Talked with Gary Stokan, the president of the Chick-fil-A Bowl, tonight.
Projections that Georgia will be the SEC representative in the game are just that — projections. Stokan said he has no idea at the moment which SEC team will be in the game, what with half of the league — literally — sharing 7-5 records.
“It’s certainly going to be interesting this year,” Stokan said, “probably more than in any of the 12 years I’ve been doing this.”
But Stokan did say that Georgia’s upset victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday moved the Bulldogs onto the Chick-fil-A radar.
A week ago, the bowl had Auburn, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee on its watch list of SEC teams. The Dogs joined the list Saturday night, Stokan said.
“We will take them under consideration for the Chick-fil-A Bowl, certainly,” he said.
The decision will come by Sunday (Dec. 6), bowl selection day.
The Chick-fil-A Bowl gets its choice of SEC teams after the BCS title game, the Sugar Bowl, the Capital One Bowl, the Outback Bowl and the Cotton Bowl make their picks.
The BCS title game will get the Florida-Alabama winner; the Sugar Bowl the Florida-Alabama loser; the Capital One almost certainly LSU; and the Cotton and Outback probably (not definitely) Ole Miss and Tennessee.
If everything plays out that way, then the Chick-fil-A will pick from among Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Auburn and Arkansas.
All are 7-5 overall.
A case can be made for Georgia, or for just about any of the others. Georgia is 4-4 in the league — the other four are 3-5 — and finished ahead of Kentucky and South Carolina in the East. In head-to-head games, Georgia beat South Carolina, Auburn and Arkansas (but lost to Kentucky).
Part of the equation, too, is which SEC team would make the most logical match for whichever ACC team the Chick-fil-A gets, or vice versa.
While the Chick-fil-A Bowl likes to fill hotel rooms in the process of putting together an appealing game, Stokan said that wouldn’t be a factor against picking the Dogs. Indeed, the Chick-fil-A had Georgia Tech in its game last year.
And while Stokan did not indicate that Georgia — or anyone else — is at the top of the Chick-fil-A’s muddled list right now, he did say that he thinks the Bulldogs’ season was too harshly judged by some critics before the Tech game.
He noted that three of Georgia’s five losses came against teams that at one time were ranked in the top 12 of the BCS standings: Florida, LSU and Oklahoma State. And Tech was ranked No. 7 in the BCS when Georgia beat the Jackets on Saturday.
“I think Georgia has played one of the five toughest schedules in the country,” Stokan said.
Behind the Chick-fil-A Bowl in the SEC pecking order are Nashville’s Music City Bowl, Memphis’ Liberty Bowl, Shreveport’s Independence Bowl and Birmingham’s Papajohn’s.com Bowl.

its easy. it comes down to if the NERDS lose in the ACC championship game. NERDS lose = UGA in Nashville vs UNC/BC. Nerds win = UGA vs Clemson in ChickFilA bowl.

Hey, Dawgs! Here’s something we can work on in preparation for the bowl game (whichever it may be). Make a play and get back to the huddle; prepare yourself for the next play.
No more of this ‘Look at Me’ stuff, dancing around, beating your chest, and/or waiving for us to cheer. Just do your job.

Let it be known SEC is the strongest conference. The bulldogs rocked the best the ACC has to offer at their own house. South Carolina killed the number two team in the ACC and Fl State never showed up to play Florida. Tech would not have won five games in the SEC and would have lost most of their players to injury. They were droping like flies playing against real men.

Jeff Sagarin BCS Poll has ranked UGA Number 17.
Kenneth Massey BCS Poll has ranked UGA Number 18.
USA Today Coaches’ Poll has ranked UGA Number 33.
Anderson – Hester Seattle Times Poll has ranked UGA Number 24.
BCS Poll has ranked UGA Number 28.
BCS Computer Polls have ranked UGA Number 24.
There are now no ACC teams ranked in the AP Poll nor Coaches’ Poll Top 10. Georgia Tech is no longer the top-ranked ACC team; Virginia Tech is Number 11 in both the Coaches’ Poll and AP Poll.
Clemson dropped out of the USA Today Coaches’ Poll Top 25.
SEC has Florida Number 1 in both Coaches’ and AP Polls. AP Poll has Alabama Number 2, and USA Today Coaches’ Poll has Alabama Number 3.
BCS has Florida Alabama Number 1 and Number 2.
UGA is projected for $5.6 million dollar Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl against the top-ranked ACC team
Virginia Tech, again pitting the top non-BCS ACC team against the 5th best SEC team.
Tennessee is projected for $3 million dollar Outback Bowl in Tampa against Wisconsin.
Nebraska who has not played any team in the BCS Top 33 except for 1 Loss to Number 11 Virginia Tech plays Texas to see if the BCS would pit Alabama Florida for both The SEC Championship Game and the BCS National Championship Game. A Nebraska win could bring that game up for the 1st time pitting 2 teams from the same conference in the BCS National Championship Game. Root for Nebraska, but they haven’t beat any team in the BCS Top 33.
Tennessee is Number 46 in the BCS Poll (UGA Number 28.) Tennessee beat no team in the BCS Top 25, no team in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll Top 25 and no team in the AP Poll Top 25.
ACC is 9-11 against BCS conferences.
SEC is 10-4 against BCS Conferences.
SEC 10-4 is by far the best of any conference against BCS Conferences, as no Conference has more wins against BCS Conferences and no Conference is close to the SEC Winning Percentage against BCS Conferences.
SEC is 31-6 against all 1-A teams. This, too, is by far the best of all conferences.
No BCS Conference team lost to any 1-AA team, except the ACC who Lost not once but twice to 1-AA teams.
SEC out of conference is 42-6 by far the best in the nation of all conferences.
ACC does not have a winning record against The SEC, The Big XII, the Big Ten (11), nor the PAC-10.
ACC is 2-5 against SEC this season so far.
There are only 2 conferences with top-ranked teams, The SEC with the Top 2 and the Big XII with 1 of the Top 3. After that, all the weenie conferences are ahead of every ACC team, every PAC-10 team, and every Big Ten (11) team.
TCU, Cincinnati, and Boise State are all 3 ranked ahead in every poll of every ACC team, every PAC-10 team, and ahead of every Big Ten (11) team.
ACC does not even have a Top 10 ranked team, again. None.
The same as it is every year.
Average BCS Ranking of every team in every conference shows SEC Number 37, Big East Number 40, PAC-10 Number 41, ACC Number 48, Big Ten (11) Number 50 and the Big XII dragging up the rear at Average BCS Ranking of Number 51.
Big XII is really really really really bad.
Notre Dame is 6-6 against a soft soft soft schedule. Notre Dame beat no Top 25 team in any poll. Just imagine losing to BCS Ranked Number 83 Michigan. Notre Dame’s best win is over BCS Ranked Number 56 team, Nevada for God’s sake.
TCU played a really soft schedule. They will obviously lose if they play any reasonable opponent.
Oregon. Thank Oregon of the PAC-10 for Losing to Boise State for why Boise State will take away the BCS at large big from the ACC.
UGA SoS is Number 6 in the nation with the win over Number 12 Georgia Tech.
Tennessee vols SoS is Number 44 in the nation with the win over Number 28 UGA.
Georgia Tech SoS is Number 48 in the nation with the win over Number 11 Virginia Tech; yet Virginia Tech is ranked AHEAD of Georgia Tech in both the USA Today Coaches’ Poll and ahead of Georgia Tech in the AP Poll.
4th best SEC team is UGA in the BCS Rankings at Number 28.
4 SEC East teams are 7-5 tied for 2nd in the SEC East behind Florida. 2 of those have a losing record in The SEC Kentucky and South Carolina. South Carolina is ranked way ahead of Tennessee vols at Number 31 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll which the vols are not in, and Number 35 for South Carolina in the BCS Poll. Tennessee vols are Number 46 in the BCS Poll because the vols beat no team ranked in the Top 25 of the polls. South Carolina beat no team in the Top 25 of the polls either, but South Carolina has far better wins than Tennessee vols with South Carolina’s win over Ole Miss and win over Climpsum Farmers to ruin the ACC Chumpionship Game with UGA’s major assistance dropping Number 12 Georgia Tech from any discussion of anything this morning.
SEC Rankings 2009 :
1.Florida 12-0. BCS # 1.
2.Alabama 12-0. BCS # 2.
3.LSU 9-3 BCS Number 13.
4.UGA 7-5 vs # 6 SoS and BCS # 28.
5.Arkansas 7-5 BCS # 30.
6.Ole Miss 8-4 vs # 59 SoS BCS # 33.
7.South Carolina 7-5 BCS # 35.
8.Mississipppi State 5-7 vs. # 1 SoS and BCS Number 44.
9.Tennessee vols 7-5 vs # 44 SoS and BCS Number 46.
10.Auburn 7-5 BCS # 48.
11.Kentucky 7-5 BCS # 51.
Ole Miss could get a better bowl bid than UGA at 8-4, but when you see SoS # 59 for Ole Miss and # 6 for UGA at 7-5, the nod goes to UGA.
UGA gets the 4th Bowl bid in The SEC. Clearly.
Every AJ-C sportswriter picked Georgia Tech. I picked GA to beat Tech and South Carolina to beat Clemson, relegating the ACC Chumpionship Game to nothingness.

You are right that a GT loss next week could put the Dawgs in the Music City Bowl. However, if GT goes to the Orange, I think Chick-Fil-A wants VA Tech. VA Tech is 9-3 and would be a lot more attractive than an 8-5 Clemson team coming off back-to-back losses.

BuLLdawg – Thanks for the outstanding post with all the BCS stats. Very interesting reading. Much more interesting than “UGAY stinks – Nerds lost – etc.”
I remember the days when we could find that kind of in-depth information in the AJC. In fact Tim Tucker used to be one of the best at compiling a bunch of facts and statistics into an informative summary. I miss those days.
Now all we get is Bradley’s “The Tech guy said something bad about your mother. Discuss.” and Schultz’s “Russ (the substitute UGA) claims Georgia girls are better looking than Tech girls. Discuss it amongst yourselves while we count the hits.

I think that CMR was very misdirected in his anger when the players gave him a Gatorade bath at the end of the game. Where was that reaction when it came to the poor playing during the entire season? Beautiful win yes and thankfully I don’t have to come on here anymore and read Saint Simons post. Now on to more important matters.
As for the Bowl game, yes I would like to see UGA in the ChickFila bowl best bowl available. However, one of the things I really enjoy about bowl season is getting to play teams from different conf. Personally I would prefer any of our options other than an SEC vs ACC matchup just for the fun factor of a truly different opponent.
Now I loved the win just as much as any dog fan but here are my thoughts following the game:
Why did it take 11 games to learn to not Joe Cox lose the game?
Why did Ealy not start earlier and what took C. King so long to learn he has to run hard at the college level? I hope it doesn’t require him to have that huge of holes to be successful.
Martinez still must go along with a minimum of Fabris included?
What in the crap was that screen pass call on 3rd and 4 at the end of the game? Why play for a 50+ field goal when all it took was a 5 yard pattern plus Cox has struggled with the screen all year. Just to me showed how our play calling and decision making still needs to be improved. A 55 yard fg attempt is never a high percentage option even with the best or 2nd best kicker in the country.
I agree with hunting dawg, where was that emotion for the tackling out of bounds that was displayed during the powerade bath? That’s what I want to see from CMR from time to time. I did love the way he worked the officials.
Where in the crap was the R Jones we saw saturday night all year?

Stokan will probably choose one of the other teamsfor the bowl out of spite for UGA not agreeing to move its home game with Tech to the Ga. Dome. Hotel rooms may be important for the city, but I thought the bowl game’s first priority would be to sell as many tickets as possible. With UGA as one of the teams, it would almost certainly guarantee a sell-out of the game.

Tennessee will most likely get the better bowl pick before GA, KY, or SC. TN beat all three and KY beat GA. I know it will be hard to swallow, but TN ended up finishing #2 behind Florida in the East even though their record was the same as the others, but they get the tie breaker as they beat GA, KY and SC.

God I am so grateful for the win and to shut those childish Tech “fans” pie holes for the next year. With that being said we are lucky. Yes Georgia played one of its best games and Tech one of its worst but the same problems plagued our Dawgs. Turnovers, penalties and the in-ability to recover fumbles. My goodness I have never seen a group of linemen who know what the snap count is cause so many off sides. Stupid and I mean really stupid personal fouls and NO admonishment from the coaches. Play calling that, through most of the game almost perfect, turn to dumb calls for a screen which has yet to work worth a flip all year. Bobo is in love with that play. And missed tackles. If I see another shoulder tackle by a defensive back I think I am going to puck. I don’t know when kids were taught to use their shoulders and not wrap up a runner but the soon to be defunct DC should be teaching these guys fundamentals instead if shoulder flinging. This was the first time all season I saw CMR get emotionally involved with the game and he seemed to be in control instead of allowing his OC and DC unchecked control. Now if he can go over and slap the special teams coach upside the head for his kickoff coverage schemes and the stupid “directional” kick. I liked seeing CMR with anger in his eyes at his players at the end but should have shown that with the personal fouls. I think a wake up call has gone out to CMR and he knows that he has to make changes. Don’t worry coach, friendships will last but a SEC job wont if you let that be your guiding motivation.

JC_ATL I guess that means Miami, Maryland, and TCU are too. Georgia should join the ACC because thats the only way they will ever come close to winning another Conference championship for a long time. Florida will always own Georgia, and Tenn is just getting started, and when Micheal Dyer gets to Auburn they will be tough. So get used to being the middling SEC team.

BuLLdawg, Cuz, and the rest of the real dawg fans – Congrats on a good win. You simply beat us this time. No excuses, no bad calls, just good old fashioned football. It hurt on Saturday night, but by Sunday I just had to give your guys credit for a good game. Your offensive line just manhandled ours. Shows we need to recruit some big boys. The good news is, we have a real rivalry back. So, congrats this year, and we’ll play it again in 52 weeks! THWG!

No one said it meant nothing to us Bulldogs to beat you.
You are a nothing of a football program with 7 years you have gone losing every single solitary game.
You play in a dump of football stadium, down there in the slums of a city of 6 million people, where all the drugs are and where all the crime is.
And, you know it.
You have NEVER ever won a single 1 Final AP Poll National Championship in Football.
Your football players nowadays have a WORSE Academic Progress Rate in FOOTBALL than we do at The University of This State, UGA.
You named your football stadium for Bobby Dodd, and he is a college drop-out of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
You have Lost to UGA in Football 60 times.
60.
Only 4 schools in all of America have ever lost more games in 1-A football to any one team than the Georgia Institute of Technology has Lost to UGA.
You play in a sorry conference.
Your entire conference does not have 1 single solitary team in the Top 10 of either the USA Today Coaches’ Poll nor in the AP Poll Top 10.
Again.
You never do.
You play an ACC chumpionship game wherever you can find a place to play it who will have you. This year it is in Tampa, and it consists of 1 team who isn’t even ranked in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll.
Not at all.
You have the lowest ratings in college football.
You have the fewest attendance in college football.
You travel the worst.
You can’t even get people to come down there giving away 4 cokes, 2 hotdogs, 2 bags of boiled peanuts, and a parking pass to just buy any ticket.
You blew up half your stadium to make it look like it is full.
You still can’t fill it up.
NCAA states that Georgia Tech played the Number 48 Strength of Schedule in the nation this year.
Congratulations.
You live for only 1 goal, even if Paul Johnson doesn’t understand, and that is to only beat UGA.
It is all you care about.
You accomplish that 38.7 percent of the time.
37-60-5.
.387 winning percentage Georgia Tech against UGA.
Your fans are the stinkiest in the nation.
You have to appeal to the fans of Georgia Tech (both of them) to not throw trash on the field.
You have spent the time pregame going to all WebPages you can find to say how badly you are going to utterly destroy UGA.
Your 1 wide receiver who did not quit the team when your coach brought his all run no pass scheme, dropped the ball on 4th down thrown right to him standing there all alone wide open with no one anywhere near him but himself.
Your coach who says he runs the ball only threw passes on the last 4 downs to end your chances again this year.
It is your obsession with beating UGA in football that you brought on yourself that finds you now whining that Oh, BuLLdawg sir, all you UGA fans said that it didn’t mean anything to us UGA fans to beat Tech. All you do is whine, when you lose to UGA. Whine waah waah waah. Look nerds, we own you in football and always have and always will. I absolutely hate to lose to Georgia Tech in football. It means nothing to me to lose to Georgia Tech in football ? B.S. It means a lot more to you to beat us, than it does to us to beat you, coming from my side of the street. I would far prefer to beat Auburn than to beat Georgia Tech. That means something. They don’t cheat, kick and whine. They play football on the Plains. On the flats, you don’t play football and no body cares about Georgia Tech football, least of all, you Georgia Tech fans (both of you.) But, by God, you want to beat UGA at football more than anything in your life.
You Lost again.
60th time.
30-24 at your Grant Field in the slums where all the drugs are and where the crime is.
I would NEVER name my field Grant Field in downtown Atlanta after what the Commander in Chief of the Union Army in the War of Northern Aggression did burning down the Proud City of Atlanta. Why don’t you just sell the land downtown and move to Gwinnett where the AJ-C moved to, closer to UGA than to Tech anyway nowadays. Maybe you could engineer a sports complex there, because you sure as hell don’t have any venue for sports any one would want to come to where you are now. The AJ-C states that there are 29,700 Georgia Tech alumni in its readership and that there are over a third of a million UGA graduates in the AJ-C readership.
You spend your days and nights in here at the AJ-C telling the AJ-C that Georgia Tech is great at football and that you did NOT play the Number 48 NCAA Strength of Schedule this season. You sure as hell did.
You beat 1 team ranked Number 11 in the AP Poll and Number 11 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll, Virginia Tech and now they are ranked AHEAD of you. There is not 1 other game all season long that Georgia Tech has won against ANY Ranked Team in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll Top 25. Not 1.
And, we don’t care about beating that kind of B.S. for a football program ?
You’re a nonentity of a football program in a nonentity of a conference of little itty bitty teeny weenie schools, and you went out of conference besides us to play the only 2 SEC schools of the 12 SEC schools who are not going to a bowl game. 10 of the 12 SEC teams are bowl eligible. You chose the other 2. And, don’t give me this crap that you didn’t know that before you scheduled them along with Jacksonville State and your sorry lot of football programs in the ACC. All cupcake conference.
30-24.
The entire ACC are insignificant in the discussion of college football, and have been. You have no team in the Top 10 of the AP Poll and no team in the Top 10 of the USA Today Coaches’ Poll.
Your conference chumpionship game against Not Top 25 USA Today Coaches’ Poll Climpsum Farmers, none of you will go to. None of you will watch. No one else will go. No one else will watch. You will not even sell the tickets given to you.
And, we are not supposed to care about Losing to you ? B.S. Have you seen Paul Johnson’s wife ? Listened to her that she doesn’t even care about football. I take it for granted that we are going to beat you. With a 38.7 winning percentage against us, I can see how you would be so obsessed with beating us. But, don’t bring that weak B.S. around here Wes and the rest of you nerds that UGA fans said we don’t care about Losing to you. We just take it for granted that we are going to beat you. I guaranteed it. And, I have read the posts, and all you sorry fans of Georgia Tech who bragged before the game what you guaranteed, have every single one of you failed to show up and take your medicine, for which I have no respect for you fans of Georgia Tech, and that includes especially the AJ-C, Tony Barnhart, Jeff Schultz, and you fat slob Wes Durham.

Dang BuLLdawg,
That was a very entertaining lashing of all those Techsters that have been on here for the past year. Man I could feel that hate and it has nothing to do with that “Good Ole Fashion” thing. Come on you Tech fans that had been huddled in your dorm room typing away for a year and face the flip side of that broken record you had been playing for a year. Some of you have crawled out from under your blankie and have tried to start to make the excuses and finding you have non reverted to that lame standby SAT and who you think is smarter than whom. We are still here DawgNation. No excuses, and congrats. I think BullDawg’s comments are bit unclassy as I have never made fun of the Dawg nation the way he slams Tech alumni, students, our campus (which the workers still haven’t cleaned up), stadium, players, coaches, fans, you name it. Ironically enough, I know a UGA grad who goes to Tech now and is still loyal to the Dawgs; however, he made note that the Dawgs are some of the worst at cleaning up after games. Honestly though, congratulations and good luck with the reset of your season. Maybe we can get you guys at least in basketball at your place in January if CPH doesn’t mess it up.

BuLLdawg; great post. You should get into the business of sports analysis. Thanks for really great in depth coverage, something that we are not used to seeing in the AJC. Keep blogging and I will continue reading and enjoying. Oh yes, Vol fans you caught us just right. We had just been robbed the week before versus LSU, and CMR just did not have our guys ready to play. If we play you 10 times this year, I guarantee you we win 9 times. Anyway, justify and rationalize all you want, but TN is not the same caliber team that UGA is, because as BuLLdawg so beautifully showed you; the stats don’t lie. Go Dawgs!!!!!!

Some of these comments are absurd. GT has a very good football team and could have won the game, if not for the dropped pass. UGA played great and did what they needed to do to win. Their rushing game was great and they were able to minimize penalties and turnovers. CPJ is building something good at GT and they will be a formidable opponent for as long as he is there. If he gets a defense then his style of play can take over a game. I was anxious the entire fourth quarter because GT has the ability to score in a hurry. The four passes at the end were very interesting. If the pass was not dropped who knows what would have happened. UGA finally played tough for four quarters. Hopefully this is the start of something good in Athens.

I think we are in for a great rivalry, the way it ought to be. Two great Head Coaches that have been around nothing but winning programs. I’m a Dawg all the way, but I do like Paul Johnson and Mark Richt is just what UGA needs and better hang on to. At the first of the game I did like the part on the jumbo tron where Coach Johnson said you need to turn that damn thing up, and at the end of the game when Coach Richt got mad because they threw gatorade on him too quick with 1:20 on the clock. Two great Head Coaches that high school players can look forward to playing for.

I’ll try again. I’ve never attended college. But always enjoyed college ball. I just don’t understand all this crazy talk trashing another school. Damn BuLLdawg, I guess Ga. Tech just better tear down the whole campus and pave the campus over for a parking lot. In your opinion the whole school is just a dump in the middle of a drug project. I’ve got a big family located all over the state. Some attended UGA. Some attended Tech. Auburn, Furman, Clemson, and other schools. I know you’re going to get your back up when I say this, but its true, Anyone that has gotten an engineering degree from that little trade school on North Ave. has done very well. I’M not saying some UGA graduates don’t do well, but the ones in my family are teaching school, office managers, selling insurance, one nephew with a UGA degree is working in a mail room at a bank. (I’m not kidding.) The ones with the engineering degree are living all over the country and are to busy to get involved in some ballgame. Grow up and GET REAL BuLLdawg. There are more important things going on in this world than some state football rivalry. Do you know that many UFL. fans look at the Dawg nation just as you look at the Tech fans? You mean to tell me that when you guys beat the gators your fanbase is not gonna go NUTS celebrateing,I figured out many years ago to not judge a university by how good the football team is. Why do you think Duke, Vanderbilt, Tulane, and many more almost never have a good football team. Its because Mr. Jockstrap, they are learning institutions. They pride themselves in turning out scholars. NOT FOOTBALL PLAYERS.

Love the stats. However, stats can be packaged different ways to bolster arguments. In statistical terms, the BCS rankings are only used to select #1 vs #2. The accuracy diminishes the further you go beyond that. I noticed you had Tennessee ranked below several teams that the Vols crushed, including South Carolina and Georgia. Head-to-head is the most important stat. Also, it must be noted that the Vols are 4-1 against SEC East teams this season. Jeff Sagarin lists the Vols schedule strength as 25. Tennessee is one of only 5 SEC teams receiving votes in this week’s AP Rankings (note that Georgia did not receive votes.)
