Ten things to know from preseason Week 1

Athens – Before moving on to Week 2 of Georgia’s preseason camp, let’s quickly rewind Week 1. Here are 10 things worth noting and noticing:

1. Chris Davis, who started camp on the second-team offensive line after off-season hip surgery, wasted no time reclaiming a spot on the first unit. By the end of the very first practice, he was there, supplanting Vince Vance at left guard.

2. Finally, Kwame Geathers was cleared academically by the NCAA. But now, he has a long way to go physically to catch up with his teammates who were working out on campus all summer.

3. It’s fun to see how much fun Jeff Owens is having, how much he appreciates being back from knee surgery.

4. In a sign of the times, freshman tailback Washaun Ealey broke the news of his elbow injury on his Facebook page, and Owens tweeted frequent updates on Twitter.

5. Linebacker Darryl Gamble is making a lot of plays — two interceptions and two fumble recoveries in one practice alone.

6. “I’m probably gonna cry!” That’s what freshman WR Marlon Brown said at the mention of the Bulldogs’ preseason tradition for freshmen to get their heads shaved by upperclassmen.

7. So far so good on the all-important comebacks by OT Trinton Sturdivant and DT Owens. “You see no ill effects,” Mark Richt said. “You don’t see them favoring anything.”

8. The decision won’t come until after one or two scrimmages, but it looks and sounds as if Logan Gray has a solid grip on the job of No. 2 quarterback.

9. Rest assured that players and coaches alike are taking a serious attitude toward reducing penalties.

10. And a nice ending to Week 1: Hard-working offensive lineman Casey Nickels was awarded a scholarship after three years as a walk-on.

The Dawgs need to get both Off & Def line shored up before Ok St. It’s a good thing that we have depth on the Off and a ton of talent on the Def line. Marlon is the real deal, but the key for the WR’s is Tavrris King. He’s had a year to understand the Off and it’s time to step up. Sounds like Darryl Gamble and Renne Curran will be a force a LB.

Tim T,

Is it my imganination or have a not seen a single Dawgs right up that hasn’t included a couple of interceptions? Who’s throwing all these picks? Hopefully not Cox.

I’m glad to see that the D is holding on to the ball but do I have reason to be disturbed the number of opportunities?

One of the big things from the first week of practice is that Willie is still Willie. Play soft … don’t get beat by the big play … arm tackling is o.k. Play like you want … don’t worry about discipline.
We’re going to lose a couple so don’t get too concerned. Willie’s coaching stinks and I can’t stand the smell of WM’s defensive philosophy (if he has one). He’s the weakest spot on the entire Georgia team. Willie needs to go NOW.

i think what JB meant to say was, there hasn’t been a single WRITE UP that hasn’t included a couple of INT’s…now i know that his grammar and spelling weren’t exactly correct, but i do have the same concern that he does…who’s throwing all the picks? i really hope it’s one of the freshmen, and not cox…TIM, see if you could find out for us, please..thanx..

CWM needs to go NOW…have you lost your mind? 20 something days till the 1st game of the season? How many qualified replacements you have in mind..that aren’t employed at the moment that could/would step in and right the defense?? Give the man some slack, last year was bad agreed but if this team plays like the 07 D instead of the 08 D we will be just fine..this year if we don’t show noticeable improvement over last year and he should step down…but really if he was going to go this year he should be gone before now..

I say shave his head anyway it’s TRADITION. You’re either a team player or not. Shave your head like a Man would do or get off the team Pretty Boy.

I have full confidence that Joe Cox and Jeff Owens will take care of this and Vasser will be sporting a Buzz cut like all the other Freshmen.

Take one for the TEAM!

It’s tradition for Georgia freshmen to get their heads shaved by their veteran teammates each preseason, but linebacker Chase Vasser is hoping to avoid the embarrassment. Already sporting some flowing locks, Vasser earned the name “Cush” due to his resemblance to former USC linebacker Brian Cushing.

Hoping to avoid the haircut, Vasser said he struck up a deal with senior Darius Dewberry in which, rather than going completely bald, the freshman can’t cut his hair for a full year.

“I said I’ll grow it out long for a year, so as of right now, I’ll be growing it out long,” Vasser said. “I’ve never had it shaved before, and I don’t know if I might have a giant mole under there or something.”

I guess there are no defined minimum academic standards for Division 1A, which is why a community college like UGA is included. Most UGA football players never make it to the pros, just like Tech football players, and have to get a real job, but the difference is the UGA players end up working for Tech players, or mowing their lawn, or fixing their plumbing & toilets

JB and big dawg 89: Good question about the interceptions in practice. I was wondering that, too. (Remember: Most of the practices are closed to the media.) CMR was asked about it last week, and he basically said that so many balls are thrown in a typical practice that several can be intercepted without it being a bad day for the quarterbacks. Joe Cox was asked about it today, and he said the QBs have been doing a better job of protecting the ball in the past two or three practices.

Yeah, that was some bad grammar but the point still stands. ;-)

Another stereotyping GT nerd.

Can’t you come up with something more original? Use that great techmite education and enlighten us with something original. Anything.

Not everybody wants to be an engineer or a computer geek. UGA has several fine schools that produce great graduates of the best all around college in the state of Georgia.

Go crawl back under your rock and wait 8 more years for another fluke win over UGA in football.

Have you seen GT’s adds trying to sell season tickets on the AJC? It actually says “2008 ACC Champs”. What? They tied for their division of the ACC and lost the tie-breaker to advance to the championship game. The championship game was VT vs. BC (I think 10,000 or so people showed up). What a joke of a program that must use half-truths about being champs of their conference in an attempt to sell tickets. Shouldn’t you just have put co-coastal division chumps who didn’t make it to the championship game? 2008 ACC Champs – as if!!! Losers.

I have watched some of our worst games and have a few points to add. Our special teams were poor. We lacked a kick off specialist and the lack of depth showed. Also, the defense stayed on the field too long. We scored quickly at times and were unable to contol the clock. I expect improvements in all areas.

11. No matter how hard we prepare and play, Georgia has no prayer of beating Florida this year.

Georgia has been irrelevant since Florida started kicking them around.

Tim, you work hard to put up these blogs and you must vommit at the comments you see from these morons. Really, the AJC should just shut down their comments section, or just get people to pay again. This way the people who really wanted to read on UGA football could do so. Sad.

He never could coach and now he thinks he can predict the season. You guys can’t get over the 45-42, just wait until you try to get over 56-6 after this years game. Your pathetic defense will absolutely crumble once PJ turns our offense loose on you. LOL, it’s gonna be fun. 56-6 Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha

Hey UGA: You are OVERATED and will get hammered by OSU, LSU, UF, GT and a surprise from yoru favorite coach Spurrier. That = 5 losses. Hey, maybe you can still win the NC with a 5 loss season. I still think you should hype Joe Cox for the Heisman. That guy is awesome. He makes Tim Tebow look like crap man. LMFAO! Your team sucks azz and so do all your redneck fans. By the way, so what if GT doesn’t sell out their stadium every game. At least we beat your crappy team in front of a billion rednecks. THWG!

Roddy Jones just scored again……………………………………………..214 yards as a Freshman. Man…………………….we really suck azz! By the way, quit whining about our 1-7 record against you, as that is changing. Also, when you win 8 in a row and win a NC, then you can talk crap. 28 years for your beloved doggy’s and 19 for the Jackets. The ACC must not suck that bad, or maybe the SEC sucks, with the exception of UF and LSU. All the other teams are overated as is your crappy school and team. Your academics suck and so does your football team. THWG! GATORS AND JACKETS ROLL! RAMBLE ON AND GATOR STOMPIN IN JAX! Bring your million rednecks to Jacksonville and go home moaning about why you got BLOWN out again. LMFAO!

First off it’s “you’re” not “your.” Secondly, i’m defintely no dem. Third, did I in my post mention that I’m a dog fan?? I moved here from Texas in 02. I’m a college football fan in general and like both UGA and Tech. I’ve got no affiliation w/ either team.

I was actually commenting on fans of both teams who only trash talk and make themselves look like total idiots(take yourself for example). Both teams will be successfull this season. Who wins the game in Nov?? Who knows, let’s just enjoy the greatest sport of all, college football(despite the lack of a playoff system)!

August 10th, 2009

OSU will dominate your UGAG team. 0-1 to start with Spurrier looming on the horizon. Nothing better than UGAG being 0-2 to start the season. Heck, you may even be 0-3 when the 3rd week rolls around. Wouldn’t that shut all you redneck UGAG fans and Alum up! THWG!
