Where’s Marlon Brown? And other stuff.

Athens –  A few things I thought you might find of interest from Tuesday that didn’t make it into my stories:

–   Surprisingly, Marlon Brown and Rantavious Wooten –- the touted freshmen receivers –- have been non-factors in the first two games.  They didn’t get into Game 1 and barely got into Game 2.  Quarterback Joe Cox offered an explanation   for why they haven’t been part of the receiving rotation yet:

“I definitely think they can help us, but we want to make sure they know what to do,” Cox said.  “It gets crazy trying to hear my call in the huddle, and then we start moving tight ends and doing certain motions with them. We just want to make sure they have it down. They definitely have the ability, but you don’t want to have them come in and miss something important because they weren’t sure. . . . You can tell they are learning every week, and they’re anxious to play . . . and that’s good.  I can’t wait for them to get in there and help us out because I know they can.”

– As I noted  yesterday, Georgia ranks  108th among major-college teams in penalties with 83 yards per game through two games. That’s after being assessed 13 penalties for 108 yards vs. South Carolina. Mark Richt addressed the issue,  saying he doesn’t like it “but it doesn’t make me crazy.”

“We’ll keep disciplining it,” he said of penalties.  But he added: “The way we played with energy, fire and enthusiasm the whole game –- if the byproduct of that is penalties, I’ll take that over a team that doesn’t have a penalty but doesn’t have a pulse to go with it. ”

Richt said certain penalties, like being offsides or having too many players on the field, are inexcusable.  Others, he indicated, can be subjective or the result of playing with passion.

–   Justin Houston is happy to be back from a two-game suspension,  but he is  pained by the loss of fellow defensive end Rod Battle to a season-ending and maybe career-ending ACL tear.  “That hurt me to my heart when I saw him go down,” Houston said.

On a lighter note, Houston figures one of the happiest people to see him back in action will be Jeff Owens, the defensive tackle who got  considerable action at D-end after Battle was injured in the second quarter of last week’s game. Owens wound up playing 33 snaps at D-end, Houston said, “so I think he appreciates me coming back.”

– A few other things, quickly:  Richt said the blocking on the kickoff  return team showed “astounding” improvement from Game 1 to Game 2. . . . Backup safety Quintin  Banks has been cleared to play after a preseason knee injury, but didn’t get into last week’s game because of missed practice reps. “I wouldn’t say he’s 100 percent back to the best Quintin Banks can be,” Richt said. . . . Injuries at linebacker have resulted in Marcus Washington shifting back to that position from defensive end, where he worked most of preseason. . . . . And here’s a story I enjoyed doing on  Branden and Brandon.

It’s too bad when Richt is talking about the team playing with energy, fire and enthusiasm that he couldn’t include himself in that mix. Talk about someone with no pulse!!! He is too busy adjusting his sunglasses or hanging out with the water girl to be concerned about what is going on. I don’t know if he is aware of it (apparently not) but you can do all those things without committing penalties, but typical Richt has to alibi or have an excuse for all his coaches faux pas.

Look at the lowest ranked team in terms of penalties and you are going to see many of the top ranked teams in term of success every single year. At the point where UGA got such chatter about it last year, you could see, Fl, OK, OSU, TX, USC right there too in the 90s, and 100s.

It’s not the number of penalties, as much as the timing and situation that they need to work on.

Marlon Brown and Wooten will see playing time, but as Cox said don’t want any mistakes on assingments during a close game, besides AJ Green didn’t get nearly enough passes thrown his way against SC. The other starting reciever Taveres King has been playing very well with some good catches and CMR stated how well he is at blocking. AJ green had major block on the 61 yard touchdown run by Smith so why would you take a chance on a younger reciever in a close game. No doubt when their time comes Brown and Wooten will make a big impact.

I personally just want Cox to not to telegram which receiver he plans to throw to. He is off sec or so on his release on most throws to receivers he is eyeballing. I haven’t seen good pump fakes or crisp throws where the receiver can run and not break stride. (Two good touch passes to Green in Columbia, though). Brown and Wooten and the other receivers will thrive if Cox can make improvement in a hurry! Bobo, the ball is in your court. Be identified as a CLEVER SEC OC not a predictable one. We have the receivers: you and Cox are going to need to start executing your respective jobs at a higher level if we are going to beat our predicted year end record.

I guess I am a fan of the other form of management style. In a crisis, I do not want my coach throwing things, yelling at players or kicking dogs(pun intended). I want him to be calm in the face of the storm. Save the ranting and raving for the lockerroom. Stalk the sidelines with the look that says, I have it under control. The players will gain inspiration from that mannerism.

Fellow Dawgs In my playing days I played for headcoaches who were the fiery guys on the sidelines and also those who were calm and I can tell you I preferred the calm/level headed coach because they generally had a better feel for the game. Now having said that they still would let the officials know when they had made or were making horrible calls and IMHO while I generally like it that Coach Richt keeps a calm head about himself on the sidelines he still needs to be getting onto the officials about bad calls, especially spotting of the ball. In both of our games so far the officials have been spotting the ball forward for our opponents- OK ST and South Carolina and spotting it back on us. This has caused us to be 3rd and 2 to 3 yards instead of first down and 10 or 3rd and less than a yard which has caused some of the inconsistency on offense. He also needs to be more observant on our play calling in that we have had very good success running the ball but for some reason have abandoned the run for multiple series in both games which also has led to some of our inconsistency on offense and also left our defense on the field way too much.

Hopefully with Houston returning we can actually get a rush on the opposing QB and we can start disguising our defensive schemes better as it has seemed in both ballgames that they knew exactly what to go to whenever we made adjustments on defense and they were able to stay one step ahead of us.

RC, I had said a couple of days ago, that when Our last QB had completed less than 50% of his passes, and had 4 Ints. 0 TDs, in 3 yrs worth of SC games, maybe this boy Joe didn’t do too bad. The guys before him, didnt exactly light it up either I see.

Seems to me if MS had a game at 70%, 200+ yds, 2TD, 1 Ints, everybody used to say he had done all he could.

I am with Altamaha, what happened to Israel Troupe? He made some very nice catches last year, along with some rookie mistakes. I thought he would step up this year with half of our receiving corps being freshmen. Although, I am ready to see Marlon and Wooten, I have been pleased with the contributions of Mikey and King. Mikey belongs in the slot so if Brown steps up as an outside receiver as we expect him too, we will be very difficult to game plan for. I also hope that Houston brings the pop that we are expecting. We need our defensive ends closing the pocket around QBs. Our DT’s are fully capable of stuffing the middle as we have seen against the run the last two weeks but we need some pressure and contain from the DEs to really free up our secondary to start getting those crucial takeaways that we have been lacking. Looking for a big statement against the pigs!!

If Brown and Wooten can’t learn the playbook, hire someone to tutor them. We can definitely afford it. Why not put Abry Jones at defensive end? Thats what he played in high school and is allot faster than Jeff Owens. And Alabama plays mistake free football and I don’t see a passion problem with them.

Attn Tim Tucker and the AJC staff:

Boykin’s 100-yard KO return is not the longest TD in Sanford Stadium History. It is the longest Kickoff return in UGA History.

in 2003 vs. Auburn, Odell Thurman had a 103 or 104 yard INT return for a TD. See You Tube Clip below:

Check your facts…Alabama committed 17 penalties just a couple of weeks ago against Virgina Tech. I agree on penalties.. Our first game, we had 4. Last week, 13 penalties (it is widely known that the officiating crew last week loves to throw flags). Keep up the aggressive play, cut out offsides, too many men on field, and motion penalties and we will be fine!

I believe the offence will be fine when we develop some rhythm which I believe means running the ball and short passes to help Joe. Blitzes are usaly a sign that your defence in not getting enough penetration and leaves others to cover your territory and that is a gamble that often burns. CMR will get this team in the position to win and we (Bulldogs) will have a very sucessfull year. I am a glass half kind of pearson and use my strong faith accordingly. Just saying.

I think the Dogs offense will have some wrinkles in it this week. I think you might see more 4WR sets to expose the week secondary of the pigs. I predict it will be this week that Wooten and Brown get in about 7-12 snaps. On top of spreading the field the Dogs will go back to a power eye and pound the ball. The more time taken off the clock the less Petrino can do.

Shannon: Caleb King practiced yesterday and showed progress from last week, according to Mike Bobo. Whether he plays this week depends on how his hamstring holds up at practice today and tomorrow. CMR said yesterday he again hopes Caleb will play this week.
Realitycheck: As your stats show, Cox became the first UGA QB since 2004 to throw a touchdown pass vs. South Carolina.
billytdoogan: UGA records have Thurman’s interception return vs. Auburn in 2003 as a 99-yarder.

He’ll take penalties over no life in his players??? That’s one of the dumbest things i’ve ever heard as a coach. It is possible to play with energy and not play undisciplined, teams do it at every level all of the country. Our linebacker play has been spotty outside of Curran. Gamble just whiffed on Garcia when he was scramblin around last weekend, but we need an upgrade at the linebacker position. Once we begin to tackle well i think our defense has a chance to be decent. The amount of trash tossed on the ground during and after UGA football games is disturbing. It’s not that hard to bring a trash bag and put your crap in it. UGA will pick them up later. As they mention, President Adams can and will crack down on tailgating if this continues.

Can someone please tell CMR that you HAVE TO make the other team punt on 4th down. There is no rule that makes them punt. You force it. The first 3 punts for Okie St., we had 1 guy stay and all others turn and run away at the snap! It kills me that our defense forces a 4th and 7 and he doesn’t make them punt.
CWM teaching our DBs to face guard and not look at the ball accomplishes 4 things:
1. More interferences penalties, especially if the ball is short.
2. No interceptions.
3. Lower draft position for the players – illegal in the NFL.
4. More losses.
DBs, after 20 yards, the receiver isn’t making cuts. Run next to him and find the BALL. Catch the BALL.
Love the Dawgs, frustrated to no end.

Good to finally hear something about Brown and Wooten, but I would love to hear something about Murray…did he really hurt his arm, as stated in a previous blog…last I heard was that he didn’t know all of the playbook…well Cox may know all of the playbook, but he can’t run all the plays…also, in another article Bobo stated that he gave the game film over a weekend to break down the QB position…well, according to Bobo he came in on Monday and had broken down the entire offense, position by position…yea, doesn’t know the playbook…the kid graduated from the best public school in Tampa a semester early to enroll at UGA in time for spring ball…graduated from H.S. w/ something like a 5.0 avg in the AP course, had somewhere close to 1300 on his boards, just made the honor roll at UGA again, yea, I believe ya’ coach, Murray can’t learn the playbook…Barkley’s starting, Savage is starting, and Murray has to wait until next year to get game experience, because why…keep this up and it’ll be “the real” USC or UGA, Ohio State or UGA, Texas or UGA, Florida or UGA and the pick will be obvious to recruits…anybody recruit watching this season so far must just be scratching their heads over this coaching staff, and if you don’t think it matters then you better take off the rose colored glasses…UGA will still be in the Top Ten in recruiting every year, but you’ll be getting what’s already been picked over from the Big 4 and any up and coming program w/ a new aggressive coaching staff…CMR reminds me of Dungy when he was in Tampa, great teams, but couldn’t get the job done….granted NC’s are very hard to come by, but being in “Transition Mode” every year is not a good thing…is it safe for me to assume that this is one of the top recruiting classes that UGA has ever had? It’s high time make something happen!

I’m talking all my crap now because after tomorrows but whippin we’re going to take against Miami we’ll be 2 and 1 and should be 1 and 2 if we didn’t get so lucky against Clemson. Plus once we lose to UNC, UGA, VA Tech and Vandy I won’t be able to say nothing. We’re lucky to go 7 and 5 this year. Has anyone seen my boyfriend m? He hasn’t come home from his 8am class? Maybe he went straight to bulldogs again.

Carl as stats pointed out Cox is doing just fine. Murray he is another highly hyped QB same as Stafford who did not win a championship and numerous Florida guys FSU has had over the past 5-10 yers which have amounted to nothing. If you were going to want another QB atleast ask for Logan. He knows the playbook and looked good in the spring game.

Good to hear Houston is coming back. Caleb needs to get in and take some reps. Thomas needs to be used in more of a Percy Harvin roll, put him in motion, line him up the slot, get him in space. Thomas is electric but you need more of a gap to get him in the open than Samuel or hopefully Caleb.

Altamaha: That is interesting that some of the best teams have been some of the most penalized (I didn’t know that) and I don’t disagree that the type and timing of the penalties is very important. Last year it was a killer starting with Alabama having a recovered fumble called back for a UGA penalty and against FL having an interception called back for the same. Those hurt.

Being next to last in turnover ratio and near the worst in penalties surely can’t be a good combination. I don’t like hearing Richt state that he can live wth 13 penalties in a game if it because we are being so aggressive. I didn’t see much evidence of our defense being aggressive Saturday night what with our giving up 26 1st downs and playing 8-12 yards off of the receivers pre-snap.

Playing soft coverage and being among the most penalized is like being fat dumb and lazy… to quote Dean Wormer “that is no way to go through life son!”

Otto…believe me when I say this, Murray is not a run of the mill QB…don’t know if Gray should be playing, but I do know that you had a QB w/ flu like symptoms and they didn’t even trust him enough to give Cox a break…Cox is getting the job done? The team’s record is 1 and 1 against teams that sccording to the homers on this blog are not even in the same league as UGA…do you ever wonder why Bobo’s offense looks so bad, well take a look behind center…Bobo’s hands are tied w/ what Cox can run and he can call…I’d welcome to see Gray come in the game, I’d just like to see a little spark out of the QB position…heck, bring on Met to air it out to one of the wideouts…

Dawgs have weapons that can be utilized its just up to the coaches to see where they can use these weapons to our advantage. Cox just seems to be a bit slow on gettin thru his reads and needs to speed it up a bit.

Pope Richt needs to get with the SEC Coaches’Program. Smell blood, go for the kill. Talking about his players plays with buring fires. What a joke. These are not the Junkyard Dawgs defense. We need to get better coaches from top to bottom. OC, DC, needs to go. They sucks! If Pope Richt wants to keep them, then he might as well leave too. Top coaches knows how to win game and Richt doesn’t have it. He just got lucky that UGA gave him the oppt.

Dawgs have no defense. No matter how you spin it, the defense sucks. We can’t penetrate and get to the QB, we can’t cover receivers without facemasking or getting pass interference calls. Our linebackers can’t read pass routes. In days gone by we bent but never broke, well fellas the dam has major cracks and will break soon. We will be lucky to win 6 games this year. Richt had better do some soul searching and get rid of Martinez and BOBO. In the old days we didn’t have the best of QB’s, but we still managed to beat Florida, Auburn, South Carolina,Clemson and Tech almost every year.Enough is enough!!

I have been learning a lot from these blogs and I have applied for the posistion of Head Football Coach at the University of Georgia. New blood is needed in the program and I am as new as you can get, having never been a Head coach, or a college assistant coach, or a Division 1 football player. I will be the fan’s coach. If you guys yell for me to go for it on fourth down I am going for it, be it a fourth and one or fourth and twentyseven. Boo a kid and that sorry sucker is getting yanked so fast his head will be spinning! Hell, I’ll even stop by when ya’ll are tailgaiting and drink some of your beer! I will work for 500 bucks a week and a company car, oh, and a condo in downtown Athens. Some free passes and a tab at the 40 Watt Club when the Drive By Truckers are there wouldn’t hurt either. I see no need for a morals clause in my contract, I am not Tony Soprano, besides, if I want to take some twenytwo year old art history major to the beac, er, the Marine Research Center so she can study “like fish and whales and like, stuff” that’s my business. I do demand an eight figure buyout, if it’s good enough for Charlie Weis it’s good enough for me.

Keep running the ball.. samuel looks so close some plays to busting the big one.. im sure if we can get him 1 big play he will thrive off of it… as for aj green hes a freak but he gets double so much its hard to get him involved… throw MARLON BROWN 6′5 out wide right and AJ wide left then lets see them double aj with a fast te like charles running underneath.. i like our chances this season to make a stand in the SEC but we cannot allow our defense to be on the field all game long with the 4-3 scheme but thats a whole other issue (martinez) nevertheless LETS SIC THEM HOGS

Wouldn’t it be great to see Brown, Green, Charles, Wooten , etc. in the game at the same time and give Cox a chance at this type of offensive scheme…as much as I would like to see Murray play, I’d really like to see Cox get the respect a div 1 SEC QB deserves by putting in a top flight game plan…it just seems that the game plan is so vanilla and cautious…give him a chance to shine, open it up and shock the heck out of them…”Wooble & Win” w/ Joe…come on put the speed team out there and if doesn’t work then the plays from the prior two games can always be brought back…

CMR needs to realize that penalties and energy do not have to go hand and hand. This is what seperates the good from the best.

Could you imagine Bear Bryrant or Vince Lombardi or Bill Parcells EVER saying something this stupid??????:

After being assessed 13 penalties for 108 yards vs.

Unfortunately, this program will never compete for a national championship with Richt at the helm.

Based on what I’ve seen of our offense, it is more than a little scary that these guys haven’t picked up what’s going on. AJ played form the get-go last year. What’s this tell us about these two?

Sure AJ played as a true freshman last year, AGAINST GEORGIA SOUTHERN! Say what you want about Oklahoma State, but there has been far less margin for error in our first two games this year. If we had started the year against Tennessee Tech, Marlon, Wooten (the ballcarriah) and Troupe would have all played. I totally understand that until we build a significant lead against a team, we will not put these guys in a position to fail.
