Former UGA stars Greene, Butler join broadcast team

ATHENS – Two former Georgia football stars, Kevin Butler and David Greene, will join the Bulldogs’ radio broadcast team this season.

Butler, an All-America placekicker in the 1980s, and Greene, an All-SEC quarterback earlier this decade, will have roles on the pregame and postgame shows. Butler will work home games and Greene road games.

They complete an expanded cast that will provide nine hours of radio programming each game day.

Georgia associate athletics director Alan Thomas said today that Butler and Greene will add valuable perspective to the broadcasts –- Butler as a College Football Hall of Famer and Greene as a recent player.

“Getting someone who played under [current coach] Mark Richt was important,” Thomas said. “[Greene's] perspective will be one we haven’t had.”

Greene and Butler will be on the air for the first hour of an expanded four-hour pregame show and for the two-hour postgame call-in show. They will join co-host and veteran Georgia broadcaster Jeff Dantzler in both cases.

The postgame show and the opening hour of the pregame will be broadcast from the new Hotel Indigo in downtown Athens for both home and road games, Thomas said.

The other members of the radio team have been previously reported: Scott Howard and Eric Zeier as play-by-play voice and color analyst, respectively; Loran Smith and Neil Williamson as co-hosts of three hours of the pregame show; Smith as sideline reporter; and WSB-TV sports director Chuck Dowdle to conduct postgame locker-room interviews.

Howard also will continue to host Richt’s radio call-in show, and Dowdle will continue as host of Richt’s TV show.  Dantzler and Butler will host the Sunday morning “Bulldog Brunch” radio show.

This will be Georgia’s first season under a new eight-year, $92.8-million marketing and multi-media deal with North Carolina-based ISP, which becomes the radio rights holder. The games and related programming will continue to air in Atlanta on WSB-750 AM.

It seems Georgia is working hard to bring a very outdated radio format up to current standards (supposedly, Lord knows hopefully, the “Mark Richt Show” as well).

As a fan I am glad to see these two of three important upgrades taking effect.

Hopefully an indoor facility will happen as soon as possible.

I don’t understand the seeming need for the athletic department to keep adding more and more people to the broadcast team. I agree with UGA Legacy. Bill Hartman, Jr. has always been my choice when it was apparent Larry was going to retire. Bill does have the voice but his lifetime knowledge of Georgia football growing up in Senior Hartman’s home,as a UGA grauate and then in Atlanta sports media his entire career, would have made him the perfect person to succeed Larry.

Howard was the de facto choice without any competition anyone is aware of. Too bad they did not consider asking Bill.

The word is marketing research folks.

There is a 4 hour pregame show because there are enough Bulldog fans with nothing better to do and it will give good ratings.

Just like something as uninteresting as to who will be on said 4 hour show draws an AJC blog – they know every Tom, Dick & Harry that has nothing to do at the moment (and yes, that would include me this time) will respond, creating website hits and increasing revenue.

So critisize whatever you want, that’s your right (though anybody saying anything negative about Larry is a scumbag). I’m just a college football fan in general and a neutral observer reminding everybody that to question virtually anything media related only shows your ignorance, because the research has been made to make it a profitable venture.
