With health and spirit, ‘we’ll be much improved on defense’

A year ago, Georgia’s football team was preseason No. 1. A year later, that seems like a long time ago.

So, minus Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno, what is the general feeling about where the Bulldog program is today?

Coach Mark Richt tackled that question this week (and you’re welcome to do so below).

“I think in our building [the feeling] is very good,” Richt said. “We know we have a lot of guys who have been in our program for a while, you know, preparing for their opportunity.

“I think fans really know your starters pretty good and know your signing class pretty good, and they tend to forget about everybody in between that’s working their tail off for their opportunity. I think we as coaches know we’ve got a lot of guys in that category.”

Ask about any of the question-mark positions, and Richt mentions someone he sees as eminently capable of providing the answer.

Defensive end? Richt thinks Rod Battle is capable of a big senior season,  ”and I think [Demarcus] Dobbs was really having a fantastic spring before he got hurt. I think Dobbs has matured a lot. He’s become a good leader for us and got to the point he has really bought into the Georgia way.” (Dobbs broke a bone in his foot during spring practice but is expected to be 100 percent come August.) Richt also reiterated the plan  to use linebacker Darryl Gamble as a pass rusher in nickel situations. “We’re excited about him helping us in that department.”

Tailback? Richt doesn’t know who’ll be the starter, but he spoke highly this week of Caleb King’s progress as a pass protector and in understanding the system. Plus, “he’s an outstanding runner.” Still, the coaches are looking forward to seeing Richard Samuel, Dontavius Jackson and incoming freshman Washaun Ealey compete in preseason practice, too.  “We’re just all going to observe and try to decide who deserves to start and who deserves the most amount of carries,” Richt said. “The big thing for all of them — Washaun especially — is to really get serious about pass protection.”  Richt added: “I do think our running backs and quarterbacks will benefit from a strong, more veteran offensive line than Stafford and Moreno had the last couple of years. So I think that will help whoever plays that running back spot.” Richt has said it doesn’t matter to him whether one back gets the bulk of the carries or whether it’s tailback-by-committee.

The defense in general? “Jeffrey Owens, I know, is going to be huge for us to get back,” Richt said. “He’s an outstanding player, but he’s also a very spirited player — a guy who can rally people around him. And I think Rennie [Curran] has grown into his position now where he has the ultimate respect of his teammates. And you get that strong leadership right up the gut, it helps very much. And Reshad Jones and Bryan Evans.  Right up the heart of our defense, there are a lot of veterans everybody respects and who are outstanding leaders for us. If we stay healthy and play with the type of spirit I know we can, we’ll be much improved on defense.”

Now, changing the subject to a couple of non-football topics:

  – The baseball draft:  The 11 UGA players picked in the MLB draft were the most from any school this year. Florida and Ole Miss had 10 each.  And Georgia’s 11 were by far its most ever. Previously, the most Bulldogs chosen in one draft was six, most recently last year. Of this year’s 11 drafted Dogs,  eight are juniors, meaning they could opt to return for one more season in Athens.  Slugging 1B Rich Poythress has made it clear in a couple of recent conversations that he intends to sign with Seattle and get his pro career started. He points out he’ll be 22 by the end of the summer and figures this is his time.  It’s also expected that closer Dean Weaver (seventh-round pick) and OF Matt Cerione (13th round) will sign pro contracts. But it’ll be interesting to see what the other five juniors, drafted in the 17th through 47th rounds, do –- stay or go? (I’d guess stay, in most cases.) Georgia also had six signees drafted. Here are the lists of drafted Dogs (with overall selection number):

 UGA PLAYERS

 51. Rich Poythress (Seattle Mariners, 2nd round)

  81. Trevor Holder (Washington Nationals, 3rd round)

  202. Dean Weaver (Washington Nationals, 7th round)

  383. Matt Cerione (Seattle Mariners, 13th round)

  506. Jeff Walters (Baltimore Orioles, 17th round)

  771. Michael Demperio (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, 25th round)

  787. Alex McRee (Los Angeles Dodgers, 26th round)

  901. Bryce Massanari (Colorado Rockies, 30th round)

  966. Will Harvil (Arizona Diamondbacks, 32nd round)

1232. Joey Lewis (Kansas City Royals, 41st round)

1405. Justin Earls (Pittsburgh Pirates, 47th round)

  UGA SIGNEES

  404. Zach Dotson (New York Mets, 13th round)

  798. Miles Head (Boston Red Sox, 26th round)

  838. Eric Swegman (Atlanta Braves, 28th round)

  925. Zach Taylor (Pittsburgh Pirates, 31st round)

  958. Jake Montgomery (Atlanta Braves, 32nd round)

1016. Malcolm Clappsaddle (Baltimore Orioles, 34th round)

    – NCAA track and field: The only person in the history of the UGA men’s track and field program to win the NCAA championship in the javelin, Chris Hill, will try to do it again tonight. (Here’s a story on Georgia’s unknown national champ.)  Hill, who won the event last year, needed just one throw to qualify for this year’s finals at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. His opening throw of 234 feet, 4 inches was the second longest of the qualifying round Wednesday night. USC’s Corey White had the longest qualifying throw (254-10). Hill’s longest throw this season is 265-10. Six UGA athletes have won NCAA individual championships during the 2008-09 school year, led by gymnast Courtney Kupets, who won four. Four swimmers and one equestrian rider won NCAA titles in their events. A swimming relay team also won a title. Hill tries to add to the impressive list tonight.

(And with that, I’m off to vacation. Back on June 22.)

HAHAHAHAHA!

I’m sorry, Oledawg, I can’t help myself from laughing at your blind stupidity.

Again… there is NO PLACE in fandom for blind loyalty.

If it were up to guys like you, Ray Goff would still be coach, because hey, he was a great recruiter!

Everything’s sunshine and rainbows with idiots like you.

And Somoan… how do you have no doubt that Martinez will be able to coach his D to dominate?

When has he proven he could do so? He never has.

I love how the idiot blind loyalists sling the “you’re not a REAL” fan to those of us coming armed with FACTS about how terrible Martinez is, and how Richt is WRONG to keep him (cause, you know, Richt isn’t infallible).

I mean, you would have been the same people at FSU who thought Jeff Bowden was doing a good job.

You people are beneath what REAL fans aught to be.

Out of the first 4 games, I think Arkansas will be the hardest game. They open with Mizzou St, then they have a bye week to get ready for the Dawgs.. their first game is pretty much a scrimmage. Not only that, Petrino finally got him a real QB.. Ryan Mallett, whom ran away from Michigan. Should be a very close contest.

Go Dawgs!

Bugkiller, fandom is blind loyalty, after all, fan is a derivation of fanatic, and the one thing all fanatics have in common is blind loyalty. Learn English and then attempt to post, please. Sorry OleDawg, I attempted to reply to Your earlier post, but somehow my post didn’t go through. I was in agreement with you on the state of these blogs. Is there no one at the AJC that can follow a story, are we reduced to posts like those of ST Simons or Bugkiller? I would not be stunned if they were the same person!

You UGa fans are so hilarious. Firstly, the only thing that UGa has is some decent depth on both offense and defense but that’s all they have. Depth alone doesn’t guarantee wins. A J Green is the only bright spot but he alone will not make UGAs offense successful. UGa just doesn’t have the play makers and field Generals to lead its football team to the promise land. Willies D has big flaws and the trend will continue. Uga offense will also continue to struggle in short yardage situations that has always plagued CMR since his arrival at UGa.The one glaring problem with UGa is their strength or weightlifting program . This is why teams like Vandy and South Carolina have been able to play toe to toe with the mutts. THESE are the glaring issues that CMR must address if he wants to win both conference and National championship’s at UGa or it will always remain a fooooools gold football program. Write it down mutt fans, the trends will continue and so will the excuses!

Fools Gold, you don’t know jack about our depth. AJ Green is not the only bright spot we have on O. People tend to forget players we had in the system for 2-3 threes, that they’re waiting for their opportunities. We don’t have major super stars like we did with Moreno and Stafford. Our entire o-line is expecting to be back healthy.. thanked God! And d-line is back healthy as well. As long as our LINEs are healthy, we’ll be okay. Our skill players will definitely benefit from our LINEs… FOOL!

We are not going to fire Willie this time of year anyway. He has some hosses healthy and some depth available. This should be his litmus test. If the D is not outstanding this year, can him like tuna. We may have an overlooked O this year. No one is expecting much so we may run up some healthy numbers. The season is twelve weeks away and all this speculation is water under the bridge, we’ll see what we’re made of then.

To all the Dawg haters…thanks for being here. It shows how much better our program is than your’s. As far as the defense is concerned, we’ll have to see what Willie can do w/o the injury bug excuses. We have as much talent as anyone in the country so the pressure lies squarely on his shoulders this year. The RB situation should be fine. It seems so far that Caleb won’t be the RB we had hoped for after his injury but maybe he’ll surprise us. The good news is that we have a stable full of capable RB’s to get the job done. I’m excited to see what Ealey can do at the college level. Please don’t redshirt him like you Moreno! If he’s as good as we think, he’s only gonna be here a couple of years.

Samona, I thought “go suck an egg” was more of a South Ga expression than south Pacific. Preston, UGA is usually top ten in recruiting, sometimes top five, but I think one of our best recruiting classes was rated thirteen by Rivals. That class didn’t have many star skill posistion players, but had a ton, well maybe two tons, of big ol linemen. We should reap the benefits of that class in the coming year. One should always take recruiting rankings with a grain of salt since skill posistion players can get a higher ranking much easier than linemen. At least, thats my humble opinion.

We will know all the answers by mid October. Then, we will know conclusively IF CWM can coach even a deccent style of SEC Defense. I say he cannot and he must go …….even if it is in October. That would set the tone fo the D players for the rest of the year, maybe.

By October, we will have played not one really great team. OK State will lose maybe 5 games in their league, that is known for playing no defense. Yes, they are athletic but so supposedly is Georgia.

All or the greatest % of our recruit headliners are Offensive players and they are even talking about allowing Brandon Smith, a GREAT ??? D back to play on offense. Duh. If HE IS great ………..let him show us on defense by shutting down the athletic OSU receivers.

Sometimes the bells go off when you least expect. BugKiller, now that you have been outed as a Richt hater that should now be amended. You are a Richt-as-coach-of-UGA hater. You are a Seminole trying to get fans disaffected with Richt so that you might try to get him back to FSU. That would fit your blog name in the ACC. Your earlier postings gave you away when you mentioned practice facilities not yet prioritized, you have kept up with some Dawg facts and that would fit you following Richt plus other subtle tips that just didn’t make sense unless of course, you are a Seminole. And you are correct in calling us idiots for reading any posts by you. It must have been fun. I have a good friend who was one of the “Magnificent Seven” at FSU in the 60s and we have talked thru the years about UGA(where he almost went to play ball),FSU and Bobby Bowden and Mark Richt. My friend has the utmost respect for Richt/UGA and has felt that he was mostly responsible for FSU’s good years. He wishes that Mark and Bobby could get together for a few more years if for nothing else than to see the strongest Christians he has ever admired together again. I have absorbed many stories he tells in his obvious admiration of both men. We talk UGA and FSU football while fishing so that I have garnered some inside skinny on FSU fans. Two camps-those who love and admire Richt not only as a coach, but as a man and there are those who resent his leaving and blame him for the team’s downward skid. Which camp do you fall into, BugKiller? Sounds like you are trying to get him back by driving wedges into our fanbase. That would explain your lack of fan attributes and attempting to generate negative vibes among true UGA fans. You have only changed your epithets from “rose-colored glasses” to “blind loyalty”. None of it works anymore hotshot.

If I’m wrong, then you are the lowest life kid around who is a bug fan pretending to be a Dawg fan. Are you 13? I suspect you are on here illegally. Does anyone at the AJC sniff these sneaks out before getting into FCC regulatory trouble?

Buzz- Before taking a flying leap you might want to read CollegeFootballNews. Their synopsis of the 2009 Dawgs would answer your questions about both lines and what that means to the entire team this coming year. They feel if both lines don’t get hit with the injuries again that folks will see UGA pull some “stunning” upsets. They also feel that the O line is probably the best in the nation. And the D ain’t far behind. Hope you can read.

UGAVII- looks like you have an exciting year ahead so get ready. You might want to practice with clothespins holding your face up because that grin is going to be pasted there all year. What’s not to like? By the way-there are a couple of bloggers on here that you need to place your finest poop in a clear plastic bag and send to them. We will visualize their process of opening it. So, the NCAA is under the gun in our sister state to the south. It seems that FSU is a state institution and therefore subject to Fla’s “sunshine law”. Since the NCAA will NOT give FSU a “hard copy” of it’s investigative report or it’s ruling on Bowden’s appeal the NCAA has made become the Custodian of said documents. Refusing to make these documents public is a violation of Florida’s sunshine laws which could result in warrants being issued for the NCAA top brass. Conviction could result in fines, probation, and even jail time. How about that? How do MY probation taste, NCAA? I am usually opposed to goverment involvement in sports, especially state goverments and in particular Ga and Fla state goverments, those being almost as corrupt as La and Ill. I am no fan of sunshine laws either, our respective legislators have more end runs and fakes that CPJ’s offense. However, this should be fun!

Rose-colored glasses, blind loyalty, sunshine and rainbows… it’s all the same stuff.

It means that no matter what happens, no one associated with the Dawgs can do anything wrong.

This also affects some Braves fans I know so quick to blame ANYONE else BUT Bobby Cox for all of those October meltdowns.

I also like how you make an a$$ out of you (but not me) by assuming that I hate Richt just because I have the sheer audacity to question him. To say that he’s made mistakes. To say, basically, that he’s human.

That he’s putting his friendship with his best friend ahead of what’s best for his team, because he can’t see just how bad Willie Martinez is.

Kind of like Bobby Bowden did with his son, Jeff.

But that’s right. I’m a Seminole, or a Hurricane, or a Bug, or whatever it is you want me to be, because I, unlike YOU, can actually see the forest for the trees.

So much for the youngest team in the ACC with a brand new system racking up 45 points in ole Sanford Stadium last season while the mutts had 2 weeks to prepare. Heck the Georgia Tech coach said that he hadnt even installed 50 percent of his playbook last year. Some of you dawg fans do realize that a trend is happening in the football program since the departure of BVG, but many here are just plain kool aid drinkers. Yes Duh! other programs have systems too. Just ask the Florida’s,Alabama’s and LSU’s The difference is that these programs know what they are doing and what it takes to get the Job done. CMR really has a lot of explaining to do if the D doesnt improve whereas my gut feeling is that it wont be much of a diffrence in big games this upcoming football season . Mark it down! If we can avoid major injuries this fall, there is no reason our defense can’t be improved. Anyone who watched the spring game will tell you that Marcus Washington had a great game and can help our pass rush. Does anyone doubt that Jeff Owens is going to make a big difference on the D-line? The major remaining question is whether we can find some pass rush from our defensive ends? As far as Oklahoma State, I can’t wait to see how they stack up against our defense. If our defense does well, that could augur well for the season.

Oledawg, Bugkiller, the feud between you two brings up a host of good points. A true Dawg fan should be a loyal supporter that stays the course, remain positive, and support the University, team and staff. A bad year (10-2 ?) is certainly not cause for panic.

Let’s hope for better things, like staying healthy, a few breaks, fair officiating, positive discipline, and loud and supportive fans. Things generally even out and take care of themselves. I’m looking for a big year and will be satisfied so long as we are ready to play each week and are competetive.

Oledawg, if you’re in the Mobile area look me up, seems I recall your post last year saying we had some areas in common….

Mobile Dawg-I remember that we both share scientific backgrounds. Location also. The “galootin’” Dawgs once was the subject we seemed to have shared. My alpha female dog, when free of her collar would run and galoot all over the place like some of the players seemed to be doing at that time. Brain farts prevent further common areas at this time. Nice to hear from you and other true Dawg fans.

One subject seems to take a lesser seat as we all blog and that is the pure difficulty of winning any games when playing SEC opponents. We all seem to forget that we are in the most competitive arena in college ball. It doesn’t matter which team and/or division, we are up to our butts in Fighting Roosters, Gators, Tigers, Commodores(with a good coach and revenge on their minds), Wildcats, Wild Hogs, Rebels, Volunteers, Tide that gets redder every year and another Bulldog that goes at it teeth , hair and eyeballs. With the players and coaches arrayed against us, no wonder the NC comes out of here each year (with a few more teams in the Conference wings capable to whip national butt). It’s going to be a chew nails year. I sincerely hope that some UGA fans don’t go on the negative bent the first time Cox doesn’t have a good game, the first time a safety gets beat, the first time an opposing runner gets a td, the first dropped pass, the first drop for a loss….etc. Every game is a different sort of challenge to O, D and special teams. Mobile Dawg all the things you listed have to go right every game for wins to occur and I fervently hope we are through with the naysayers for this next year. They accomplish nothing and only tear down those player’s spirit that put everything into the game. These players are fresh out of high school and entering manhood. Sometimes only the fans can give them a positive experience that makes them continue to play with their best(fans staying for the Bama game last year were appreciated by the team). Let’s pull together and stop the cheap shots that single out people who are giving their best. Let our Coach run the team and the players play the game.

Re: Martinez

Instead of looking at statistics, downward trends, and the like, just go with your gut and ask yourself how many times in the past 4 seasons that Georgia’s defense has looked absolutely helpless against the other team’s offense. Parts of the ‘05 Auburn game, West Va. in the ‘06 Sugar Bowl, Tennessee in ‘06 and ‘07, Alabama, Florida and Tech in ‘08, and several more that don’t come to mind at the moment. In those games, opponents ran up and down the field like they were playing high schoolers rather than 3, 4 and 5 star college athletes.

It’s obvious that there needs to be a change on the defensive side. Don’t need stats to figure that out, although I’m sure they would tell the same story.
