After call from Georgia, Foster gets new deal at Virginia Tech
Bud Foster won’t become Georgia’s new defensive coordinator, but the Bulldogs’ overtures to bring him to Athens will pay off for the highly respected coach.
Hours after acknowledging contact from UGA about its job, Foster late Monday agreed to new financial terms to remain at Virginia Tech.
“I’ve been approached for jobs -– the strongest one was Georgia -– and [Virginia] Tech came through with a package that’s going to keep me here,” Foster said Monday night in Blacksburg, Va., according to the Daily Press of Newport News, Va. “I’m pleased with that.
“On the table right now, there’s a nice situation for me to want to continue here and stay here.”
Virginia Tech said terms of the new deal, which had been in the works since the weekend, will not be released until it is finalized. But the key element is an annuity that will pay Foster a lump sum if he remains at the school another five years.
Foster, 50, is in his 23rd year at Virginia Tech, his 15th as defensive coordinator. He is making $402,000 this year.
Georgia coach Mark Richt is seeking a replacement for Willie Martinez, the defensive coordinator who was fired along with two other UGA defensive coaches on Dec. 2.
Earlier Monday, Foster confirmed through a spokesman that he had been approached by Georgia at some point since Martinez was fired.
“He said he has been contacted,” Virginia Tech associate athletics director Dave Smith said by e-mail in mid-afternoon, “but that’s it.”
Asked at the time if “that’s it” meant talks with Georgia hadn’t progressed beyond initial stages, Smith replied: “That would be my take, but the only other thing [Foster] said was there really isn’t anything else to say.”
A few hours later, he said he’s staying at Virginia Tech.
Although Richt has made no public comments about Georgia’s search, candidates widely rumored to be on his radar include Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, Kansas State defensive coordinator Vic Koenning and Buffalo Bills defensive-line coach Bob Sanders, among others. Smart, a former Georgia player, has said he is “not looking to go anywhere.”

Predictions: Georgia will have a Defensive Coordinator named, at the latest, following the National Championship game…Tech will have its, vaunted, option offense handled enough to allow a lame Iowa bunch to win that Orange Bowl game. Of course, nobody will know, or care (except the two teams fans, of course) about it until they watch ESPN’s Bowl recap show…I will take up a collection to pay for any Tech fans that’ll stay at the EPIC Hotel while they’re in Miami, on the condition that they drink the water…UT fans that are proud of Lame Lane’s approach to coaching in the SEC will have a lot of crow to eat in a year or two – after Daddy’s had enough, his wife will have joined the BB coach’s ex-wife in that company named ‘Alimony, LLC’ and the vol-flirtteam ‘lady’ decides to have the pronunciation of her last name rhyme with the thing that Angels play rather than the stuff the stadium custodial crew has to clean up in the UT student section, and UT grads will have replaced Arkansas fans in the ‘most baffling. category – e.g., ‘I can’t believe those UT fans, they’ve got Lane Kiffin as a head football coach and are proud of it…as opposed to those that have a pig for a mascot and are…well, you get it blanket-head.

I’ve secretly moved our entire academic budget to the athletics department, so the money’s there. In college coaching you leave your job for a better job. And coaching the defense at Va Tech is a better job than coaching defense at UGA. Well… let’s say it’s not a considerable step up. Plain and simple.

As of last Thursday, Tech has sold less than 9,000 of its 17,500-ticket allotment. Each ticket is $125 and can be purchased at Tech’s Web site. In comparison, Iowa reports its has sold 14,000.

Mighty strange you can still get CLUB LEVEL seats at the orange bowl. I thought that was a major bowl? Surely you tech fans would buy all of the tickets to the game, right? I mean, hardly any of you went to the acc chumpionship game, so you have to have money left, right? I fully expect to read an announcement that tech had to return some of the bowl tickets!!

Withers knows he’s still second fiddle to the bb team. Come on to UGA where football is king!! Besides, why would he stay at a school where they can’t score any points? Their offense is terrible! They would have won the acc if it wasn’t for their offense. Talk all you want to about Bobo, but even Rivals.com has him ranked in the top 15.
Course, Withers is a Charlotte native, so that might keep him where he is.
Course i forgot, someone mentioned days ago about the recruiter at UNC (John Blake). He’s also a very good defensive coach. I”m sure he’d like to be recruiting coordinator AND DC. Either one of those would be good catches. Seem very good at spotting talent AND getting the most out of it.
Must suck when your team goes 11-2, wins the conf champ., goes to a BCS bowl, and NONE OF THE FANS SHOW UP!! Way to go bumblebees…. Why don’t you ask your UGA bosses for a raise?

Several schools have tried that Bud Foster 4-4 defense, with the hybrid LBs, and dumped it after a year. He seems to have it down to a science, but its not the next best thing by any means. Obviously every person that Richt “talks” to is not going to be the next DC at UGA.

Foster wasn’t leaving VT. Richt and UGA did the right thing to call him, but he isn’t leaving. He and Beamer are like Andrews/Bowden. I don’t think he’d go even for a HC job. Some guys are just not meant to be HC’s and maybe he knows it.
It would be nice to have someone in place before Christmas. Being down 3 coaches can’t be helping recruiting, even if the other coaches are putting in triple the miles.

Why would Bud leave Va Tech which has about a 75% chance of a BCS game every year to go to some middle of the road SEC team as the DC? Now if you were talking about taking Richt’s place I could see that. But a lateral to uga? Makes no sense at all.

Bud Foster was never going to UGA.He has said repeatedly over the last few years that he would only leave for a head coaching job.With the 5 year deal,it may just work out that Beamer retires around that time and Foster becomes head coach.He is an outstanding DC with VT defenses that,other than this season,consistently rank in the Top 10.
