Athens – Aside from its eight SEC games and annual game vs. Georgia Tech, Georgia will play two opponents from BCS leagues this year – the Sept. 5 opener at Oklahoma State and the Sept. 26 home game vs. Arizona State.
That’s one more BCS-league opponent than Georgia typically plans to schedule, athletics director Damon Evans says.
“I’ll say this: We’ve got a very, very tough schedule this coming year,” Evans said. “Typically, what we would like to do [in addition to the SEC and Tech games] with a 12-game schedule is add another school from a BCS conference we can have a home-and-home with, then play maybe a I-AA and a mid-major at home.
“This year, we have doubled up with two BCS institutions [on top of the SEC and Tech games]. You are not going to typically see that. The thought was to add one.”
So the 2010 and 2011 schedules will be more typical than the 2009 schedule.
In 2010, Georgia plays at the Big 12’s Colorado, but the Bulldogs’ other non-conference opponents (aside from Tech) will be from mid-major or lesser leagues: Louisiana-Lafayette and a team yet to be found, both in Sanford Stadium. (If you missed it, here’s the story on the addition of the Ragin’ Cajuns to the schedule.)
In 2011, Georgia hosts the Big East’s Louisville, but the Dogs’ other non-conference opponents (again aside from Tech) will be New Mexico State and Coastal Carolina, both in Sanford Stadium.
Last year’s game at Arizona State and next year’s at Colorado are examples of Evans’ desire to have the Bulldogs travel the country to play BCS opponents.
“The philosophy still is to play a major school from a BCS conference because I think that gives us exposure from the standpoint of getting us out of the Southeast,” Evans said. “I think it’s good from a national recruiting standpoint and from a branding standpoint, and I have this thing that it’s good to step out and represent the conference in games like that.
“But at the same time I’ve got to be ever mindful that the SEC is just brutal.”

Good for UGA that they have scheduled Colorado and Louisville the next two seasons. But, let’s be honest: the 12the games recently added Division I schedules are not being used by member schools for the purpose for which they were touted.
The Twelfth Game, which was originally sold to university presidents as an opportunity for Division I conference schools to enhance their non-conference schedules, is a sham. Over the last several seasons, most Division I schools have chosen to treat their twelfth game as a revenue-enhancing device, nothing more, nothing less. Instead of having one or two “preseason scrimmages” on their schedules, many schools now have three or four.
For schools like Georgia and Florida who have a Division I out-of-conference rival, they now have the freedom to schedule 3 non-conference, non-rival games, but usually schedule two of them against Division I (FBS) “mid-majors” or even Division I-AA (FCS) teams. It’s about the money, and football paying for the rest of the athletic departments’ budgets, pure and simple.

09 schedule is definetly tough, but it is definetly exciting to see us playing OK ST early. I hope we try to do the same thing for 2010. It would be pretty cool to see us play a Big 10 or Pac 10 team to open. How does a home and home with someone like Penn St., OSU, Mich, or Mich St. sound?

My dawgs had the toughest schedule last year, again in 09′, we have the toughest schedule. Because of it my dawgs will lost 2 to 4 games this year. But the season overall will be fun and exciting which is what it is all about. I would rather play this schedule than that cupcake piece of crap the mighty gators have. Has anyone looked at that thing by the way?? The only possible close game I see is LSU and maybe my dawgs. Anyways, no bid deal. Tech lost all 6 games against ugag when chan gomer gailey was coach.
Without chan gomer gailey, Tech has won 4 out of the last 5.

I agree with The Truth…you guys definitely have a major inferiority complex when it comes to UGA.Your blogs are always comical…full of half truths and finger pointing….you would think that you were the best team in the nation and your not even the fifth best team in the ACC. Grow Up….Your efforts would be best spent helping your school to sell tickets to your home games….you have to be embarrassed by the half empty stadium you have for every hoem game. When you have to advertize on the AJC to seel tickets your program has not yet reached National status and will not receive the respect you seek. Another day, same story. Tech fans flapping your mouths when you factor in the pitiful ACC schedule you have awlful games. Normally it takes the UGA game to give your schedule any credibility. The ACC finally wins a BCS game against powerhouse Cinncinnatti and GT finally wins against UGA this decade.
Question: Who are SC State, Middle Tennessee State, Western Carolina, Elon, Wofford, Tulane and Gardner Webb?
Answer: Teams GT have played in 2008 or will play in the next five years.
You GT fans are pathetic talking about someone elses schedule. For fans that are suppose to be from such an intelligent school, you act dumber than dirt. But you are probably GT wannabe’s anyway.

The only reason why Tech played Gardner-Webb and Jacksonville State last year was because Army dropped out of their contract with us. Since we played 2 teams that were division 2, we only received credit for one win towards bowl eligibility. Not much we could’ve done in that situation when teams refuse to play us under contract, so in a way, we only went 8-4 last season. This year we have 3 SEC teams scheduled for OOC. I don’t call any of these cupcakes, especially since 2 of 3 are on the road. On the flip side, I am quite impressed that the dogs are playing big 12 schools, although I bet you didn’t figure Ok State to be as dangerous as they will be in that first game. Better hope that Dez Bryant gets hurt in warmups.

murfdawg, I have been in Kalamazoo, and yes is really does exist, at least for now. Until it packs up and moves to Mexico and China with the rest of the manufacturing jobs. This is Big Ten country and according to these folks they don’t know the ACC from AC/DC and they think the SEC is just an abreviation for secretary. To them I just wear a funny colored Green Bay hat.
Back to your question. Unfortunately this is what happens when we allow Tech to beat us. They get the bragging, smack talk rights for the year and IMO they can use those rights to smack talk anyway they chose as long as it is 1) not personal, 2) vulgar, or 3) involves anybody’s Momma. So as far as keeping them in line I will have to defer until after Thanksgiving, when, hopefully, the stars align and nature is put back on course. I wish the players could see what we have to deal with when they lose a game like that. Of course, we see the true class of some fans when monumental events like this happen. As much as I hate the Gators I never disparaged them or acted like this when we won in 2007.

I agree with you Atlanta Gator and well said. The 12th game has become a matter of financial necessity for most big-time schools. As a LSU fan I would love to play a big opponent regularly on the road. I have been to LSU games at So Cal, Notre Damme, Tex A&M, UNC, Arizona, AZ St, FSU, Indiana and Colorado. LSU does have home & home series from 10-19 with WVa, Washington, NC St and OU. But LSU football is the only profitable sport besides men’s basketball and since the athletic department gets no state funding, it has to carry the other sports. Thus LSU pretty much must have 8 home games most years which makes these series hard to fit in. I don’t see this changing any time soon especially in our current economic state.

On the subject jumbo and Atl Gator, remember this also helps those smaller schools too. They are the real benefactors of the 12th game. Don’t get me wrong, it would be great to play another top25 BCS school but the reality is that it is tough to find that opponent. It is what it is but the smaller schools do get some financial help out of these gigs.

Reason- We only have 3 non-conference games scheduled for 2010 right now. We still need 1 more….Not sure where you are getting your facts. Try reading the article above the blogs. It says, “In 2010, Georgia plays at the Big 12’s Colorado, but the Bulldogs’ other non-conference opponents (aside from Tech) will be from mid-major or lesser leagues: Louisiana-Lafayette and a team yet to be found, both in Sanford Stadium”

Okla plays a cup cake schedule every year and are always rated very high. Our SEC athletic directors should give our teams a break too. I’m not talking the games like Auburn had a few years back when they went undefeated but din’t get a shot at the big one. But gees, this is the second year for Ga. And I’m a BAMA fan first and Ga second.

It’s gonna be great time in Jacksonville this October 31st…talk about scheules all you wish, but this game will tell who the better team is.Oh, and when it gets moved to the Florida Dome, remember who has won the SEC championship there a few times,”Tis a shame thats the only way UGA gets to play there-sure won’t see you in December there, so enjoy it earlier in the year.
But…what about all those wonderful parties along the coast before the game?Hafta come up with a new pre-game ritual, but at least the trip back to Athens after a loss won’t be so long, so there’s your reason for playing it in Atlanta, huh?

Let’s see. 2009 UGA has 11 out of 12 games with a BCS conference school.
2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 there is Colorado, Lousville 2 times, Clemson 2 times, Oregon 2 times, and Tech every year Along with the SEC schedule.
THATS 10 OUT OF 12 GAME with BCS conference schools…..I think thats fine.

Gator T, being in jacksonvile has nothing to do with wins and losses. THE “W” comes from that week off you guys always have. Did yo know all 3 wins UGA has since 1991 all came with EITHER a week off, or lack of a bye on the gators part. That does help. Congrats on the wins, you have a great team. See ya in October.

Good for Damon Evans for getting Georgia’s schedule in line with the 20th century. For decades Georgia refused to play any tough out of conference teams away from Athens. Hence the huge gap between Michigan 1965 & Arizona State 2008. So please don’t whine Barnhart & Tower when the Dawgs finally do what Tennessee, Alabama and LSU have been doing for ages.

I have to post here since there is no blog to discuss the baseball.
Why doesn’t the AJC support its “teams” with positivity and not negativity? Recently when UGA beat GT in baseball at the TED, it was reported that UGA avoided a sweep to Tech. No mention that it won or did a good job. When UGA was leading the nation and the SEC you could barely find anything about them on the AJC. Now that they are losing big-time, its a frequent subject.
Now leading the nation and SEC is a much more uncommon occurrence than us losing, so why is the downturn so newsworthy and the winning was not? And it does not just include UGA, but GT as well. The AJC should try to put a more positive spin on its “teams”.
And I am not being overly sensitive. Any sport other than football and we could win the national and no one would ever know. You have a UGA section, not a UGA Football section. Same for GT and soon for GSU. How about acknowledging the other sports and in a positive way.
Wait until someone drives without a license or goes the wrong way on a street on a moped. Then you will all become prolific journalists again.

One way to improve our SOS is to drop Tech. A slot then becomes available for an opponent that would enhance our points acquired above that provided by a win over a mid-tier ACC team. A UGA win over Tech does little for GA. UGA is “supposed” to win. The result is the ranting of the Tech faithful over 1 win in 8 years. Tech gets the benefit from the game on that count and as a UGA game is one of the few home games that Tech can sell out – thanks to the fact that UGA fans occupy half of the capacity of Grant Field for the game. I vote for a national opponent. Even Notre Dame would be a great option for a late year game.

What are you smoking? Tech doesn’t hinder UGA’s tough OCC schedule. In fact, since that everyone is saying that OSU is overrated, we’ll probably end up being your toughest OCC team. Everyone knows what happened to ASU last year, and I bet the same thing will happen to ASU between the hedges this year. I’m not dissing UGA or anything, and I wasn’t going to say anything on this blog since that it’s a UGA blog, but your comment was just plain stupid. You’re obviously more occupied with dissing Tech than caring about UGA’s tough schedule.

I do not read or post on this blog anymore because of the tiresome, uninteresting posts every single day that add nothing to any rational discussion of anything. This blog absolutely sucks because of a select few posters who really have nothing to do in their life but post about the team they obsess about because their school is completely irrelevant. The sad thing is that UGA fans always respond to them, which is why they continue to post here and why this blog continues to add not one piece appealing discussion. The only thing fascinating about this blog is how the same folks post the same boring posts every single day.

AltamahaDawg: What on earth did I say that made you respond like that? I was commenting that your schedule is tough, but was telling someone that he needs to realize that Tech isn’t in the Chan Gailey era anymore, and may be relevant in football (if last year wasn’t a fluke. We’ll see after this year).
PTC Dawg: Yeah, and I apologize for those GT “fans” that laugh at your schedule, and it’s not like we can say anything anyway (as of last year). This year’s schedule for Tech is more difficult than last year’s was, with 3 SEC opponents and stronger ACC teams (yes, I put strong and ACC in the same sentence). But who knows what this year could turn out to be like. OSU and ASU could be a blow-out for yall, and VT and FSU could be overhyped and overrated. It all matters at the end of the season.
And please, don’t act like UGA fans don’t go on Tech blogs and do the same thing that “m” and the other “Tech fans” do. I see “Huh?” on there frequently.

tech fans…before you throw your pitiful jabs at UGA’s schedule which has been called the toughest in the SEC and country by some publications, take a look at your own schedule this season and upcoming…you’ve added Ole Miss, Alabama, and South Carolina (good job), you’ve also added MTSU for the next THREE years, powerhouses South Carolina State and Elon as well…way to step up. Be realistic, every major conference team has “cupcakes” on the schedule including both UGA and GT. The sad story is the programs like UF and others that still won’t travel for OOC opponents or take on any major OOC opponents. And Jacket fans, 45-42 isn’t a slaughter…most tech grads have decent math scores and a 3 point win for the first time in 8 years is a reason to celebrate, but to gloat like you won the game 51-7 is another. See you November 28th.

The unfortunate truth is Tech graduates do not predomiately find jobs in the Atlanta area. Where as Atlanta is full of graduates of UGA. That said, Tech will have trouble filling their stadium unless they consistently play at a high level in their conference. Coach PJ, insert pajama reference here, has given them a little more swagger in their step. If he can continue to put out a good product on the field, we will see less advertising of ticket packages on the Bulldawg pages.
Oh and one of my best friends did not go to Tech but makes his living as an Engineer. He wears Tech hats and shirts. So there are Tech fans who did not attend as well as there are Dawg fans.
