Counting down to G-Day …

Athens – Georgia’s spring football practice is down to its final days – a Wednesday practice, a Friday practice, then the G-Day game on Saturday.  That’s it.

There was ominous word Monday that rising senior split end Kris Durham has a shoulder injury that might – repeat: might – require surgery. Durham is listed No. 1 on the depth chart at split end,  and with the Dogs already facing the considerable task of replacing NFL-bound Mohamed Massaquoi, they can hardly afford a major injury at the position.

Durham didn’t seem to know – or want to say – what to make of his injury at this point.  He said he’s waiting to find out the diagnosis and will talk to coaches and others to evaluate the information and decide what to do. Mark Richt said the shoulder might be handled with rehab or might require surgery – “I don’t know for certain what’s going to happen.”

One thing for certain: You won’t see Durham on the field in the G-Day game.

You will see A.J. Green, and in more places than last year.

“I’m learning different sides. I’m sometimes on the short side. I’m in the slot sometimes,” the SEC’s leading receiver of 2008 said Monday. “I’m trying to extend my game to help me out and help my team.”

You’ll also probably get a glimpse  of Fred Munzenmaier, the backup fullback the past two seasons, carrying the ball at tailback.  He’s intrigued the coaches in recent practices at the position, and Richt expects him to get some tailback carries on G-Day.

Don’t look for any Knowshon-type vaults from Munzenmaier, of course. He shied away from the mention Monday that he’s playing – at least briefly – Moreno’s old position.  “I’ve attempted to dive before,” Munzenmaier said, laughing, “but it’s only when people are rolling on the ground. I don’t have ups, as they would say.”

With just two spring practices and the G-Day game to go, it’s obvious many questions will linger into summer. Injuries at tailback and defensive end have made it impossible to sort out those two very fluid positions. And  the receiving corps (aside from A.J.) remains in flux,  pending word on Durham’s shoulder and the summer arrival of highly hyped signee Marlon Brown.  Meanwhile, it’ll be interesting on G-Day to watch receivers Michael Moore (29 catches last year, six of them in the bowl) and Tavarres King (impressive this spring, according to teammates).

So . . . what will you be most interested to glean from G-Day?

So much for not engaging the pesky little gnats…I’m sorry, but enough is enough.

Jethro, using your “logic” – UGA threw a pick-6 and fumbled a kickoff on our own 23 yard line, resulting in a quick 6, and you won by 3. So, by that we are to take that a team with a vaunted, loaded with NFL talent defense allowed 42 points to a “poor” (Tech wording) offense and was able to score 45 against a patchwork defense that ranked near the bottom of the SEC? Good job, GT. You finally won a game against UGA and you have been living it for 6 months, now. Get over it, already!

The only difference in the team (LSU) we beat by 14 and that you lost to by 35 was the (freshman) QB and the location of where the games were played. We played them at their house and won. They played you at “your house” and cleaned your clock. That in and of itself shows how well your beloved gnats would fair in SEC play. Don’t count the win against Miss. St., they have been bottom-feeders in the SEC West for a while (no offense, MSU fans). If GT had to go against SEC teams week in and week out, they’d be a .500 team, at best.

I, for one cannot wait for us to fill up half of your pitiful little stadium with our fans and watch Chick-fil-a Bowl, Part II this year!

We now return you to your regular programming, already in progress….

I would like to see the defensive ends play better but I am worried about our depth. The bowl game made me feel better about our defense, however I would like to see Richt look at the possibility of a new defensive coordinator. There’s a reason no one wanted to hire Martinez away like Garner and Searles. I really wish we could have gotten Chavis from Tennessee.

I can’t believe these pencil pushing virgins are getting off so hard after beating such a poorly coached and injury-riddled defense by only three points at the end of an already disappointing season. 10-3 is disappointing for us. 9-4 is your best record in the past decade.

Jethro Tull, you play the skin flute. You’re a skin floutist. The last time I was in your terrible miniscule stadium we made one of your fellow towel headed tech geeks cry without touching him. My prediction: I’ll do it again this year. You want to call someone a chump clown, look me up. I live in Va Highlands in Atlanta and that is my real name.

Munzenmaeir running from tailback? Interesting. I’m thinking Earl Campbell in the Red Zone. It only has to work once, and opponents will need to prepare for it every week. If he can show that he can run from tailback, putting him there will force linebackers and safeties to pull up. Marlon Brown’s a speedster, right?

I would like to see Logan play well, but I feel that Murray is stealing his thunder. I want to see Cox play under control and manage the game. I want to see Thomas break a long one, but it would be good for the team if the D took control of the game. This early and with a new QB, the D should win.

I want Durham to be healthy. I hope he does not need surgery but also hope he doesn’t have a nagging injury the whole year. Hope he didn’t get it trying to increase his bench press personal record!

MoDawg, sorry you don’t get it. I can’t help you.

Ole’, you stay classy my friend. You sure are a big man from behind that keyboard.

You sound like the kind of mutt fan who walks up to opposing team’s fans and spits on their wives or pi$$es on them from atop Sanford stadium. Yes, you classy clowns have done that many times and you probably think it’s funny, don’t you?

LSU,

Your comment to Dawggirl32 was uncalled for. Show some respect and class. Then again, you are an LSU fan, which probably means youre a freakin backwoods cajun redneck.

break the record

What’s our expected attendance? I want to beat the bammers who had something like 75,000 last year and hold the record for a spring game attendance with 92,000. Nebraska also had 78,000 last year. Can we show up and break the record or at least have a respectable showing for the sake of prestige and to help keep recruiting strong. Florida’s spring game last year was televised on ESPN and the Bammers are having ESPN televise their spring game this month. Does anybody know if ESPN is going to be there for G-day? I hate to think of these other programs making us look small time.

I would like to Taveras King and Israel Troup step up and perform. With Green, Wilson, Durham(hopefully), Marlon Brown and maybe a couple of TE step up, the passing game could be awesome this year with good protection from the line. It seems to me that Richt traditionally plays a game plan to wear down the opponents and end the game running strongly and controlling the clock on the ground. This year could be vastly different. This could be the year we see tradition of wearing a team down go out the window and see alot of scoring from the offense.

I don’t think we will know what we have on defense until September. Too few defensive ends to really know what the D line will be like. We will find out how good our db’s are. Take note, S.C. and OK St. will watch to see how good our db’s are. We will have to get pressure on the Qb’s to have an effective defense.

Somoan good point on Kiante hope he has a great day and season. Hopefully, he can have a full season at one position on the same side of the ball.

[...] Outside of the bad news about the injury to Kris Durham, a couple of things in Tucker’s first G-Day post stood out. You will see A.J. Green, and in more places than last [...]

This blog has been one utterly disappointing read. So much derogatory speech and ill-willed language that I am nauseous. Marlon Brown will be a starter in 2009 if my assessment of his talent is as clear as I think it is. You should all watch his highlight films on youtube. He also led his basketball team to a TN state title last year with 35 points in the final game while winning an MVP along the way. With dual speedsters and leapers on the opposite side of each other, Few, if any, teams will have a chance to match 2 corners against Brown and Green. We should be better in almost every facet of the game this year. Our o-line should be good enough to allow our backs to have big years and give cox time to throw it up to my two favorite colors. DL is going to be much better, and for the love of God, I hope Reshad Jones can anchor that secondary.
