Counting down to G-Day …

Athens – Georgia’s spring football practice is down to its final days – a Wednesday practice, a Friday practice, then the G-Day game on Saturday.  That’s it.

There was ominous word Monday that rising senior split end Kris Durham has a shoulder injury that might – repeat: might – require surgery. Durham is listed No. 1 on the depth chart at split end,  and with the Dogs already facing the considerable task of replacing NFL-bound Mohamed Massaquoi, they can hardly afford a major injury at the position.

Durham didn’t seem to know – or want to say – what to make of his injury at this point.  He said he’s waiting to find out the diagnosis and will talk to coaches and others to evaluate the information and decide what to do. Mark Richt said the shoulder might be handled with rehab or might require surgery – “I don’t know for certain what’s going to happen.”

One thing for certain: You won’t see Durham on the field in the G-Day game.

You will see A.J. Green, and in more places than last year.

“I’m learning different sides. I’m sometimes on the short side. I’m in the slot sometimes,” the SEC’s leading receiver of 2008 said Monday. “I’m trying to extend my game to help me out and help my team.”

You’ll also probably get a glimpse  of Fred Munzenmaier, the backup fullback the past two seasons, carrying the ball at tailback.  He’s intrigued the coaches in recent practices at the position, and Richt expects him to get some tailback carries on G-Day.

Don’t look for any Knowshon-type vaults from Munzenmaier, of course. He shied away from the mention Monday that he’s playing – at least briefly – Moreno’s old position.  “I’ve attempted to dive before,” Munzenmaier said, laughing, “but it’s only when people are rolling on the ground. I don’t have ups, as they would say.”

With just two spring practices and the G-Day game to go, it’s obvious many questions will linger into summer. Injuries at tailback and defensive end have made it impossible to sort out those two very fluid positions. And  the receiving corps (aside from A.J.) remains in flux,  pending word on Durham’s shoulder and the summer arrival of highly hyped signee Marlon Brown.  Meanwhile, it’ll be interesting on G-Day to watch receivers Michael Moore (29 catches last year, six of them in the bowl) and Tavarres King (impressive this spring, according to teammates).

So . . . what will you be most interested to glean from G-Day?

More of the same and Ceph, we really don’t need the negativity. How about bringing something constructive to the blog, or change your name to Ramble On, and ramble on out of here. Let’s get back to what we are looking forward to seeing and gleaning from the G-Day game this Saturday. No need to engage jealous bugs from North Ave.

If you read the AJC’s blogs and stories carefully you will see that there is actually GOOD news buried deep in the fine print. Tavares King is an uber talent and I am eager to see him realize his potential. He is fast as crap. His speed + AJ’s ball skills = unstoppable receiving corp. That’s not hype. That’s fact. Cry about it haters.

Hey More of the same. You are obviously just pretending to be a dog fan. Go back to the Tech board with the other eight fans. if you aren’t pretending I pity you. Are you really that miserable. I really pity your family for having to live with such a horribly negative person. You may want to find a new passion…maybe something that makes you happy. That is if you are really a dog fan.

Hey Bill W…. you and ole dawg must be one of the same…. you may be the one to seek out a therapist to overcome your continual rose colored glasses and kool aide drinking addiction. Yes the Richt era is a notch above the Goof and Donnan years. 2 SEC championships and the latter with help from the lamechickens. Ah but them gators and Tigers have 2 National Championships a piece whille UGA lags……

I want to see the tight ends. I want to see Joe Cox throw a long pass. I want to see a TE screen. I want to see Carlton Thomas on a power sweep. I want to see Caleb break a run for more than a dozen yards. I want to see a kick off out of the end zone. I want to see Geno eat some blockers and a QB for lunch! Woof!

I hope Durham can avoid surgery, he’s the solid #2 WR with good size (6′5) and hands. The FBs need more carries this year, as Munzenmaier & Chapas are good options when the D is focused on the TBs &/or WR Corps.
BTW, Southerland ran a 4.6 40 y/d for those saying he was too slow! He also led the team in TDs/scoring a few seasons ago; he was grossly underutilized last season (once he returned from injury).

More of the same:

You can not judge coaches on what they can not control. We start out controlling our destiny for one thing and one thing alone and that is an SEC Championship. That LSU and UF have had the opportunity to play for the BCS when they have won the SEC while UGA has not is a product of circumstances outside of the respective coach’s control. Georgia’s 2002 and 2005 team, as well as Auburn’s 2004 team, were AS qualified as the two LSU and UF team’s that won it all. The difference is mere fortune. The fact is that we have played more SEC Champ games since Richt’s arrival that either UF or LSU. While you can credit Urban for Oregon State beating USC, I really don’t think Meyer or Tebow had anything to do with it yet that event permitted UF to play in the game. While Richt could have played OSU in the BCS had Miami not beaten a tough VT team in the season finale in 2002, I don’t think VT coming up big would have made Richt a better coach.

The lack of knowledge of all these so-called UGA fans kills me. The lack of loyalty is even worse.

Here is an idea, if Mark Richt sucks, if his coaches suck, APPLY for the job. If not, then SHUT UP and stick by your team. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Chip asked, “what are y’all looking forward to seeing?” Not, bash some people in the program and start pointing uneducated fingers.

Ole Dawg is right..get your head out of your highschool butt, more of the same. Us old farts will take care of the team thinking needed here. Take your naysaying elsewhere. You could use some rose-tinted glasses about now. My word! It’s not even Spring Game and your negative motor boat mouth is already overloading your steamboat a..hole. And quit taking my name in vain when you blog. Mine isn’t separated.

I want to see connections on plays between qbs and receivers. Who likes to find whom most often downfield? Didn’t Bailey leap over 40in? How about some comparisons with our current 42in-clearing Safety? I would think that would be interesting comparing to past stars at UGA. And current stars in the NFL.

Since Green is now “100%” does that mean that he is performing 5-10% better than last year? Is he faster and is his leap higher than before?

How do we measure success in the Spring Game? If the Offense does well does that mean that the Defense isn’t very good?.. or vice versa? The Game is only for the fans to see their beloved Dawgs playing and not to make decisions for the fall. Let’s keep everything upbeat Dawg Fans and help send the interlopers and naysayers slinking off to the sidelines of this blog.

And now CPJ has added another Dwyer (Anthony Allen, 6-1 225) to play along side Roddy Jones (214 yds in the georgie game) and Richard Watson (6-1 234 4.5 40 speed).

Your future does not look good.

Cameron- I’m beginning to think that some of these so-called Dawg fans are not. Slick posers using Dawg facts to dis one coach after another(now it’s Van Halanger) ain’t Dawgs.

Munzenmeier is training to be another Sutherland. Looks like he is good at it too! Added benefit- keep the RBs on their collective toes. They have to perform well in practice before playing in any game. No prima donnas on this team, just hard working Dawgs.

Yes, GT had two WTF games last year, one at UNC and one in the Chicken Bowl. Now georgie gets to play a much improved LSU team this year. Good luck with that one.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the fullback tokin the rock a few times in practice. We never were able to drive the ball straight up last year and it was a major role in all three losses. This year with a more mature line, I would bet 100 bucks you will see the jumbo package a few times. What did Richt say about him? “he got 5 when we needed 3″. It’s not like he is out there trying to break it wide around the corner. He is training for a specific situation.

We just may have the best batch of receivers ever put on a football field. Green, King, Troupe, Durham, etc… and get this; during last year’s high school season, a reporter asked Marlon Brown what his favorite pass play was. He said that they didn’t use regular pass plays, the QB goes to the line of scrimmage, finds an open spot on the field and throws the ball to that spot. Brown said it was his job to find the ball and use his speed to get there and make the catch… LOL… Absolutely Unreal!

I understand one of the major points of this was to show what the coaches think of Munzenmaier and thats fine. What I can’t figure out is that I’ve only seen Chapas’ name mentioned once. Where is the credit for that kid, came on out of nowhere and started playing his role extremely well. Obviously everyone has an idea of what they want to see on Saturday ,and for me, that’s one of them. Go back and watch Know’s leap at the ASU game, never happens without a great block from Chapas. Go Dawgs!!

Ole, c’mon man – you played against the LSU QB’s who threw for a combined 16 picks. They threw georgie 2 pick sixes and guess what – you won by 14.

I have the same excuse you have for losing to UF by 39 or getting 31 put on you IN YOUR HOUSE for ESPN Gameday. UF being a much bigger “must win” game for you and you crap the bed. Nice.

You won’t see GT pull that crap in a bowl game again.

I wish everyone would stop obsessing about spring football. All it is a gauge to show things you really need to work on, and to identify players who have potential to make an impact in the fall. The team is not even complete I am almost positive Marlon Brown will play this year and I don’t care who your QB is its kind of hard not to be able to get the ball to two 6′4″ recivers even if you have to throw fade routes all game. Just chill out and cheer for whatever the dawgs do in the now. We all should only start to care when the games count.
