Tested team vs. rested team

Athens –You can argue that one team in Saturday’s game -– Georgia -– is tested and toughened by having played two bona fide opponents already this season.

That’s the argument Arkansas coach  Bobby Petrino made on an SEC teleconference Wednesday, contending that Georgia’s  “fast, physical” games against Oklahoma State and South Carolina give the Bulldogs an advantage against his Razorbacks  on Saturday.

“The advantage  Georgia has is that they’ve been in two big games and played against two very good opponents,” Petrino said.

On the other hand, you can argue that the other team in Saturday’s game –-Arkansas -– benefits from having  been able to focus disproportionately on this game because it started the season against uncompetitive Missouri State and then had an open date.

That’s the argument Georgia’s Mark Richt has made more than once this week,  noting that the Razorbacks’ schedule has allowed them to max out on  preparations for the Dogs.

“They have had pretty much the whole off-season to work on us, and also an open date, so I’m sure we will be getting their very best shot scheme-wise and their very best shot physically, mentally and emotionally,” Richt said.

So Saturday night in Fayetteville, Ark., tested team vs.  rested team.

A few other things:

– Richt called Wednesday’s practice “a little lethargic” with “not a ton of energy,” adding: “I think the boys are probably a little bit tired.”  But he didn’t seem overly concerned, noting that  weary legs should have time to recover by Saturday night’s kickoff.

– Sounds like Rod Battle’s UGA football career is over. The senior defensive end suffered a season-ending ACL tear against South Carolina last week, and Richt indicated Wednesday that there  aren’t grounds to seek a medical redshirt that would give Battle a sixth year of eligibility. Battle was redshirted as a freshman in 2005, and to qualify for a medical redshirt this year, there would need to have been an injury-related issue with the ‘05 redshirt as well.  “My guess would be that he would not [be able to get a medical redshirt this year], just because his first year there was no injury involved in the redshirt,” Richt said. “You have to miss two seasons because of injury [to get a sixth year], and we don’t have any documentation that would help him that way.”

– With defensive end Justin Houston’s return from suspension, Jeff Owens likely will settle back in at defensive tackle. Battle’s injury in the second quarter  last week resulted in Owens playing 33 snaps at D-end. “I played more defensive-end snaps than defensive-tackle snaps,” Owens said. It was the first time he had played defensive end in a game since high school. “I think it went well,”  he  said.  “. . .  I’ll do whatever it takes to help my team win.”  Owens’ fellow defensive tackle, Geno Atkins, played considerably at D-end in the opener against Oklahoma State. But Richt said: “I doubt we see them much out there [this week]. Just depends on how the game goes.”

– Georgia had 35 former players on NFL opening-day rosters, sixth most by any college, according to data released by the NFL on Wednesday. LSU and Miami had the most former players on the rosters (41 each),  followed by Texas (37), Southern California (36) and Ohio State (36), then Georgia. The NFL also provided a breakdown of the colleges with the most former  players in the league at each position, and Georgia leads at defensive end (8).

– And here, if you missed it, is yesterday’s post-practice notebook with items on Tavarres King’s  improvement, Caleb King’s status for Saturday and Aaron Murray’s tendinitis.

Arkansas will be overwhelmed with Georgia’s overall team speed. That speed cannot be emulated in practice and it surely wasn’t displayed by the pigs’ first opponent. Dogs over Hogs by two touchdowns.

The Number 34. I would love to share your enthusiasm, but the years of unconsistent play from this team is beginning to wear on my nerves! I’m as big a UGA Fan as the next guy but the penalties, fumbles, special teams mistakes, and inconsistent offense has got me shell shocked. I believe we should win this game on talent alone, but I now take nothing for granted watching this schizophrenic Coaching Staff call games….Instead of excitement I wait for the shoe to drop.

what’s the number of points that you’d be happy with the defense giving up? 17,20,24,,,,,0. i think 0 is most of the folks on this blogs answer…just not realistic people. seriously, how many points would you be happy with giving up? we’ve played 2 games and the D, minus the mistakes on offense and special teams, are giving up around 20 pts a game… that 37 last week, you simply can’t fault the defense for 17 of those.

as far as this week, would you be okay with holding Arkansas( R- Kansas) with, oh, 6 field goals. how would that sit with ya???

Petrino knows college offense schemes. He was Head Coach of O at Auburn and head man at Lville. He does know how to scheme at this level. His team is already tops in several O categories within the SEC so far after one game.

The only answer for a good college coach like he is …………… is to play smart D. Can we stay with his ALL SEC tight end? Can we sack Mallet? Can we bull rush his line and try to exploit the Ark QB’s seemingly inability to move around like Garcia did?

Can we really introduce Caleb King into the mix at T Back in a meaningful way? Can he show a totally diffeenrt style of running to Arkansas? Can he sprint if he finds a crease or seam??

Can Cox look off of AJ and hit a secondary receiver? Will he use #1 and #2 on O?? Will we use Rontavious Wooten and Marvelous Marvin? Will Orson Charles continue to impress us all??

Can Logan come in and spell Co if needed ??

IF we gell …………..UGA 35- Arkansas 28 In another wild one.

And, yes AJC, Ryan Mallett has a cannon arm, not a mullet. I just hope the Razorbacks D is as lousy as their ’sposed to be. Although we could take this time to blast the Tech posters for their team’s perfomance last night, I am not going to do so. The only thing I have to say about it is, Tech fans have no room to post anything about UGA’s defense, or coaching, anymore. CPJ’s behavior on the sideline last night was inexcusable.

Arkansas will be a tough game. It will be a very similar atmosphere to Stillwater. Cox and Co. have experienced it, and should be ready. Getting King back on the field is going to be big. He will complete the backfield. Hopefully, we can establish the run to open up the middle of the field for Green and Charles. Charles has been fantastic this year, but hasn’t really gotten that much pub. We also haven’t really found an identity on offense, which makes us unpredictable. I think that the defense has played fine, they just need to force a couple more turnovers.

The thing I’ve HATED about this Bulldog team and coaches this year is all of the blame they’re tossing Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno’s way for what happened last year.

This year, the TEAM is the star.

It’s better to underthrow the ball than OVERTHROW the ball.

No one wants to blame Willie Martinez for his crap defense and horrible fundamentals.

In those games that Georgia lost, only in ONE game did they lose and deserve to lose. Florida.

Seems to me, I remember that the DEFENSE was the one with the crazy, undisciplined, and most importantly, AVOIDABLE penalties against Alabama.

Seems to me, I remember that the DEFENSE was the ones with the bad fundamentals and couldn’t tackle Tech.

Yet, I remember the coaches blaming the players then.

But WHO coaches discipline?

But WHO is supposed to be coaching fundamentals?

This whole team pisses me off this year. A bunch of ingrates, blaming guys who came to Georgia from out of state to win a title, and who were let down by the COACHES.

First, Martinez, because he’s terrible.

Second, Richt, for not having the guts to do the right thing and firing Martinez.

There is one area where this team is just like Matthew Stafford, and that is that we are the dead last worst team in the nation in turnovers. Dead last worst team in the nation in penalties. Dead last worst team in the nation in rushing. Dead last worst team in the nation in kickoffs. Dead last worst team in the nation in Pass Defense.

Have to give it to us for that.

We are consistent.

Consistently, the worst coached team in the nation.

Ton of talent.

Can’t coach the kids.

Joe Cox is Number 12 in the nation in NCAA Pass Efficiency, not for this game, but for the season.

Our rushing offense, however, is Number 85 in the nation.

Scoring Defense, we are Number 108 and Total Defense Number 97.

Punt Returns, we are Number 117.

Turnover Margin, Number 116.

Matthew Stafford ended his unheralded career here with 18 fumbles, 33 interceptions and 51 TD passes. That is 51 fumbles and interceptions and 51 TD passes.

Coach Richt has to get over this group of friends on his staff, and get a staff in here who can coach or in his next job, Coach Richt will actually admit that his coaching staff is very poor.

And, for all the talent of a Top Half a Dozen Recruiting Ranking every year since 2001, do you want to explain with no senior and no junior who he planned to be his RB ? Who he planned to be his DE ? Whom did he plan would actually break up a pass play on Defense ? Why we signed 2 QB, brought them both in early, and have not even let Joe Cox take a snap before this year, and now the same with Logan Gray ? What the hell is this all about and we say the strength of this “coaching staff” is that they recruit well. Look at Fullback where he has both Chapas and Munzenmaier who are both Juniors, and not another scholarship Fullback in sight – and, no commitments from a FB either.

Honest to God Coach Richt, they do not have a frigin’ clue on your “coaching staff” son.

It is embarrassing football your “coaching staff” produced the entire Matthew Stafford Era.

I would not call this season a success either.

South Carolina and Arkansas are NEITHER ranked football teams. Nor would anyone say they should be. Either one. And, Okie State ? Houston kicked their fannies. Rice nearly did today. Every team Okie State has played played Okie State better than your “coaching staff” could coach all this talent we HANDED to YOU Coach Richt.

Get a coaching staff, Coach Richt. And, quit defending your “coaching staff” when they are beyond defending. Their record at teaching their position speaks for itself. You can just mail in the games against LSU and Florida the way your “coaching staff” teaches their positions. You haven’t played the good teams yet, and with your “coaching staff” you have no hope, sir. Aren’t you embarrassed by your “coaching staff” yet Coach Richt ?

Then, you NEVER hear from the guy ever again in his lifetime around here.

Some of them don’t even go on to careers in sports writing elsewhere.

They just fall off the map forever.

Where is Chipper Towers, for example ?

I have to admit that Tim Tucker is the best we have seen back to Mark Schlabach.

These Mark Bradley types and Chip Towers types and Tony Barnhart types – these are NOT sports media writers.

First, to write about it, you have to have some bloody clue.

AJ-C has space to fill.

Only requirement.

Today, they have a poll, is Joe Cox what you expected yes or no. How full of crap. I said before the Spring Game and every day since in here that Joe Cox would do better than Matthew Stafford.

Continually jumping on and off the bandwagon is very bad for your knees. How about some fair weather Dogs’ fans coming on here and man up about the nasty comments I’ve seen on this blog concerning Joe Cox? There were just so many of you that I can’t keep up with the names. I do remember an Island Dawg, Truman08, and someone who called himself Hugedawgfan who posted that he was fed up with the Dogs after only 1 game. Hugedawgfan change your freakin name.

BR,

You’re right. Tech is NOT ranked in either the AP Poll nor is Tech ranked in the Coaches’ Poll.

Of course, UGA is the only team who has been ranked in every Final AP Poll starting 1997.

What I want to know is where are the Tech fans (both of them.)
