ATHENS – So, Mark Richt was asked, does Georgia have a creative name for the offensive package in which the ball is snapped directly to speedy freshman Branden Smith?
“Well, I think . . . Scott Howard on the radio . . . calls that the ‘Wild Dawg,’” Richt said.
“That was Zeier,” interjected Howard, passing the credit to color analyst Eric Zeier.
“I’m all for that,” Richt said of the name.
So “Wild Dawg” it is -– Georgia’s moniker for the offensive formation that football folks generally refer to as the “Wildcat.”
“I heard someone else, I think in the NFL, was calling it something a little bit different than the Wildcat,” Richt said. “They were calling it the Wild Bronco or something. I think Wild Dawg is pretty good.” (And for the record, Richt declared the preferred spelling: “Gotta be D-A-W-G.”)
By whatever name, Smith’s role in the Georgia offense stirs excitement, especially after his 52-yard touchdown run in last week’s win over Tennessee Tech.
Richt said Smith, whose primary position is cornerback, will continue to focus on defense but can be worked increasingly into the offense in future seasons as he gains experience.
“I don’t know if we’ll get to Champ Bailey numbers as far as the amount of [offensive] plays in a game,” Richt said, “but I don’t think that’s out of the question.
“Even when we recruited [Smith], I told him, ‘Your first year, you have to learn defense. You have to spend most of your time in those meetings. To think you are going to spend some time here and some time there, it just doesn’t work that way.’ . . . We want him to get comfortable in that [defensive] role and really understand it well. It may be as early as this spring that we could spend a few days [with him] exclusively learning more offensive football.
“This first year we wanted to give him just enough [offensively] to get him lined up and get the ball in his hands. I think our coaches have done a good job with that. Hopefully it will grow as we go.”

After watching the aggressiveness of the Nebraska defense Saturday PM against Oklahoma, I am convinced that it is coaching. We are a mile off the ball in the secondary and look lost in the front seven. Nebraska challenged every inch. I had forgotten how exciting it could be to watch defense. Did you hear the crowd roar when the Blackshirts were on the field? When our defense goes out, I just cringe.

Matt Stafford will be the next Peyton Manning. Keep in mind Peyton set a record for INTs his rookie year. Calvin needs to help out his QB more and go after footballs rather than waiting for the pass to drop in his hands – I watched the whole game. Oh I’m sorry – you can’t afford Sunday Ticket, as your North Ave Trade School degree landed you a job flipping burgers. Also watched Calvin for three years while he was at Tech – he didn’t exactly help out Reggie Ballsack either. If Josh “IQ20″ Nesbitt can complete some passes due to help from “BeBe”, Ballsack should have been able to do the same with Johnson – admit it, Calvin is LAZY. Little Paul Oliver and DeMario Minter shut him down the three years he played against UGA.

I find it funny that any Techie can criticize ANYONE ELSE’s Offense while running that high school offense that is designed for less talented teams to try and compete with better teams….It is a gimmick and when CPJ does get “his” players, the team will crumble because it will be made up of a bunch of 1 and 2 star players who are sytem players that couldn’t go anywhere else.
The only reason Tech is doing well now is becaues they have a few highly recruited players that were brought in for a pro-style system
CPJ will never get another big time RB, QB, or WR

LOL !!!! Matt Stafford the next Peyton Manning. You have a serious mental problem. I will give Stafford 2 years and he will be out of football. Another Ryan Leaf. I recall reading where someone on this blog earlier this year said that Joe Cox was one of the best quarterbacks in the nation, he just didn’t play because of Stafford. Well I would venture to say that there are probably 25 high school quarterbacks in the state this year that are better than Joe Cox. COX SUCKS !!!!!! Mark Richt would give his left eye to have Josh Nesbitt as his QB this year. I repeat – Calvin needs a new QB. All you haved to do is keep the ball in bounds and Calvin will get it, unless it is thrown into the dirt as Stafford seems to do a lot.

I will chime in even though I am a Tech Man…just on the name of the offense. Wild Dawg still sounds like it is a “copy cat”…it actually is, but why name it that too. I agree with OC or Tracks…Mad Dawg or Rabid Dawg sounds a little cooler. How about “Scalded Dawg”? If you are goingto say D-A-W-G you may as well play up the “redneck” (not meant as a slur) side. “he’s runnin’ like a scalded dawg.”
OK, gotta comment on the disrespect of Calvin and the unrealistic comparisons of Stafford. While it is absolutely true Stafford and Ball are no comparison…putting Stafford on the same level as Peyton at this point in his career….let’s not get too excited. While Peyton did have a lot of INTs his rookie year, he didn’t have a #2 overall draft pick wide receiver to throw to either. CJ should easily have been picked over Russell at #1. Just sayin’ .
Can’t believe that you are calling Calvin lazy. That is just total bias because he went to Tech. He had a good to great first season in Detroit and better second season before Stafford came. The guy is an idol in Detroit. All of the sudden he is lazy? Did you see the guy hauling in Reggie’s passes? Lazy? Really? From what I saw and read of the accont of Matty Mist’s 5 INT game Sunday, he didn’t even try to get the ball to Calvin. I believe that was part of the reason for Calvin’s disgust. Matthew is a rookie and he will come around. He has a HUGE target in Calvin. Heck, if Reggie could hit him in college, surely Stafford can hit him in the pros.
Before either of them finish their first contract at Detroit, they will both want to be getting out of Motown. Too bad either of them had to end up in that pit. I would LOVE to see Matty Ice throwing to Calvin in the ATL. The Detroit franchise should move to LA….need a change in owners though.
Oh yeah! Gotta say it…

Fire the circus clowns. Sanford Stadium should be renamed THE BIG TOP. CMR has made a laughing stock out of GA Football. We are now the joke of the SEC. How could any high school ball players want to come to a school like GA when we have the worst coaching in Div 1A ball. Mark my word, remember you heard it from THE DAISY MAE that within two years Tennessee will be the team to beat in the SEC. Its all got to do with the coaching. You can watch Tenn and at least see a huge improvement from last year. At least the players know which way to run. If Head Circus Clown is not fired at seasons end we will be a laughing stock until he is.

Woah now Daisy. Far beit for me to defend a dawg coach, but just like Calvin didn’t get lazy in two years, CMR didn’t get stupid in two years either. Perhaps a little blind loyal, but he’s always been that way. And most of you dawg fans are too about your team. He needs to shake up his coaching staff, but I imagine that he is still the same recruiter he always has been. He will turn it around.
I doubt he will dominate CPJ like he did chan gailey, but he will compete. Urban will be heading to ND at the end of the season when Tebow is finished. With both of them gone uga will again be competitve with UF. I am still not a believer in Chisick(sp?) or Kiffin. Kiffin is just a motivator on roids. CMR is the more motivator than coach too, but he doesn’t have his daddy by his side that is a coach.
I am just thankful that Tech has a throwback coach. The guy doesn’t even use play sheets on the sideline. He does it all in his head. Amazing!

SEC is really weak. Yeah, right.
3 of the Top 8 teams in the BCS Rankings, are SEC teams.
Number 1 is SEC.
Number 2 is SEC.
Number 8 is SEC.
SEC is the ONLY conference with a Winning Record against other BCS Conferences plus Notre Dame at 7-4.
SEC does not have a Losing Record against ANY conference this year again.
SEC against 1-A teams is 25-6. No Conference is close even to The SEC 25-6.
SEC average BCS Ranking is also the highest among all Conferences at Number 36.
ACC is dead-last worst at Average BCS Ranking of 53.
ACC Lost 2 games to 1-AA teams; No Other Conference Lost ANY.
ACC Conference Chumpionship will include no team from the Atlantic who is Ranked at all.
A stumble by Georgia Tech will see the ACC send Miami of Florida to the only BCS Bowl the ACC will produce a team for. And, it only because it is guaranteed 1.
41-43 that is Georgia Tech’s combined record of all its opponents on its “schedule.”
41 wins 43 losses for all opponents Georgia Tech plays this season.
Nice.
SEC is really weak.
I know, right ?
53-36 is the combined record of all the opponents Georgia plays this season.
Notice any difference ?
Alabama, Mississippi State, Georgia and Arkansas all 4 are in the Top 6 Toughest Schedules for 2009.
Florida is Number 17 SoS 2009.
LSU, South Carolina, and Auburn all are in the Top 25 Toughest Schedules too.
Georgia Tech is 17 places WORSE than all 8 of those SEC teams in the Top 25 SoS.
Georgia Tech would have the 9th easiest schedule in The SEC.
Tennessee’s SoS is WORSE than Georgia Tech’s.
Duke, Boston College, North Carolina State, and Maryland are all 25 places WORSE than the worst SEC Strength of Schedule for 2009 of all games they play.
2nd ACC team, either Georgia Tech or Miami of Florida will play in the Gator Bowl against hapless Notre Dame, as the 2nd ACC team.
1st ACC team will play hapless Pennsylvania State in the Orange Bowl with no one there and no one watching as the 1st ACC team.
3rd and Last ACC team, is Virginia Tech who will play in the Peach Bowl, nice.
ACC has NO OTHER TEAM.
ACC has a LOSING RECORD in Bowl Games at 83-84-2.
SEC in Bowl Games is 190-149-9 for the Best Record in Bowl Games of ALL Conferences and LAST SEASON ONCE AGAIN SAW The SEC have the MOST BOWL WINS.
SEC also has the HIGHEST BOWL WINNING PERCENTAGE of ALL Conferences at .559.
SEC plays in the Most Meaningful Bowls against the Most Meaningful Opponents.
SEC plays this season for the National Championship.
SEC has NEVER LOST the National Championship Game.
SEC has WON the MOST BCS National Championship Games.
SEC has the highest attendance.
98-112-1 is Big Ten (11) Record in Bowl Games.
46-47 is Big XII Record in Bowl Games.
110-93-5 is PAC-10 in Bowl Games including playing Lousy Big 10 every Rose Bowl.
Georgia Tech is ranked WORSE than TCU, Boise State and Cincinnati.
Georgia Tech plays NO RANKED TEAMS in the LAST 6 games prior to BCS Final Poll.
Top PAC-10 team is ranked WORSE than 3 SEC teams.
2nd and ONLY Big XII team behind Texas to be RANKED AT ALL in the BCS Rankings from the Big XII is Number 19 Oklahoma State.
Top Big Ten (11) team is ranked WORSE than 3 SEC teams.
Oklahoma is Number 33.
Tennessee is Number 36.
Notre Dame is Number 42.
Michigan is Number 73.
Georgia is Number 31 in the Computer Polls and plays 7-3 Auburn at Home this weekend in The South’s Oldest Rivalry in Football. Auburn is Number 25 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll. Kentucky is our next opponent after Auburn. Kentucky is Number 45 and having a good year. Georgia Tech faces Georgia at Bobby Dodd Stadium in UGA’s last game before the bowls this season. Georgia is 26-20-3 against Tech at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Bobby Dodd is a college DROP-OUT of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. 59-37-5 is UGA record over Georgia Tech and seeks the 60th Win against Georgia Tech. Bobby Dodd Stadium at Grant Field. Why would a Southern School name its Field for the Commander in Chief of the Union Army who sent the North to Burn Atlanta in the War of Northern Aggression ?

Here is the thing so absurd about Mark Richt: He said people are coming up to him at church telling him they are praying for him and support him. His response: things must be worse than I think they are. He better get a reality check…things are worse than he thinks they are. (has nothing to do with this article…sorry) CMR heavily endorses Bobo to Memphis (kindly sending him on his way) CMR takes over the offense COMPLETELY then ships ol Willie out on his way to another c.michigan caliber team because that is where he has belonged this whole time. then CMR makes a controversial but extremely successful hire in Tommy Tubberville to DC. hold on now, the ol river boat gambler won the 93 nat champ as miami’s DC and then went to Tx A&M as their DC the following year and lead them to a 10-0-1 record that year. pay him a cool 1.6 a year making him a happy man. CMR in charge of the offense and Tubbs in charge of the D can you imagine the recruits that could bring

The formation should be aptly named after the only true wild dog- the Dingo. When the Dingo begins to form , we could get some band or student section members to play that great Aborigine/woofin music on a bunch of Jew’s harps. Right out of Quigly Down Under. I’m tellin’ you that it would be great and original. We don’t need to copy someone’s Wild Cat formation name. Dawgs-give’em the Dingo!!

I seriously think that “Tubberbunch” would be an excellent choice for DC. He would probably be more accessible and come at a much lower price than Kirby or Muschamp. When he was at Allbarn, they generally had very respectable to excellent defenses. Also he might be an added influence to Bobo to run the “Damn” ball.
