Mark Richt’s weekly radio call-in show was much tamer last night. Whereas a week before most callers vented about Georgia’s performance at Tennessee, last night’s callers mostly commended the win at Vanderbilt.
A couple of interesting items from Richt’s comments, which came by phone from his pickup truck in a Columbus parking lot after a speaking engagement:
On last week’s practice-field move of backup linebacker Charles White to fullback: “[He] hasn’t been getting a lot of reps at the linebacker position, and we feel the best chance he can help this football team in the future is at fullback,” Richt said. “So we have made a change for him to play fullback in mid-season because we don’t believe we are pulling away from the defense and he can still play special teams. We will have two senior fullbacks next year [Shaun Chapas and Fred Munzenmaier], so we need to cultivate another fullback.”
White, a redshirt sophomore, has two years of eligibility remaining after this one.
– Richt was asked about the possibility of moving Richard Samuel from tailback to defense. (The most frequently mentioned position is linebacker, at which Samuel made the AJC’s All-State team in high school.) Richt said such a move would be premature — but did not rule it out eventually. If Samuel ever were to switch positions, it would be between seasons, Richt said.
“The thing about Richard, first of all, is that he’s got a lot of reps at running back,” Richt said. “He’s still in the race to be our No. 1 running back, and at this point I think his best chance to help Georgia win is to stay at running back. If there was ever going to be change, it would be an off-season change for him.”
Samuel started the first six games of this season at tailback for Georgia but did not play until the third quarter last week, getting six carries for 18 yards.
By the way, the Dogs are back on the practice field today, one of two practices this week. The other is Thursday. They’ll lift weights Wednesday and Friday.

Has the brain trust in Athens ever thought about moving Samuel to Fullback ?? I think he would ne an awesome threat at that position. It sure would give the opposing defense something to think about.

They really need to move the kid. He is not a running back. Just doesn’t have the instinct. He seems better suited to being a linebacker. Maybe he can redshirt and learn the position so he can get on the field on defense.

Okay, so let me get this right, Mark Richt has no problem changing kids positions, but he will risk his own job before he changes the position of a subpar coordinator (offense and defense). Recruits I hope you’re paying attention. It won’t be long before every problem will be because of “lack of talent”, despite the fact that Samuels, King, and Ealy were all 4 and 5 star prospects. Mark Ingram, by the way was a 3 star prospect and look at what the great coaching he gets has turned him into.
By the way, I’m a Georgia fan, but it’s disgusting to me what this media in the good old south does, by scapegoating the kids and letting the coach off the hook. If you are a big time recruit don’t go to Georgia until a significant change is made on the staff up to and including the Head Coach.

Sort of makes me sick to see how fans talk about our head coach. Then have the nerve to say they are dawg fans. What I really find to be funny. They all know how to fix the team then go off to a job that is not coaching football. There is a reason CMR is the head football coach at UGA and a reason why they go to their jobs not coaching football. Two years ago when UGA was the best team in the country at the end of the season. Where was all these fans that now think the only way Georgia can challenge again is to fire its coaching staff. Either be a real dog fan or shut the hell up. Bernie Matt go root for another team. Really!? Oh thank god. I love Samuel the athelete. I love Samuel the student. I love Samuel’s attitude. I loathe Samuel the running back. If he hasn’t picked up how to play the running back position by now, it’s just not going to happen. Knowshon wan’t half as fast as Samuel, but he was much better at avoidance, at the vision it takes, at just flat out knowing how to get away from defenders.
Put Samuel at LB and everyone should win.

Bernie Matt… position changes happen all the time. Most of these kids play multiple positions in high school. Sometimes we have them in the wrong spot. Robert Edwards 1st two seasons at UGA were at CB, the position he was recruited to play, but they saw something in him, moved him to RB – worked out better for both parties. Sean Jones was a H.S. QB and recruited at that position, but was moved to Safety – he was drafted 2nd round of 2004 NFL Draft and is still in the league. You are a moron if you really think what you wrote.

Robert Edwards played CB under Ray Goff before the staff tried him at RB. Best move GA has ever made at switching a player position. Samuals is struggling at the RB position and has problems w/fumbling and hitting the holes consistently. He’s fast, good size kid and strong. He’s played D in HS and you want the best players on the field in the right position. RB is not his best position so try him on D. He’s not getting many reps at RB anymore and its a shame to leave him on the sidelines. Agree w/CMR that if a change is in store for either of these kids do it between seasons. Same for White.

Samuels is only 210 – 215 lbs…………way to small for a FB or DE fellas.
He seems to be muscular track / sprinter to me. He has no elusiveness or “wiggle”. When he gets touched he just falls down. One of those great atheletes that just does not have “it” when it comes to being a SEC RB.
A move to LB may be good for him next year. I do like seeing him getting in the game in the 2nd half once the oppositions defene is wore down. He spped will alyayse make him a home run threat vs. a busted or tired defense. He is just not starter material at RB in the SEC.
I want to see more of Carlton Thomas on passing downs……….I wish we sould split him out wide, after lining up at the line of scrimmage in the backfield as a RB……….then split him out wide to get one on coverage vs. a LB which will also lessen the pass rush.
I also want to see more 2 TE sets with O. Charles and A. White in the game together. Both of those guys can burn any LB in pass coverage.

It’s about getting the best athletes on the field and making sure they know what they are doing when they get there.
Jackson and Ealey are the future at RB. They should be getting all the reps witht he 1st team. King and Thomas are next in line and King is very good at pass protection.
Samuel’s best bet is to start working with the linebackers now and when we get a new DC next year, he can play DE or outside LB. Recruits reading this should be pleased that we have a head coach intelligent enough to put people in places where they can succeed.

Where I am confused about the running backs situation is why recruit one of the top backs, (Ealey) and not put the ball in his hands more. He has had better success rurrning the ball than King, Samuels, and all others combined? Remember Hershal,,& how many times he touched the ball in a game. Ealey is accustomed to carrying many times. He scored seven toutchdowns in one game at E,C.I……and that was in the first half ’cause the coach didn’t play him in the second!!!!

Samuels is 6′ 2″ and 222lbs according to the dawgs roster. Marcus Howard according to the colts roster is 6′ 0″ and 237. Now move him back to his soph season what do you think his weight was? Marcus Howard was a corner back that moved to D End. With Samuels quicks he would be a monster around the end. Look at NFL rosters and you see ends at 6 foot to 6′ 2″ in the 230 to 250 one every team. To think Samuels does not have the size is just not true.

If we are referencing Robert Edwards – then why don’t we look at moving Boykin to RB. Boykin, unlike any RB I have seen this year, can see the entire field and wait for a hole to open up. Richard Samuels is an SEC athlete – but not an SEC running back. Maybe he can cut it as a LB or FB – but without vision and patience, we can’t depend on him at the RB position.

Just a thought, based on CMR’s comments about TB, it seems like they are auditioning for the #1 TB spot for 2010. Kind of makes sense considering they will all be back. I would like to also see some snaps for Gray to start the auditioning for the #1 QB spot next year. IMO, Samuel should never have been moved from LB. He could have been solid at the OLB opposite Curran by now.

Chill out people. everything will be alright! Too many bashing CMR. I still would not trade him in for any other coach. Now a couple of the other coaches it would be a different story. All top programs go through a bad year. I remember a UF team that lost 4 games and the next year they won a NC. I’m not saying we will do that, but we will be in the top tier in the SEC next year.
I did not know that Samuel was recruited as a LB. I also like the idea of him at fullback. It will be interesteing to see what adjustments CMR makes for the second half of the season.

We have seen both TE’s split out wide a few times this year but it limits the audibles Cox can call at the line scrimmage.
I personally like seeing White and Charles in the traditional “ACE” formation where they are both at the line up of scrimmage. This allows Cox the freedom to keep one (or both) as pass blockers, if he reads the pre-snap blitz, and it also allows for them to be the “hot routes” if Cox would rather use that audible to beat the blitz. It would allow UGA to keep 7 blockers at the line of scrimmage for a run audible to the left or right based on what the defense gives you.
As 5th year senior I trust Cox to make the right pre-snap read out of that ACE formation where I think we can have mis-matches on passing plays and the freedom to change the protection scheme or to change to a run play with 7 blockers at the line of scrimmage.
Of course one of the TEs could alwayse split out wide at the line up of scrimmage to make the defense think even more.
Remember that one of the safeties are shading AJ Green and not thinking about the TE’s most of the time.

“They all know how to fix the team then go off to a job that is not coaching football. There is a reason CMR is the head football coach at UGA and a reason why they go to their jobs not coaching football.”
Well duh! Captain Obvious I hope you’re not a Georgia grad! Your kind of logic is foolish! Richt got into coachin because he’s a former athlete and football was his primary interest. Those of us who didn’t get into coaching had other interests. But no matter what profession a person picks, it doesn’t mean that he couldn’t do something else or do it better. Someone not in coaching might make an excellent coach. After all it only requires (and I realize I’m oversimplifying) good management and leadership skills combined with a thorough understanding of the game. Although experience makes a better coach, t’s not like a person is required to spend several years of academic study in graduate school or in one of the professions like business, law, medicine, or engineering to become a coach. Who’s to say that someone in one of these other professions doesn’t know enough about football to do a better job just like Richt might make a better Minister of the Gospel than a head football coach. Thus it’s foolish to suggest that someone not in coaching can never make a critical observation about the Georgia football team.
I like Richt and want him to stay . . . as long as he’s getting the job done! And FYI I have been critical of Richt’s offense all along . . . and yes even two years ago when things were better. For instance I despise that little delay misdirection draw play that we run and because of it often lose yards. But what I despise more are mindless defenders of anything that don’t debate the facts but instead take issue with someone’s right to criticise. Using the logic that some folks on this blog use, it’d be interesting to see how they vote. Probably always for the incumbent!
Like a lot of alumni and fans I think Richt is a decent coach where the Xs and Os are concerned. He’s not Saban or Meyer or probably even Miles. But he’s better than many. Two weeks ago though he wasn’t even the equal of Kiffin and was embarrassingly outcoached and outplayed. My problem with Richt is that for over a year now and on several occasions before that we’ve had inconsistent performance from all areas of our team and Richt has yet to figure it out. Despite glaring evidence to the contrary that all’s well he’s not made changes to his coaching staff to get better. He’s allowed the problem with our defense and possibly our offense too to reach such critical mass that unless changes are made to his staff after this season, Richt has damaged his own position as head coach. And that’s a real shame because the well-being of the team should be more important than coaching loyalties on the staff.
My point is simply this. Richt has brought this criticism on himself. Some fans like Bernie go a little overboard and I don’t agree with it. But’s it’s illustrative of the amount of good will Richt has forfeited because of his stubborness. Others like jbts think you have to be a coach to say anything negative. I disagree with this approach even more because such folks seem to want to give our staff a pass simply because they’re our staff. Most people I know are out of their mind angry and pissed off about what’s going on in Athens! There’s a large part of the bulldawg nation who’s had enough of this crap. Strong defense is a big part of Georgia’s football heritage. So is fundamentally sound football . . . where penalties and turnovers are not the most consistent part of the Georgia offense. All of these things including tackling, blocking, etc. are skills taught and refined by the coaching staff. If the current staff can’t get these concepts across to the athletes they coach . . . then it’s time to find coaches who can.
My ultimate loyalty is to the University of Georgia and it’s best interest . . . and not to any set of coaches. My support for the staff is dependent upon the quality and consistency of their coaching. I’m sorry but it’s a results oriented business. I can’t help but think that if the coaching had been the equal of our talent this season, our record would be better.

Could they bring Boykin over to the offensive side and use him like Florida used Harvin last year. Wildcat formation, quick sweeps, even throw to him.
Bottom line is he is a play maker, and you want to get the ball into the hands of your play makers, right?
Dan Mullins was crative in getting the ball into the hands of his play makers last year, can CMR and Bobo do the same? Or do they stick to the line up and go style?

Is Logan Gray the future? is Aaron Murray? is Zach Mettenberger?
bottom line is this…Joe Cox likes to stare at his receiver, doesn’t check down through his progression, SEC safetys see this, and Joe Cox is gone after this year. Is it time to at least get Logan Gray some game time, calling the offense, reading a defense, making game decisions, seeing if you can open up the offense with him at the helm?
When does that process start?

Billy Ray Valentine,
The Gators do not have a consistent deep threat this year. Their offense was scarier last year. As much the Dawgs defense has been disappointing the last few years, they have actually played some of their better games against the spread offense (the exception being last year’s Florida game, which was more of a total meltdown than real flaws in our defense).
On a good day, the Dawgs D can play a lot better against Florida than against a team with a more traditional offense (like Alabama or Arkansas). The key to beating the Dawgs D is lots of play action passes.
There have been a few games this year when teams (like LSU) used the option, and the Dawgs D played it pretty well. I think we are better at defensive end than we were a year ago, so I think we will play better defensively against GT than we did last year.
Now before you call me a silly optimist, I would like to add that I’m still very worried about the Dawgs running game, and *that* is the reason why I won’t be putting any money of the Dawgs.

Billy Ray Valentin, I think Joe cox gives us the best chance to win heading into the Florida game by a long shot.
I do not think it is worth pulling the red shirt off Murray or Mettenberge to play a snap here or a snap there. I would rather keep them for a full 4 years then 3 years and a handful of plays.
Now if we are down 28-0 nothing to the Gators I may change my tune but I do not see that happening with an off weak to prepare. These Dawgs still have some fight in them and I expect them to play their best game of the year in Jacksonville when it matters the most. Cox has that fire about him…….a win in Jacksonville would turn his 1 year tenure at QB into a success with a BIG TIME win to hang his hat on that Dawg fans will never forget……….by beating Tebow in his senior season, vs. the #1 team in the nation, who also happens to be our biggest rival. It just doesn’t get any bigger then that and UGA will circle the wagons and be ready to give their maxium effort.
Cox does not look off the safeties very often, that is true………..but I trust him the most right now at QB and truely believe we have a legitimate shot vs. Florida. That game vs. Arkansas showed us how beatable Florida is. We need to scrap the “cover 2″ and keep a safety in the box vs. Tebow. Hit him hard and often and force him to pass the ball vs. 8 man fronts.
We have some beefy DTs that will make it more difficult for Tebow to simply plow it up the middle like he prefers to do. We may actually make Tebow have a 2nd thought about that, I hope. I really like how we matchup vs. Florida this year with our DTs……….believe it or not.

Sometimes you lose on the road to an inferior opponent with a first year starter. Richt is a good coach in my opinion that is competing in a league that is the toughest to win. Saban hasn’t won anything at Alabama yet.(not even a bowl game) Meyer is lucky to have one of the best players to play college football ever. Miles got a championship with 2 losses and the 2nd best team in the league that year(A LOT of luck). The sky is not falling you bunch of chicken littles. The dawgs will be fine. Go Dawgs!

Johnny Danger,
True the deep threat is not in Gainesville this year, they’ve had a hard time stretching the field vertically this year.
You would have a hard time selling that as the reason the dawgs defense stands a chance.
With speedy backs like no other in Demps and Rainey, I don’t think the dawgs can tackle them (provided they can even catch them)
And if Urban Meyer watched any of the UGA/UT game, all he has to do is find a way to slip TE Gonzalez out and sit down in the middle of the soft shell zone, and hit him for 8-12 yard every time (just like crompton did)
The gators seem to spread the ball around. Can’t key on one guy. they have different weapons all over the place, and they find a way to get the ball to the play makers.
Stopping the Tech offense is tricky in itself. First to play the option you have to remain disciplined for 4 quarters, because one missed assignement and Dwyer takes it to the house. And based on what I’ve seen, the dawgs defense hasn’t been much for keeping up with assignments, much less the number of missed tackles. When the dawgs do get a hand on a running back, they have to make the tackle. They cannot afford to let Nesbitt and Dwyer break tackles.

Georgia coaches have got to be the dumbest most out of touch bunch of deadbeats in the SEC. If you look at the tapes of the games this year, Richard Samuel is the hardest running tailback they have. He always moves the pile and is always going forward. He is the most physical back they have. When they feature him on drives, the chains always move. If they cant see that them I see why Georgia is out coached each and every game.

I agree that UGA’s defense matches up well in certain areas with Florida’s offense. The two glaring exceptions are inability to cover the outside on both either runs or passes. The soft zone will be stretched as Florida uses its speed to go wide and throw wide. When our defense is forced to adjust to that, then Florida will hit our soft zone in the middle with the TE. Its actualy our offense against their defense that will cause us the biggest problems. Running against Florida is not really viable which hurts our play action pass based offense. Their team speed will cause us a lot of problems and most importantly going deep will be very hard to do. Florida plays its safeties very deep and they charge the pass and receiver once the ball is in the air. They have done this ever since Nelson was at Florida. Stafford made them pay two years ago because of his strong arm, the ball got to the receiver too quickly for the then young Florida safeties to make a play. Mallett has the same sort of arm strength and took advantage of their safeties last week. Joe Cox simply does not have that kind of arm strength and if the ball hangs even a little bit, Florida’s safeties will be all over it and there will be some interceptions. As the defense ends up on the field because our offense cannot sustain drives, they will wear down. When coupled with the glarngly obvious defensive problems we have, not the least of which is a lack of three and outs, poor tackling, weak pass rush, and a failure to generate turnovers, Tebow will return to his fullback mode of play and batter us even more as the game goes on.

Richard is their best option at Tailback. Run to his strength. Use the O-line to blow people off the ball. It is very hard to run the ball when you are getting hit 2 yards behind the line. Knowshon didn’t have that problem near as much as we are this year. Give Richard the ball 20-25 times a game and you will have your 100 yard plus rusher a game.

You so-called adults are bigger whiners that my son was at 2 years of age.You may look back on this day and think Samuels turned out as one of the best linebackers we’ve had. By the way he is playing with men who are more physically mature than he is.History lesson, Samuels moved here from the Virgin Islands and was adacemically advanced for his age, so he was placed in a higher grade, he should be playing his senior year in High School. The young man is already carring a pretty heavy load being a good student and all, so get off his dag-um back. sINCE ALL OF YOU PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ON THE PRACTICE FIELD AND HAVE SEEN AND EVALUATED EVERYONE, WELL MAYBE YOU SHOULD THROW YOUR HAT IN THE RING FOR A MAJOR COLLEGE HEAD COACHING POSITION. While I’m pissed leave Mike Bobo alone he is developing his skills on the fly, you’ll be glad in the next few years they stayed the course on him.Do you really think Mark Richt became a great offensive coordinator out of the blue, being an ex-quarterback gives an advantage but it’s developed after years of grooming. Bobo is the reason Uga has gotten all of these great QBs in the last several years.

Saw a quote from Richard’s High School Coach and he says he is an excellent Linebacker, but that his best asset is as a running back, keep in mind this kid is young in age, just barely 18years, i think with a stronger offensive line and another year of getting stronger and maturity he can and will be a very good running back…If you change his position in the offseason, you are taking a chance that this will have a negative impact the kid’s confidence, however, if he really wants the move, then it could work out, but don’t want to give up on him just yet…

This UGA season is in the tank. Forget any stuff for this year, beyond simply finishing out this dreadful year. It is over and UGA is looking at an easy 6-6 or maybe 7-5 with a win over Auburn. Shreveport is not that bad in December. We will play a fourth or fifth or sixth rated ACC team in front of 12,400 rain soaked fans. Clemson or Wak eForest vs UGA…………how does that grab y’all???
UGA is in full transition …………. I have seen this before with Goff and with Jm Donnan. First, there is the “stick to what brought us here” and install nothing new mode”, which we are seeing right now with Richt. What else can he do?
He knows for sure that changes either will be mandated by the UGA hierarchy, or that he will see mass resignations from most of his staff in order for them to save face. After the Tech game, he will see this latter scenario, with his boys ( Mike Bobo and CWM and Fabris ) not wanting to force their buddy into their firings. It wil happen.
So, we rock along and watch this ugly, ugly season wrap up. In 5 years, no one will remember any current UGA player beyond AJ Green, sort of like with me and the 1969 UGA team. I do recall that Nebraska BLEW UGA OUT in the old Sun Bowl to cap off that ugly 5-5-1 year BUT I do not recall one player on that particular UGA team. THAT is whay happens to players on lousy UGA teams ………..obscurity and no fame.
Maybe in 2010 with new kick ass coaches with fire and brim stone in their bellies, UGA can rise from the current ashes. If not? Then in 2010 December, Richt will be blown out.

With all the books they have to read at Bama, maybe they should learn something. Saban is good coach but there are some things outside of his control. With your alums monkeying around the program, it will be a wonder if they don’t have a major infraction while on their three year probation.
Richt runs a clean program, and he wins. UGA fans attacking Richt need to remember the period between Dooley and Richt. Get real. Richt sees everything we see and more. You can bet he is trying to turn things, and if you look at his history, his teams do better as the season progresses.
I believe Samuel has an upside as a running back. He is fast and smart. King fights injuries but he is elusive. What needs to happen is the line needs to pick it up. If the first contact is in UGA’s backfield, few backs are able to gain yardage. If the first contact is after positive yardage, the back’s momentum helps them gain additional yardage.
And if the line gets the running game going, the passing game becomes much easier. The offense avoids the three and outs, and the defense is in the best position, on the bench resting and cheering.
Moving Samuel, Boykin, etc., when they are already getting significant playing time is a mistake. If they want to move in the off season, and the coaches agree, go for it. However, if they move now they won’t be ready to play significant snaps until Spring practice anyway. In the mean time, White’s move is for the future. It sounds like he doesn’t project as a linebacker for the future, and he might be a solid fullback. Give it a try in practice and see if the projection holds up.
Isn’t it fun to tell people how to live their lives and do their jobs? Don’t you wish someone would give you advice like this on your job?

Richard Samuel as a recruit: Rivals.com….#24 RB in the nation, #5 inside runner; Scout.com…#4 RB in the nation, #1 in GA; ESPN….#5 RB in the nation; Parade All American-as a RB. As a senior rushed for 1429 yds and 24 touchdowns, 114 yds receiving. So, all you brilliant coaches know more about it than coach Richt, and want to move him to LB. Guess what? NONE of our RBs has set the world on fire. And we already have some pretty good FBs. That we don’t have a ‘great’ running game has much more to do with OL play. OL play might have a good deal to do with how Joe C has played inconsistently also (no telling how we’d have done so far with AJ).
“CMR is stubborn…CMR thinks this…CMR won’t do that…CMR has no ‘fire’ ” All just a crappy bunch of speculation. You have no idea what goes at practices. Apparently Mr Samuel and Joe C look better than the others during the week. That’s why they start. The game’s intricacies are too subtle for some of you; CMR HAS made changes. CWM has made changes also. To even hint that the coaches don’t know what they’re doing is ignorant and absurd. All the coaches are competitive and want to win. The wins will come; CMR’s record over the past 8 years proves it.
Yes, the whole team needs to improve in just about all facets (kicking and punting the exceptions). And coaching needs to improve. Being a Bulldog fan for 5, 20, 30 years does not an expert make.

I’ve been off line a while, but I see i have a few fans on this blog. “who ya wit”, “i aint scared of you muthas”. Yea, I go to a regular job these days, but unlike you suckas I did play ball at one time and I was not a kicker. LOL And yea I told the kids not to come to UGA until the get their s_it together and I’m going to be on the streets of Atlanta tellin um that, sham you don’t have the connections I do. Most of you probably don’t even know how to get to Washington High School, but you love getting those inner city athletes, don’t you. Then soon as things go wrong, “OH THAT KID MUST HAVE BEEN OVERRATED”, you guys are a joke. Finally, the point I was making initially was that the movement of Charles White should not have even made news, but once again, it’s a smoke screen to cover this failure of a coaching staff. “Who ya wit”

I love the fact that Richt would consider switching players to positions that will help the team and the player. Richard, as physically talented as he is, doesn’t have the “it” factor. He fumbles and he gets tackled easily sometimes. I do think he could be a good linebacker, so if they decide to give it a try to make it a win/win, then I am all for it.

I knew some idiot would bring up Bierria. As if him being accused of murder has anything to do with him playing for us EIGHT years ago. That’s really pathetic.
As for all the comments about not being able to criticize Richt and Martinez while being a UGA fan – that’s almost as pathetic. You stick your head in the sand, the rest of us will see the problems that encompass this program, and the person who’s ultimately responsible for them. Sometimes, you have to tell the people you love the most that they are doing wrong. That’s not being a bad person, that’s being a good person. Same with fans.
As for Bama fans criticizing UGA fans…hey, it’s only Wednesday. Plenty of time left in the week to get caught cheating.

DawginLex, it’s all about what have you done for me lately. The answer for you is NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When did you win a National Championship? I believe the one and only time you did was 1980. We won our 4th one in 1990. We will win our 5th one in the next 2 years. Let’s hope that you are about 15yrs. old; otherwise you will probably never live long enough to see the dawgs win another National Championship. The final question for you is when did you last beat Tech? It won’t happen in your lifetime either as long as Paul Johnson is our coach.

T’ville- i agree, Bobo is still learning on the fly, just wish he was learning on the fly at Troy or Jack St. He’s overmatched every week. Do you think Monte Kiffin, Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban, Les Miles, Urban Meyer are afraid of Mike Bobo?!?!?!?!?! They had to respect the talent that we had with Stafford and Moreno but that’s it.
When people like me say things like “my wife is calling the plays before they snap so you know the opposing D coordinator knows what’s coming” you and others respond with “then tell your wife to become a college coach but until then stop your whining” My response: you’re right. Maybe my wife should. If my wife can do Bobo’s job from the stands what does that tell you?? NO, not that my wife is qualified to be a college playcaller but that Bobo is NOT qualified to be an SEC playcaller.
Some of you people in here think that if we aren’t blind loyalists then we aren’t fans. That if we critcize the coaching staff and expect them to do their jobs at a high level then we aren’t fans. I’m sorry but i’ve been a fan since I was in the womb and my mother was jumping up and down watching Herschel and what i’ve seen in Athens as of late is an underperfoming and inconsistent program. It’s been that way since Shockley left.
They look lost and inept and lose to teams they shouldn’t, get blown out, or look pitiful and pull out a win. They hardly ever look good while winning and they NEVER look good but just fall short and lose.

Aimee, WHAT I’M TELLING YOU AND EVERYBODY ON THIS BLOGS IS, … THE DAYS OF THROWING OUR KIDS UNDER THE BUS ARE OVER. UGA gets to the same allotment of scholarships (85) as all the other D-1 schools. Therefore if a kid is not performing, and it happens from time to time, turn around and look on the sideline and put someone else in the game. But don’t keep dragging these kids names through the mud, and announcing position switches for 3rd team LB’s. Only at Georgia do they look around and find which kid to blame rather than fire the coach. I bet the great Don Shula’s kid could probably point the finger at a lot of kids who underperformed, but in the end the folks at Alabama, pointed to his ass. And low and behold they come to town and embarrass us with pretty much the same kids. Nah, the truth is going to be told, by me and others just like me, you won’t keep trashing our kids, we’ll send them somewhere else. “I aint scared of you mothas”.

THis GA team doesn’t have the ablity to line up on offense and play rock’em sock’em football with the big boys of the SEC for whatever reason. I guess Sturdivant getting hurt changed all that. So, I believe that Bobo really has to open the offense up to the short passing game mixed with occassional long and intermediate throws down the field. This offense seems better suited for the spread than the present system.

Oh by the way, just for the record. I suggested to CMR last year that this same Charles White should be at fullback and he looked at me with a blank expression. I also suggested to him that he play more sets with Samuel and King or Samuel and Ealy, again, blank expression. The same blank expression CBS shows when UGA is done by 3 td’s to a hapless Tenn. team. And did anyone else notice he just said he needs to get the ball to AJ more. Folks, this guy is not in touch with reality. He still thinks he living in the late 90’s before everyone else caught up with what they were doing at FSU. Eventually, people catch up to what you’re doing and you have to make changes, just ask Spurrier. Do you folks on here even realize, he’s still using the same plays from his days at FSU. GIve me a break. And in case most of you don’t know how big-time football works, generally, the head coach tells the coordinators what the philosophy is and the DC or OC work within those guidelines, so all the soft coverages you see on defense and all the wildcat looks with Joe at QB and everyone on defense knowing he’s not going to keep it, while we blame the coordinators, it’s really CMR’s philosophy in the end. If it were not so, I would not have told you it were. “who ya wit”!

By the way, I heard some of Loran on the broadcast as I was driving to the GT-VT game and he sounded incoherent and like he is 100 yrs old. He said something about some country music singer on sidelines which you couldn’t even understand what he was saying and the GA announcers had to repeat it and make something out of his nothing comments. I know it’s expensive to go to a Georgia game, I’ve had season tickets since ‘86, believe me I know. Saying that, I’m as disappointed as anyone else. I was as happy as anyone two short years ago when we finished strong to end up #2, and were a missed field goal at Carolina (by our best kicker in 20 years, no less) from playing for the conference title. We lost a receiver, tailback, quarterback, cornerback from last years’ team, and replaced them with good talent, and very little experience. Give it a rest, CMR knows his business.

Bernie Matt, YOU are so right man. I love SEC football and “no” never cared too much for TECH until they finally got smart and hired a man by the name of Paul Johnson. I have watched UGA football all my life and it has been a coaching disappointment. Golf, look at the talent that man had. Donnan, good talent but they loved their drugs too much. Richt, who is a good coach, person, christian is way too conservative. But I stayed agrivated watching GA over the years. Few times they looked great all around as a team putting together a complete game. They lived and died so long on Van Gorder’s defense. Richt called so conservative it drove me nutts. And all these people calling for Bobo’s head come on. I could call every play before the snap when Richt did the play calling from the sideline. And oh my gosh that year Joe T. started the Florida game and ran the same qb draw over and over. To me Bobo has mixed it up better. But the plan is the same. I understand UGA keeps guys that commit to them. But the class has been high year after year and we aren’t very good. Joe Cox has been in that system too long not to be better. Still starring down recievers like he’s still in High School. Now LSU and Florida seem to sign a lot every year, so their cutting a lot later somewhere. When you do it the way UGA has and you lose players the reserves aren’t that great. If I was a top recruit I would not pick UGA from what I’ve seen over the years. Paul Johnson would be my man unless I was a big time wide out. To me GA’s offense has to have too many things to happen inorder to work. What I don’t understand is why the line is so bad, when UGA’s line coach was so wanted and considered so good. I love the person Richt is, but he’s made a lot of money, they should be better, and I want to see GA win. I said it when he got the job and a lot of people think I’m crazy. But they will see I am right. PAUL JOHNSON WILL TAKE OVER THE STATE OF GA. UGA should have hired him when he applied from GA Southern after Dunnan. He will make yall pay for that one. He already has. He doesn’t have the recruits the rest of them have and still beating them. All you guys leave Bernie Matt alone he’s only speaking the truth sorry if it hurts. But the truth is the truth.

What in the h$ll is wrong with losing anyway? Winning is greatly over-rated. When teams lose often, expectations are more realistic. Winning too often causes the fans to act delusional like they ought to win a conference or national championship every year. Just look at the mess Urban Myer has gotten himself into by winning two SEC and National Titles in the past three years. Now all those Florida fans will be delusional and think that the title belongs to them every year. Coach Myer will catch h$ll when this doesn’t happen. It’s far better to be a sorry, losing team with tiny expectations that lead to no disappointments and no delusions. There are more advantages: the home game traffic is lighter, less attendees at games mean the lines to the concession stands and restrooms are much shorter and ESPN gameday analysts don’t badger your team with ignorant and irrelevant observations. And of course, the tropy case maintains a rather beautiful emptiness that can’t be dublicated with championships. To all you genuine Dawg Fans, experience the wonder of losing with grace and humor that only mediocrity affords.

Wasn’t David Pollack was a fullback before he moved to DE? If so, that was the best change of position in UGA football history.
Also, for the Tech fans out there, when you only win one game in 8 years, you still suck. You play a weak ACC schedule, and your defense is worse than ours.

I think that Mark Richt needs to change the coaching before he changes the players because good coaching on both sides of the ball is crucial to success in this division. Samuel should either be moved to fullback or linebacker in my opinion, but only after some coaching changes are made first.

I think BANDWAGONS are just great as long as it is our, UGA’s, bandwagon. Winners produce bandwagons, folks. It’s a fact. I’d love to be on one but alas as long as CMR and company are in charge, we’ll have neither the band nor the wagon.
And by the way, you CMR defenders, how do you psych out us not offering that Gainesville kid? CMR first went to see him four years ago according to the AJC story and we continued to recruit him to the present, but no offer until now? Saban came, he saw, he offered, he conquered. That kid is going to Bama.
Wake up or we will be saying that over and over again. Substitute Meyer for Saban and you got the picture. Our group of coaches have gotten so complacent that they can’t even drive 45 miles to Gainesville to reel him in. Better still, an overnight letter to the kid with the offer. This scenario doesn’t make sense to me. Does it to you? We make too many mistakes in recruiting like that, ONE is too many.
But how about this? Remember the kid who came to Athens in late summer/early fall whose scholly had been revoked but they didn’t tell him. His parents came with him. A screwup in the extreme. No excuse for that either. Can you imagine how they felt when told their son no longer had an offer from UGA? Plain outrageous. Yet CMR will want to retain those responsible because he feels badly for their families if he should axe them. I do too. But people who can’t or don’t perform get axed everyday.
This staff has presided over a four year decline and it’s picking up memometum.
Repeat, this will be the FOURTH STRAIGHT YEAR without us winning the SEC East. And we rebuild anew next year because we have no seasoned QB to step in for Joe.
CMR is crapping on his legacy of his first four years at UGA because he’s just not with it anymore. Talking about a third string change in the off week before Florida? Huh? There is something dreadfully wrong on Ag Hill in Athens and I wish I knew what it was.
It is time for a change. CMW and CMB should be the first to go. . . voluntarily would be the best way. Bobo might be an offensive genius in the making but we can’t wait that long. I’m looking for dramatic changes come the day after the Yech game. I would bet that CMW and Bobo resign so as to better their chances of gainful coaching employment. Firing puts you in the hole. And friend CMR doesn’t have to fire them. CMR goes after next season.
WE CAN AND MUST MAKE CHANGES! IF NOT NOW, WHEN?

The question is whether Samuel can tackle anyone standing straight up like he does when he runs. That said, he is fast and strong, and maybe not having to break tackles, which he is terrible at, would allow his talents to be used better on defense.

djawjuh – If you want to be taken seriously regarding recruiting, you need to actually understand the situations.
Gainsville kid – This was no mistake. He’s just now getting barely good enough. We chose not to offer him until now because he’s a mediocre recruit. Not a head scratcher at all. Richt saw him way more often than Saban and knew that this was a borderline recruit. Same with all his other teammates. Our coaches are well aware of each of them, and have chosen not to offer.
Columbus kid – I feel bad that the kid thought he had been offered, but just because he wanted to be a UGA player doesn’t mean he had an offer.

Well, if the Gainsville kid is such a mediocre recruit. What was Cox? He was a 3 star rated QB. And Blake Barnes who we never saw throw a pass. These weren’t good recruits either. What would UGA have done with Tebow? DE/TE/FB I’m not buying the talent evaluation from up there. Saban is a very talented recruiter. I wouldn’t say he was wrong?

I don’t get Richt’s mentality – any position change would be at the end of the season. That kind of stubborness doesn’t help us THIS year. You have a kid who has dropped from 1 to 3 on the RB depth chart and didn’t even see action until the third quarter of the Vandy game – not a good sign. Yet everyone agrees that he has talent and it’s a fact that he was a stud defensive player in high school. Georgia could really, really use some help on defense right now. Anything is bound to be an improvement. Who knows, maybe this kid will get after the qb like David Pollack, or at least Marcus Howard. Maybe he’ll turn into a stud linebacker. It’s worth a shot…this year. Seems like an off week would be a great time for a crash course in a new position.
