Georgia’s football players –- even its passer -– got a kick out of the way the Bulldogs ran the ball in Saturday night’s victory over Georgia Tech.
“Some guy in the stands behind me yelled, ‘Joe Cox, you [stink]. Your coach won’t even let you throw the ball,’” Georgia’s quarterback said. “I wanted to turn around and say, ‘We don’t need to!’”
Georgia ran the ball on each of its first 13 offensive plays, not throwing a pass until the second quarter, and by game’s end had run for more yards –- 339 –- than in any game in nine seasons under coach Mark Richt. Conversely, Georgia passed for fewer yards (76) than in any game under Richt.
Running the ball was Georgia’s not-so-secret plan all along against the Yellow Jackets. It was even written on tailback Washaun Ealey’s face.
Under one eye were the words “I Run,” and under the other “This State.”
Fellow tailback Caleb King had written the same message on his arms.
Despite the well-laid plan, the extent of the running game’s success exceeded even the Bulldogs’ expectations.
“I never could have predicted that,” Richt said of the 339 yards rushing. “We knew we wanted to run the ball, control the clock, keep the ball away from Georgia Tech as long as we could. We wanted to at least do a decent job in that area.”
“Hopefully we do a lot more of this in the future,” Ealey said.
Richt said the offensive line, tight ends and receivers all did an exceptional job of blocking. And Ealey and King accelerated their late-season progress.
Both had the first 100-yard games of their collegiate careers, Ealey carrying 20 times for 183 yards and King 18 times for 166 yards and two touchdowns, including a pivotal 75-yard run that immediately answered an early second-half Tech touchdown.
It was the first time since 2004 that Georgia had two 100-yard gainers in the same game.
“They were feeding off each other,” Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said. And they were keeping Tech’s offense off the field. “That’s what you’ve got to do against their offense — try to make them impatient a little bit,” Bobo said.
Ealey, a freshman, and King, a redshirt sophomore, were prized recruits whey signed with Georgia, and their recent play bodes well for the future.
“Caleb is finally starting to run like the guy we saw in all those Rivals clips,” said Cox, referring to videos of King as a high school star on the Rivals.com website.

Great game! Good to see! Watching King and Ealey reminded me of watching Auburn’s Brooks and Cribbs in the 70’s. Great 1-2 punch! The offensive line controlled the field and Reenie was all over the field in fine form! Please come back for your Senior year, life is not just about the money! Willie and Mike, you did a great job! Thanks Coach Richt!

Where is St Simons? I guess he will tell us that about 60 years ago they dominated UGA. Certainly, not that they have lost 8 of the last 9.
If UGA played in the ACC they would be in the Top 5.

Good win for UGA(best game I have seen them play all year). Congratulations on your victory, sure would be nice to see some class in winning though. UGA had a great game plan and executed great, but Tech still had the chance to win in the end. Sometimes the breaks don’t go your way. Can’t wait for next year because this is the start of a great rivalry between CPJ and CMR. Go Tech.

Why did it take Bobo 2 months to figure out Washaun could run the ball? I posted in August he was the only running back that had the “wow” factor when he runs.
Why did it take WM two months to teach somebody how to tackle? We missed a couple but overall the tackling was good and they went low instead of around the shoulders.
Tip of the week for Bobo.NEVER EVER line up Branden Smith at tailback again.

If Jones is not hurt,Georgia is still trying to pass the ball. With him not even dressing out it forced Georgia to try something else.If you go back to the first game of the year against OK State, they successfully ran the ball. They then abandoned the run for the next 10 games.
Every lineman will tell you they would rather block moving forward than backing up.It is amazing how simple the game really is.
I can’t wait to see how Georgia handles their coaching situation now.
It was disappointing that Tech had the bye week and came out looking sluggish and not very crisp in their execution.

Curb your enthusiasm fellow Dawgs. Last night only proves that a mediocre team can win in a weak conference. In case you have not noticed we don’t play in the Big 11 or the ACC. In the SEC East, mediocre teams win 7 or 8 games max and get humiliated on a regular basis, just in case you have forgotten the first 11 games of this season. Changes are needed if we are to even be competitive against the teams in our own conference. Can you even imagine how bad we would be playing UF without our best player? Both CWM and Fabris must go.

Well, congrats Dawgs. You were the better team last night. You’ve put up with alot of ripping over the last year, so go ahead…I’m braced.
Anyway, this game was definitely won in the trenches. I’ve heard alot of talk about how your OL has struggled, but they sure looked good to me last night. Your center, Ben Jones, is particularly impressive. He’s just a big ol mean looking redneck plowboy from Alabama. He turned our nose tackle into astro-turf pancake a couple of times last night. I’m not very happy about the fact that they’re all coming back next season. Anyway, good luck in the Chick-fil-a bowl against Va Tech or Miami or whoever shows up there to play ya. As for my Jackets, I’m not going to crawl in a hole. We got alot left to play for. We can’t give up on this team now, not with the ACC championship and a lucrative BCS bowl at stake. YellowandBlackAttack, I second DAWGS Rules. I congragulated Tech on an earlier blog on their great season. You guys played a tough game and UGA had to earn it. I for one knew Tech was going to make a run in the second half. When Thomas went 75 for the TD, I was not worried. I was prepared for it. Thomas is a physical beast that smaller CBs will have trouble with. I know he must be sick about the dropped pass. And again, go whip Clemson’s arse and get your BCS Bowl.

Great game, DAWGS! Did anyone notice a no punt game! When has that happened last? Why would Mark Richt and Paul Johnson suddenly start passing. Georgia is running the ball so great and the GT team doing so well on the short option passing/run. Georgia took away the automatic field goal on 3rd and 3 for the pass and GT starting throwing the ball hail mary type passing late in the game for no reason(3 times in a row)
PJ just was so sure of the automatic 4th down conversion he gambled and lost and so did Mark Richt with a long field goal try that would have iced the game earlier in the 4th quarter.

First, of all I am neither a Bulldog or a Yellow Jacket. I am a Miami Hurricane fan living in the ATL. I must say I was surprised at the UGA win over GT. But I was not suprised at the running of Caleb King. I have been waiting for him all year and see he finally showed up in the end. He is one hell of a running back and will break many records at UGA. Watched him in high school and saw how special he was. Glad to see him finally get his chance to SHINE and shine he did! It looks like he has a partner who can run with him as well. They both probably weren’t ready during the season, but it sure as hell look like they are ready now. MR didn’t hold anything back with this game. He packed both barrels with this GT game. Congrats to UGA Bulldogs!

Let’s not get carried away. Yes this was a good finish to a terrible season, but this game doesn’t make up for the entire season. Truth is UGA still couldn’t cover tech’s wrs, they just can’t pass.
But the rb’s had a great game and the offensive line actually created holes for them to run through.

Not too early to look ahead to 2010 schedule which has us dropping LSU, Oklahoma State, Arizona State and Tenn. Tech for Mississippi State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Idaho State and Colorado. On paper, at least, this slate seems a whole lot easier.
Go DAWGS!

Who are we playing in the kick azz Papajohns bowl? Does anybody know? Also, why isn’t UGA ranked? I mean we are 7-5 and play in the SEC, which is the Sorry Education Conference. I cannot believe we aren’t ranked. hmmm……….Oh, that’s right………….It’s next year that we win it all. I say we play DUKE. Now, that will be a tough bowl game. LOSERS UGA! THWG!

I believe the almighty puppies belong in the Independence Bowl. I mean just look at what they accomplished. A 7-5 season and another loss to their favorite team, UF. Losing 17 out of 20 to UF isn’t so bad. LOL! I invite your team to officially accept an invitation to the Independence Bowl. It’s a great bowl and it’s usually played like, December 20th or something like that. See, this way our team is not in the national spot light, but rather our fans are chewing tobacco, drinking beer and hunting for the holidays while all the other successful teams will play in BCS bowls. THWG! JOKE!

South Carolina – Defense makes game saving play
Auburn – Defense stops potential game tying drve
Tech – Defense stops potential game winning drive
Three times this year the defense held on to win big rival games. Let’s give Martinez creddit when it is due. This is a good man that loves Georgia and is a creddit to our school and the players love him. The great Erk Russell had a lousy defensive team prior to the 1975 junkyard dawgs. Be careful what you wish for. All you have to do is look at the debacle at Auburn.

If CMR, Coach BooBoo, and UGA had tried to run the ball more all season, perhaps the season results would be much better. UGA put way too much of the outcome on Joe Cox. Why did UGA not run the ball more against other teams, or was GT defense just really that bad?

Thoughts after the game.
Act like we’ve been here before…Not like Techies who give out ring for a 1 game win streak.
Those rings probably will increase in value because of the rarity of Tech wins.
A 5 loss SEC team beats a 10-1 ACC team. What’s new?
I wish I had had more faith.
Techies, I’m glad it hurts so much.
Now the excuses start. “We was robbed!”
The local TV guy referred to the “Student Athletes” of Georgia Tech…yeah, sure….

I believe it is time for UGA fans to lay off Joe Cox. I think it was prved that if Bobo were to have game planned properly all season, we would have had at least 2 more wins. The less Joe had to do, the better he was. Hell that game coulda been won by 13 if Troupe don’t drop a td. He looked shocked that Joe nailed him with a perfect pass. Believe if Joe were able to come back jext year, he would be a great QB.
