Gators favored by 16; does the bye week matter?

A few notes on Monday of Georgia-Florida week:

— Oddsmakers have made Florida a whopping 16-point favorite over Georgia on Saturday, even though the Gators have won their past three games by an average of 7.7 points — 10 over Mississippi State, 3 over Arkansas and 10 over LSU.

— As you know, Georgia is coming off a bye week and Florida is not. So here’s the data on open dates as they relate to the Georgia-Florida series: Georgia is 3-2 vs. Florida when coming off a bye week, while Florida is 14-4 vs. Georgia when coming off a bye week. The Bulldogs’  most recent win over the Gators -– in 2007 -– followed a UGA open date. That’s the only time since 1991, until this year, that Georgia had an open date before the Florida game. Florida, on the other hand, has had a bye week before playing Georgia 13 of the past 16 years.  For whatever all of that is worth.

– Mark Richt was asked Sunday about  the impact  of the bye week. “With this game or series, I think there’s probably a little bit too much made of it,” he said.  “Georgia, quite frankly, hasn’t had many open dates [before the game] and Florida has, but I don’t know if that has been the biggest factor other than whoever’s better that day.”  He added: “It’a always nice to have a break, no doubt about it, and you hope you can turn it into a positive for your football team. But there is just no guarantee of that.”

– Overall, Georgia is 11-3 under Richt following an open date, including 1-0 vs. Florida.

— Just to put Florida’s defense in perspective: It has allowed only four touchdowns this  season – two rushing, two passing. (The other two touchdowns scored against the Gators were on interception returns.) Florida is No. 1 in the nation in total defense, No. 2 in scoring defense, No. 2 in pass defense. Said Richt:  “They’ve got guys at just about every spot that are better than your average bears, you know.  They are just going to be a great challenge for us, no doubt.”

— Among the many strengths of the Gators’ defense: cornerbacks Joe Haden and Janoris Jenkins. “If you had to draft two corners, I know the two I’d pick for my team,” coach Urban Meyer said. “And we got them.”

— Tim Tebow had perhaps his worst game as a Gator last week, and that did absolutely nothing to lower Richt’s regard for him.  “I’ve said Tebow is one of the finest  players in the history of college football,” Richt said Sunday, “and my opinion of him hasn’t changed a bit.”  Tebow, you’ll recall, accounted for five touchdowns vs. Georgia last season — three rshing and two passing.

Yeah, I can’t see Bobo lighting up the best D in the nation…or the 75th best D, for that matter. And we’re gonna need points to match the numbers Meyer is capable of putting up on Willie.

We dawg fans need to take comfort in that UGA plays by the rules and in general the football team is filled with fine young men who help out in the community and call their grandmother’s and stuff like that.

Forget the national championship, SEC championship, or even major bowl games. Our players are very nice young men that make GA proud.

When Bobo calls the same play 6 or 7 times in a row, just remember that he’s a very upstanding gentlemen with 5 children. He played for the dogs by the way and we need to be loyal to our own.

When Willie’s D gives up 45 point’s this weekend we can take comfort in his friendship with Mark Richt. How nice for them to be so close for so many years. It’s really a tribute to the program that we foster such well being.

Peace and love to everyone.

Florida has looked beatable lately, and we actually resembled a college football team against Vandy (but, of course, it was VANDY). I think the bye week will help us… and I hope they spent a good deal of the time just getting back to basics and fundemental blocking and tackling! I expect the Gators defense will just be to much for Cox and Co. however, and, being Tebow looked almost human last week, he’ll probably play out of his freakin’ mind against the Dawgs. In any case, I’ll be cheering for my beloved Dawgs as loud as I can!!! Go Dawgs!!!

UGA vs. Florida game: Gators favored by -16.5, which essentially means that Vegas thinks UGA will lose to Florida by 30 points. What do have to say about that Dawgs? Well, what’s coming from the sidelines isn’t working. Saying Richt is the best coach ever at UGA is arguable, but ultimately irrelevant, as there are better coaches to be hired. Coaches who can take our players, develop them, and legitimately put this program in the national championship conversation every year. Coaches who will bring power football back to UGA. Coaches who give their loyalty to the football program and the university, not college roommates who can’t perform.

Replace your UGA gear and pen names with Richt’s name and logo.

I would love to beat UF, then run the table and hopefully UF looses to a stout S.Carolina team who then looses to Tennessee. The we play for the SEC championship………

HOWEVER, if that were to happen, Martinez and Bobo would get to keep their jobs. Thats bad. SO.. hopefully we win and then loose to some other teams so that the OC and DC are for sure fired at seasons end.

The 16 points are to try to get people to put money UGA that is it. Vegas knows nobody thinks UGA can win. So, Vegas had to make the line something people will bite on. I think UGA has a shot. A slim one be it, but they strap it on just like the Gators and are rested.

My heart too says we should have a chance this year with the off date and they way UF has been playing. The head says that our defense is a great cure for many other teams offensive struggles and our offense is so unimaginative that we probably will not do much against a top 5 defense. 16 points is probably about right. I use this analogy to say this: should UGA win Saturday, I worry that we are going to win a battle and lose a war. I’m talking to you, CWM.

Remember when we won the SEC in basketball in 2008? All it did was delay the inevitable another year. I so badly want to win Saturday…but I am worried that if we do, it may delay the inevitable.

Sweet Willie made Steve Garcia look like Montana, then he made Compton look like Elway. I know Tebow feels lousy but he must be licking his chops to play against the soft cover-2 look that Willie loves.

By the way, From the quotes I have been reading none of the players seemed concerned about making sure they watched the UF/MSU game Saturday. I read where some went to the Bama game, some went to the Texas game and some went out with friends. Well I stayed home and scouted UF. Based on the play and stats that I’ve seen this season, GA doesn’t stand a very good chance of scoring, much less winning against UF. GA is very one-dimensional and UF can key on the passing game, while their speed will shut down any chance of a running game. GA’s defense couldn’t stop even lowly UT, so they’re surely not going to even slow down the best offensive player in the nation. I know that anything can happen in college football, and this series used to be testimony to that. But that was a different era when GA played physically on both sides of the ball. I’m afraid this might be a 44-0 or 50-3 game. I hope I’m wrong but I think it’ll be ugly.

Georgia always talks about tradition… What tradition? One national Championship in 30 years is not something to brag about! Especially; with the likes of top powers like Southern Cal and Florida in the hunt year in and year out for the National Championship. Not to mention that every Top Recruit across the nation dreams of playing for Southern Cal and Florida. Georgia needs to Step Up to the plate and take action to regain National Prominence and stop thinking that Georgia is the God of Football schools. For Crying out load… We need a make over from top to bottom to change our thinking and create a better outcome for Georgia’s football program…. New Coaches and Administrators, New atmosphere i.e. new updated logo, uniforms, marketing so forth, Recruit more nationally from the West coast; Midwest not just predominately the east coast. I wish I could be optimistic, but I’m not. These Dawgs have a slew of problems that aren’t gonna be fixed simply by having a weekend off. The problem remains coaching and their ability to put the players in a position to have success. It seems like UGA does more to help other teams versus their own players. The safeties play so deep, it’s like playing 11 men with nine. Dawg defenders allow receivers a free release and let opposing quarterbacks make easy conversions. Mediocre QB’s have career days against the Dawgs (i.e. Garcia, Mallet and Crompton.) The predictability of this team makes it easy for other teams to exploit the many UGA weaknesses. I really hope I’m wrong and the Dawgs finally put it all together. But I would be very surprised if it happens. This team needs a serious infusion of ass kicking coaches. And CMR, please don’t demote Willie and make him secondary coach…he needs to go…period.

The bye week does matter. In 2004 the Dawgs won and neither team had a bye before the game. In 2007 the Dawgs won. They had a bye week and Florida did not. All the other years Florida had a bye week before the game and the Dawgs played the week before the game. There is no doubt that the players and coaching staff are burned out after playing 7 straight games without a week off then having to play a good team like Florida who just had two weeks to rest and get ready. Florida is playing like a tired and beat up team right now and that was the excuse they used two years ago when the Dawgs won. They will be using it again after this years game. They should go long to A.J. Green early and often. Spread the offense and put Thomas Carlton in the backfield. Need somebody fast back there that can hit some holes. It is always fun to be at the Jacksonville Landing after a Bulldog victory. That has not happened enough over the last 16 years it will happen this year. See Y’all down there.

This game is going to get ugly!

Really thought UGA was going to dominate – escpecially after 2005 – what the heck has happened to your team? This program is sliding – 2009 is merely providing clarity as Stafford and Moreno are not their to cover up the issues.

Here is what is going to happen:

Offense
– UGA will attempt to establish the run by coming out passing.
(this is really the best thing for UGA as if they attempt to run first – they will find themselves 3 and out and in predictable passing situations)
– Defense – UGA gas got to contain the DIVE play first – then focus on the ends.

FLORIDA
Offense – Establish the ground game – and the game is over.
Defense – contain Green and the run game – game is over.

Prediction – IF UGA can move the ball early by passing – will open up some running plays – UGA can hang in there.

If Florida stops UGA early – and scores early by pounding and a few throws to keep DB’s and LB’s honest – this game will be over quickly -and it could get out of hand…..like last year.

Funny. I just stumbles across a conversation I had with a buddy about the ‘08 GA vs Fla game. It echos the same issues we are having on D, this year = CWM has not made progress and must go…Here were my comments about our D from the note….
*******************

Our D has me a little concerned, especially with the fact that Florida can score quick. We have to control the clock on O and try and keep Tebow and company off the field. We simply cannot make the defensive mistakes against FLorida that we made against LSU. Must tackle better, must get constant, quick pressure with our front 4, can’t have mental lapses with our defensive passing schemes. We appear to do better against teams that try to run the corner and not up the gut. Florida is that kind of team, so hopefully that works to our advantage.

All I got to say is WHEN FLA looses this weekend we’d better be ahead of them….There was no justice in this thing. None in the LSU FLA game, and none in the FLA arkensas game (although the pigs did it to them selfs more than the reffs)…there is no Justice if we get screwed again this week..

If Cwm would start putting the secondary in position, i/e man to man ,to make plays , hey maybe they can make one or two on tebows bobble- headed passes of late. The SEC is never going to allow UF or UA to lose this year and spoil their ranked #1 vs #2 championship game. If your team plays them the rest of the year, may as well forget it. They aren’t going to be allowed to lose until they play each other.

The UGA defense needs to get their “blood lust” attitude back! If they can pop a couple of UF players in the mouth, then they might set a tone for the game that COULD parlay this game into a victory! Of course, Bobo is going to have to get a little more creative with his play calling…the tools are there…just have to get the hammer out and use it! Good luck!!!

Tebow and his tight end Gonzalez will hook up time and time gain on Saturday and it will sustain Florida drives or end up as Gator TDs. Tebow will make UGA look like third graders. Evans and Reshad Jones will be discussing coverage breakdowns time and time again in this game. Ugly it will be folks. Just like the other ugly UGA losses this year and last year. The beat goes on.

Until UGA hires a new coach and a NEW STAFF with a NEW ATTITUDE ………….UGA will continue this ugly slide. When my wife says that UGA is “not like they were even 4 years ago”, we know that we are in trouble. She knows nothing about football. She is a UGA grad, too.

Florida defeats UGA and KY will be a toss up and Auburn and then Tech will defeat UGA. By the Tech game, UGA will be so down trodden in their beat down attitude, tech will win by 24. This season is rapidly winding down and hopefully, it will lead to change. This is not rocket science gang.

Richt has shown what he can do over 8 or 9 years and that is to NOT BEAT Florida with any regularity. Now? UT and Auburn and Tech and others have passed him by. Is this what UGA fans want to pay $$ for???

Stats of the past mean absolutely nothing. They are from different teams, players, and coaches. Every game is its own game – period. Throw out all of the previous games even this year. It all comes down to talent, execution, passion, and relentless effort for a full 60-minutes. Don’t believe for one minute that both sides are not going to bring their best game. Don’t worry, more stats will be talked about during the game and more will be made during it. At the end, there will be a score on the board and that is the ONLY thing that matters.

Question 4 Richt Haters

October 27th, 2009
1:05 pm

Who exactly would you suggest we go out and hire if we got rid of Richt?

While we have issues w/the DC and OC, I think Richt has earned ONE bad season, and it’s still in question how this season will end. His first season he won 8 games, he hasn’t had fewer than 9 wins since, had 2 top 5 finishes, 2 SEC titles and a 3rd trip.

You can not measure a coach by National Championships! There is too much LUCK involved in getting there.
In 2006, FL needed 3-4 teams to lose over the last two weeks and a blocked FG from a player that otherwise shouldn’t have even been in the game.

Richt knows there are staff changes that need to made, you don’t do them in the middle of the season though.

Let’s wait and see:
1. How the rest of this season plays out, I think Richt has deserved at least that much.
2. Let’s see what offseason moves are made.

It’s FAR TOO EARLY to call for the man’s head. I think perception vs realilty gets the best of us all sometimes.

This has nothing to do with Willie Martinez, Mike Bobo, or Mark Richt. Georgia has lost 16 out of the last 20 against Florida. Make that 17 out of 21 on Saturday. How do you explain the 15 straight losses before Richt arrived? Reverse the current Georgia and Florida coaches on Saturday and you will have the same result. Florida players are better than Georgia players. You people buy into that “Rival 4 and 5 Star” nonsense every year – and the results don’t change.

Football is the same now as it was 100 years ago, the team that tackles the best wins on defense, the team that blocks the best wins on offense. Until these fundamentals are taught by our coaches and carried out on the field by our players we will continue to struggle.

Good teams overcome. The refs did not block two field goal attempts last weekend in the Bama game. UGA could not stop LSU and Ark had their chances. The refs may miss several calls but good teams overcome. UF should have the respect of everyone. Untill someone knocks them off they are the best, no question about it. UGA has to play lights out from the opening kickoff and it still may not be enough, but they control their own destiny. UF will beat UGA like a drum if they have the chance. It is up to the players to keep that from happening. UF should cover the spread but they haven’t for the last few weeks so anything can happen. UGA is playing for respect as no one gives them a chance to win. I’ll keep supporting the Bulldogs and hope that things improve.

Eureka!! I’ve figured out Joe Cox’s problem.

For the past four years, all he has done is scrimmage against a soft Willie Martinez defense. That’s why he never follows his progressions to the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th receiver – he’s never had to. He’s used to seeing the D-back playing off 10 yards.

Come to think of it, that might explain some of Bobo’s play calling as well…..

Look on the brightside. CWM’s D won’t hurt as much with the soft Cover 2, when you add the fact that UF has no down field passing attack to speak of. On the other hand the TE will probably have 200 yds. recieving.

I see the topic of Fire CMR has returned. When you talk of replacing both the OC and DC, you might as well replace the HC. How do people not get that?

jason

Here’s an idea. Charles and White TE post to the middle of the field. UF plays their Safeties deeper than anyone to keep from giving up the big play. There has to be 10-15 yrd. routes in the middle of the field to the TE. Also take some shots deep with Green and King. Even if the are not successful, it will keep the safeties back and the middle open for the TE.

I wish the Geogia Bulldogs much luck on Saturday, but the odds are created by looking at Florida’s Defense. They are number one in the country on Defense and that is remarkable, given the level of talent in the SEC. Defense wins championships, not offense. Fans love offense, but its ball control that will win it all for any team.

Mark Richt is a good man and a super coach, but then again so is Urban Meyer. Meyer has created a dynasty in Florida that will remain for several years. We are trying to get our dynasty back in Lincoln, but it seems we will have much more work to do.

My advice is to savor the game, win or lose on Saturday. You are watching a lengend in Spikes/Tebow, much like our heydays of the 90’s.

It ain’t about play calling people! Y’all can blame Bobo if you want, but I respectfully submit if any of us were trying to call plays for an offense with absolutely no running game because the o-line can’t block their own grandmas, we would get the same, if not worse, result (last time I checked, Bobo was not the o-ine coach). It’s about blocking and tackling and if we have not learned how to do those two things any better than we were doing them before the off week, this is going to be really, really ugly. In fact, if we continue to not block and tackle any better, this will potentially be the most embarrassing game we’ve had to suffer through in a long, long time. And that’s saying something!

As for play calling – it ain’t rocket science. Watch Florida on offense. Tebow will run the ball over 20 times out of the shotgun. No imagination needed. They will block and we won’t tackle. Result, they gain yardage. Tebow will roll out and throw it 5 yards downfield to a wide open receiver (we don’t believe in actually covering those people). Tebow will hand the ball to the guy standing behind him or beside him. That guy will run several yards before anybody touches him unless he runs into one of his own men. Again, it ain’t about playcalling.

Our only hope lies in the fact that the Gators have not been blocking and tackling very well either, but they do both somewhat better than we do. In addition, their defense seems to have at least been taught to be in the proper positions. For example, they seem to actually have someone trying to cover the other team’s receivers. Not only can our D not tackle very well, they don’t seem to know where they are supposed to be on most plays (they’re either very dumb or have not been coached a lick – I’m going with the latter).

But not to worry folks, we have assured the recruit down in Florida (all 5′ 7″, 165 pounds of him) that Willie is not going away. So get used to no defense. But we will have that 5′7″ 165 pound DB to get after them next year! Oh, by the way, he will be being told what to do by Willie, whom he likes al lot. Apparently it is a permanent thing. Down right depressing.

With our non existent running game, poor blocking, inconsistent QB play, and a defense that hardly every step up, and lets not forget our sketchy kick coverage, and not to mention our overmatched coaching staff, why is it that I should feel good about Saturday?? We might lose the game, but, I can assure you the sun will rise Sunday and the house payment will still be due on the 10th. We have been going to Jacksonville for the last 30 out of 35 years. Right now I am 16 wins and 19 loses. Sunday I may be 17 wins and 19 loses or 16 wins and 20 loses. The Bye/Open week in this series is always (for either team). I believe it will help UGA a tad, but doubt it’ll give them the win. The only way the Dawgs defeat UF is….1) no UGA turnovers, 2) limited missed tackles & blocks, 3) red-zone execution and 4) we force+capitalize on UF turnovers. I think the Dawgs might make it close, but will not be able to step up the inconsistencies on offense & defense. <:-(

Sautee Dawg, you’re right on regarding this recruiting services & their overrating of players. Far too many 4-5 star players are primadonnas with a sense of entitlement. What’s up with all the Florida vs Alabama matchups? Is that really the matchup the SEC wants to see. Didn’t we see that last year? I think we did and it wasn’t all that competitive. If you ask me Alabama doesn’t have the team they had last year and they didn’t play Florida that well.
They did what they wanted against Bama and Saban’s D couldn’t slow them down. Mark my words, the two won’t meet this year in the dome. Whether it’s Florida or Bama someone will be watching the SEC championship from home this year

Vance was arrested for not having a valid drivers license. He was not smoking crack, robbing a liquor store, rape, fighting, or drinking. I’m not sure this warrents being put under the catagorie of discipline, maybe just being stupid and young. Make him run stairs on an off day.

Well, I don’t know how we’re going to do with the game, but at least as a Florida resident I may now be able to have a UGa tag! Check out story on http://www.ijax.com!

To win, GA needs a confluence of several things, none of which we have reason to expect. First, no turnovers. We have more than two, the gig is up. Second, we gotta play shootout football, not a slow, fist fight. Their defense is too good too good and too deep. Score fast and let our defense work. Third, keep it simple and clean. Special teams have been good recently. Fourth, prayers, luck, divine intervention, whatever you petition for the improbable. I’m dog fan, and my bet, albeit a small one, will go with them to win.

Great Comment! I am sure everyone was dying to know what your wife who knows nothing about football has to say about the matter.

Our team is not that bad…Joe Cox is not great, but Richt knew that when he started Stafford over him for three years. Willie Martinez should be on the hot seat, but he may just be a victim of young player’s mistakes, its hard to tell. We still do have AJ Green, who is proof that we can still recruit superstars, all hope is not lost.

No one has stepped up at RB, but the committee may be the way to go until someone does step up and look like a Knowshon Moreno. We lost our playmakers to the NFL and our two studs from last year are already producing with the big boys. Its gonna be hard to replace them, but we have talent…it just needs to all come together.

The best case scenario for Tech is to have UGA win until COFH and then fall. Otherwise there is no bump for Tech running the table.

I’ll bite the bullet and pull for the boys in red to win on Saturday.

So now Vince Vance gets arrested? So is CMR just gonne “love him” too, since he’s not suspending him for the Florida game? These guys are out of control. No discipline on or off the field, and very poor coaching. Cut the dreadlocks, stop dancing to Soulja Boy, and it’s time to clean house from the top on down! Anything less is like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

Some of these Tech fans in here talking about 2 and 3 star players seem to forget that right now Paul Johnson is winning with Chan Gaileys top 10 recruiting class from 2006. What happens when he really does have to play with the 2 and 3 star players that populate his #49 and #52 recruiting classes?

Did you see Tebow just give up on trying to tackle the Miss. State back that picked off his pass and returned it for a TD. He didn’t even try to tackle him and quit running after him at about the 28. My respect for him took a huge tumble on one play. He wussed out!!!!

I want too know if their was an investigation into why Gators had all those Bye weeks. Who made out the schedules. I can’t believe someone with Fla connections wasn’t behind it. Where was UGA officials at during this time. Why weren’t they complaining about it! Now it’s time Ga gets all those Bye weeks back. Has Damon Evans insisted on that? If not, what does he get paid for? What has Adams done about it. Thats why this program is in the shambles it’s in. Wake up, people!

GoGator- In all reality, I think it will UF 38 UGA 10. We get 3 in the first half and the 7 at the end when your 2,3,4 stringers are in. Your DBs are gonna have a field day with Cabbage Patch QBing.

Our D will be worn down because they will be on the field all day due to Bobo’s 3 and out play calling.

Could get uglier but I really don’t want to contemplate it on a Wednesday night. Oy!

I’ll be pulling for you guys to defend the honor of the grand old state of Georgia for three reasons: [1] it will enhance our strength of schedule, [2] any defeat of teams ranked above us is helpful, amd [3] I tend to root for the Dawgs to win all their games except except against Tech. There are

Ooops. I’m using my daughter’s computer & the above posted too soon. I was saying that few states can boast two football teams with such rich traditions over the past hundred years and records as Georgia. I can think of Alabama, Michigan, Indiana, Texas [a huge state], California [also a huge state], and Florida [only since the 1960's].

Forget calculating the effect of bye weeks. One of UGA’s three measly victories over UF since 1990 was against Ron Zook the week after we had just fired him. Maybe you should hope for that scenario again to help give your program an “edge” in the series. Stop whining about refs and celebration calls and complaining about bye weeks and take a timeout. No, wait. We call the timeouts. Dawgs may not leave the field until they’re told it’s time to get off the grass and go back inside….

G8TR – When you get all the calls, one which actually enables you to beat that power house team from Arkansas, it’s pretty easy to tell others to stop whining about refs. How about stop telling others what to do and stay on your own team’s websites? Oh, you don’t have one. Wonder why?

Florida fans seem to forget that we hold the all time series record 47-38-2. UF may have dominated the series since 1990, but the law of averages say that the series will turn back around. On another note, I like all the confidence the Florida fans have, the past three times we have beaten them was when everyone gave us no chance. Plus in the end, I’d rather lose to UF than wear jeanshorts and wifebeaters and win.
