Athens – Aside from its eight SEC games and annual game vs. Georgia Tech, Georgia will play two opponents from BCS leagues this year – the Sept. 5 opener at Oklahoma State and the Sept. 26 home game vs. Arizona State.
That’s one more BCS-league opponent than Georgia typically plans to schedule, athletics director Damon Evans says.
“I’ll say this: We’ve got a very, very tough schedule this coming year,” Evans said. “Typically, what we would like to do [in addition to the SEC and Tech games] with a 12-game schedule is add another school from a BCS conference we can have a home-and-home with, then play maybe a I-AA and a mid-major at home.
“This year, we have doubled up with two BCS institutions [on top of the SEC and Tech games]. You are not going to typically see that. The thought was to add one.”
So the 2010 and 2011 schedules will be more typical than the 2009 schedule.
In 2010, Georgia plays at the Big 12’s Colorado, but the Bulldogs’ other non-conference opponents (aside from Tech) will be from mid-major or lesser leagues: Louisiana-Lafayette and a team yet to be found, both in Sanford Stadium. (If you missed it, here’s the story on the addition of the Ragin’ Cajuns to the schedule.)
In 2011, Georgia hosts the Big East’s Louisville, but the Dogs’ other non-conference opponents (again aside from Tech) will be New Mexico State and Coastal Carolina, both in Sanford Stadium.
Last year’s game at Arizona State and next year’s at Colorado are examples of Evans’ desire to have the Bulldogs travel the country to play BCS opponents.
“The philosophy still is to play a major school from a BCS conference because I think that gives us exposure from the standpoint of getting us out of the Southeast,” Evans said. “I think it’s good from a national recruiting standpoint and from a branding standpoint, and I have this thing that it’s good to step out and represent the conference in games like that.
“But at the same time I’ve got to be ever mindful that the SEC is just brutal.”

So tired of seeing the 45-42 comment every freakin’ story about us. How about 31-17, 15-12, 14-7, 19-13, 34-17, 51-7, and 31-7 for the previous 7 years? Give it a rest! If you’re so good, act like you’ve been there before.

The only reason why Tech played Gardner-Webb and Jacksonville State last year was because Army dropped out of their contract with us. Since we played 2 teams that were division 2, we only received credit for one win towards bowl eligibility. Not much we could’ve done in that situation when teams refuse to play us under contract, so in a way, we only went 8-4 last season. This year we have 3 SEC teams scheduled for OOC. I don’t call any of these cupcakes, especially since 2 of 3 are on the road. On the flip side, I am quite impressed that the dogs are playing big 12 schools, although I bet you didn’t figure Ok State to be as dangerous as they will be in that first game. Better hope that Dez Bryant gets hurt in warmups.

murfdawg, I have been in Kalamazoo, and yes is really does exist, at least for now. Until it packs up and moves to Mexico and China with the rest of the manufacturing jobs. This is Big Ten country and according to these folks they don’t know the ACC from AC/DC and they think the SEC is just an abreviation for secretary. To them I just wear a funny colored Green Bay hat.
Back to your question. Unfortunately this is what happens when we allow Tech to beat us. They get the bragging, smack talk rights for the year and IMO they can use those rights to smack talk anyway they chose as long as it is 1) not personal, 2) vulgar, or 3) involves anybody’s Momma. So as far as keeping them in line I will have to defer until after Thanksgiving, when, hopefully, the stars align and nature is put back on course. I wish the players could see what we have to deal with when they lose a game like that. Of course, we see the true class of some fans when monumental events like this happen. As much as I hate the Gators I never disparaged them or acted like this when we won in 2007.

I agree with you Atlanta Gator and well said. The 12th game has become a matter of financial necessity for most big-time schools. As a LSU fan I would love to play a big opponent regularly on the road. I have been to LSU games at So Cal, Notre Damme, Tex A&M, UNC, Arizona, AZ St, FSU, Indiana and Colorado. LSU does have home & home series from 10-19 with WVa, Washington, NC St and OU. But LSU football is the only profitable sport besides men’s basketball and since the athletic department gets no state funding, it has to carry the other sports. Thus LSU pretty much must have 8 home games most years which makes these series hard to fit in. I don’t see this changing any time soon especially in our current economic state.

On the subject jumbo and Atl Gator, remember this also helps those smaller schools too. They are the real benefactors of the 12th game. Don’t get me wrong, it would be great to play another top25 BCS school but the reality is that it is tough to find that opponent. It is what it is but the smaller schools do get some financial help out of these gigs.

Couldn’t beat Tech with a rookie coach running a high school offense.

Just remember Dawg fans- you all are the ones who pound your chest about how great you are- Tech is the little red headed step chlid of the state right? Don’t care if ya’ll win 50 in a row–as far as I’m concerned we should be able to compete with big brother going forward–we’re just a “trade school” so I would assume we would play the weaker schedule-we may not have had a “share of the NC” for 18 years-but I think a peice of the pie is better than no pie in how many years? 28 right-that’s ok UGA is the better team year end and year out-that is what makes it so much better when GT is able to pull one out–I don’t think as long as CPJ is at GT it will be 1 out of 8 going forward- I could be wrong-but we will see- good luck Dawg fans- and gdawginkalamazoo I too agree- smack talk is one thing- family life-and all that other stuff just shows no class no matter who you cheer for- This first time that I’ve wrote since Tech beat UGA- THWG-

I’ve stayed away from football for 3-4 months, but man, this article and comments section has been good. I love how the Tech Trolls use a 3 point victory to erase 7 years of history. I’ve never seen a Dawg fan try to “vanish” the Ray Goff years in order to even the score with Florida. [Chris, I'm not including you in the "trolls" dept., I appreciate your post.] I guess one reason would be that most Dawgs recognize that Goff is a d@mn fine Dawg, even though a less-than-stellar coach. OkSt and AzSt are gonna be a blast in September!

7-5 hahahaha. Uga baseball, in spite of playing terrible lately, still beat Tech at Turner field. Of course, they almost always do. What, one loss over last 6 or 7 times. Wait, that’s the same as football. One loss in last 8 years. Please, someone explain how you can gloat after getting blasted by LSU, which I might add lost to UGA. As much respect as I have for Paul Johnson, some of the Tech bloggers that are always on here, have brains that if magnified 40,000 times and placed in the eye of needle, would rattle like a bb in a boxcar!

Okla plays a cup cake schedule every year and are always rated very high. Our SEC athletic directors should give our teams a break too. I’m not talking the games like Auburn had a few years back when they went undefeated but din’t get a shot at the big one. But gees, this is the second year for Ga. And I’m a BAMA fan first and Ga second.

But…what about all those wonderful parties along the coast before the game?Hafta come up with a new pre-game ritual, but at least the trip back to Athens after a loss won’t be so long, so there’s your reason for playing it in Atlanta, huh?

2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 there is Colorado, Lousville 2 times, Clemson 2 times, Oregon 2 times, and Tech every year Along with the SEC schedule.

Gator T, being in jacksonvile has nothing to do with wins and losses. THE “W” comes from that week off you guys always have. Did yo know all 3 wins UGA has since 1991 all came with EITHER a week off, or lack of a bye on the gators part. That does help. Congrats on the wins, you have a great team. See ya in October.

Good for Damon Evans for getting Georgia’s schedule in line with the 20th century. For decades Georgia refused to play any tough out of conference teams away from Athens. Hence the huge gap between Michigan 1965 & Arizona State 2008. So please don’t whine Barnhart & Tower when the Dawgs finally do what Tennessee, Alabama and LSU have been doing for ages.

I have to post here since there is no blog to discuss the baseball.
Why doesn’t the AJC support its “teams” with positivity and not negativity? Recently when UGA beat GT in baseball at the TED, it was reported that UGA avoided a sweep to Tech. No mention that it won or did a good job. When UGA was leading the nation and the SEC you could barely find anything about them on the AJC. Now that they are losing big-time, its a frequent subject.
Now leading the nation and SEC is a much more uncommon occurrence than us losing, so why is the downturn so newsworthy and the winning was not? And it does not just include UGA, but GT as well. The AJC should try to put a more positive spin on its “teams”.
And I am not being overly sensitive. Any sport other than football and we could win the national and no one would ever know. You have a UGA section, not a UGA Football section. Same for GT and soon for GSU. How about acknowledging the other sports and in a positive way.
Wait until someone drives without a license or goes the wrong way on a street on a moped. Then you will all become prolific journalists again.

One way to improve our SOS is to drop Tech. A slot then becomes available for an opponent that would enhance our points acquired above that provided by a win over a mid-tier ACC team. A UGA win over Tech does little for GA. UGA is “supposed” to win. The result is the ranting of the Tech faithful over 1 win in 8 years. Tech gets the benefit from the game on that count and as a UGA game is one of the few home games that Tech can sell out – thanks to the fact that UGA fans occupy half of the capacity of Grant Field for the game. I vote for a national opponent. Even Notre Dame would be a great option for a late year game.
