Talking football . . .
(Hey. Just a note that this is my last post for a while. I’m on vacation until July 14. By then, we’ll be only about a week away from SEC football media days, to be soon followed by the start of preseason practice . . . and, before you know it, the trip to Stillwater. For now, here are a couple of stories I did on the impact of Georgia’s ultra-lucrative new marketing and media deals — this one about how some of the new money will be spent and this one about the effect on the fans.)
Athens — About once a week in the quiet months between spring ball and preseason practice, a number of Georgia football players meet with beat reporters covering the team at the Butts-Mehre building. Honestly, these sessions don’t generate much news. But here are a few things I picked up in this week’s availability:
– Another voice expressed the view that the defense is motivated to redeem itself after last year’s debacles. “I feel we don’t get as much respect as we need to, but that comes in due time,” linebacker Marcus Dowtin said. “Based on some of the things that happened over last year, I think we kind of got looked down upon. I mean, we have a lot to improve on, and that’s what we’re working hard to do this year.” Asked if he’s approaching the season with a chip on his shoulder, Dowtin said: “The whole defense is . . . preparing like that, working hard. I feel personally that I’m definitely working harder preparing with a chip on my shoulder because I have a lot to prove.”
– As you know, there’s lots of need –- and opportunity –- at the receiver position, where the Dogs will be looking for guys to step up beyond sophomore star A.J. Green and productive senior Michael Moore. In his second season in the program, Tavarres King thinks he’s ready to play a big role. “I’ve got a long way to go, but I’m feeling more comfortable,” King said. “The speed of the game has kind of slowed down to me.” He’s put on eight pounds since the end of spring practice, to 184.
– King said the reality is that Green “is going to get double-teamed. He got double-teamed a lot last year. But it’s very important to find that guy [to take some pressure off]. It could be Marlon Brown, could be Rantavious Wooten, could be Mike Moore, Israel Troupe, myself.” King said the receivers, as a group, are “viewing it as an opportunity. Eveybody’s eyes are wide open for this thing.”
– Like others, King thinks freshman tight end Orson Charles and freshman cornerback Branden Smith will contribute at WR. On Charles: “Orson is awesome. . . He’s always ready to go. You can tell he’s got his head on his shouders. He’s always focused, excited. He’s a smooth cat.” On Smith: “Branden can run like a gazelle.”
— Richard Samuel, the sophomore tailback who missed spring practice after wrist surgery, said he’s not quite 100 percent yet. “I can’t do as much weight” as before the injury, he said. But he reiterated he’ll be a full participant in the battle for the tailback job come August.
– Samuel agreed the tailback battle will be decided by much more than ball carrying. “Basically what the coach looks for [is] someone who can still get the job done without the ball –- running your routes, making the right blocks, making the right reads,” Samuel said. “So having those components is essential . . to be the starting running back or the running back who gets the most touches.”
– I missed the visit with tackle Trinton Sturdivant while working on another story elsewhere, but he told my esteemed colleagues on the beat that the versatile offensive line is working out this summer with a stable No. 1 unit: LT Sturdivant, LG Vince Vance, C Ben Jones, RG Cordy Glenn and RT Clint Boling. Of course, no one will be surprised if that changes a bit by Sept. 5. Sturdivant, who missed all of last season after knee surgery, is 100 percent.
– And finally, Samuel weighed in on the team’s attitude and approach: “Everybody is working harder, pushing themselves harder. Everybody is just striving, striving for the best. . . . Basically, the team is leading the team. We are not allowing anybody to slack off.”

I hope the attitude Marcus Dowtin has is with the entire Defense. My biggest problem with Georgia’s Defense (and any football team I like for that matter) is with a little thing called TACKLING. I mean really how hard is it to wrap a guy up or grab his leg as you are going down. I mean you are already there, dont shoulder bump and hope he goes down or out of bounds. Wrap him up and make him go DOWN!! And if you miss the tackle for God sakes GRAB HIS LEG AND SHOESTRING HIM!!

Leave it to a Tech fan to get 1 win in 8 years then start talking smack. Gave up 42 points in that win too. The next game gave up 38 and got kicked by LSU. So 5 months later they are experts on football and go from blog to blog talking about how sorry UGA is and others and that PJ is the savior. You know UGA fans have been crticized so often for being fair weather or delusional. Since Tech won 1 (That is ONE game in the past 8 years) you would think it was 1990 all over again. So funny. Now watch if PJ loses a few again this season, the same fans on here downing the Dawgs will not be found and the rest will be saying that it’s PJ’s fault or the QB’s fault.
The Dawg’s D will obviously be improved. Not sure how the season will go though. I do know this, come game time in Atlanta in November no way Richt & co lose two in a row to Tech.

I hope my dawgs come here and represent because these okie state fans and even sooner fans think that the pokies are going to put a whoopin on that bulldog defense with their high octane offense. I’ll be at the game, and I’ve been holding down for the dawgs and talking smack but I hope they don’t let me down, because I don’t like crow.
I told them we’ve heard this story before about they having the world greatest offense coming in to Athens back in 07 and got beat down, but they say it going to be different this time.
The thing is being out here and have seen the players and their coaching staff, they are a lot better offensively, probably top five offenses in the nation, if our defense is even half as bad as it was last year I will be looking for the exits by halftime. So hopefully Dowtin’s confidence and attitude is speaking for the whole defense.

Otto, have to agree with you, FG does spend a lot of his keyboard poking yacking about yanking chains. I guess that is his favorite euphemism for letting us all know what a wanker his is. Being a geek and a wanker go hand in hand (or pants,) at the computer–just comes naturally to them.
gdawginkalamazoo, we all shared the frustration. But the only time I think attitude was really a problem was in the first half of the Bama game when everyone stood stunned and silent. Dawgs won the second half, after they came back to life, but obviously not by enough to overcome the first half pasting.
When any team has 19 – 20 starters with season ending injuries it is going to have a devastating effect. To have that happen and still win 10 games playing that schedule should earn a least a little respect. And you are right, it does have to be earned each and every game.
I know they have to work hard and get after it in practice, but if we can get to the season without self destructing with major injuries I think a lot of the preseason prognosticators will be surprised.

I will admit that I settle scores when they need to be settled. You can bet your a$$ that if I’m at that Tech game this year and the Dawgs start to pull away, a trash talking of insane proportions will commence that would make you tear your hair out. I don’t act this way towards Auburn fans or Carolina fans. I actually respect them as individuals.
That is the difference. Plus, I have never heard so much trash talking and chest pumping after one fluke of a shoot-out victory where neither teams defenses showed up that day. We never, ever, EVER acted this way towards Florida in 97′ and 07′. I knew one victory would not change the series and therefore kept my mouth freaking shut!

Dogs will have earned any respect that is needed by the end of the year, maybe by the end of the first game. As far as bumbling bees on this blog, they don’t have one and are too busy trying to keep the student body out of Terrorist Plots, and defended the Tech Concrete Campus against the local gangs.
One other thing that should help our defense will be we can move the ball behind a good line, and keep the d rested a little. Some of you people do not understand fundamentals of football, and if you can keep the ball and scored, the other team has to do the same. With the good D, that we will have, we will be doing a lot of that. You may not have people jumping over tacklers, but you should see a solid running game, and a solid passing game.

Well we finally got a break from the heat here in South Ga, it’s a balmy 97 in Albany now. The humidity is down to about 90%, it’s like spring, if we had a spring down here. You guys leave Vandy alone, his name is Vanderbilt, so he can do whatever he wants. My intentions were to find a blog about football and thought considering our defense is my #1 concern coming in to this year, that maybe some good discussion would be going on here. Instead it’s mostly blather about past scores, who’s got the best looking girls and campuses, who’s a nerd and who’s a bad-a$$, who emplys who, which team is gay or who has tickle piles. Thats fine. I wish this blog was that way Vandy, but it is not. You should borrow some of that hate from me b/c it is Terrorist Tech that ruins these blogs. We don’t go over there typically. We don’t even want to interact with them in any capacity. They, however, are like the nerds that always look up to the cool kids…wanting to participate and be heard. They are not like us…they should just go away and interact amongst themselves. I’m assuming you had students in your high school that went to tech. I had some. And they were all the same.
Payback, however must be given in the stands and on the net. People need to learn their lesson. These tech blow hards have even managed to embarrass other Tech fans.
So if you want to talk football…that’s fine brother. I wish someone would write an article on Dantavious Jackson, the lessor know of our highly recruited running backs. It’s a total team effort: offense, defense, and special teams need to improve for UGA this year. That was the problem with last year’s team. If the defense played well,( like they did against South Carolina, Arizona State, Auburn, and Michigan State) the offense would suck and commit too many penalties. If the offense played well (like they did against LSU, Kentucky, and Tech), the defense couldn’t stop anyone. Usually UGA has one game where they put it all together ( 51-7 vs. Tech in 2002 or 37-15 vs. Auburn in 2006), and when they do they are down right dominant. They didn’t have a single game last year where I felt like they put it all together( offense, defense and special teams). That needs to change this season.

follow the money trail – CMR needs to crack down on discipline indeed. He needs to have them running gassers for each missed block, missed tackle, fumble & dropped pass. The Dawgs needs to focus on mastering the fundementals…blocking, tackling & protecting the football. The downside of recruiting some of these (supposed) 4-5 “bluechippers” is that they have a sense of entitlement & a primadonna attitude.

The heart of the Georgia LB, Dowtin in this case, has never been the problem. The problem is that the daily lesson plan for the defense stinks. Motivating these kids to try harder will only result in further wasted efforts, as they deserve coaches better than the ones they have…it’s like a house that is wired wrong, and we are talking today about giving it more juice to fix the problem. The Georgia defense is wired wrong – especially at linebacker, as neither Jancek or CWM appears to have what it takes to coach a defense in the SEC. Sure, we’ll do well when we can out-athlete the bad guys, but when it comes down to coaching, as it so often does, we are toast. It places an unfail burden on Bobo and the offense, and it is a defensive coaching unit that would not have lasted at any of the other big guys in the SEC.
Shame on CMR for not making the adjustment.

I hope my Dawgs prove me wrong, but I just don’t think we have that “edge” like Bama and Florida do on the Defensive side of the ball. Time to tighten up the ship, and make some of the guys held accountable in ways that could make them either cry or puke. There was a story run last season about the Florida defense doing push-ups everyday during preseason practice…one for every yard that Knowshon got on them in the 2007 game. Is anyone upset about Bama, Florida, and GT dropping 40+ on us each, neither game even on the road? I personally would be ashamed to talk to the media about anything until our D plays a good game against a meaningful opponent..there’s nothing even to talk about except being really pissed off, right?
I hope things are going on behind the scenes that really change attitudes other than “working hard”

pit bull, you hit the nail on the head brother – I knew we had no chance in that game after Spikes drove KM into the ground for about 5 seconds, and no one bothered to push him off. Unwritten rule of sports, you don’t let anyone show up your best player or leader. The worst part of that game for me is that we gave up, flat out. I couldn’t even watch the last 15 minutes. I would have the last 2 mins of the UF game running on video tape at workouts and in the locker room all preseason, incase anyone forgot how humiliating it was. Football is a game of aggression and mental toughness in the SEC…because everyone has those 3 and 4 star athletes.

And yes, I think Tech fans are pushovers. It takes a special type of person to support that team and I am basing my belief due to countless and unimpressive encounters with Tech fans and alumni. The ones from my high school that would go there were always the weird ones that sat by themselves at the table or with the immigrants(who will later join him at tech) and the ones that were very quiet and let people push them around. Until I start seeing otherwise, I will continue to believe that. Family friends will mention once in a while “so and so is going to Tech”, i picture the person from memory, and say to myself(or out loud) “yep, that kid belongs at Tech.” And it is the same type of kid everytime. Just a quick glance at him or her and you immediately assume they are about as fun as malaria.
And don’t act so mad that you are reading things that offend you. It is a Georgia blog. Don’t like it. tough. Go elsewhere. I will only be going to the tech blogs to issue payback, not banter around with people looking for acceptance and respect.

Alec Ogletree definitely committed to the dogs. Its on rivals and scout. Hopefully we’ll land Mack Brown and Jeff Luc with the momentum we have in recruiting now. I personally would wanna get Luc if I had to pic between the two. He is an absolute freak of a beast. I believe, considering we were to get both of them, that Luc will have a much bigger impact on the team than Brown will, especially immediately.
Imagine a the strength of our D up the middle with Luc and company at LBs and Ogletree and company at S. We need some more interior D linemen tho.

DawgDUDE, I dont see either of them coming to UGA, Luc would completely change the face of our defense and to be honest I like Eduardo Clements a little more then Brown,who again, I dont see coming here.
Like a lot of folks here I have some reservations about the coaching on the defensive side of the ball; they just looked terrible at times. Rashad Jones was out of his mind even considering the NFL draft. He needs to learn how to wrap people up and deliver a big hit when needed. I didn’t see much of that from him at any point last year.
I think the play and health of the D-Line will be the barometer of this defense. They play well and everything else should fall into place…by the way to all the Dowtin naysayers just know that he’ll prove to be one of the best LB’s here in quite awhile. He’s fast,very aggressive and can really lay the wood to someone. Watch him.
As it stands now,it seems we’re back to the RB by committee with Carlton Thomas getting used ALOT. He offers the most in terms of options,I dont see Jackson ever really playing much (hope I’m dead-a$$ wrong)due to missing so much time,Samuel hasn’t learned how to run under control and Ealy,to me, is a big question mark. Chapas will get his chance and maybe even Kalvin Daniels will get his too.
I’m excited about what Logan Gray can do….love that kid,I think he can really add a new dimension to the offense.

I wonder if Willie M has done any better preparation this summer. The key to making good players great is the coaching. I wonder if someone could interview Willie and see what he plans to do different this year.
I’ll bet it will be the same schemes with the same players doing the same thing. I truly expect that most of the games will be like a track meet with Willie’s D doing the same thing. I sure wish we’d have made a change with new blood, new attitude, new schemes and a little fire and passion. I guess we’ll see at OS what Willie did this summer. If the dawg fans are honest then admit that many in your fanbase do not like Blacks unless they are toting, shooting, or hitting THE ROCK. I am not stating something that isn’t known. See the difference is at Tech we want our teams to make money, win, and we donate some money to the AA, but we give more money to the INSTITUTION for EDUCATION for the FUTURE and not a chance to play ball on Sundays. It is very entertaining reading all you Georgia fans belittling Tech’s fans’ giddyness over their victory last year. It doesn’t matter that is was their first victory in 8 years. What matters is that it was last year, in your house, with much less talent than what you had on on the field. It was a sign that their new coach knows how to coach the talent he has, and make adjustments.
For those of you so smugly sure that Tech won’t beat you this year, think of the confidence you had before last year’s game against Tech. Then remember the confidence you had at halftime. Then tell us all again how Georgia will surely beat Tech this year.
And, by the way, the Gators will beat Georgia again this year (this is one thing you can count on), on our way to another NC. Three in four years. It is indeed, great to be a Gator.

Feel the hate. As a neutral fan I can’t wait to watch the dawgs and jackets this year. No. 1 I think it will be a great game. No. 2 It looks like the rivalry and the hate are back on. Can’t wait to see these blogs the day after the game.
As a neutral observor I will say that I’ve followed UGA football for awhile since I live in ATL and the dawgs have been good under CMR. Haven’t really followed Tech because Gailey just didn’t have it. But I love option football having grown up a Bama wishbone fan so I’m looking forward to watching Tech this season as well as UGA.
I will say to the dawg fans that as long as Johnson is at Tech this is not going to be a gimme game anymore by any means. Even with lesser talent Tech will be able to compete going forward not just with UGA but with just about anyone they play on a weekly basis. Its just that hard to prepare for an option offense you only see once a year and I don’t read too much into their game with LSU since LSU had a full month to prepare for the option offense.
Plus I think they can only increase the talent level. Even with the leftovers after the big dawg UGA takes their pick of the state crop Tech is still going to get a lot more talent than what they’ve played with lately. I think we will also have a tough time with Tech when we play them in 2013 and 2014. Anyway, looking forward to the season. What is it? 70 days or less?

….I have been talking Dowtin up for a minute and soon you guys will see why.The thing I liked about his HS career is that he went both was a tough RB and physical LB a lot like Samuel.I’m still holding on to the hope that Richard moves over to LB.Those two guys would be an awesome combo.I love the recruits we have picked up lately…size…speed..and athletic ability…this class has Defensive makeover all over it and I salute the staff for aggressively going after headhunters and playmakers…. overall this team will have a totally different look next year.

Maybe our D will get fired up this year. My wish is that we play every game 100% till the end. Kind of like Florida does. No let up, no scoreboard watching. No taking off the third quarter. Sounds like having the D line back is going to make a world of difference for all the LB’s and DB’s. We have a ton of talent coming in that wasn’t there in the spring. OK State is going to be a great game to start the season. How we handle that game will set the pace and show us what we actually have on the D side of the ball.
I hate to say this but those Tech characters have the bragging rights for this year so IMO they can have their say here. For them a 3 point win was a 30 point win in their minds. Like them on here or not, like what they say or don’t, but they got the right this year. I don’t like it but those are the smack talk rules.

There is some great reading on the Smart Football site about the offenses of CPJ and CUM. Carrying out your assignments on D against CPJ will not necessarily beat Tech. CPJ changes blocking assignments from play to play. Stick with your man and CPJ will have someone take you out of the play. CUM talked about the single wing. “How do you stop the run? Just put an extra man in the box. The single wing allows you to stretch the defense and make that extra man cover someone.” “We will not run against a formation with an unblocked man.” I think there are several ways to beat these teams. The easiest, of course is to win the line of scrimage. The tricky part is how to do that. I would rethink my D line against Tech and put my best athletes on the line. People that are agile enough to protect their legs from the cut blocks. Maybe go to a 3-4 and have one DT at nose and two DEs on the outside. I might switch Jones to CB and add Nick Williams at safety. CBs aren’t know for their ability to defeat blocks and tackle people to the ground. I would have Rambo as a monster man. Rambo ran a similar offense as a QB in high school, so let him read the formation and line up where he chooses. It is hard to assign a man to block a person when you don’t know where he is going to line up. Well, that’s enough for today. I do know this, just sitting there in a 4-4 isn’t going to beat either of these teams. Happy Fourth everyone!

8-4 at best, maybe 7-5. CMR will move towards his Miami job with 3 years from now when Florida, Alabama and LSU will continue to dominate this program.

The Dawgs will suprise some teams this year. Look for a blowout win over ok state, a beatdown of lsu, UT, Ga Tech and Auburn. The rest of the games will be easy wins. I think Florida will be overconfident, and UGA can pull the upset. Mark it down–the dawgs will be in a BCS bowl this year! Ga Tech will be in a minor bowl, again.
