Atkins, the senior defensive tackle who finished his UGA career strong, was named the Most Valuable Defensive Player.

And sophomore punter  Butler and sophomore placekicker Walsh, both models of consistency all season, were named the Most Valuable Special Teams Players.

– Senior quarterback Joe Cox was named the team’s permanent overall captain.

– Senior wide receiver Michael Moore was named the offensive captain, senior defensive tackle Jeff Owens and Curran the defensive co-captains and senior Prince Miller the special-teams captain.

– Moore won the Leon Farmer Award for dedication to the strength and conditioning program.

– Most Improved Player awards went to sophomore tight end Aron White for the offense, junior safety Reshad Jones for the defense and sophomore cornerback Brandon Boykin for special teams.

– Newcomer of the Year awards went to redshirt freshman wide receiver Tavarres King and freshman tailback Washaun Ealey on offense; redshirt freshman safety Bacarri Rambo and freshman tackle Abry Jones on defense; and freshman defensive backs Branden Smith and Shawn Williams on special teams.

– Winners of the Outstanding Scout Team Awards were junior tight end Derek Rich and freshman center Ben Reynolds on offense; freshman end Reuben Faloughi and freshman tackle Kwame Geathers on defense; and freshman linebackers Cameron Allen and Jackson Griffeth on special teams.

Richt will let the new DC have input on the hiring of the new DE, LB and SE coaches. He will wait until after the bowl season to try to land a BCS coordinator like Smart. If he can not get one of them then he will go with his second option (which is probably Rodney).

Yes, CMR will certainly wait until after bowls to try to land the best DC hire he possibly can, but in my opinion he has grown alot amid the WM debacle. I agree Rodney Garner deserves much praise and mabe a raise but I do not think Ritch will hire him as DC. My guess is if Smart does not take the job, and I do think we have a shot at him , it will probubly be Steele from SC. Dude is tough and has had huge success over the past several years there.Just think about it ,with Spurier and all the O prowess SC has had to work with ,the strength of that South Carolina team has been its defense. As much as I like Rennie, dont think he will go pro until after next year. He would be 5 or 6 round material at best and I think he will realize that and stick around for one more big year, mabe up his stock if he leads the SEC in tackles 2 years in a row.

Can we get Dave OB to write an article about the search for a DC? Is he the only acyaul sports reporter this rag has? Could we possibly trade Tucker and Bill King to the Braves for him along with promises by Shultz and Bradley to never write a word about UGA again?

As much as I would love to have Kirby back in Athens, I just don’t think he would. If he stays at Bama, he’ll have head coaching offers by possibly next year. Who knows though. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Red Dog, Kevin Steele is the DC at Clemson. Ellis Johnson is the DC at South Carolina.

I admit I don’t know who the new DC will be. I’m not sure anyone, even CMR, knows yet. My guess is the job is Kirby Smart’s if he wants it, but I still have trouble seeing him leaving Alabama for another DC job. I do think Vic Koenning, the former Clemson DC now at Kansas State, is a possibility. The Bud Foster rumors are tantalizing, although a lot of schools have tried and failed to hire him away from Virginia Tech. I thought Rodney Garner’s comments on Saturday were interesting.

I suspect the deal is already done, whoever it may be or is in the works. I suspect RIcht has the guy identified. Depending on the situation professional courtesy dictates not announcing a hire until after the team losing the coach finishes his season. In the case of Kirby Smart, no way it gets announced until after the NC game. Recruiting is not a concern in this case. RIcht, Garner, and Bobo will assure the D commits that an outstanding guy is coming onboard and all will be well. Any other high profile recruits can be dealt with the same way and most of them will be late commits anyway, so the cat will be out of the bag by the time they are ready to commit. Whoever it is will be a very good hire.

exNFLplayer

Johnny if Smart is the guy Richt already has his answer. If not Richt isn’t going to sit on his hands and let other outstanding candidates fall through the cracks. Kirby Smart is good but in actuality there are numerous guys that are probably better, more experienced, and have a lot more seat time in the position. I tend to lean toward the guys that have proven it time and time again. And this young team might just need an older no nonsense fundamentals guy. Not that Smart doesn’t bring a hell of a lot to the table.

Did any of you watch the 30 for 30 special on ESPN last night where the Miami football team was discussed?

Being the NCAA hearing Miami admit to so many rules violations on TV by players and coaches, the National Championships awarded to the University of Miami during the time of these rule violations should/ shall be revoked.

The ability for these players to qualify academically and maintain GPA averages to be a student athelete is questionable. All of this is due to the 30 for 30 special on ESPN.

Money contributed by 2 Live Crew for the Hit Man List as well as drinks, meals, clothing, and cash pay out to players of the U football team should/ shall place the U on probation for ten (10) years with no eligibility to particiipate in any BCS or other bowl appearances.

This was a blatant display of cheating and rules violations to the world on television with no regard for what college atheletics are to represent!

You are right to question Smart. It is possible that he is one of the top 10 DC’s in the country. But it is also possible that he is just a decent DC who’s good at stepping out of the way when Saban is working with the defense. We really don’t know for sure.

Oh, and one more thing. Under no circumstances does Rennie Curran have any business entering the ‘10 Draft. No doubt he is a DGD, but he isn’t ready for the NFL. I question whether he will ever be quite frankly. Being Georgia’s best defender the past two seasons is kind of like being the best QB in the WAC. I mean let’s keep it real here. If we had any other LBs that were worth a crap they would be making some of those tackles for him. It wouldn’t be all on his shoulders. You often get the feeling that Rennie is the only thing in the way of the offense and a 50 yard gain. That’s a credit to him of course. He should stay another year. I don’t think he would go very high in ‘10.

Thanks.

When Richt was calling offensive plays, the Dawgs didn’t score too many points. They usually won with outstanding DEFENSE. If we’d had Richt calling the plays the last few years, our defense still would’ve been just as weak, and we wouldn’t have won any more games than we did.

I think the offer is out there for Kirby Smart and I think its close to a done deal. FSU immediately went away from Kirby and went else where. I think he will come to UGA for about a 1 million contract (this is what he is worth now) and then will stay a few seasons and move on to a HC job. If you noticed, all of the other teams are hiring people now and you are not hearing nothing about UGA. Don’t let Mark Richt and Damon Evans fool you, they have been looking for one since the Florida game and Bobo and Kirby are great friends (you know this has already been talking about). I think something is already done, because there hasn’t been any reports of UGA talking to people. Some of this would have already gotton out. You will get a report that UGA has asked to speak to Kirby after the NC game and then a few days later it could come out that he is hired.

Bob,
When one player has a huge number of tackles, that often indicates that the other guys around him aren’t very good. I agree with you there. (Remember when a UGA safety always had about 5 billion tackles a few years ago, when our linebacker corps was weak?) That’s why the NFL scouts watch film to determine a guy’s ability. I think Rennie’s film looks pretty awesome. He gets to the ball quickly, and guys don’t break his tackles. There’s also something to be said for keeping out of trouble while all the players around you are constantly drawing penalty flags.

Johnny DangerDawg

Bull Pup,
Ha! No, I am a Richt supporter! But I also support his decision to let somebody else call the plays. If Saban micromanages every aspect of his team and his coordinators have zero control over anything (which I doubt), congratulations to him because it’s working. However, there’s more than one way to win in college football. When Mark Richt was calling the plays at FSU, Bobby Bowden didn’t have trouble producing Top 5 teams every year. Delegating can produce championships too.

I don’t think you off base on the comment about the Alabama success being more Saban than Kirby but Kirby has been in his system long enough to learn that great D and has because a great D coach. It would be immediate success for the UGA D.

You are also right about the silence, to avoid a distraction to our new DC’s present team the hire will not be announced until after the NC game! That means it’s either Muschamp or Smart and I would be willing to bet my money on Kirby! Everybody hatin on The “U” should take a chill pill. Dynasties come and go in CF. How those dynasties get built may not always be common knowledge. BUT, do you think the Notre Dames, Oklahomas, Nebraskas, USCs, etc… are squeaky clean. There’s many of you out there now questioning the antics at Florida, which is the closest to a present day dynasty. When The “U” went on their run to the top, WHITE America didn’t like it (and I suspect that’s who most of the complainers are on this blog), because the team was built with a lot of severely deprived, inner-city kids. To WHITE America, these were little thugs and hoodlums who were flamboyant and talked trash in order to intimidate their opponents. These kids were hungry for something other than poverty and deprivation…..football gave it to them. They took advantage of it, instead of succumbing to the elements of their surroundings at home. The “U” was a fledgling program facing extinction when that run started in ‘83-’84. The snowball built up a lot of momentum but if everyone remembers correctly, lost that momentum around ‘03-’04 when the school was hit with violations resulting in scholarship reductions. All I’m saying is that the Dynasty at Miami had distasteful occurrences just as those that you don’t necessarily read about at the schools of the other ones.

We all have our wish list…I agree KS is somewhat unproven and do wonder how much os his success is a result of Saban’s hands on coaching of the UA defense.
I hope I am wrong but I think when all this is done we lose CRG! And he is a GREAT recruiter! Maybe a title and a hefty, deserved raise will sooth the wounds!

Whether we like it or not, as to pay for assistant coaches and coordinators, Ala. and UT have raised the bar…we can either ante up or settle for what DE will pay! Few….very few…athletic departments in the land are as well off financially as UGA….Evans has to step up to the plate…money cant be an object with the hire!

IF it is not a done deal…and IF our target ( I think there is a 1a and 1b) turns us down…it could get ugle and really not only hurt the program but really hurt recruiting for this incoming class! If you doubt that…look at the committments FSU got last week after anouncing Stoops hiring!

Sounds like jealousy to me?

Bottom line: I would not consider it a lateral move if he makes more money by coming to UGA. Smart could use the offer as leverage to receive a bigger paycheck at Alabama if Saban counters but I believe he will show much better character than to pull that kind of stunt.

Ex Georgia Fan, aaahhhh that is so not true. Our best player was recruited by no one. I am with the guy that said Muschamp is over rated. I can’t remember him doing anything special against us or UF at LSU. Texas doesn’t play great defense. He’s a loud mouth if that helps any. I think his dad is a much better coach than Will.

Kirby Smart hasn’t proven anything to me. Obviously we THINK that Saban controls that D and maybe he does. Possibly Kirby has learned enough? I sincerely believe the key to shutting UF down in the championship game was UF poor play selection/ballance/mix that was the exact opposite of what they did all year. More on the UF coaches than the AL coaches.

A great coach isn’t going to solve all the problems on D. It is just going to take time to get a team full of juniors and seniors. It’s so funny that UT pays so Coach Monte so much and he is so well respected when he invented the basic D that UGA fans hated CWM for implementing. It takes players. Maybe we didn’t get the best players or didn’t evaluate them properly, but anyone with the first bit of football knowledge can see that other teams have more talented players, especially mentally.

To all you dawg fans who like to tell us how you fill them thar’ stadiums better than us, use your mutt-heads. Georgia puts more people in their stadium than Tech because there are more Georgia fans than there are Tech fans. Duh! Or maybe you knew that already, but were still somehow proud. China has more people than us, so should we be jealous? I have a large family, so my family reunions are better attended than my buddy’s who has a smaller family. Should I razz him about that? Ony dumb-dawg mentality would make me do so.

Look, you guys are 7-5 and headed for Shreveport to play a 6-6 team. I know times are bad, but surely you can do better than declaring how proud you are to be one small element assimilated into a huge hunkering mass of nose-picking, woofing rednecks. Why not dust off that old “Lindsay Scott-Lindsay Scott” cassette and relive your faded days of short-lived glory. Just get your fans to sell out your bowl game. Your first BCS bowl game ever and tickets are still for sale. Worst UGA team in 12 to 15 years and we still won 30-24. Tech had 2 weeks to get ready. UGA won and still fired three coaches. Thats the difference in the two programs UGA doesnt wait 7 years to fire coaches like like Tech does. Your coach is overrated and so is your team. CPJ will have to get a bigger D-line if he wants to play with the Big boys. #71 opened big holes all night against Tech.

But thanks again for more muttheaded thinking. You barely beat Tech when our QB was injured, and then you tell me how Tech sucks. Orange Bowl is the worst rated dump every year, and Miami reminds us all of the Tech campus riddled with CRIME.

Your male asian student body is larger than your women student body percentage.

Your APR is worse than UGA in football.

You LOST 30-24.

And, you spend your days in here trying to tell us, we cannot say this in reply to your B.S. of how great Tech is.

Your retort to Tech’s Official NCAA Strength of Schedule of Number 51 is that Jeff Sagarin says Tech played a more reasonable SoS; but the truth is that you played 6 games against teams not even in a bowl game.

6.

And, that Jeff Sagarin says that the 1 team all season long that is a ranked team that Tech beat is RANKED AHEAD OF TECH in the Jeff Sagarin BCS Poll, Virginia Tech.

Tech, you LOST to an unranked 7-5 team at your house, 24-30.

If this game were about Award Winners, UGA would be great with only 3 others having more players in the NFL than UGA.

But, it is not about Award Winners.

So, how are we actually doing ?

Afraid to ask ?

Lie to yourself about the answer ?

The Coach Richt Era ?

Has it been Boom ?

Is it Bust ?

How do you personally put up with the arrests and suspensions during the entire Coach Richt Era ?

Is Brian VanGorder a Great Falcons Defensive Coordinator, or not ?

Is Joe Cox really all we have at QB ?

How is that we have to yank the Redshirt off Washaun Ealey in the third quarter of the 5th game ?

Why was Knowshon Moreno Redshirted ?

Did we really not know how good Knowshon is ?

4 parts to college football.

How would you rate UGA’s Coaching and I’m not talking Defense.

How would you rate UGA’s Offense under Coach Richt and now Mike Bobo ?

How would you rate UGA’s Special Teams Kick-offs, Punt Returns and Kick-Off Returns ?

How would you rate the Recruiting of UGA’s Defensive Players ?

Let’s look at just how good we really are, and have been, shall we ?

In a season when we are in fact the

NCAA Number 78 Passing Offense

NCAA Number 73 Total Offense

NCAA Number 41 in Punt Returns

NCAA Number 76 in Kick-Off Returns

NCAA Number 119 in Turnover Margin

NCAA Number 117 in Penalties

We just FIRED THE ENTIRE DEFENSIVE COACHING STAFF, except for the Recruiting Coordinator.

We do not have and have not had an Offense, and this is nothing new this year.

We are a sorry lot on Special Teams, outside our Kickers.

We are an Undisciplined Group of Players on and off the field with 9 years now of Arrests and Suspensions. You can belittle this and say oh it’s only driving a scooter without a license, etc. but the facts remain our players are ARRESTED and SUSPENDED for what you write off as insignificant.

And, we do the same on the field as we do off the field.

It is a Culture.

3-17 last 20 against Florida. Do you concede that we cannot get out of our own Division of our own Conference ? Do you concede this ?

Do you know how we have faired against what actually were Final AP Poll Top 25 teams in the Coach Richt Era ?

Do you ?

18-20, in case you want the breakdown.

And, another 6 LOSSES to teams NOT RANKED IN THE FINAL AP POLL TOP 25.

We are not an Elite Football Program.

We should be.

We are The University of a State, only 3 others of which actually send more high school football players to the NFL than we do. California, Florida and Texas send more to the NFL than the State of Georgia does; that’s it.

5 others have higher attendance.

3 others have more in the NFL than we.

So, why are we 18-20 against Final AP Poll Top 25 teams in 9 years with another 6 Losses to teams not even ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 25 ?

Because of the Defensive Coaches fired by Coach Richt 3 weeks ago now ?

While we see all These Bulldogs on All These Other Program’s Coaching Staffs, what coach on Coach Richt Coaching Staff has anyone seeking him ? Go ahead, you can say it. Coach Richt, CEO, has NEVER had a good coach on his entire staff, ever coaching any position.

How many coaches on this “coaching staff” of Coach Richt today, have ever coached 1 day in the NFL ?

Answer is -0-.

We cannot evaluate talent, even when handed it.

We cannot teach discipline, to save our souls.

We cannot coach any aspect of the game.

We do not make good decisions.

We are not Elite. We averaged Number 14 in the Final AP Poll the previous dozen years, starting 1997; is that Elite ? Hardly, now we have our 1st Team since 1996 that is NOT RANKED in the Final AP Poll.

Tell me the 1 Big Bowl Game, just 1 mind you, that UGA got to play on the National Stage in 9 years now ?

5-Loss Florida State ? That was a Big Bowl Game for Elite Georgia ?

2005 Sugar after we Lost to Florida and Auburn, beat LSU and coached poorly to lose to West Virginia ?

2006 in the Peach Bowl against Number 19 Virginia Tech ?

2007 when we actually beat Florida & Auburn (Lost to vols) ? Number 19 again, Hawaii, this time. That’s an Elite Team in a Bowl Game we showed our stuff against ? Number 19 Hawaii ?

2008 last year after we Lost to Alabama, Florida and Georgia Tech ? Michigan State is an Elite Team in a Bowl Game we got to show our stuff against ?

Who are you trying to fool ?

This year, we had -0 offense against Oklahoma State and Lost, Lost LSU on Special Teams Kick-Off Return, destroyed by Florida when we yanked our Starting QB, Beat Tech and Lost to the vols. 6-6 Texas A&M is an Elite Team we are going to show our stuff against ?

We need to do a lot more than get rid of 3 defensive coaches.

Right ?

Kirby Smart will probably sit tight until he gets hired as a head coach in a year or two. His star is rising too fast. If he had a 4 or 5 year timetable for head coaching, a move back home would be more likely.

Under present circumstances, I don’t think Garner will get the position. If the previous DC had left voluntarily (like Van Gorder’s departure), it would be a different story, but right now the need is for somebody fresh to come in. There are a lot of good coaches out there, and I imagine a lot who would like to work for Richt. Maybe if we do get a temporary guy this time who moves on to the NFL or something in a couple years, Garner would be next.

I love the GT fan who keeps blogging about the $14 million bowl they are going to. Does he think that GT is getting all that? Evidently, he is over 60 years old, because he remembers Bobby Dodd’s master plan when he got out of the SEC. Dodd wanted GT to be the ND of the South and keep all the money for himself. We(at least the Dawg fans) know how that turned out!!!

Just for the sake of this discussion, let’s look at the bowl games GT has been to in the last 10 years.
‘00—Peach(L)
‘01—Seattle(W)
‘02—Silicon Valley(L)
‘03—Humanitarian(W)
‘04—Champs(W)
‘05—Emerald Nut(L)

‘07—Humanitarian(L) (Can’t get enough of that blue turf)
‘08—Chick Fil-A (L) (Lost to another 7-5 SEC team)
‘09—Orange—Congratulations to ACC Champs!!

I would be willing to bet that the pay out for the 9 bowl games before this year did not add up to $14 million. But when you beat the Dawgs once in EIGHT years this is really exciting to go to a big bowl once in 42 years. Enjoy and have fun in Miami.

There is NO WAY that Richt is going to go into the end of Bowl season not knowing who his DC is. We might not know. Weeks before recruiting, and “hoping” to get somebody that was in a BCS bowl? (although that’s a pretty shallow criteria) Hoping he is isnt scrambling, to settle for whomever is left? I doubt that. Might as well have just gone with what he had and tweeked a few things.

Not to mention they are going to need to give thier old boss as much time as possible to replace him. Now, all the position coaches might not fall into place till later, but you can bet Richt knows without a doubt who it is long before the Final bowlgame is played. That would be a terribly negative statement on his program to not have that settled, in “hopes” of somebody.

I believe we all all too focused on the “name”. We should be looking at who brings a new style. And specualte who that would be. Obviously he isn’t going to stick with the hard-core 4-3, cover 2 zone. My guess is that he has come to the conclusion that if you dont have a star at DE, which appearantly is not a given, it’s too vulnerable, and is looking to change up the system. Meet the new guy, same as the old guy, lets see if he can “motivate” better……..nahh.

Maybe you’ll live long enough to see them play in another one, that is if you live to be 100!!!! On the subject of coaches, in my lifetime, UGA has only had 5 head football coaches. You’d blow up your little calculator counting all of yours!

1-800-TECH-TIX: Right on! I’m sure there’s gonna be PLENTY of tickets available for Techies to their bowl. To my knowledge, Georgia has NEVER taken out full page ads in the AJC attempting to sell tickets to their games like Tech does. Maybe it’s because WE don’t have to! I’m sure even though this season didn’t turn out the way we all hoped it would, Georgia fans will still show up for the Independence Bowl anyway.

but at least we beat our rivals!!! Now I have a reason to keep supporting a school for no reason other than the fact that I understand what most of the majors there are about

We’ll have an easier chance of finding Bin Laden at the Orange Bowl among 20,000 nerds than in the hills of Afghanistan.

I am a Georgia grad and I have seen the Dawgs beat GIT so many times since 1964 that I cannot count them, so I have submitted my application as DC. I will work for one dollar a year. You’re welcome.
