When Urban Meyer was ‘a huge Georgia Bulldog fan’

Athens — Florida coach Urban Meyer made a confession on the SEC coaches’ teleconference this week:  He once was an avid Georgia football fan.

“I was a Herschel Walker fan, like nuts about him, when I grew up,” Meyer said. “He was [at Georgia] right at the point I was in high school [in Ohio], and I was actually a huge Georgia Bulldog fan because of Herschel Walker.”

As you’ve probably heard, Meyer’s quarterback, Tim Tebow, is one rushing touchdown shy of matching Walker’s SEC career record of 49, achieved in 1980-82.   Tebow could be in position to tie or break the record against Walker’s old team next week — unless he does both against Mississippi State on Saturday night.

Said Meyer: “Since my era was Herschel Walker, [I'm] a little bit –- and I don’t want to say it too publicly –- in awe of here’s Tim Tebow, a guy I get to see every day, and you mention him in a rushing record [with] Herschel Walker. That’s pretty powerful.”

Couple of other notes:

– A.J. Green said he was “surprised” that the SEC this week suspended the officiating crew that incorrectly called an excessive-celebration penalty against him late in the Georgia-LSU game.   The suspension came after the SEC found that the same crew  incorrectly called a personal-foul penalty against Arkansas late in last week’s loss to Florida.  Asked after practice Thursday if he finds any vindication in the league action, Green said: “No, not really. Just take it as it comes. . . .  It didn’t give us the win.”

– After a 6 a.m. weight-lifting session and classes Friday, Georgia’s players will be off until reconvening at 6 p.m. Sunday. They’ll practice in full pads Sunday night to finish installing the Florida game plan.

CMR should have started installing the game-plan last Sunday instead of this Sunday. What a waste of a week! Also it may be helpful for the players to watch the UF game Saturday instead of hanging out with friends or going to the Texas game. That includes you CMR, lead by example. Make an effort to scout the UF/MSU game. I hate to tell you this but next Saturday is a damn big game for you.

This nonchalant attitude out of Athens is discouraging….We are going to come out flat and get blown out again I’m afraid. Oh and let me add this if Sweet Willie is reading, There is nothing more important to Urban Meyer than breaking Herschel’s record in front of 50,000 Dawg fans next Saturday. So get it together, I don’t want to drive down there and spend all that money to see that crap.

Herschel could not have had as many carries as Tebow has. What is their average yard per carry comparison?

The excuses you Dawg fans continually make for your team’s lousy play never ends. Everyone agrees the celebration call against Georgia near the end of the LSU game was a bogus joke but many fail to point out that the LSU running back ran 32 yards for the last score and therefore the Georgia penalty is irrelevant because the LSU player could have easily run another 50 yards for the score because there wasn’t a Bulldogs anywhere to be seen as he ran in untouched for the score. I would blame your boy Willie for that inept Dawg defense and not that sorry Tech Grad financial planner / part time SEC official for your LSU loss.

After making myself a double Koolaid and water and then rolling and smoking some Koolaid crystals and then watching some highlights of Georgia games from the 80’s (before I was born), I now agree with Gomdawg and German Shepherd Dawg. I too think Georgia’s “pro style” offense will rush for 225 yards against Florida and even again against Georgia Tech. Even though Georgia currently ranks 104th (out of 120 major-College teams) in rushing and is only averaging 98 yards per game, 82 if you subtract out draw plays and sweeps designed to run out the clock before the half and end of game (when the other team is dropping nine people into pass coverage) and 69 if you take away # 22’s long TD run earlier this year.

Hell, I believe Georgia will actually out rush Florida who averages 285 yards a game and Tech who averages 310 and it’s quite possible Georgia will go on this year to become the only 3 loss team to ever win a national championship.

One could go all day making comparisons between The great Hershel and Tebow but bottom line here is, there aren’t any. Except they will likely both go down as two of the best all time players.

I am a Dawg fan to the bone and played against Hershel in high school yet I wish Tebow all the best is breaking another record despite the fact I am a Gator Hater. Hey, it doesn’t matter how many games, how many years yadda, yadda, yadda. If Tebow crosses the goal line more times in his college career, POWER to him and congratulations.

Two different positions, two different eras and two completely different circumstances. The record is RUSHING TDs and if it is Tebow then he demm well deserves it and hats off to him. It’s quite an accomplishment in any realm.

Hey dog nation,

We heard our game against # 4 Virginia Tech drew a 3.17 rating and was shown on over 3,000,000 television sets worldwide. Not sure how many people got to see georgia play on Vandy’s homecoming in a stadium smaller than ours on a regional network called Peachtree TV?

LOL

Not sure if you can spot the 10 fans OMG mentioned in this picture

Hey dog nation,

At least our running backs know how to carry the ball in both hands so they can always stiff arm defenders and break tackles. When’s the last time you saw a Georgia back break a tackle? Other than Hershal and Lindale Scott? LOL. Don’t think opposing defensive coordinators don’t pick up on these and your other pop warner fundamentals when they study your film. LOL.

At least our 50,000 local fans get their money’s worth in our stadium!

Do you people actually think the UGA coaches took the entire week off? You don’t know how much time they’ve put into preparing the game plan. Why would they tell you anyway? Who cares if CMR takes some time off to see his son play? I bet he’s right back to work after the game. You think CUM didn’t go watch his daughter play volleyball? I saw him in Lakeland during football season two years ago. Believe me, the UGA coaches are preparing for UF. So, if you’re a true fan; you’ll shut up and get behind the Dawgs. You’re not a true fan if you don’t think the coaches are preparing for UF!!! Go pull for someone else.

Herschel scored 49 tds in an era when there wasn’t a spread offense. He was essentially the only play-maker on the Georgia offense. Defenses knew that 80-90% of all plays, the ball would be in his hands. Defenses keyed on him. YET, he still scored 49 tds in 3 years and rushed for a billion yards.

Tebow is a great college player. He’s an even better human being and you have to give props to a guy like that even if you ARE a gator-hater like myself. But he isn’t Herschel and he hasn’t carried UF on his shoulders for 3 solid years as Herschel did.

Even at his age, I’d line Herschel up nose-to-nose with Tebow and be willing to bet that Herschel would lay him on his back.

So Tebow – go break that record brother and do it against UGA next weekend in Jax IN HONOR of the greatest college football palyer of all time………Herschel Walker.

Herschel NEVER lost a conference game. Herschel won the SEC all three years of his career. Herschel only lost 1 regular season game (to the national champion Clemson Tigers in 1981), and 2 bowl games (to the national champion Penn State Nittany Lions at the end of the 1982 season, and to top ten Pittsburgh with Dan Marino at the end of the 81 season)…3 losses in 3 years…none of them in the SEC..2 of them to National Champions. Herschel has a Heisman (and he should have won it once more as a freshman)…but that was too shocking to the voters at the time. Herschel has one national title and played for another. 27 years after his college career ended, Herschel still holds NCAA records. Heck, he still holds the SEC’s all time rushing record. He rushed for 5259 yards in 3 years…a number players like Emmitt Smith and Darren McFadden couldnt match in 4 years. Tebow is ONE of the greatest players in college football history. He is in the conversation based on his stats, his Heisman, his championships, his leadership, etc. He is in the conversation with a handful of others..but the conversation about the greatest college football player of all time begins and ends with Herschel Walker.

Give um Hell Yellow Fuzz. I would like to point out something. To compare Hershel Walker to Tim Tebow as some have done on this blog,is ludicrous. Walker was a flop in the USFL and even worse in the NFL. He always tip toed to the line of scrimmage. Tiny Tim would have broken more tackles. He was afraid to get hit. He couldn’t even wear Tebow’s jock strap much less Jon Dwyer or Josh Nesbitt.

Denver Dog

Herschel Walker ran all over Tech, Florida, and everyone else. Nesbitt and Dwyer are good, but not in that league yet. Tebow, 4 years to catch a 3 year man. Hershel needs to bow to none of you, his record speaks for itself. If you think he was afraid to get hit, you need to go back and look at him hitting folks, he played a year with a torn rotator cuff, ran all over Tech, UT, Fl, Nortre Dame, Miss, and anyone else that came around. Trying to argue with a curdawg presenting real data and comparing peaches to peaches or peaches to oranges is like arguing with a liberal!
The truth is you can’t compare Herschel’s and Tim’s careers other than to say they are 2 of the all time top college players and each broke numerous records during each of their respective careers.
Herschel Walker is one of the greatest college running backs of all time if not the greatest and Tim Tebow is one of the greatest college quarterbacks if not the greatest, but you can’t really compare them:

Years played (starting): HW started for 3 years (left for the big bucks and had a productive but not great pro-career, with out graduating from college till recently); his college rushing record would not be being broken by Tim if he’d stayed his senior year and graduated)and TT has started for 3 years and went in a few times a game his freshman year (he will graduate in December and probably go on for a productive but not great pro-career).

Rushing: HW – 49 TD’s 994 carries TT – 48 TD’s 574 carries with >6 games to play.

Passing: Do we really need to compare HW against TTs career?

Bottom line: Herschel and Tim are two of the sweetest peaches and oranges to ever play college football!

This Walker vs Tebow argument is quite pointless. Anyone who is of age to actually remember Walker regardless if you’re a DAWG or not, CANNOT dispute that he is perhaps the greatest college football player ever. Past polls have been done and many others believe this is true. Herschel was the DAWG offense yet his stats speak for themselves. Tebow is really good. I would have liked to have seen him without Harvin and now Demps/Rainey. Tebow has lots of goal line TDs because UF hasn’t had a decent RB maybe since Fred Taylor. UF fans feel free to correct me on that one. I believe in giving credit where it’s due but Herschel is numero uno, PERIOD!
