ATHENS — The final question of Mark Richt’s press conference on Tuesday: There’s sort of a sentiment that maybe you’re too nice of a guy to make the hard decision if it came to that. Do you think people misread your leadership?
Thought you might like to read Richt’s full reply:
“Oh, I don’t know. I’m not reading that because I’m not reading anything, but I guess you are saying that’s what is out there. Coach [Bobby] Bowden made that comment way back when I got the job.
“And let’s face it: We’ve had the best winning percentage in the history of Georgia football. We’ve done pretty well. This year we have not, OK? We are averaging, you know, 10 wins a year and won the SEC twice, and [Georgia] hadn’t won one in 20 years. So it’s not like we’ve just been floundering around. Now, this year we have been, let’s face it. And I don’t like it.
“People that know me well or the team or the coaches -– they know that I’ve got another edge to me that maybe I don’t show publicly all the time. Maybe that’s what the public wants to see. But if you are going to be accused of something, being accused of being a nice guy is not one of the worst things to be accused of. ”
Richt’s record at Georgia is 86-26, a .768 winning percentage. Vince Dooley was 201-77-10 as UGA coach, a .715 winning percentage.
———————————-
Talking about the decision to start Caleb King at tailback this week because of freshman Washaun Ealey’s struggles in pass-protection, Richt recalled another freshman running back who struggled initially as a blocker.
“That’s one of the main reasons why Knowshon [Moreno] ended up redshirting [in 2006],” Richt said. “He was struggling at [pass-protection], and we had three veteran guys, three very proven guys. So if we played Knowshon, we thought, how many reps is the guy going to get?
“He might have gotten a lot more if we had tossed it to him a couple of times,” Richt added with a laugh. “But this time around we are playing the freshman and kind of taking some of the lumps.”
————————————
We pause here for a couple of links, if you missed ‘em: Here’s a story on the furor about what’s wrong with the 4-4 Dogs, and here’s a notebook with items on how the decisions went down to keep Joe Cox at quarterback and to start King at tailback.
————————————-
Georgia used the season’s fifth different combination on the offensive line last week and -– barring injury -– might stick with this one for a while.
Richt and Mike Bobo thought the line’s play improved, leading to relative success in the running game against the vaunted Florida defense.
“Hopefully we can stay with the same group,” Bobo said after practice Tuesday night. “Clint [Boling] got banged up at the end of the game, but it looks like he’ll be able to go. Hopefully we can get two weeks of continuity up front.”
Boling suffered a knee contusion.
Last week’s line: Boling at left tackle, Cordy Glenn at left guard, Ben Jones at center, Chris Davis at right guard and Josh Davis at right tackle.
————————————
Much has been made, and appropriately so, of how many turnovers Georgia has committed this season: 21 in eight games. But just as problematic is how few turnovers Georgia has claimed from its opponents: 6.
Of the six opponent turnovers, five are interceptions and just one – one! – a fumble recovery.
Opponents have fumbled 10 times, and the Dogs have recovered but one. By comparison, opponents have claimed eight of Georgia’s 14 fumbles.
“Why is the ball bouncing that way? I don’t know,” Richt said. “I’ve studied the film, and for whatever reason, when the ball is on the ground, it ends up closer to one of their guys than our guys. Why’s that happening? I don’t know. It’s just happening. But that’s football.”
————————————-
Saturday’s game against Tennessee Tech will be Georgia’s first in Sanford Stadium in 35 days. Seems longer.

AS A GRAD AND LETTERMAN, MARK RICHT IS NOW 2-8 AGAINST FLORIDA WHO IS IN THE EASTERN DIVISION.
HE JUST GOT HIS ASS KICKED BY THE KITTY UP IN KNUCERSVILLE WHO IS IN THE EASTERN DIVISION.
HE’S WON 2 SEC TITLES IN 10 YRS. AND NEEDED HELP TO GET IN THE GAME, LOSSED TO FLORIDA IN THOSE YRS. THAT WE WON THE TITLE.
I WAS RAISED IN JAX, FL AND GATOR FANS THINK OF UGA LIKE WE THINK OF TECH. THAT’S ABOUT TO CHANGE AS WELL WHEN PAUL JOHNSON GOES UP 2 LOVE.
LOOK, WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE ABOUT RICHT AS A PERSON. BUT WHEN HE STARTS TALKING IN THE PRESSER AFTER THIS YRS. FLORIDA BEAT DOWN THAT “WOMEN WANT LOVE, MEN WANT RESPECT”, I SAY WHAT IN THE HELL IS GOING ON?
THE GUY IS PAID TO PUT A SOLID TEAM ON THE FIELD THAT GIVES US THE BEST CHANCE TO WIN. THAT AINT HAPPENIN THIS YEAR AND IT’S NOT THE FIRST TIME IT’S HAPPENED. IF YOU GO THRU RICHT’S RESUME IN HIS TENURE, THERE’S LOSSES ALL OVER THE PLACE THAT YOU HAVE TO SCRATCH YOUR HEAD AND SAY IS THIS EVER GOING TO CHANGE AT UGA. FOR STARTERS, THE GUY LOSSED TO RON ZUKE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD 2 OF 3.
SO, UGA LIKES TO COMPARE RICHT TO THE GOFF AND DONNAN YRS.
THE GUY CAN RECRUIT, THAT MORE THAN ANYTHING IS UNDISPUTEABLE.
SO, TO ALL YOU ATLANATA GA GRADS THAT DONT’T LIKE TO HEAR THIS, DONT JUMP ME FOR GRAMMAR IN THIS TAKE… I DON’T TAKE THE TIME TO SPELL CHECK MY BLOGS ON THE AJC

You are absolutely correct CMR your record speaks for it’s self.
With that I am living in the past comment being said. Someone in the media needs to ask CMR “ what was your record under Brian” mad dawg/I know how to make a half time adjustment ‘’ Van Gorder” Compared to his record with “soft zone “ Willie.

I still want to know the questions asked in the “exit interviews”
Either they aren’t evaluating talent properly or they aren’t getting what they were out of it with Van Gorder. I’m fairly certain Van Gorders defenses never forgot how to defend play action or forgot about the Quarterback draw.
The Georgia defense has become a laughing stock and it’s not getting better.
You get this with 2 upper classmen safeties…..really?
Players tend to play the way they are coached… these players have not been coached particularly well.
It’s not like they are just losing some close games and it’s just a few fixable items…. they do nearly everything poorly. Basic fundamental football is beyond this team.

Is anyone at UGA listening to the fans on these blogs? Tons of emotion, yes, but a lot of fans watch a lot of football or played a lot of football. As I read the press, it seams they are oblivious to what the fans are saying or giving it lip service at best. If you read through the blog posts one elemental point becomes clear, the fans recognize that change is needed. Change, some kind of change, quarterback, coach, strategy…something that is different. Beating the same old strategy is just not working….DUH!

CMR,
I have had a chance to meet you in person many times with my wife and I . We always walk away very impressed with your sincere heart felt words and the way you treat all fans .I think you are a true 1st. class husband ,father and a head coach. What a job, influencing that group of young men that call you coach and some that look to you as a father figure that they have never had in there lives.
The bible talks about everyone has there season and how we all go threw valleys but we never stay there .We keep climbing to get to the top of that mountain. Keep this mind, the deeper the valley the higher the mountain top will be and what a view there will be there waiting on us when we get there.

The failure to be prepared for games and to react to what the other team is doing did not start this year or last. The coaching failure has been going on for a long team. The talent level has been such that for the most part it could achieve without coaching. Nowwith a lot of talent but not the right mix, it can’t. This coaching staff is bad top to bottom. The only success they’ve had is recruiting and soon that will end. Save Georgia football, we need changes.

what is their winning percentage in relevant loseable games?
Playing teams like Georgia Southern and winning doesn’t matter. Getting your head kicked in by Florida and Tennessee almost every single year does. Then tack on 45-42… the abomination against Alabama… the West Virgina Sugar Bowl…. how the heck do you justify keeping Martinez? Oh they beat a Hawaii team that they outweighed by 7 tons????

It’s a lot of fun seeing the Redneck Nation in such a tizzy about this season. I like the Dog’s, I really like Richt. It’s you fans that are the problem. After the season, certainly Martinez is gone and maybe Bobo. Back to the “Nation”. You people act like your Alabama, USC, or sorry, Florida. One national title in what, 40-50 years? The nation had better look at what Saint Vince did and what Richt is doing. The Richt record kicks Vince where it hurts. By the way, nothing lasts forever but it will be fun seeing Tech whip the Dog’s like, well a Dog, in a few weeks.

He said it, 10 wins. That’s all we’ll ever get with him. He is a 2 loss coach and the SEC Championship is as far as we can go with Richt. Been there 9 years now and we are on the decline. New coaches coming in to schools and leading their teams to National Titles. Out coaching Richt in every aspect of the game. I like Richt but come on. Can he get Georgia to a National Title even if he makes changes in assistants ??

I came to Atlanta in 1973. During the 70s and even 80s, in SEC, Alabama was in a class by itself. Everyone else (UGA, FL, Tennessee) were in a different league. UGA fans were reasonably happy as long as Vince Dooley won his share of battles against Florida and Tennessee, and beat Ga Tech regularly. He did this well and everyone was happy. We also did not have 24 x 7 sports coverage keeping fans frenzied. Times have changed..

If you have any sense you know that Richt is not the problem. His assistants are underachieving. He gives them full reign to do what they do and they are just not that good. They are very average coordinators. I understand he is in charge of them and I guess they are going to force him to do something b/c they just can’t put a good scheme together. Go Dawgs!!

How much fun is it a for a Tech fan to see the Bulldog Nation in such a tizzy. I never stop being amazed at how you people think something is wrong if you don’t win EVERY game. Who do you think you are Alabama, USC, Florida? You have a very good coach, AND a good man. Drop a couple of coordinators (Bobo and Martinez), and you will be fine. Vince Dooly could not tote Mark Richt’s headset cable. Look at the numbers people. After Tebow leaves Florida, “yall” will be in the mix again.

You guys can say what you want about CMR’s record when compared to Coach Dooley. Dooley did much more with less talent. So what…CMR was at the helm for two SEC championships! With the talent the Dawggs had on those teams we should been competing for a national title! The Dogs have grown complacent and undisciplined.I can not believe how flat they came out against thier #1 rivary!! If the fans wanted an average team that just wins every year without any chnace of a national Title we would have kept Jim Donan! Anyone watching the Dogs over the past 3 years can see that they have gotten worse each year even if they won more games. There record is not inducative of how well they have played. The defense is a frigging joke. This team is the worst defensive team in the SEC probably of all NCAA teams! Coach Richt is a nice guy but he will never win a National Title because he’s to nice to fire Willie Martinez….and Bobo also while you are cleaning house. TOO MUCH TALENT TO BE THIS BAD. Forget the stars and recruit fro heart and talent!!

GT grad… interestiong stats… a couple of points:
1 You should use all 9 years not the last five if you are going to speak to his record.
2. Richt has winning records vs most of UGAs rivals, Alabama, Tenn. Auburn and GT.
3. Georgia has finished in the top 10 6 out of the last 8 years including 2 #2 finishes.
4. GT is certainly one of the easy OOC schools you are refering too since he is 7 of 8. Tech is one of the schools not ranked in the top 30 we play every year. This year will be the first.
5. If you did the same analysis on every school the results over the same period of time the results would be similar.
As the old saying goes… there are lies, damn lies and statistics.

Mark Richt: The perfect coach if your top coaching competition in the SEC East is Ron Zook and Phil Fulmer about to be fired. Now? Not so much. Those SEC titles are fast becoming a fading memory. But, hey, keep talking up those 10 wins, that winning percentage, etc. The longer Richt sticks around, the easier the East will be for Kiffen and Meyer to decide.

Honestly, the state of Georgia is blessed to have two of the best college football coaches in the game. CMR has a career winning percentage of 76.79% since he began at UGA. CPJ’s all-time record is 124-44, for a winning percentage of 73.81%. HOWEVER … if you take out Johnson’s first year at the Naval Academy (when he went 2-10), the winning percentage for the rest of his career shoots up to 78.21%.
Hopefully the Bulldogs get their program straightened out again next year. It will be good for both schools if the rivalry is more competitive. After all, regardless of who wins, both teams’ strength of schedule will benefit from playing a higher rated opponent. This ultimately will mean higher rankings and potentially better bowl bids for both teams.

Tenn 5-4
FLorida 2-7
LSU 3-3
Aub 5-3
BAMA 1-1 (Nick Saban Era)
Overall Record of 16-18. Not as impressive as you thought.

And vs opponents ranked in the top 10 Richt is 6-9.

Enter your comments here On CBS college football, Randy Gross said UGA did not look physical and was an overrated program. When you look at other teams and their players fill out their uniforms and our line looks like they been in Allen’s drinking, you start to wonder if our conditioning program is what it should be. PLease CMR start over with a new staff and get these players in shape.

A previous poster mentioned CMR might make the muc-neded staffing changes with “prodding” from Damon Evans. Why should Evans have to “prod” Richt to do anything? If that’s what needs to be done, we better be looking for a new head coach, as well as all assistants. This problem runs much deeper thatn we think-

I dont know why I continue to read all these blogs from time to time. But, the one thing I know is that most, if not all, of the folks that comment here are not professionals in the sport of football. You are amateurs. Every pee wee baseball coach thinks he knows the sport but can’t coach it at the highest level. It’s a piece of cake to sit in the sidelines and make a few comments that sounds like you know what you are talking about…but you have no clue what it takes to coach at this level.
It’s ok to not be happy about results lately but gimme a break, look at the winnig % of this coaching staff and the championships we have won in the last 9 years…look at the whole body of work. Did they forget to coach? No. Do you think CMR doesnt see some of the things you see? Sure he does. At the end, he will do what he believes is best for the program. And each year CMR and each coach will be evaluated and that’s how it goes in everything.
You guys like Saban? Myers? Follow their programs then. And take your vile comments with you. I am proud of the character and integrity Coach Richt has. And he has proven that he is a good coach as well.
Sure we want to win every year and be great. Look across the nation and you will see that it is not reasonable to stay at the top. There are peaks and valleys when you compete nationally at the highest level.
It’s great to want our Bulldogs to be great, but if you can’t support or contribute to your program in a positive way, you are embarrasing yourself and our program. I wouldn’t want you on my team.

Too bad Mother Teresa died. She had “plenty of character’ and was viewed as “a great person”, would you have wanted her as coach?? With Georgia’s schedule I’m sure she could beat Vandy, Kentucky,South Carolina and a Homecoming Set Up. Hey Eric, Have you ever been President, a Senator, a Representative, Governor, Supreme Court Justice, U.N. Ambassador, head of a Fortune 500 Company? I’m betting the answer is NO!!! I’m also betting you have criticized EVERY ONE of those positions. Trust me, college football coaches are guys not good enough to be in the NFL after college, they majored in a GIMME program, hooked on as a graduate assistant, hung around longer, kissed some butt and eventually became a position coach, left for an OC or DC position at a smaller school, became a head coach at a Newberry in South Carolina(or the like), went back to a larger school repeated the process, had already picked up a mentor who really liked them and by 40-43 they are Head Coaches. Trust me, it ain’t brain surgery or nuclear physics. If you compiled above a 2.5 with a REPRESENTATIVE MAJOR and went on to have a good career–You are way over qualified to criticize a college football coach.
Think Ron Zook is smarter than you?? How about Tommy Bowden, Terry Bowden, Rich Rodriguez?? I’ve NEVER met you, but I’m saying you are smarter. Going to argue with me??

Are you kidding me. Tech wasn’t even a consensus NC winner in 1990. The poll that mattered didn’t have Tech #1.You asked if you are supposed to be scared by my rhetoric…..I really don’t care. All I do is state the facts. Just because you Tech fans live in a dream world and interpret them the way that makes you feel better about yourselves is your problem. Believe me your team is not that good. Average at best. Tech will not win the ACC, and definitely WILL NOT beat Georgia. In looking at the Tech schedule…I see Tech losing at least five games and possibly six. I predict that Tech will lose to Georgia by at least 17 points……Tech is a team that actually dropped out of the SEC because they thought they were better than everyone else and where did it get Tech?…relegated to a second tier team in the ACC. When Tech consistently has double digit win seasons, wins the ACC, and plays in meaningful BCS bowl games you’ll be able to pound your chest and tell me and everyone else that will listen how great Tech is until then….the Tech football program is irrelevant!
