If you want to apply for Willie Martinez’s old position at the University of Georgia, the job posting number is 20091296.
The UGA athletics department has publicly posted four job openings this week -– one for a groundskeeper (duties include “assist with daily maintenance of playing surface at various athletic facilities, including mowing and irrigation”) and three for assistant football coaches.
Obviously the coaching jobs aren’t going to go to members of the public who learn of them by perusing the postings on the UGA human resources’ Web site. But the jobs are required to be publicly posted nevertheless, and you might get a kick out of the details contained in the postings. . . .
The job summary for Martinez’s former position: “Serve as Football Defensive Coordinator, including recruiting; defensive staff goals, charts, statistics, practice schedules, staff meetings; supervising graduate assistants and student managers; guiding and encouraging students to reach and complete graduation.”
Required education and experience, according to the job posting, include a BA degree (Masters “preferred”) and extensive experience as a defensive coach/coordinator, “preferably in Division I.”
Under the category “physical demands” of the job, there’s this: “Standing for long periods of time.”
The posting says 45 percent of the job holder’s time will be spent on defensive-coordinator duties, 30 percent on recruiting, 20 percent on supervising graduate assistants and student managers and 5 percent on other duties assigned by the head coach.
Salary ranges for the three coaching jobs were not specified.
The jobs were posted Tuesday. According to the UGA human resources Website, posted jobs are open for a minimum of five business days before being filled.

Crime on and around campus is something that most students are aware of on some level. For most, though, their experiences with crime will be limited to what they see in television dramas and a heart-pumping scene or two in an action movie.
Others, though, have had a more tangible experience with crime. One Tech student who was recently accosted in the Home Park area spoke with the Technique about his experience. As he wished to remain anonymous, he will be referred to as John Smith for the purposes of this article.
Smith said the event began on the way home from a trip to the BP station around eleven at night. “A friend and I went to the BP station, and when we were coming back, a car pulled up next to us…” said Smith. He says the car was a white or silver sedan, but that neither he nor his friend got a good look at the license plate.
“The passenger door opened, and the passenger showed us a gun. We weren’t exactly sure what was going on, but he pushed my friend and explained what was happening,” said Smith.
According to Smith, the passenger was a black male with short black hair who appeared to be in his late twenties. They didn’t get a good look at the driver.
Smith says one reason for the confusion was the weapon’s size. “It was so small I didn’t realize it was a gun at first…it fit entirely in his hand.”
After the robber demanded the pair’s wallets, Smith moved to comply with the request but was stopped.
“I reached for my wallet in my backpack, and he told me to show him my hands and took my backpack,” said Smith.
Smith said he and his friend waited until the robbers left the area before calling 911. “We waited until he drove away. Once they were out of sight…we called the police. We told the 911 operator we had just been robbed at gunpoint. The police response time was very quick; one said he was one block in one direction, the other one and a half in the opposite direction,” said Smith.
“They questioned us there…they took our statements several times. I was talking to detectives for a few days afterwards. They would call every so often and give me updates about the case,” said Smith. No new leads have been found in the case.
According to Smith, the police said there were several security cameras in the area, but none were positioned to get a good look at the car or its occupants.
Smith said this was not his first experience with crime in Home Park. Soon after moving into the area, several cars on his street were broken into, and his neighbor’s car was stolen. His neighbor’s vehicle was returned later that evening, as a police officer found a man driving it in a nearby area.
The GTPD was contacted about crime in the Home Park area, but didn’t want to comment on another agency’s jurisdiction. Home Park falls in Atlanta Police Zone 5, and the Technique was referred to the APD, but at the time of press no official word had been received from the APD.
The GTPD did, however, offer general advice on how students could protect themselves.
Ian Mayberry, an officer in the GTPD and the initial point of contact, said, “What I can provide is the information on safe travel to and from campus, including [using the] Stingerette service and not walking late at night, not walking alone, etc.”
More safety tips can be found online at the GTPD web site. Most are focused on two areas: how to remain in safe areas and how to deflect criminals’ interest by making yourself into a more difficult and less valuable target.
Parking in well-lit areas and avoiding stairwells in remote areas of a building are examples of the former. Keeping valuables hidden, not walking or working alone at night and avoiding using ATMs after dark are examples of the latter. The GTPD website also offers weekly breakdowns of crimes on campus, but, again, due to Home Park being out of their jurisdiction, happenings there are mostly excluded from the reports.
A document in the Parent’s section of the Student Affairs site called “Take the Time, Prevent the Crime” lists several other tips and important facts, including a reminder that the GTPD’s jurisdiction ends 500 yards off-campus, stats on the size and resources of the GTPD and several safety tips similar to those available on the GTPD’s site.

Atlanta Police Department Chief Richard Pennington announced plans to place four more police officers on and around Tech campus. The announcement was made on Tuesday Oct. 13 at a City Hall press conference following a string of violent crime around both the Tech campus as well as the Atlanta University Center (AUC).
On Friday Oct. 2 at 12:15 a.m. two Tech students were robbed at gunpoint in Home Park. The students were walking on Hemphill between 10th and 14th Street when two men approached them on foot. Both men were described as black males around five feet nine inches tall. One of the two men drew a gun and demanded the students’ belongings. After the robbery, both men fled the scene in a black vehicle headed northbound. This crime was followed by a second similar robbery just nine days later.
On Oct. 11 at approximately 11:30 p.m. two more Tech students were robbed at gunpoint in Home Park. The students were walking on Ethel Street when a man exited the passenger side of a light-colored sedan. The man, who was described by one of the victims as a black male about five foot eight inches tall wearing baggy clothes, was armed. He drew a handgun on the two students and demanded their belongings. After the students turned over their things the perpetrator fled the scene heading north. Both of the Home Park robberies are being handled by the Atlanta Police Department.
While no students were harmed in either confrontation in Home Park, not all student-related crime in the city has ended without violence. Last May Tech student Patrick Whaley was shot in the parking deck of the Tivoli Tenside apartment buildings near campus. Three men were sentenced on Oct. 13 for the crime of shooting Whaley as well as the kidnapping of Georgia State student Carsten Singh. The shooter, Robert Hodge, was sentenced to 30 years incarceration while his accomplices DeAngelo Love and Maurice Brown were both sentenced to 25 years.
More recently a Morehouse student was shot Tuesday Oct. 13 at 1 a.m. while walking home from the campus library. The student has since been released from Grady Memorial Hospital after treatment for a gunshot wound to the arm.
“Some of these areas are still not safe at that time of the morning,” Pennington said at Tuesday’s press conference. “I think [the students] have become easy targets for some of the criminals.”
The four new officers will be assigned to patrol between 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. and will most likely be compensated for overtime. The four officers will be complemented by four officers patrolling the AUC campus as well as a number of undercover officers who will likely pose as students btoh on and around campus. There was no mention of increased patrol near the Georgia State campus.
“It’s going to be a two-pronged approach, one is high visibility and one is going to be an undercover approach,” said assistant police chief Alan Dreher at the press conference.
“We are thankful for the additional support. In the past when the APD has increased presence in Home Park there was a corresponding decrease in criminal activity,” said Home Park Community Improvement Association (HPCIA) President Nelson Burke. “[Late hours kept by Tech students] has a lot to do with in increase in crime in Home Park. Most of the crimes are happening between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.”
The HPCIA has offered a board position to Student Government Association to increase communication.
Closer to home, the Georgia Tech Police Department released their crime statistics last week, including tips for both personal and property safety as well as statistics on crime between 2006 and 2008. The report indicated that 2,110 criminal offenses have been reported on campus during the three-year period. Of those crimes 2,091 were burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft or robbery. There was a clear increase in crime between 2007 and 2008. In 2007 the annual crime total reported to the GTPD was 626, while 763 crimes were reported in 2008.
While only three cases of aggravated assault were reported in 2008 according to the crime summary released, there was a decrease from the six assaults in 2007.
While data from 2009 was not included, police.gatech.edu does report that there had been 372 crimes reported between Jan. and July of 2009, an average of approximately 53 crimes per month. When compared to the three years prior, which averaged approximately 58 crimes per month, there appears to have been a slight decrease in overall number of crimes reported to the GTPD. According to police.gatech.edu there were eight reported aggravated assaults in 2008, indicating an increase in reports of violent crime.

Georgia Tech leads the pack, but this is probably one contest where the midtown university wishes it didn’t place so high.
According to the AJC story: After several months of high-profile crimes on or near downtown college campuses, FBI statistics for 2008 released on Monday show that the violence is nothing new.
Georgia Tech police reported 21 violent crimes last year, more than any of the other 19 Georgia college and university police departments reporting crime numbers to the FBI. Tech was followed closely by Clark Atlanta University, which reported 19 violent crimes, and Georgia State University, which reported 16.
Not sure what to say to students except pay attention and walk in groups.
Anyone else have a better idea?

Not to change the subject but did anyone see Terrance Moore’s aol article on Tiger. He blew his horn all over his face about his article that got him on Opra that exclaimed from the mountain tops “Get used to it Tiger your black” after Tiger claimed he was Cablinasian. The funniest part of the article is TM pointed out that is why Tiger is not getting support from the black community (Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson) like Michael Vick and OJ Simpson. How stupid can Tiger be?

I got jumped between Sky’s and downtown once pretty bad. Seriously, this happens all the time and to suggest Athens is some sort of idyllic New England town compared to Tech is a huge stretch. Gee, you think that maybe crime might be higher in an inner city? You think? Did you spend a lot of time coming up with this crap? My daughter goes to Georgia State and it’s the same thing there, if not worse. I live in Tucker and my son went to UGA. It so happens that my son was involved in 3 auto accidents in and around Athens before he graduated in 2004. My daughter has never been involved in an auto accident while attending school despite the aggressive traffic in the Atlanta area. Does that mean I should conclude that UGA students in general have more accidents than Atlanta area students? Of course not, but you probably would. I could care less about Tech, which is what you are so obviously obsessed about, but your logic is simply twisted as much as your opinion. And another thing, do you have a life? Son, your posts are so long I don’t even try to read through most of them.

You nadlickers are so delusional it’s not even funny. Every year you talk $hit and then you get your a$$ handed to you. If 49-10 in 2008 wasn’t enough you came back for more this year… 41-17, which was an improvement… NOT! Gators eat Dawg meat every year. Dawgs = Gator Bait!
