Ten things to know from preseason Week 1

Athens – Before moving on to Week 2 of Georgia’s preseason camp, let’s quickly rewind Week 1. Here are 10 things worth noting and noticing:

1. Chris Davis, who started camp on the second-team offensive line after off-season hip surgery, wasted no time reclaiming a spot on the first unit. By the end of the very first practice, he was there, supplanting Vince Vance at left guard.

2. Finally, Kwame Geathers was cleared academically by the NCAA. But now, he has a long way to go physically to catch up with his teammates who were working out on campus all summer.

3. It’s fun to see how much fun Jeff Owens is having, how much he appreciates being back from knee surgery.

4. In a sign of the times, freshman tailback Washaun Ealey broke the news of his elbow injury on his Facebook page, and Owens tweeted frequent updates on Twitter.

5. Linebacker Darryl Gamble is making a lot of plays — two interceptions and two fumble recoveries in one practice alone.

6. “I’m probably gonna cry!” That’s what freshman WR Marlon Brown said at the mention of the Bulldogs’ preseason tradition for freshmen to get their heads shaved by upperclassmen.

7. So far so good on the all-important comebacks by OT Trinton Sturdivant and DT Owens. “You see no ill effects,” Mark Richt said. “You don’t see them favoring anything.”

8. The decision won’t come until after one or two scrimmages, but it looks and sounds as if Logan Gray has a solid grip on the job of No. 2 quarterback.

9. Rest assured that players and coaches alike are taking a serious attitude toward reducing penalties.

10. And a nice ending to Week 1: Hard-working offensive lineman Casey Nickels was awarded a scholarship after three years as a walk-on.

Allen, I think you mean “Tech fan.” It’s clearly one guy who keeps changing his monniker. That being said, I think OSU will set the tone for the entire season. A win there would really help team momentum.

Ok, fellow classmates and alumni. i really think that this is our year. Allen K. what do you think? I mean we have so much talent. Our QB is awesome. Even though he is a 5th year SR. that throws a wobbly ball, he is awesome. I am just grateful we have him. Also, I cannot wait to see him in action. He has got to be at least one of the best QB’s in the nation. Any thoughts?

I am just worried about OSU running and throwing all over us. They do put up alot of points and they are ranked 11th in the Country and it is in Stillwater. I think the UGA loss will set the tone for the year.

Glad to see that Co-watch Vince Dooley agrees with my assessment that our line(s) of scrimmage will be improved this season and is the prime reason he’s citing that the team will ‘make us happy’…at least I hope he was talking about us. To quote: It’s what’s up front that counts.

I think Lewis G summed up Tech best when he told the story of a young man trying to impress a client and called the Tech Ticket Office with no hope of tickets being available only to find out there were seats left on the 50 yardline. Surprised and stunned he asked what time the game started and the Tech employee asked back “What time can you be here”? As a bonus the young man also got the Tech Defense to wash his car at half time! That to me just says it all. God Bless a Great Dawg like LG.

all blue chip qb recruits look no further than this glowing recommendation by nfl middle linebacker julian peterson on matthew stafford…

“I was like, ‘Okay, I see that’s the reason you’re a No. 1 quarterback,”’ Peterson said. “He’s well above the learning curve. Whoever has coached him up before he got to this level, somebody’s done a good job of keeping him prepared, because he’s very prepared

Tech remains the only Division 1 program that has to employ people to sell tickets on game day in Atlanta. I mean—–do they ever sell out ANY game? Tech is pitiful.

Also, a little trivia warrants mentioning. Remember that sappy movie about Notre Dame titled “Rudy” ?. I know all the ND fans are going to hate me, and I’m not taking anything away from ole Rudy, but he had no talent. So what team did he finally get his ONLY chance to see action?Yep those nerds in gold. Let’s put it this way——–he’d have never seen action against any SEC team, especially Georgia.
Tech was so bad, even the Rudy’s of the world see playing time.
