Athens — At Georgia football practices, Matthew Stafford is gone but not forgotten.
As the Bulldogs practiced in blustery conditions on Monday, “we were, like, ‘this is how Stafford’s going to have it every day,’” coach Mark Richt said.
You know, Detroit weather.
”I guess Detroit plays inside,” Richt clarified. “Oh, he might not go to Detroit. But if he went to Detroit. . . .”
The Lions, of course, have the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft.
* * *
Will be real interesting to watch Carlton Thomas, the 5-foot-7, 170-pound tailback, on G-Day.
He, by all accounts, has impressed teammates and coaches this spring.
“He’s a little bit like [former Bulldog] Tyson Browning,” Richt said, “because he’s not a real big guy and he can make people miss. He runs with more power than Tyson did. He’s not as fast as Tyson was, but the agility and change of direction [are] very similar. That’s probably the closest comparison to anybody we’ve had here or even at Florida State. He’s coming right along. He’s doing a nice job. Going to be a pretty good player.”
* * *
The Bulldogs didn’t practice on Tuesday. They’ll be back at it today.
Meanwhile, thought you might like to have the details on G-Day, which is Saturday in Sanford Stadium:
– Festivities kick off at 11:15 a.m., with about 90 football lettermen from six decades playing flag football between the hedges. Foots Clemens, a linebacker on the 1952-54 teams, is the oldest former player scheduled to participate. About a dozen former all-SEC players will take part. “Might be fun,” Richt said of the lettermen’s game. “Might be comical, I don’t know.”
– The main event, Georgia’s spring intra-squad game, follows at 1:05 p.m. Richt said the two squads will play four quarters of eight or 10 minutes each. “We’ll run it just like a normal game,” he said, although there won’t be kickoffs. The ball will simply be placed somewhere between the 20 and 30 yard lines.
– The game will be nationally televised for the first time (on ESPN). Brad Nessler will call play-by-play, with Kirk Herbstreit as analyst and Wendi Nix as sideline reporter.
– Admission is free, down from $5 last spring. The free admission is aimed at drawing a crowd for the ESPN cameras. Stadium gates will open at 10:30 a.m. Gates to be used for the public will be the main gate under the Sanford Drive bridge, plus gates 2, 4, 6, 7 and 9.
– In lieu of an admission charge, Georgia encourages fans to bring food items to donate to the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia. Richt asked reporters to get the word out about preferred items — “even,” he said, “if it’s just on a blog or something.” So here goes: He suggested donations of canned vegetables and fruits, canned tuna and chicken, canned soups and chili, pasta and sauce, peanut butter, cereal, rice and dried beans. He cautioned to check expiration dates to make sure all donations will be useable.

Lots of interesting comments were posted here yesterday about what you’ll be looking for from the Bulldogs on G-Day. Thanks. Feel free to pick up where you left off. . . .

Nice that the mutts are giving to a food drive. Good job on that one.
Isn’t Tyson Browning like a seventh year senior by now? That guy’s been playing forever. I can’t believe he’s not graduated yet. But I guess graduation isn’t always a goal for mutts.

Going to be looking at two things..TK and the defensive ends. Those are keys to our season. I am more than confident with White, Green, and Moore as the starting receiving corp, but with Durham hurt now, what does the second team look like? Will Wooten, Brown and Charles be able to crack the two deep? At DE, Houston sounds like he is coming on, but will he have help. If he does…look out, if not…long days in the secondary this year. Again.

Enough already with the Stafford love fest. Who cares where the guy plays or where he gets drafted. He was the most overrated Q.B. to ever play at UGA. He couldn’t carry Shockley’s jock strap. If you want to keep up with a great UGA q.b., try Shock. Stafford only cared about Stafford, and he will be a major bust in the NFL.Unlike Shock, who loved UGA enough to ride the pines for three years while he waited his turn, when he could have transfered and been a starter for 3 years somewhere else. Would have loved to see how long your overhyped baby from Texas would have stayed and rode the beach. Hope he gets his money, and good bye to the loser that only threw one interception per game that was taken to the house for a t.d. He threw more interceptions that were taken for t.d.’s by opposing teams defenses than any UGA q.b. ever. Can u guys please focus on who loves UGA and who wants to play for UGA, and not some overrated former Q.B. If not go in your bedroom and wackoff while you drool over Stafford’s picture hanging over your bed.

Here’s a gal whose Daddy played at Georgia but chose to be a Gator – that’s bad enough – but for her to wear that damn Florida blue outfit while doing her thing in the Georgia dugout during the College World Series (all the while with a smug look on her face as our Bulldogs lost to some other Bulldogs) spoke volumes.

Spring games are often erroneously dismissed as a meaningless indicator of success in the fall. I disagree. If you look closely enough and you’re being objective you will see signs of how things will go in the fall. Case in point: Last year’s spring game. The #1 O marched right down the field on the # 1 D on the opening drive without even breaking a sweat. Everyone was like, “the offense is going to be awesome”, with no mention of the other side of the ball. The defense looked absolutely clueless on that drive. The writing was on the wall for all the world to see. Do not dismiss what happens in these spring games as an abberation or mere happenstance. You do so at your own peril.

Gnats can’t help trolling the UGA blogs. Their team was exposed in the Dome by a middle-of-the conference SEC team, and now they are running around, holding onto the only bright spot for their program over the past 8 seasons, beating the relevant team in Georgia by 3 points. They should be ignored until we spank them and put them back in their place.

Stafford had a poor defense, a patchwork o-line, no tight end and a brutal schedule last season and still managed to pull 10 wins out of it. The kid was good not god.
The year before he won 11 and finished 2nd in the country, again with a patchwork line, average wr’s a defense that did not heat up until the 2nd half.
His freshmen year he won 9 and saved what easily could have become a 500 year.
Give the guy his credit, he did more for UGA the last three years than anyone.

You make us look like every bit of the redneck side walk didn’t go to college fan base that the Techies make us out to be. How on god’s green earth can you criticize a guy that throws for 3,500 yards, 25 touchdowns, and completed 61% of his passes? Do you ingrates have any idea how lucky we were to have this guy? Didn’t win the big games? Gee golly, don’t you think the fact that our defense gave up 40+ points in all of those contests might have something to do with that? Good grief. What, pray tell, was Stafford supposed to do about a defense that couldn’t tackle an 80 year old granny in a wheelchair? Oh, I know. He should have shown “leadership” and developed an “it” factor so that our defense could tackle better and not commit so many penalties. Whatever you say MORONS.

Atlanta Jackets,
I have a subscription to both sites. I can guarantee you, and to anyone else out there, no one that writes for them would have ever said that Stephen Hill is better at anything than AJ Green. Stephen Hill is a fine player and may become domething great. But, he wasn’t even in the top 100 on either site. AJ Green was a top ten recruit on both sites. I understand your enthusiasm about keeping a recruit that UGA came after, albeit late. I know that y’all don’t get that feeling very often. But, don’t get it twisted. Stephen Hill ain’t half the man of AJ Green, when it comes to WR that is.

I don’t care how many games he won, although it was a lot, or what Stafford’s stats were, which were good, he never did anything to deserve that kind of critisism. He represented the university well, and did everything he was asked to do. You don’t bash a kids character because he happen to be here at a time when the rest of the team wasn’t up to speed. Or even if he wasnt the football player that you wanted him to be, as if that was even possible. Spend your day lurking for UGA blogs so you can post and feel manly hiding behind a computer. Atlanta jacket and RAMBLER never played a down of football or did anything athletic in their entire life.
You can tell the dominant program by the blog posts from the opposition.

Georgia’s O line will take care of the running game. Huge holes to drive trains through. KM was great at UGA, but the O-line played well and helped a highly touted RB. Now the O-line will take care of an help propel talented RB to another level. However, the Offense will be more of a ball control passing attack. Cox will be a better QB than King, Samuel, Thomas or Ealy will be RB’s. Receiving Corp is to talented not to be used more and with an O line to protect an efficient QB the ball will be thrown down the field on 5 to 15 yard routes frequently.

I’m sorry guys, I’m really just bitter that NATS, once again, is looking up at UGA in the baseball polls, much like they do in most every sport. Well, I’m also bitter about my virginity, but that’s to be expected.
we had a great gameplan but failed to execute

Well, 1970dawg, we all can see what happens to those who are critical of the amazing matthew stafford.
it says alot that people are more proud of having players drafted #1 than winning championships….and I’m talking NATIONAL, not SEC.
Whoever said that he didn’t speak for the bulldog nation is crazy. We are all about style points these days, aren’t we??
Matthew stafford or National championship???…..hmm….alex, I’ll take Matthew stafford and let me prove that I’m an idiot for 200.
But that’s ok….I’m sure the gators will accept our taunts of “we dont care that you wear our a$$es out every year…we had the first pick in the draft – nanny nanny boo boo.”
You people need to join the tech nerds who have nothing better to do than to post comments on the georgia blogs.
Joe Cox may turn out to be the best of them all…….He is talking to Shock and I wonder if he talks to his former HS teammate….who got belittled by his school for years for being not a good quarterback.
Chris Leak….he didn’t amount to much, did he….

i also have to agree with 1970 dawg…best of luck to stafford but he didn’t do a damn thang for the dawgs…he and u-know-who stick around for another year with that offensive line, aj, and (possibly) a fired up defense….woooo boy! on the flipside its hard when the nfl will throw $35 mil at you for what you might be able to do…..

Good thing you asked how to delete a comment Atlanta Jacket. If you knew anything you wouldn’t make a stupid comment about Tyson B still being on the team.

All this talk about Stafford. Why dont we let the past stay where it is and look at who is the man now. Cox is going to be the best QB that UGA has had sence GREEN.

Hey Atlanta Jackets DA aren’t you unemployeed like the rest of the engineers in the state? What a dumb question. Your on a blog about UGA so you must be sitting at home pondering why you spent all those years in school for nothing. But if you are emplyed see what you can do about road construction happening on 75 South during the weekend. It sucks bad.
