A busy, mostly good, weekend for the Dogs

    Hope everyone had a great weekend.

    Well, once again, the Georgia baseball team didn’t, getting swept at South Carolina to continue a late-season collapse that has reached 11 losses in 13 games.

    And the men’s tennis team didn’t have a great weekend, either, losing to Texas in the rain-interrupted quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships to end the Bulldogs’ quest of a third consecutive national title.

   But elsewhere, the weekend was good to UGA:

   Men’s basketball: Tennessee State’s top scorer announced plans to transfer to Georgia. Guard Gerald Robinson Jr., who averaged 17.8 points per game as a sophomore last season and 15.2 as a freshman, will have to sit out the 2009-10 season under NCAA transfer rules. The 6-foot-1 Robinson, from Nashville, then will have two years of eligibility remaining. ”I sat down and evaluated everything, put together a checklist, and Georgia offered all the things I was looking for,” Robinson told The Tennessean. “. . . I’m going into a situation with a new staff where I can be one of their guys.”  Robinson was second-team all-Ohio Valley Conference this past season.

   Women’s basketball: Georgia point guard Ashley Houts was chosen as a finalist for the U.S. national team that will play in this summer’s World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia. Houts survived the cut from 27 players to 14 in three-day tryouts in Colorado Springs. The 14 will train in Colorado June 18-25, after which two more players will be cut.  The women’s basketball portion of the  World University Games will be held July 1-11.  Houts played a UGA-record 37.7 minutes per game this past season, leading the Lady Bulldogs in scoring (12 points per game), assists (4.7 per game), steals (2.2) and free throw percentage (.779). She is a rising senior from Trenton, Ga.

  Women’s tennis: Despite the men’s team’s elimination, Georgia still has a shot at an NCAA title in tennis this year. The UGA women’s team came back from a 3-1 deficit to beat South Carolina 4-3 in College Station, Texas, on Sunday to advance to Monday’s national semifinals vs. Duke. Georgia (27-2) is the tournament’s No. 2 seed and Duke (27-3) the No. 3 seed.

 Softball: Georgia beat North Carolina 4-2 on a two-run, walk-off home run by sophomore Megan Wiggins in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday to win the Chapel Hill Regional and advance to the NCAA Super Regional for the third time in program history. No. 6 seed Georgia (42-10) will play No. 11 Ohio State in a best-of-three series on Thursday and Friday in Athens for a berth in the College World Series.

   Track and field: At the SEC Championships, Georgia junior Chris Hill broke the meet record to win the men’s javelin with a mark of 261 feet, 4 inches. That was Georgia’s only individual championship of the meet. Hill is the defending NCAA javelin champion. . . .  Defensive tackle/shot putter Geno Atkins, the only athlete currently on two Georgia sports teams, equaled his personal best in the shot (56 feet 11 1/2 inches) to finish seventh. . . . In the team competition, Georgia’s men tied for fifth and Georgia’s women finished ninth. Finishing first were Arkansas’ men and Florida’s women.

   Golf: Georgia’s No. 1-ranked men’s team finished second at the Southeast Regional to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The Bulldogs were 21 under par for the last 36 holes of the Regional, and all five Dogs finished the 54-hole tournament under par. . . . Georgia’s women’s team, which qualified for the NCAA Championships the previous weekend, will begin national championship competition Tuesday at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.
