Athens –- Saturday’s game against Kentucky will be the last in Sanford Stadium for 23 seniors on Georgia’s football team. Might it also be the last game between the hedges for junior linebacker Rennie Curran?
“It’s bound to run through my head once or twice,” Curran said Tuesday.
Curran is eligible to enter the 2010 NFL draft, and while he said he hasn’t made a decision on whether to leave school early, he left no doubt that he plans to seriously consider the possibility.
“It’s definitely a tough call,” Curran said. ““I have to sit down with my family. It’s something I have to pray about. . . . I’m just going to try to make the most informed decision and the smart decision.
“Honestly, I’m not leaning any way at all, because I don’t know what’s going to happen.”
A “huge” consideration, he said, is his 14-month-old daughter, Eleana, who lives in Gwinnett County.
“I’m not the normal college student,” Curran said. “Having her and seeing her and not being able to take her out and provide for her, it really weighs down on me, being a father and not being able to spend that time with her because I’m in college. I definitely want to be able to provide for her. She’s my heart. That’s definitely something that I think about in terms of that decision.”
Then, with a bright and proud smile, Curran pulled out his mobile phone and showed off a video taken Monday of him and his daughter.
In the end, Curran’s decision might come down to whether he senses that his draft status –- and earnings potential -– could benefit significantly from a senior season in college.
“That’s another thing that makes the decision even harder, when you think about . . what your weaknesses are and whether those weaknesses can be improved by another year,” Curran said. “Things like my height, I know, are not going to change.”
His height, which Georgia lists at 5-11, is the most common argument against his NFL potential.

I think he would be making a mistake but I wish him well either way. The NFL doesn’t usually draft undersized LB’s early and his tackling has left something to be desired at times this year. At any rate, his family should be his first priority and I wish him nothing but the best.

red hill is right about his size. Plus, he needs to work on his cover skills a little more as well. He needs another year of seasoning from a real defensive coordinator to increase his draft stock. A mighty fine Bulldog. He is the only underclassman on this defense that could be in consideration for the draft.

I thought that he had this great story about how his parents worked so hard to get him into college. It was about how his parents wanted him to have this diploma. Oh well, I guess all that goes out the window when money comes into the picture. But, who wouldnt be swayed by a bunch of money…I dont know maybe Tebow.
I dont know what I would do either. But it is awful impressive when a guy turns down big bucks to finish his committment.

…he is too small for LB in the pros, and I am not sure about his speed for playing strong safety. But, with his family situation it will be in his best interest to go ahead and go pro, with the best scenarion being the Canadian league if he is not drafted by the NFL. There is too much injury risk involved for him to try to play another year in college – and his size ain’t gonna improve!

Another year under Willie Martinez will not improve his draft status, if anything, it would go down. Georgia is losing 3 DL’s, which would make Curran’s job a lot harder next year. Unless Georgia hires a top notch defensive coordinator I can’t see a improvement in Georgia’s defense, therefore Rennie should do what’s best for his family. If MR is selfish enough to allow his friendship with Willie to cloud his judgement, I believe that Rennie should be able to be selfish enough to do what’s best for himself.

Rennie needs to stay another year because I don’t think he has the physical profile for a linebacker in the NFL. He could possibly enhance his standing by compiling better records on a defense that will definitely improve next year under someone other than CWM. Regardless, we love you RC and wish you the best in all things!!
PS – We’re graduating 23 seniors??? So, we have all this senior talent from top 10 recruiting classes in the past 5+ years and we have the record that we have? That just doesn’t compute folks. We all know that this team has not lived up to its potential but can you imagine the hit that 23 seniors will make for next year??? I just don’t get how bad we are NOW. Let’s clean house in the coaching department and begin to coach up the talent that we have.

Rennie, we love you and you are the best player on our D. Go pro. I agree with everyone that it is great when players finish out their “commitment” – but the amount of money you are talking about will change your daughter’s life. If the goal of every parent is to give their children the advantages that they temselves did not have, this is a no-brainer. One injury can change all of that – I don’t like to say it, but its true. While you won’t have the opportunity for the type of payday that Sam Bradford had last year, you know he must be kicking himself. He was potentially the number one qb, could have made $20+ MILION guaranteed. Now, he is so injury prone that who knows… He cost himself a lot of money. Your parents worked real hard to get you to college so your life would be better – that has happened. Cash in the ticket son, you can always come back for your degree. Thanks for being such a great, smart player. Don’t do anything stupid now.

… different era, as was Sam Mills. Vilma is not all that, and London Fletcher is way past his prime, which was not necessarily all that either. Rennie fits those “molds” and might be successful, but probably will NOT be drafted – only time will tell as to whether he stays or goes. Conventional wisdom says he goes, and probably should since, as others have said, the prospect of getting hurt is always there.
Good point on Sam Bradford – and Tebow is VERY lucky that he is not in the same boat as Bradford, after the concussion scare (not that Tebow would have lost as much as Bradford has).

Rennie doesn’t have the height…..but he’s got a bigger heart than anyone on the team, heck maybe in the SEC. And for Mark and Joe Friday stating he is “overrated”???? That tells me they are football retards. Rennie puts himself in position to make alot of tackles. Alot of linebackers couldn’t even get themselves in position to make alot of the tackles that he makes…thus he misses some because he plays wide open. He leads UGA in tackles and will until he leaves. He will make an NFL team, because like Pollack….he has heart…..you can’t grow that, teach it, or pretend to have it. And all the doubters are prime examples of those without heart….cause they have no clue of the advantage it gives a player. If you are a projected top 3 round pick, meaning you are extremely likely to get a contract, you go pro. If things don’t work out long term, you can always come back and finish your degree. As a Junior, he should be only 1 year away from finishing a degree. Tuition, room and board is certainly under 20k a year in Athens. If you don’t think he can save up that much with even a 1 year NFL career then you aren’t thinking straight. The responsible move for a father is to provide for his family, and in today’s economy, the NFL

He is way overrated, gets caught in the wash way to much, can’t scrape when contacted, and can’t get into proper position in his drops on pass coverage. A great competitor, but needs clear shots to get to his spot. Misses way too many tackles and is ineffective on blitzes. Looks for free lanes and doesn’t fill gaps and takes on a blocker, waits for contact to come to him. He’s a great Bulldog, proud of him either way, but let’s not worry about him leaving us if that’s his choice.

Rennie has been a solid player for Georgia, but I was not aware that the NFL coveted 5′ 7″ linebackers….not sure if the NFL is realistic in his future….perhaps staying and getting a degree could help provide for his daughter….I wish him the best…but I see limited upside for him if he leaves early..

Rennie is a heck of a linebacker and a leader on defense. However, his height may be a problem in the NFL. I’d like to see him come back for his senior year and I believe it would serve him well to have a degree to fall back on in case the NFL doesn’t work out.

Get out while you still can Rennie–Thanks for the memories.
His best tackling year was his freshman year. The longer players are “coached” by Martinez, the worse they tackle. We all know Martinez is coming back…so there is no coaching upside in staying.
Further, we will have the same inexperience at QB next season meaning the offense will struggle. That inexperience put our defense in bad positions this year and I don’t expect anything to change next year. You would think that our O-line would improve but we thought the same thing last year and they have regressed this year…so meh.
Take the money and run kid.

Agree with the common sentiment here, Rennie is a great college LB and a credit to the team with his hustle attitude, but I question leaving school early unless he can be confident of a reasonably high round draft position. Anything past round 4 or 5 and it becomes doubtful he’d even make the team. As a family man I understand the pressures he’s under and whatever his decision I only hope for the best for him. Thanks for picking UGA Rennie & hope to see you one more year!

This has been the problem at UGA for the past few years. The me before the TEAM all are players are more concerned with when they will play on Sundays rather than going out and winning games onSaturdays for UGA . I say good bye and dont let the door hit you in the rear if you dont have your heart in being a dawg then the team will be better off with out you. When we as fans understand that we we need to quit babying these guys and worring if they are going to leave or stay the team will be much better off with a group of players who want to be Bulldogs. The High Schools are filled with players as good if not better than #35 lets get out and find them.

crazy dawg…you are right. High schools are full of them. They play like Rennie but are 5 inches taller and all want to play for Florida, Penn State, USC, and now Tennessee.
If you were a defensive player, would you want to play for Monte Kiffin, architect of the most common defense in the NFL, or Willie Martinez, who routinely takes 5 star recruits and coaches them into 2 star performances?

Rennie is a Brookwood grad, I’m a Parkview grad, and he’s one of my favorite UGA players. That’s how darn good he is. He has almost been the entire defense at times ever since he began starting. I don’t think he can make a wrong decision. If people keep telling him he’s short, he just needs to remember two words: Jessie Tuggle.

23 more sensless arrests by the Athens/CC police Saturday. These power hungry cops go out of their way to arrest people instead of serving the public good. If you ever wonder why so many UGA players get arrested, it’s because the cops arrest you for anything.
If anyone really wants to argue that a kid having an open container of alcohol is an offense that deserves jailtime, i’d love to hear your story. It’s time we eliminate some of these useless laws from the books so that our cops can focus on actual crimes.

Curran would be crazy to stay if he gets a first or second round grade. NFL teams are always making a big deal out of smaller size linebackers, don’t ask me why. If he got hurt next year, he might not get drafted at all. Although the other side of the coin is that there may be a rookie pay scale after next year. You could see a lot of underclassmen declare which could hurt his draft projection. I hope he comes back but I won’t be surprised or upset if he leaves.

If the NFL drafted Stafford, then they’ve shown that they will draft just about anybody. Stafford would have surely benefited from another year in the university ranks. He was a prolific interception thrower at the collegiate level and even more so now at the professional level. So, if Stafford was chosen and chosen number one, then why not Curran who is probably more talented at his position at this stage?

icedawg…that is enough internet for you. That is the dumbest thing I have ever read.
The NFL draft is not solely based on your performance in college but also your measurables (height, weight, 40 time, strength, etc), your interview, and each prospective team’s view of said player’s potential.
Talent is potential. Stafford’s mix of arm strength and unreached potential made him an enticing pick early in the draft. Currently, Sanchez is much better than Stafford, but he is closer to maximizing his poential too. Wait 3 or 4 years then pass judgement on Stafford if you must. Elway was at his best at the end of his career mind you.
As for Rennie…he scores well in many of these categories but also comes up short in a few (pun intended). Look for Rashad Jones to be drafted before Rennie because he has all of the measurables. Not saying it is fair…but those NFL guys know what they are looking for.

uugggh, I do not recall Stafford having a stellar career at Georgia. No championships, a lot of hype, a lot of interceptions. We’ve had much better quarterbacks, Greene and Shockley most recently. Stafford had “potential’ at UGA, had a rocket arm but still threw tons of interceptions and did not win a championship. He was recruited and supposedly had top “talent” around him but did not deliver the goods. You’re right, time will tell in the pros. All I can go by is what I’ve seen him do and that the three years at UGA and now in Detroit has been underachievement. We’ll see. Tape measures mean nothing, performance does.

Curran is short ok, but could probibly be an awesome FB in the pros. But get real the height will put him in a lower round with most of UGA players who come out too early. Another year and get your draft status up. If not in 3-4 years at the most you will on your way out like Pope is right now along with so many others. You might better get that degree at UGA before you leave if you want to best provide for your family.

Look at Stafford & Moreno, they got their money but neither was ready. If it’s all about money, then go for it. You will never get back that senior year that will become more precious than money as you get older. Ask Hershel, was it worth it? Not many make it long term in the NFL. You’re a very good linebacker, but you are not ready. Stay humble, keep preparing.

As a Tech fan, he’s one of the few UGA players along w/ AJ that I really respect. He’s an excellent LB, but I don’t think the NFL will ever give him a fair shot b/c of his height, personally I don’t think it matters, but NFL scouts think way too much about it.
The 5′10″ LB from Wake when they won the ACC championship game was a tackling machine, but he hasn’t gotten a fair shot.

John,
Those guys you named proved that short players *can* succeed. But it doesn’t always work out that way. Remember UGA cornerback Tim Wansley? He was a game-changer for UGA but only got drafted in the 7th round. We all know that short guys (at various positions) suffer on Draft Day. They can prove themselves in training camp, but… If a taller guy has equal talent, the shorter one gets placed lower on the depth chart.

Hey thadawfdude,
Rennie is a good college linebacker but the NFL does not need a 5-5 215lb linebacker.
If Rennie had gone to FL or AL he would have been a backup. No way he starts for either one of those teams. The NFL is looking for linebackers like Spikes or McClain who are 6-5 250lbs & can stuff the run & play pass defense.Maybe the Lions will bring him in as a free agent but get real,no NFL team is going to waste a draft pick on Rennie. There are to many other talented linebackers who have NFL size & speed to think that an NFL team would actually draft Rennie.Free Agent at best & only chance he has of making it is as a special teams player.
For all you people who think he is going to be drafted in the early rounds must remember that Rennie is a good, not great college linebacker on a bad defense

So are we saying that a 6′4 LB has a better chance of making a tackle than a 5′8 LB? Logically, it doesn’t equate. One reason why Rennie is amoung the leading tacklers in the SEC is his low center of gravity, he has the ability to cut on a dime, most taller LB’s doesn’t have that ability, and the fact that because of his short stature, he’s harder to find by FB’s seeking to block him behind DL & OL that are as tall as 6′6, and difficult for a 6′6 to block a 5′8 player. I do agree that a taller LB would be more valuable in passing situations, because NFL quarterbacks are more accurate passers.

People amaze me about the whole degree thing as a reason not to go to the pros early. How much does a a year or so of college cost now? Some of you act as though players have no chance of completing their degree. Newsflash,if he signs a decent contract he should have plenty of $$$ to finish his degree, and contrary to popular belief many atheletes take advantage of the PEP and do in fact get their degrees. Not sure where UGA ranks currently, but I know a few years ago UGA consistently ranked in the top 5 in that category. If he’s projected as a 1-3rd rounder then he should probably go, any lower he should come back to raise his stock.
