Something a bit different today. . . .
My AJC colleague Matt Dempsey has been crunching numbers and has come up with some interesting perspective on where A.J. Green stands in the UGA record book.
Based on Green’s statistics for the first seven games of the season, Matt found six UGA single-season or career lists on which the super sophomore could reach the top five by the end of the regular season.
Here’s what he came up with (Green statistics are through the Vanderbilt game). Hope you enjoy:
Pass Receptions, season
Name Number Year
1. Brice Hunter 76 1993
2. Terrence Edwards 59 2002
2. Brice Hunter 59 1994
4. Mohamed Massaquoi 58 2008
NR A.J. Green 41 2009
Note: With 17 more receptions on the year, Green will join Mohamed Massaquoi as having one of the top four seasons of all time for Georgia catching the ball. Nineteen more in five games and he’ll be in the top two.
Yards gained receiving, season
Name Yards Season
1. Terrence Edwards 1004 2002
2. Brice Hunter 970 1993
3. A.J. Green 963 2008
4. Mohamed Massaquoi 920 2008
5. Hines Ward 900 1996
NR A.J. Green 682 2009
Note: Green just needs 281 yards to match his impressive freshman season. That’s only 56 yards a game for the last 5 games of the regular season.
Yards gained receiving, career
Name Yards Career
1. Terrence Edwards 3093 1999-2002
2. Fred Gibson 2884 2001-2004
3. Brice Hunter 2373 1992-1995
4. Mohamed Massaquoi 2282 2005-2008
5. Lindsay Scott 2098 1978-1981
NR A.J. Green 1645 2008-
Note: Green has a bit more to go to bump into the top 5 for career receiving yardage. 454 yards or 91 yards a game will get him there.
Touchdown receptions, season
Name TD Year
1. Terrence Edwards 11 2002
2. Terrence Edwards 9 1999
2. Brice Hunter 9 1993
2. Hason Graham 9 1994
5. Mohamed Massaquoi 8 2008
5. A.J. Green 8 2008
5. Lamar Davis 8 1941
NR A.J. Green 6 2009
Note: Two more touchdowns will give Green the same total as last year. If he can pull off six more in five games, he’ll have more touchdowns in one year than anyone in Georgia history.
Touchdown receptions, career
Name TD Career
1. Terrence Edwards 30 1999-2002
2. Fred Gibson 20 2001-04
3. Brice Hunter 19 1992-94
4. Hason Graham 16 1992-94
4. Juan Daniels 16 1993-96
4. Mohamed Massaquoi 16 2004-08
NR A.J. Green 14 2008-
Note: Massaquoi was prolific during his time in Athens, but Green may knock him off the career top 5 list for touchdowns in a career. Green needs three touchdowns in the next five games to pass Massaquoi, Juan Daniels and Hason Graham.
Most Receptions by a Sophomore
Name Receptions Year
1. Brice Hunter 76 1993
2. Terrence Edwards 53 2000
3. Andre Hastings 48 1991
NR A.J. Green 41 2009
Note: Green already owns the record for most receptions by a freshman with 56 last year. Brice Hunter is unlikely to lose the top spot for receptions by a sophomore. Green needs just eight more receptions to land in the top three. Thirteen catches will move him past Terrence Edwards into the top two.

Vance was arrested for driving with a learner’s permit? Anybody else read that article. I guess he’s not quite coordinated enough to pass the test. Maybe after Martinez gets canned this year he can take a job with Nathan’s and help out some of these dogs in need. Richt, I also love the hypocrisy of suspending the last player to get arrested for a traffic violation (the scooter guy) but not suspending Vance…Florida is this weekend, after all!

Is it just me? Or could Urban Meyer and PapaJohn’s John Schnatter be twins separated at birth?

Can anyone imagine how many receptions and yards T. Edward and F. Gibson would have had if they could have been even remotely consistent? There could have been some really impressive numbers but at the days of drop U. are now gone?

AJ will not be a big factor Saturday. He may score one BUT that might be the only UGA score all day. Our FG kicker will shank a couple ( like he did in jx in 08 ) and that WILL BE a big factor. He is a Florida native and last year, he choked big time.
By second half ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Meyer will play his subs. UGA will look pathetic, flustered, desperate and it will be very ugly toward the end and when the gun sounds, we UGA grads will say “thank goodness, the annual beatdown is over “for another year.
IF Dr. Adams wants this to continue ………….then he will not implement change. Simple.
Go Dogs!!!

Jaildawg….. He isn’t suspended because he hasn’t the trouble that the other has had. Also, I think it’s stupid that anyone is making a big deal over this. It’s a traffic violation. Who cares!!! We have a much more difficult situation this weekend. CMR should not have suspended him. Get a life!!

I can understand why fans could be in awe of Fl and Bama ranked number 1 and 2 because supposedly geniuses that have the inside on sports see it and vote that way..but why do you local sportswriters agree? Look at both of their schedules. Fl played Troy, Charleston Southern and will play FIU, and big deal win over Ms St. Bama played FIU, North Texas and upcoming Chattanooga. The two teams do not even play each other in regular season. Who are the sissys of these athletic departments tha sets up these opponents? At least, UGA had the guts to play Oklahoma State. I can see one Div 1A school for everyone to play as your mulligan, but 3 of them? And you expect me to crown you number one? PLAY SOMEBODY.. What a crock of manure

I have been a Georgia fan my whole life, and the soft zone is killing me. I yell shout and scream at the tv when Ga plays. Surely I am not alone in my intense frustration with our absurd defensive philosophy. Am I an Idiot for thinking I could coach better than soft willie, or are our top rated recruiting classes idiots, help!
