Team-by-team GPA’s

University of Georgia athletes in all men’s and women’s sports had a cumulative grade point average of 3.01 for spring semester, the highest ever by the school’s athletes, the UGA Athletic Association announced Thursday.

Of 508 student-athletes, 258 had GPA’s of 3.0 or higher for the semester.

Thursday’s news release didn’t include a sport-by-sport breakdown, but that information was provided recently to the Athletic Association board of directors. Here, if you’re interested, are those details:

Based on the yellow jacket basketball team’s apr score, I doubt if they could answer the “1 + 1″ or “how many points do you get from a three pointer” questions. They WOULD, however, know what -2 is. It’s the number of scholarships your engineering trade school lost because of their pathetic performance. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

What classes are these scores from? My 5th grader can pass the senior level (grass cutting/golf course maintance), I mean landscape engineer degree classes. I mean really what classes are we comparing? A 3.0 in Pre-Med or Communication or Sports Management or African Studies? I had a 3.53 in International Marketing and Business Law, but my dad had a 2.87 as an EE at Tech and he is smarter than I am and his classes were harder than mine. These GPAs are a joke until you know the field of study. Look at the Georgia Government Educatation System and realize grades are just a number not any measure of KNOWLADGE or SMARTS.

No GPA is not a sole measure of “smarts”. It is the measure of grades somebody made in college though, which was the point of the study and the article. Deal with it.

That’s about as silly as saying that personal income is not a true measure of everybody talents or work ethics. All true, but It is the measure of how much money you.

By your theory, where does your grandfather rank in overall “smartness”. And you really know your Dad’s college GPA? Odd. (I’ll give you credit, it take a lot self-confidence to not worry about everyone rolling thier eyes at the guy that would post his own GPA out here)

Grinch, I didn’t say all Tech players were taking the hardest level classes either. I was saying that they are talking GPA at UGA and you have to see the field of study. KNOWLADGE was to be sarcastic as is SMARTS as in street smarts that can’t be measured in them book learnin classes. Sorry sarcasim in my post was lost on you. UGA does have a player in Pre-Med and Tech has a Player in Aerospace Enginerring and neither are Kickers. So we both do have very smart players but you cannot compare their GPAs against Modern Language majors or Teaching majors. Did I make it clear enough for you now? It was not a slam per say it is just a 4.0 in one field of study does not make you smarter than a 2.6 in a different field of study.

I think both schools are fine institutions with two different cultures. Yes Tech and UGA get some dumb players, but this is a article about excelling in GPA’s. Both schools have had success in sports and academics and I’m happy for the them. You two need to get lives, jobs, and out of your parents house and do something with your lives. Then we don’t have to read your BS on here. Take care, Chris When did you two finish at UGA and Tech?

To Chris Lawson (Marietta, GA)

Gee, I’m flattered you’re so interested in me. Let’s see, Reagan was in office when I graduated from UGA. Great President. Oh yeah, some guy named Herschel played football during that time as well.

Okay, here’s my take:

* Both UGA and GT are fine institutions, hands down.
* Can people be successful graduating from either college? Yes, but it’s the person who will define the level of success, not the name on the sheepskin.
* Is the curriculum a little more rigorous for the normal engineering student over a liberal arts major. Yes.
* Does georgia AND tech get an occasional “academic underachiever”? Yes.

This list could go on and on.

But here’s the rub – a very vocal portion of the yellow jacket nation continue to thump their chests about how they have “tough” academic standards, and their athletes are “smart” compared to those at georgia. In fact, they claim they cannot be competitive on the athletic field because they have true “student-athletes”. When they occasionally win a big game, like once every 8 years, many in their fan base brag about how their “engineers” ran over our jocks. Engineers playing sports at Tech?? BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!! It’s absolutely hilarious how they fail to acknowledge the truth. Even after Reggie Ball, Stephon Marbury, et al, they continue to spread the urban legend about their “tough” academics. So, as long as a number of those kool-aid drinkers are loudly chanting their academic mantra, there will at least be ONE vocal person on the UGA side to call BS on them. It really ticks them off when their hand is called. It also ticks them off when I go BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

By the way, I’m riding down to the gulf for the week and had my laptop handy to entertain me. That being said, you won’t hear much from me for about a week. I plan to thoroughly enjoy my time on the beach.

Too bad I’m not Pi$$onaDAWG or I could fly my private jet down to my private beach. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Reality Check II

This just in, both UGA and GT are both good schools but have totally different academic cores. Also, both cater to athletes who get special treatment, extra tutors, etc. Comparing the two is like apples and oranges since tech is an engineering school and UGA will provide most of the Lawyers, Doctors, Pharmacist, etc. The who point of the article is to provide information on the UGA athletic GPA’s. Any school who shows improvement in Athletic GPA’s should be commended in this environment and UGA has shown improvement in APR and now it looks like the GPA’s are rising. Tech fans who have to bash our UGA academic improvement are jealous haters and have double standards when your BB program is a joke and you lost 2 scholarhsips to boot.

By the way, Chris, do you not find it ironic that many yellow jacket posters make light of the georgia bball teams gpa when their (your?) team was just hit with NCAA sanctions (-2 scholarships) for failing to meet the minimum apr? Now THAT’s delusional!! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Hey AltDeuggie: I’ve read your retort about “i’ll give you credit” and “takes a lot of self-confidence” two or three times now. How about asking your wife to come up with something new for you.

And BTW, anyone who thinks today’s UGA football athletes (or any other SEC OR ACC football team) can post a legitimate 2.8+ GPA, in legitimate college type courses, without having someone taking their tests or otherwise cheating, is delusional. If they’re getting that kind of grade, something ain’t smelling right.

I am a recent grad from UGA, and can attest to players (even some of the star athletes) attending class, taking their own exams, and participating in and contributing to group projects in both business and communication classes. I was in classes and assigned to groups with several marquee football players, as well as a few golfers and tennis players – and most of the time they worked harder than some of the non-athlete groups.

Congrats to all the hard working STUDENT-athletes!

That’s all well and good, GeorgiaGirl, but I’m no more inclined to believe that the team as a whole has a 2.87 average, unless most of their classes are what we used to call “crip” courses. I know many colleges graduate kids that still aren’t proficient with language, reading or math. It’s a disgrace.

I agree with PI$$onADawg…

There is no way these GPAs represent tough majors.

I can tell you that if their schedules consisted of Accounting, Econ, Business Law, and Biology (4 classes = 12 hours), the average GPA would be around a 2.3 or even lower.

Military academy graduate, played division 1-aa football. Student athlete. 99% of those who post never had the experience of a student-athlete, probably 65-75% didn’t even attend a major university for a 4 year degree. It does not matter whether you attend Notre Dame, UGA, tech or any university. They do not hand out degrees. 90% of athletes pursue a degree to begin their careers after college, including marquee football players. Also, if I am a gifted athlete, I don’t care about National Championships as much as personal development. Ask Kobe Bryant, he stated the emptiest night of his life was the night he won his first championship. He achieved his ultimate goal and it did not make him happy. Winning does not make happiness, I can attest to that. Personal development does. Ultimately that is why Orson Charles came to UGA, he was posed a question by Tony Dungy: Q. take football out of the equation, where would you want to attend 4 years of college and what institution would help you grow personally. He said UGA. Not to say UGA is the right place for everyone, but winning will only get you so far and it only satisfies on a surface level. I am sure every major university attracts athletes for different reasons and they all have great academics and most have great intercollegiate programs. As for the rest of us naysayers, our experiences in life shape our opinions and thoughts. Therefor, I can tell very few here have experiences as collegiate athletes or coaches.

Why do we even bother with the charade of the student-athlete? No one really believes or buys it. At least in Europe they are honest and allow 15 year olds to play professionally. Speaking of that, tennis players, golfers, baseball players, basketball players (stupid one year rule David Stern) can turn pro and no one cares. We want to feel good about helping the African American kids, even though they couldn’t get in to any of these schools based on academics. Its a frickin joke and we won’t let them make money. Stupid. I guess that’s why they get someone else to take their SAT or their classes or have techers fix grades. Who cares if they learn anything anyway, they wouldn’t get in based on academics any way.

All the nerd engineers design the buildings. all the UGA CPA’s tell them how stupid the cost estimates are and explain to them how much they need to cut. Then, once the building is built, the UGA lawyers close the deal so that the UGA physicians can go to work treating patients and pay for the building.

The nerds go home and play video games and with themselves while the UGA grads go home to their families.

Florida State (ACC) beat by Arkansas. Virginia (ACC) beat by Ole Miss. LSU won too. All that is left is for Southern Miss who beat Tech, to lose to Florida.

ACC bwwaaah.

UGA easier classes, hey Tech fans, the ISSUE is not that, but that Tech’s “student-ATHLETES” are totally incapable of taking classes at Georgia Tech.

Thus, Georgia Tech’s APR is the worst in the nation.

The real information should be what is the overall GPA of the students at UGA and Tech, and what is the overall GPA of the athletes at UGA and Tech. Let’s compare that. Then compare GPA of other students taking the same classes as the athletes at both institutions.

I graduated from UGA in 80. My brother went to Tech, and he said every degree required at least one year of integral calculus. That was 30 years ago, and I don’t know if it still the same.

We all know that these schools have atheletic-oriented academic programs that are less challenging than the most rigorous curriculum at both institutions. The question is, does UGA provide more “favorable” courses than Tech for its athletes.

People used to point to Duke as an example of a progam with excellent academics that graduated its athletes. Once you look beneath the data, however, you find that the athletes primarily – - though not exclusively – - majored in studies that were not very challenging.

It may very well be that UGA provides greater academic support to its athletes than Tech does. But unless you compare the GPA’s of the atheletes to the student bodies as a whole at each insitution – - as well as to other students taking the classes – - you aren’t doing a real comparison.
