Larry Munson, Hall of Famer

  “Run, Lindsay, run!”

“Oh, look at the sugar falling out of the sky!”

“We just stepped on their face with a hobnail boot and broke their nose! We just crushed their face!”

Larry Munson’s soundtrack comes to mind because on Monday night he’ll be inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame.

Munson won’t travel to Salisbury, N.C., for the ceremony, but he has videotaped an acceptance message to be played in his absence.

Wes Durham, the Georgia Tech and Falcons radio play-by-play man, and Tony Barnhart, ajc.com’s “Mr. College Football,” will be on hand to accept the award for Munson.

“It’s an honor that is obviously richly deserved,” Durham said yesterday.  “Larry is an icon in this business.

“He is one of a handful of guys in this country who brought the passion and pageantry of college football to life on the radio. His style is one that can’t be replicated.”

Barnhart, by the way, is working on a book with Munson, scheduled for publication later this year. Working title is “From Herschel to a Hobnail Boot: The Life and Times of Larry Munson.”

“It’s told in Larry’s voice, which is a fun voice to write in,” Tony said.

Munson, who called the play-by-play of UGA football games on radio from 1966 until his retirement for health reasons last fall, was elected to the Hall of Fame by a nationwide vote of National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association members. He’ll join about 80 sports media stars in the Hall of Fame, which began in 1962 with the induction of legendary sportswriter Grantland Rice.

Sportscasters in the Hall of Fame include Vin Scully, Keith Jackson, Harry Caray, Howard Cosell, Jim McKay, Ernie Harwell, Al Michaels, Chick Hearns, Mel Allen and Lindsey Nelson. Sportswriters in the Hall include Furman Bisher, Frank Deford, Red Smith, Jim Murray, Edwin Pope, Dan Jenkins and Shirley Povich.

It’s great company that Munson is joining.

And great company that is joining them.

Around Bulldog Nation: Georgia’s Courtney Kupets won the Honda Sports Award as the nation’s top collegiate gymnast. She also won the award in 2007. . . . Cornerback Ramarcus Brown signed with the San Diego Chargers, the team said yesterday. He became the sixth member of the 2008 Bulldogs to sign with an NFL team as an undrafted free agent. Add that to the six drafted Dogs. . . . Maybe it’s just as well that Georgia’s baseball team has no more games this season against Jacksonville State. The Bulldogs went 0-2 against Jax State, losing on the road last week and at home last night. Georgia gave up nine runs in the ninth inning last night to lose 16-8.

It is a testimony to the man that opposing teams fans respect and admire him. God bless you Larry.

“Run Lindsay Run” is probably Larry’s most misquoted lines. He never said it. He said “Run Lindsay!” Go back and listen to the call. Great memory though!

Wes is just doing his part for the Georgia program until they can work out a deal to hand him the radio job.

“We jumped on it with our heads! We jumped on it with our feet!”

“Imagine up at St. Simmons and Jekyll Island and all those places where those Dawg people have those condos for 4 days? Man, there’s gonna be some property destroyed tonight!”

“And the stadium trembles and cracks and shudders a little bit more.”

“The Georgia fans over in that corner are trying to stand but they’re upside down.”

“Someone just threw something at me.”

“Carswell intercepted! Carswell just saved our fanny!”

“Tech just ripped our hearts out. Blood pouring into the streets!”

“LSU only brought half their band, but they brought the LOUD half.”

“Hap Hines to try to win this thing in overtime. I’m gonna miss my flight. Delta hold the plane!”

It’s GREAT to see all you Georgia people living in the past. Some 30 years ago in the late 70’s. Welcome to the PRESENT, 45-42!

I agree with BUZZ. You Georgia people need to try to stay in the present, not the past (1980’s) or future (another top 5 recruiting class). LOL
