Reshad Jones’ last game between the hedges?

ATHENS — One day after Georgia junior linebacker Rennie Curran acknowledged that Saturday’s game against Kentucky could be his last in Sanford Stadium, junior safety Reshad Jones said: “I’ll probably have similar thoughts as Rennie.”

Jones, who like Curran is eligible to enter the 2010 NFL draft, said he’ll weigh the possibility after Georgia’s season.

Jones said he’ll ask the NFL draft advisory committee, which provides underclassmen with assessments of their draft potential, for an evaluation.

“I’m going to send my [paperwork] in and see what I get back from there,” Jones said Wednesday. “The most accurate way of making my decision is . . . to see what they think and what prediction they have.

“I say it’s kind of 50-50 right now,” he added, “until I get my [report] back where I can make a solid decision.”

Jones flirted with entering the 2009 NFL draft but decided at the last hour to stay in school.

Reshad you need to come back for another year so you can play for a new D Coordinator and show what you’ve got.

I can understand why both Reshad and Rennie would go.

I think they both will benefit from a great senior year. Neither has had great junior years. I hope they decide to stay.

We kind of grew up a little this year (or at least that is whay I hope) and the adversity can really be a benefit. Go DAWGS!

Reshad please leave you have been nothing but awful for UGA. You can’t cover, commit stupid penalties, and look totally lost in the secondary. If you are a high draft pick I will be shocked.

Obviously, UGA juniors haven’t seen their performances…Rennie, you are a great tackler, but your pass coverage is crap..but you haven’t intercepted one ball in your career and have had 10 balls bounce off your chest..you need to stay and work toward becoming a complete player!
Rashad, Rashad…where do I begin? Bryan Evans is not the only safety on this team who is garbage in pass coverage…You have digressed in that facet…your tackling has gotten moderately better, but you are not great….The NFL advisory board is not accurate at all…they tell all players what they want to hear…Why the hell would the NFL say,”hell, stay in college another year…” They don’t give a crap if you get better in college…

Anybody on this board that talks crap about the players is a loser! you get your fat ass out there and do it better, it is easy to sit on the couch and say you should have made that takle, or had that pick. Any one here play college ball or even get recruited……. thats what i thought! Yes, some of the guys did not turn out to be what we thought they were but it is no reason to be a jerk!

Hey A. Since when do you have to play football to know when you see BAD effort? R. Jones had ALL the accolades coming out of high school but he didn’t prove them.I can’t believe he wants to go pro. Maybe he’ll be a free agent. Why would you come out and NOT get drafted when you can stay one more year and hone your “skills” ??

It’s obvious why these guys want to leave.

They both believe Soft Willie Martinez and Sorry John Jancek are coming back.

They know neither of these clowns can help them become truly great players.

So why waste another year and get injured?

Better to be a second or third round draft pick, get good money, and show what you can do with some good defensive coaching for a change.

If Mark Richt wants to keep those two (and keep his damn job beyond next year) then it is time to FIRE WILLIE MARTINEZ!!!

Jones has improved his tackling skills from last year. He still struggles big time in pass coverage. One more year will only benefit his draft stock.

Renee and Jones must think Willie is coming back. If I knew he would coach me for another year, I’d get out of Athens too. I scream and scream and scream … IT’S TIME TO FIRE WILLIE! Do I think he will be fired? No, I don’t. I think CMR will try every way possible to keep things as they are. It will probably take Damon Evans to make the decision. I’m not sure CMR has the courage or the guts. If Willie comes back, I’m probably going to boycott the dawgs next year. I can’t take another year like this one.

Not saying that I would do any different if presented with the opportunity to make millions of dollars. But where is the loyalty to the program? Where is the loyalty to Mark Richt? Redshirt Knowshon and what do we get, only two years of what possibly could have been the best back since you know who.

One other thing to consider, say Matt Stafford had stayed at Georgia. He probably would still be the number 1 QB in the draft (probably still to the Lions) but he would have had a shot at TB or somewhere other than Detroit. Say he got hurt? You’re telling me that some booster somewhere wouldn’t love to have that kid in his company? Tough life being a legend in Athens for coming back for your senior year making $100,000 in some job that requires his name.

Are you serious? Rashad, if you stay you might not win your job back. How can GA have all these defenders going to the NFL and their defense sucks? Weston, Owens, and Atkins will be drafted in the first four rounds. Curren is more ready for the pros than Jones. Bryan Evans will be lucky to make an NFL practice squad. Unbeivelable! It just doesn’t add up!

After seeing the tease I just had to read this story. Rashad Jones thinks he is leaving early for the pros?!?! You gotta be kidding me! My lasting image of Rashad Jones when he made his infamous, pathetic attempt at bumping that Tech back out of bounds last season. The guy went 50-60 yards to score in what was the turning point in the loss. Everybody makes mistakes, but that was just a lack of effort and focus. And this year has been little better, if at all.

I am a dawg deployed in a combat zone, I agree that changes need to be made starting with a new DC. Why attack these young men when they are a reflection of the coaching they are receiving. They have not fully matured yet and could turn out to be better pro players with the proper coaching at the next level. If R.Jones graduates in dec. he should leave and chase his dream because he has a degree from uga to fall back on. Rennie could turn out to be a sam mills or london fletcher type in the NFL, but stop attacking the players because they are only doing what they are coached up to do.

I don’t think Reshad has lived up to his ‘highest rated safety’ billing that he had coming out of high school, I’m sure he would agree. That said, I wish him well at the next level. I don’t know if he’ll start in the NFL, but I think he’ll have a nice career. Even if he is a second teamer and plays special teams in the NFL he still will make a nice living. Good Luck, I say. Oh, and all of you who are going to ‘boycott’ the Dawgs next year? Do it, please. Maybe then I can move my tickets over to the sideline instead of the end zone.

I can’t believe all you people who think RC & RJ are going to be drafted.Remember these 2 guys play on the worst defense in the SEC & one of the worst in the country. There is a reason we are bad on defense—-NO TALENT except for Rambo(about the only playmaker I have seen on our defense all year). He has made more plays in 1 year than RJ has in 3yrs.

Lets compare RJ to some of our prior safeties —- Thomas Davis,Greg Blue,T. Battle,S. Jones–these guys are way better than RJ & all these guys were playmakers & were coached by the same guy who is coaching RJ.
The only conclusion I can come up with is that RJ is a little short on talent especially for the NFL

Good riddance to Reshad Jones. He is the defensive equivalent of Jasper Sanks. I’m sure when the NFL scouts get a hold of the tape demonstrating his tackling skills against Roddy Jones in 2008, they’ll jettison him immediately to the practice squad as an undrafted free agent. This guy is a clown.

I hopes Jones do go to the draft. He hasn’t really impress me much these last two years. He’ll either makes stupid foul play or gets beat. IMO, he suxs. Probably gets drafted between 4-6 RD. He would benefit his stock if he comes back, but I think he is gone. I’m also glad that Miller be gone too. He is too short and gets beat too much. Probaby won’t get drafted. Rennie C. will be drafted between 4-6 RD. That’s too bad. He is a good player and plays big heart, but his size killed his stock. It would have been good for him to come back, but he has to do what’s best for him and his family.

With all that said, the defense will have to be retool and I think these next group will be much better with B. Smith and Rambo leading the way.

Losing R. Jones is not a big blow. Flirting with the league last year made it a a for gone conclusion this year. ASk yourself this about R. Jones…..is him staying actually going to make him a better player…..it didn’t this year…..so why would it next? He’s gone. This will usher in the the Jakar Hamilton and A. Ogletree era in the D-back field

R. Curran should stay in my opinion but these guys have loved ones to think of.

we have a nice combination developing with ealey and king in the backfield, the receivers are showing promise for next year but the problem will be a qb with no experience. Would like to hear about possible DC’s that are available. This is a reach but what about the guy that left the trade school on north avenue after Paul Johnson got the HC job. He constantly applied pressure as the DC and with the young db’s we have now and the speed they have we should be able to play man coverage with the right scheme and take advantage of the talent that we bring in every year.

The fact that we’re actually having this conversation cuts to the core of the ‘Dogs overall problems. Why on earth, with two VERY important games left that could rescue what has been a very poor season, would these two guys be discussing their plans for post season?? Talk about lack of focus. As I have told others, ALL scholarships and coaching contracts should be on the table for review after the season ends. This is just another example what an undisciplined organization UGA football has become. No matter how much talent the team has, there will never be improvement until there is a more disciplined mental attitude focusing upon the task at hand.

bkbroila,
The draft advisory board doesn’t just “tell everyone what they want to hear.” In fact, lots of guys are “projected” lower than they end up going. For example, the board told Asher Allen that he’s be a “fifth to seventh round selection,” but he ended up being a 3rd rounder.

R. JonesListen, and listen well young man. I’ve played safety at a Big Ten school, and since have become a fan of the game. I’m an Sec man at heart (Big Ten payed for the Education)and I can tell you, you don’t have the intangibles yet. The best thing you can do is comeback and play your ass off next year. You will get help, because this A. Ogletree kid is the real deal at strong safety and he’ll make you look alot better. R. Jones I hate to critisize young man, but UGA has had T. Davis, G. Blue, T.Berria, S.Jones, J Phillips, and Tra Battle all make it at the next level at least one year. You came in the highest ranked and yet you are the poorest tackler, don’t get to where you supposed to be , have the slowest closing speed, and at best your an “average tackler”. Don’t disgrace yourself coming out of Uga this year. Do all the off season training you need and get to the level that you can play at. Good Luck Kid with your decision, but take this blog to heart>

Curran and Jones are both NFL-calibre safeties (I know, Curran was an LB…his size and quickness will make him a missle deep in the NFL secondary). Jones is the prototypical NFL safety, as long as he gets the coaching (which he did not get at UGA) then he will excel. Time for Rambo to step up to his rightful spot in the UGA lineup…just hopefully no under a Martinez coached defense.

Big differences in why Rennie is thinking about going pro and Reshad. Rennie has a child he needs to support and a Haitian community to help.
