Athens — Joe Cox will play, and Caleb King probably won’t. Darius Dewberry won’t play, and Kiante Tripp might.
Details on the Cox situation are here and here.
As for the others:
– King: After saying at the start of the week that King -– limited since Aug. 12 because of a pulled hamstring — would play against South Carolina on Saturday, Mark Richt said yesterday that King is, at best, doubtful. “The last couple of days [Tuesday-Wednesday], he wasn’t able to go through the whole practice,” Richt said. “So I would say, if you had to gauge it, it’d be doubtful that he would play.” Sounds like a heavy load for Richard Samuel again this week.
– Dewberry: Last week’s starter at strongside linebacker “pulled a [groin] muscle again and will not participate in the game,” Richt said. Akeem Dent is expected to replace him as the starter.
– Tripp: The backup defensive end, who missed last week’s game with a shoulder injury, has been back at practice this week. “Will he be able to play? Yes,” Richt said. “How much he’ll play, if he plays, I don’t know that answer.”
————————-
A few other notes:
– Speaking of defensive ends, Richt shed some light on last week’s use of defensive tackle Geno Atkins at D-end.
“Part of that had to do with a particular play that Okie State liked to run that the bigger, more physical and meaner the defensive ends, the better it would be,” Richt said. “It wasn’t so much that we are short of D-ends as it was a schematic thing that we thought would help us against a certain thing they like to do, which they never really got untracked and didn’t hurt us with.”
To have the best players on the field as much as possible, defensive coaches still like the idea of having Atkins and fellow DT’s Jeff Owens and Kade Weston in games at the same time.
– Team’s still buzzing about the big hit delivered by Reshad Jones on an Okie State receiver in the fourth quarter last week. Notwithstanding the questionable unnecessary-roughness penalty the hit drew, Rennie Curran said: ”I love seeing that from my safeties. . . . We need safeties back there with that hungry mentality that will take your head off.” (If you missed it, check out more from Curran here.)
– Saturday’s game is important in myriad ways, including this one cited by A.J. Green: “Losing that game last week, I just want a victory to get this feeling out of my stomach.”

Hungry Dawg, when are you going to be satisified with something other than statistics-they count for nothing if there is no hardware to show for it-UF had less yards than UGA did, well, who cares. UF has more titles than us and probably will have another unless they repeat a Marshall incident and the plane goes down and wipes out all but 3 or 4 players. I’m so tired of dawg fans saying well we have won 10 or more games lat 7 seasons. CMR’s winning pct is over .750. WE are 34-4 in opponents stadiums under Richt-damn it wake up and demand better. Tired of smelling UF’s arseholes all the time b/c we are constantly chasing them? why can’t we get the production from our 4 and 5 stars like UF and LSU does? got to look at the staff then. not tired of boasting we are 2nd best in East and 3rd best overall in SEC? well, if not then, keep right on licking CMR’s sack then because until there is a staffing change (with dodo oops Bobo and CWM and Fabris and Jancek) then we will always be sucking hind tit.

I so hope UGA gets beat. I am just afraid if the Dawgs don’t win no work will get done Monday. All the dawgs will either still be drunk or will have killed their families and themselves. We will have to see how this turnsout. It was just one game Dawgs.
That makes it 5 of 6 against Clemson for the Jackets. Blame refs when you lose and blame the refs when Tech wins. Now, that is priceless.

Spurrier is better than Richt? YOU LIE
South Carolina: Adulters. Disrespectful. And offenseless.
Who do we need to pay to get South Carolina to secede the Union again?
South Carolina is headed to the Argentina Bowl
Don’t cry for me Argentina!
Spurrier should recruit a QB from Argentina
So you said that you will beat the Dawgs this year? YOU LIE

Went over to ESPN and read this article below. I don’t get it. With all of our highly recruited QBs, Joe is our best chance to win in this condition –
By Joe Schad
ESPN
Georgia quarterback Joe Cox said Friday that he is attempting to play through an injured throwing shoulder.
“It’s nerve problems caused by a muscle that protects my rotator cuff,” Cox said. “One of the muscles that protects the rotator cuff has wasted away and that puts pressure on the rotator cuff.”
Cox said he first felt pain this spring and that his lifting and throwing schedules have been altered.
Cox plans to start against South Carolina on Saturday. Sophomore Logan Gray is ready to play if called upon.
“Most of my pain is away from football,” Cox said. “At night when I sleep. Picking up a bookbag. Driving with my right hand.”
Cox said he does not believe that the injury has affected his velocity. Doctors have told Cox it’s unlikely he’ll need surgery.
“It might not get better,” Cox said. “I might have it forever. I might just have to manage it.”
Cox is also recovering from the flu, which affected him last week. Cox said he has lost nine pounds and only regained his appetite on Wednesday.
“I got the IV before the last game,” Cox said. “I wasn’t breathing well. I was weak. But I’m feeling better now.”
Georgia coaches are saying they believe that right now, Cox gives the team the best chance to win.

Just saw on ESPN that Cox’s shoulder problem is more serious than being reported. They got some inside scoop from a Dr. in Athens that has examined his arm. Cox may start but will probably not make it out of the 1st quarter. Ain’t looking good Dawg fans! The old Ball Coach may have our number tomorrow. I am already worried about Petrino and the trip to Knoxville. Go Dawgs!

Can someone tell my why our coach is starting a QB that has nerve damage in his throwing shoulder. Are you kidding me. I am the biggest Richt supporter in the world but seriously, this is stupid. His loyalty is winning over common since. This is very concerning that Coach Richt cant make the move that obviously needs to be made.

Lone Tumpeter – I trust CMR too, that’s what really worries me. The article also says he lost 9 lbs. and just started eating well Wed. Joe cannot be close to 100%. So, how bad must the coaches think our other options are to say he needs to start.
I’ll be there in support, but I don’t have much confidence in a better result than last week.
Go Dawgs!

Funny – I reprint an ESPN article on this blog at 4:39 (had been up on ESPN for a couple of hours) and Tim Tucker finally gets a story up about the subject which quotes the same article at 5:14. Boy, the AJC stays on top of things, huh? Do I need to run up to Athens and get some other stories for them?

How could you not admire Joe Cox?
This kid has done everything asked of him.
He might be from North Carolina but he is a Georgia Bulldog at heart.

45ACP – never said anything about not admiring Joe Cox. I’ve actually met the kid and think the world of him. Unfortunately, I just can’t see him being the best option to play QB right now given his shoulder problem and just getting over the illness resembling stomach flu.

NewnanDawg , I concur. The kid has waited 4 years. Done everything right.
Now an injury may end or limit his career.
It is very sad.
That’s all I was trying to convey.

Keep dogging on CMR and when Spurrier leaves SC in 4 years, SC will hire CMR. I would love that. Analysis: Dawg’s DL in this game are slightly undermatched to SC OL, but SCs backs are unproven and UGA’s LBs will be all over the place. UGAs DBs are unproven, but so are SCs recievers. SC has unproven skill players, except at TE. Edge UGA.
SC’s DL will play with UGA’s OL for a large portion of the gamwe, but will tire. The same with SC’s LBs vs. UGA’s backs. Cox will be running for his life, but Green will help him in a few key places. UGA’s backs will run in spurts. Edge SC
Special Teams. Kickoff and punt, SC; field goal UGA.

why don’t we try blocking punt’s instead of backing off and giving the other teams a chance to pickup a first down on a fake punt, we’ve been burnt before and it could happen again, given the right coach, like Steve Spurrier.

We have to get Marlon Brown and Wooten in the game. Our receivers can not go the whole year without the rest the freshmen can provide. Also if Cox’s arm is tired, do not play him. We have better players waiting to step in. S[ecial Teams coach has to be fired, i am ready to see a change
