Reflecting on UGA’s draft . . .

Very interesting NFL draft for the Bulldogs.

All three UGA players who turned pro early obviously knew what they were doing, at least in terms of their draft stock.

Matthew Stafford was correct that there was nothing he could do in a senior season to improve his draft position. Can’t improve on the No. 1 pick, of course. And his record contract — $41.7 million guaranteed – beat the NFL push toward new rules to  shift money from rookies to veterans.

Knowshon Moreno, you might recall, entered the draft without even asking the NFL advisory council for an assessment of his draft potential. He went higher (No. 12 to Denver) than almost any “expert” had forecast. The consensus had been that he’d go in the 16-21 range.

Asher Allen surprised a lot of folks when he, like Stafford and Moreno, opted to leave school early for the draft. But he became a solid third-round pick, only slightly lower than his most optimistic hope.

“We were kind of hoping Asher would sneak into the late second round,” Allen’s agent, Pat Dye Jr., said Sunday. “We thought his window was late second to third, so he went in his window. And he’s going to a really good young football team [Minnesota].”

Stafford, of course, isn’t going to a good football team, and the question now is how the 0-16 Lions handle his development.  How long before he plays? The Lions brass said what you’d expect over the weekend – that it’s their job to develop him and that he’ll play as soon as he’s ready, whenever that is.

Aside from the underclassmen, three other Georgia players were drafted.

Mohamed Massaquoi went to Cleveland in the middle of the second round, about as expected.

Corvey Irvin went to Carolina late in the third round, probably higher than most people expected; that completed a whirlwind year in which Irvin became a UGA starter because of Jeff Owens’ knee injury, played extremely well and turned himself into a fast-rising NFL prospect.

Dye, who also represents Irvin, said Irvin continued to improve his draft stock in recent months by doing well at the NFL Combine, at Georgia’s Pro Day and in interviews with teams.

“People started considering he really only played one season of [major] college football,” Dye said.  Irvin transferred to Georgia after playing two years at Georgia Military College, and he was a UGA backup in 2007 before Owens’ injury thrust him into the starting lineup as a senior last fall.

The final Georgia draft pick was defensive end Jarius Wynn in the sixth round to Green Bay. Kind of interesting that, given  all the (justified) criticism of Georgia’s D-ends last season, one of them got drafted.

Your thoughts on Georgia’s draft and what you expect from the players in the pros?

Allright all you dumbasses that are spewing that garbage about why UGA had so many guys drafted and didn’t accomplish more in Athens. You might want to pay a little more attention to the rest of the team. The O-line was patched together last year and very young the year before. You could have the best offensive weapons in the country but if your O-line isn’t there, you’re screwed. Go back to your bug page you losers! There’s another 7+ straight starting this year.

I think it’s great that UGA had a number of players going to the draft. I was really surprised that Asher Allen was drafted has as high as he was. Perhaps someone should tell him that the ball is placed at the spot of the foul in the NFL. It’s always a good recruiting tool to have a number of players going to the draft. Hopefully, by watching our players enter the draft, kids will see UGA as a great opportunity to take them to the next level. Obviously, SEC programs all churn out pro athletes, but it’s still great marketing for us to see Moreno and Stafford both get drafted so high. Go Dawgs. Keep up the good work.

Shane, agree with both your comments on Stafford and Moreno. I also think Moreno will be great in Denver, but not because the past UGA running backs have.

Keep in mind that the only thing still in place from that time for the Broncos is the owner. There is a new head coach, new personnel people, new assistant coaches, completely different style of offense coming to the Broncos than the one cut zone blocking scheme where EVERYONE who put on a Broncos jersey at RB had good stats. That regime is completely gone.

I’d say having 3 players on offense in the top 50 NFL draft is worth 42 points on anybody!!!

Mr. sugarhilldawg, i figured you were the type that would read these blogs out loud…. Vandy, why contribute to the 100? All of these guys are going to have to go out there and prove themselves at the next level. All the fortune tellers out there are as reliable as the bcs. Time will tell. They’ve earned their shot and it is ONLY right that we’d wish them the best. GO TECH!!!

STOP REFERRING TO ME AS A DUDE. HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO SAY IT?!

Pretty funny that these ‘top draft choices’ couldn’t beat Tech. If we can whip the dawgies with their ‘top draft choices’ wait until this fall when their 4th choice QB/RB take the field in Atlanta.

Ramble on, the last time I checked those guys were on the team in 06 and 07. Stafford had over 400 yards passing in the loss this year so what are you talking about? Staff 2-1 vs. Tech, Knowshon 2-1 ,Momass 3-1.

Umm…Those ‘top draft choices’ did beat Tech…Massaquoi 3 times, Stafford and Allen twice, and all the rest beat Tech once. You Techies seem to have an awful short memory…

The players may have known what they were doing, but it’s obvious the clown act, “Willie & Bozo”, don’t have a clue,…..and, at the risk of severe censure, dare I say Richt as well?
