There was no answer to the big question –- call it The Willie Martinez Question -– but there were some interesting comments on Mark Richt’s weekly radio call-in show Monday night.
If you missed it:
– The first question, not surprisingly, was about any plans for changing coordinators or other assistant coaches.
Richt’s reply: “I’m not going to make any comment about anything like that. I think people think that just because we need to get better or make some kind of change — they think it always involves changing of people, too. And that’s not always necessarily true. But, you know, we’re going to get things back on track, I can promise you that.”
– Richt was asked about his angry reaction to a slightly premature attempt to drench him in Powerade near the end of Saturday’s victory at Georgia Tech.
He said he had told the players at halftime that he didn’t want to see anyone smile until there was no time left on the clock. “Sure enough, it’s a minute and 20 [seconds] or whatever left and we get the ball back and they decide they’re going to dump me, figuring the game is over,” Richt said. “But I had my jaw set still and I wasn’t smiling or celebrating until that [clock] went to zero zero and we got the victory. And that’s why I got upset, and Bryan Evans basically got the brunt of it, and I love the kid dearly. I love all those guys. He was a little taken aback at my attitude, but afterwards I got a chance to hug his neck and tell him I love him and all that good stuff.”
– A caller said Tech coach Paul Johnson downplayed the importance of the Georgia game early last week and asked Richt, who is 8-1 vs. Tech, his thoughts on the magnitude of the rivalry.
“All I can tell you is our boys and our coaches don’t need a whole lot of motivation, I guess, to get fired up about this game,” Richt said. “And I’m not going to sit here and deny that what happened a year ago [helped] fuel it. It did; there is no question that it did. Them tearing up our hedges and doing some of the things that they were doing after the game at our expense didn’t sit too well with us. And we wanted to do something about it, and we want to continue to do something about it in years to come. And I’ll say this: I’ve always had a respect, a very healthy respect, for Georgia Tech and their football program, and we will continue to have that respect because they are an outstanding team and they do a great job over there. But it’s very, very big to us.”
– Richt had much praise for safety Reshad Jones’ performance on Saturday – his interception, his tackling, his pass breakups on Tech’s last series and the way he never gave up in chasing Tech receiver Demaryius Thomas on Thomas’ 76-yard touchdown.
“There were a lot of guys that made great plays, but I want to pay a special tribute to Reshad Jones,” Richt said. “I thought Reshad did such a great job of tackling, such a great job of making that interception. And also at crunch time he had to cover a couple of those deep balls and did a beautiful job of that too. I thought it was great for Reshad, considering all the grief he caught a year ago for that same ballgame.” (Jones, as you know, got much grief for botching a tackle on Tech’s game-clinching touchdown against Georgia last year.)
– And finally, the show’s last caller cited statistics on how many more times the Bulldogs have allowed 30-plus points under Martinez than under predecessor Brian VanGorder.
Richt’s reply: “You’re definitely going to win a whole lot more games if you can keep people under 30, there is no doubt about that.”

Tech played 6 games against teams who are not even eligible for a bowl game.
6.
Was Tech’s Paul Johnson joking when he said Tech fans should hit UGA fans in the face ?
You play in a lousy conference.
You played the worst out-of-conference schedule in America.
You brag you were undefeated against The Mighty SEC before you played us, when in fact you played the only 2 SEC teams who are not bowl eligible.
And, Jacksonville State.
The ACC has 2 bowls now with not even a team to send to them.
No other BCS conference lost to even one 1-AA team.
ACC lost to two (2) teams from the 1-AA.
Your conference Chumpionship Game pits 2 teams coming off losses to two 6-5 SEC teams.
Georgia Tech’s Academic Progress Rate does not seem to be a problem for Georgia Tech, even though it is worse than UGA’s APR in football, as it is quite obvious that Paul Johnson IS bringing in players who cannot pass the grade at Tech.
It is really rich that UGA fans have no class coming from the likes of what we put up with from the Tech fans in our UGA blog.
Tech fans here all day yesterday said that they don’t see how UGA fans feel that UGA destroyed Tech when we only beat you by 6 points, when in fact it was the Tech fans that said Tech would destroy UGA.
Losing by 6 points, is destroying UGA, Tech fans ?
Please.

Paul Johnson, Saint,
He has not handled this Georgia Tech Georgia game correctly at all.
First, with 2 weeks to prepare, he insists that the game is unimportant and that beating UGA is also not important.
Then, he has his wife interviewed and she says that she doesn’t even like football.
Then, during the game, he calls time-out so that he can throw out his entire coaching scheme and throw 4 passes in a row to end the game.
He also, you recall had put in Jabo Shaw and called for him to throw the ball deep.
Then, after the game he insists he is correct that Losing to UGA is also not important.
And, then he is interviewed live and comes up with this jewel, tell the Tech fans who cannot handle having to eat crow about the slaughter they guaranteed in fact being a 6-point loss, that they should just hit the UGA fans in the mouth.
Now, he is back to down-playing the game itself again, saying still that the game was unimportant.
I’d say that Paul Johnson wins the Lame Kitten Award for The UGA Georgia Tech Game from start to finish.
How about you ?

I’m Tech fan, UGA beat us this year because of the OL whipped GT’s def front 7.
But praising Jones for his coverage at the end of the game if a little bit much.
Interference on the 2nd down pass when the ball was almost intercepted (foot on line).
Then 4th and 10 and the receiver was wide open for 1st down and to get out of bounds, And you coach praises the coverage. Receiver flat out dropped the ball and it had nothing to do with good coverage.

Excuses, Excuses
Your program sucks, your coach looks like Susan Doyle, you get unwanted recruits BBBWWAAAAHHHAAAA……..BBBWWWAAAAHHHHAAAA
You lost douches. Face it – You are not competitive with UGA
We would have damaged your stadium like you did ours last year, but it looked like someone beat us to it. What a piece. Coach Johnson will soon learn that big talk only makes him look like more of a douce nozzle when we hand him his tail each year

Thoughts on the Morning After

• “Like I mentioned earlier…Nesbitt had his ankle wrenched early in the game. We could have very well lose him for the two remaining games of the schedule. I guess if you can’t stop someone, you hurt them…
• When Nesbitt got hurt it seemed to take the air out of the stadium. I’ll admit that I started worrying more about the ACC title game and BCS game at that point. Rumors in the stands that it was a high ankle sprain really made me nervous.”
I agree with StingDoc: Georgia is a Dirty Team. I would prefer to root for a team which plays clean football than win with a team which decides to take out Tech’s key player.

BuzzFan, get over it, the better team won 30-24. Coach Johnson won’t have to worry about getting state championship rings made this year.
If you see Caleb King running STILL UNTOUCHED around the tech campus could you please deliver him a Jumbo from the Varsity? Thanks in advance.

LizDawg, “The better team?” Don’t you mean “The Dirty Team?” It seems you approve of winning with thugs which says a lot about your character and about you as a person.

Buzzfan,
….which was negated by a 30-24 loss to a SEC team by an ACC team.
Deal with it Tech fans and enjoy the next year of the revenge comments you guys so richly deserve after a years worth of childish rants on these blogs.
Also there was nothing dirty about the play on which Nesbit got injured. His leg got caught under a player as a defender was trying to strip the ball. I just love the excuses that you guys are coming up with.

DawgNation, Miss State beat Ole Miss = Tech losing because the dawgs are a dirty team? I don’t think so. You can’t be serious “His leg got caught under a player as a defender was trying to strip the ball” Nesbitt was down & screaming he was in pain while dawgs kept twisting him until Allen & others had to pull dawgs off him. No wau they were trying to “strip the ball.” They knew what they were doing: Knock Nesbitt out of the game and you win. Winning that way is nothing to brag about uunless you are a complete loser.
