of the school is gay. That’s makes me giggle every time I see it. HA! HA!, You’re uGAY!

It is unfortunate to see you confusing language and grammar; unfortunate, but not surprising.
And I’m sure old E.E. “Cummins” would be proud as punch to hear you supporting his writing. Then again, he’d probably be even more happy if you’d spell his name correctly. Cummings.
Now, carry on with your intellectual superiority show.

bigdawg, outspending in itself deserves very little merit. I believe UNC receives more donations from alumni than UGa, they just prefer to apply it to education first. That said, I don’t believe UGa has better athletic facilities than UNC, maybe a larger football stadium (not better, and certainly not as attractive), but not better overall facilities. UNC has the bucks to spend on whatever it wants to spend them on. If a coach were to leave UNC for another school, it would not be because UNC could not afford the coach. If you think otherwise, you simply are ill-informed. UNC is a powerful force in both academics and sports.

GT Joe — he also turned down the Mighty Gators. And FSU. There was never any mention of a job offer from any of those schools so Foster did not turn an offer down. He is just content to stay in the hills of SW Va and beat up on weaker teams in the ACC.

RD & Dosoyevskiy,
I didn’t start the fire, someone else did by saying that UNC can outspend UGA. BULL! Not on football! 92K seats trumps 60K seats. SEC football trumps ACC football. UGA football > UNC football. As good as his defense has been the past two years UNC has gone 8-5 and 8-4 (so far), which are very good years for them. Team defense in the top team, but offense is below 100. Why stay at a mediocre acc program when you can come to a (soon to be again) top tier sec program, unless you’re in line for HC like Foster is? Davis isn’t going anywhere soon and UNC is not going to keep spending big bucks on the football program.
And as i said to the tech folks, it doesn’t matter how much money you have, it matters how much interest there is in your program. UNC doesn’t care that much about football as UGA does. If we were talking bb it would be the opposite.

Actually, GT Joe, he was contacted by Urban Meyer, who at last check, was the CURRENT HC at UF. This has been reported by: Hokies Journal is reporting Bud Foster has agreed to a new deal at Virginia Tech after recently talking with UGA, Florida, and Florida State.

So he was offered by Meyer (and spurrier in 1998, btw). That’s pure SPECULATION. But the FACT is Richt called Foster.
Also, Meyer just offered the job to Tyrone Nix last week, so I guess Foster was his 2nd choice (if at all).
If he turned down FSU and UF, then he would definitely turn down UGA… no one should be surprised.
