No breakaway at tailback yet
Doesn’t sound as if anybody is off and running toward nailing down the No. 1 tailback job.
In fact, the leading rusher in Georgia’s scrimmage Monday wasn’t Caleb King or Carlton Thomas, the two healthy scholarship tailbacks currently competing for Knowshon Moreno’s old job. The leading rusher was walk-on Kalvin Daniels.
“I thought it was hot and cold, really,” Mark Richt said of the tailback play in the closed-to-the-media scrimmage. “I thought there were a couple of times we should have hit it up in there a little more physically and didn’t see it. Then the same guy the next play might really hit it up in there and break a tackle. I’d say pretty inconsistent overall.”
Richt on King: “I thought he was hot and cold.”
On Thomas: “Carlton didn’t get many yards per carry, but so far I think he’s been a little more consistent in his tempo and his willingness to stick it on in there.”
Several players mentioned that the shifty Thomas had a couple of nice runs in the scrimmage. “He took a play that was called to the right, ran and got into some traffic and reversed and ended up outrunning everybody,” QB Joe Cox said. But Thomas’ scrimmage stats – eight carries for 26 yards – weren’t much.
(King had six carries for 32 yards. Daniels nine carries for 45 yards.)
Georgia expects to get Dontavius Jackson, who had arthroscopic knee surgery in December, back into the tailback mix before the end of spring practice – possibly this week. Then Richard Samuel, out this spring after wrist surgery, is expected to join the competition come summer.
The Dogs had a habit in their three losses last season of letting bad situations snowball. And apparently they showed a bit of the same tendency in Monday’s scrimmage.
“I think we’ve got to handle adversity on both sides of the ball a little better,” Richt said afterward.
The defense was playing well in the early going, he said, but “started feeling sorry for themselves” after a 75-yard pass from freshman QB Aaron Murray to senior walk-on receiver Vernon Spellman.
“We got to understand things won’t always go our way, and we got to recover quickly and get back and play ball,” Richt said.
He said he made that point to the team after the scrimmage.
“So now the leaders got to do something about it.”
So what’s it like when college football coaches are recruiting the son of a college football coach?
“I don’t think anybody is going to feed me a bunch of baloney,” Richt said Monday.
Two days earlier, he and his son, Jon, were at Valdosta State, where Jon — a quarterback seeking a new school after leaving Clemson this spring — is considering transferring. They watched a Blazers scrimmage, sat in on a quarterbacks meeting, got an academics briefing and enjoyed a campus tour.
“I’d never been to Valdosta State before, and it’s a beautiful campus,” Richt said. “It’s about the right size, and I think he’d really feel comfortable.”
Richt said his son has already visited Georgia State, which will field its first football team in 2010, and also is considering Chattanooga and Mars Hill. “Maybe a couple more. A few more people are calling.” And the recruiting experience, Jon’s father said, is going well. “I enjoy it. It’s fun. . . . Everybody has just been great.”

I’m just glad to hear that maybe Coach Richt will be harder to please this year and not accept poor play on the O or the D. He needs to keep the pressure on these guys until he truly gets the effort that will bring out the best in them. With the star count by most of these player’s names, there is no reason why we should not get the same type of production from them as Bama, LSU, and UF. Every coach we have can probably learn something from Coach Searels, including MR.

Richard Samuel is a good bit faster than any of the other backs and he certainly is the biggest. He is being coached to run with better body lean and he had some trouble holding onto the ball, but I expect him to emerge as the top RB once he returns.
Murray certainly had some nice stats. Was he playing against the first team defense?

DOH! – a walk-on receiver and a high school quarterback burn the D for a 75 yard TD – I bet UF, UT, GT and the rest of the SEC are licking their chops reading about that! AS I said last week – ain’t nobody on this team that runs a 4.25, and it sounds as though that 4.3 that was supposedly run by that “new safety” ain’t there either!

Roddy Jones in a I formation doing what he did at Tech is laughable. He is a wing back not a I back. It’s much harder to run the ball out of a I set than it is getting the ball on a pitch play or a end around when the qb is trying to trick the defense with his ball fakes to the B back. Know your football before you post about football.

Guys, this is SPRING practice. This is set up time, time to make mistakes, time to try new things. Starting jobs are not won or lost in March and April. I remember hearing all sorts of great things about taillbacks in the spring only to never see them in the fall. Everything will be fine and, yes, the Dawgs will be in a bowl.
I do agree with handling adversity better, that was a weakness in 08′.

Chip, when are you (or better, frakking Mark Richt) going to wake up to the fact that Willie Martinez is at the heart of the defensive problems on this team.
Every single problem involving the defense can be pointed to mediocre coaching.
Penalties? Coaching.
Refusal to adapt the gameplan to what offenses are giving you? Coaching.
Poor player attitudes? Coaching.
Lack of player confidence? Hmmm… wonder why they lack confidence? Could it be they have no confidence that their defensive coordinator can bring them back?
You want to point to injuries and blame the players only, like Mark Richt does? Fine. But you (and he) are ignoring the heart of the problem.
If they’re running the same defensive plans, schemes, or philosophy since Van Gorter left, then why has the team gotten progressively worse in total defense and scoring defense every single year since he left?
Why did the bottom fall out last year?
Willie Martinez.
The only reason for the turnaround in 2007 I can see is Marcus Howard. The last standout defensive player to receive coaching from Van Gorter. He took over games. He provided the pass rush that Georgia always seems to need from the defensive end under Martinez, because Martinez either won’t, or as I believe, can’t find a way to create pressure if it’s not coming from his down lineman because he is simply out of his element and not creative enough to do so.
Mark my words, the defense on this team will again fall short. And again Mark Richt will blame the players.
But the real problem is that Willie Martinez is failing his players, and Mark Richt should have never given him the job as DC, and his refusal to fire Martinez after FOUR YEARS of declining results (which is a TREND and not a coincidence as Chip and Altamaha and Richt try to make us believe) is only making matters worse.
This team will win 9 games if it’s lucky. Count on losses to Florida, LSU, and Georgia Tech for sure. Watch out for South Carolina, Oklahoma State, and even Arizona State.
We may be looking at a six loss season. And I’m not joking.
How many more 30 point games are you going to let Willie give up, Coach?
How many more 40 point games?
How many more double-digit losses?
In his four years alone, Willie Martinez is already in the running for worst defensive coordinator in Georgia history.
And yet, Coach Richt continues to blame the players.
Oh, and they’re best friends.

Tech people talking up Stephen Hill, thats funny. You got to try and talk up a 3 star receiver,who really wanted to go to UGA, and hasnt even played a down as your best and only receiver. Have you noticed in the photos of the UGA players lifting weights there is a mat with the Tech score in front of one of the stations reminding them of it everyday. When the world is put back into order and Tech gets destroyed next year all of you parasite Tech fans that use to stay in the closet, and not even come close to a UGA blog, will go lock yourselves back in for another multiple amount of years.

The entire story will be told in December. We must endure the season till then. All questions concerning the defense will be crystal clear by then. If we are horrific again on D, then Richt will be forced by the $$$ alum to DUMP Martinez. The O will come along nicely, as it is scheme driven, with or w.o. Stafford directing the atack.
Tailback will be done by comittee and with the Fullbacks lso doing some heavy lifting by rushing and pass receiving. The running game will be fine, the short to medium passing game also will be fine.
It is D that the alums will be looking to improve and if it is not evident, then CMR will be forced to start anew with Head D Coach.

okay,everyone, here are some facts about the scrimmage, the long td pass came on a 7-8 yard slant with the safeties on a blitz. it was more of a short pass with a long run for a td..CWM evidently hear’s all of us and is working on the blitz thing, the only negative about this is that with our tackling ability, we will be very suspect to give up the big play..and no, this team can’t have it both ways, we either play a lil soft and make the other team drive the ball down field,or we take some chances and if we don’t succeed,we get burned..but with all that said, the biggest glaring problem that we still have is at DE.. there won’t be an answer for that coming out of spring from what i’m being told.
oh, and as far as the running situation, we’re making very little progress there now for a couple of reasons,,,one is that they’re trying to find out who can run between the tackles and be strong enough to endure the punishment, which leads to the next point, the defensive tackles are dominating these practices..now there’s two ways to take this, which is,great,our DT are going to be outstanding, or holy sh*t, our offensive line is struggling a lil. i’m being told that the latter is what is happening right now…but not to panic too much, we are still missing a couple of lineman this spring…
i’ll check back in a while with some more valuable info.. see ya

Appears as if no one has the fire that Knowshon had. Didn’t he go 120 mph out of the gate all the time, even in practice? No doubts about who was going to be the main RB when he was around. Hope these kids can start emulating him, that might set the tone for #1 RB.

Worse than Martinez being given another year is the promotion of Jancek to Co-DC. A good LB coach over the past four years could very well have hidden CWM’s poor job at DC. Jancek, however, has been horrible on every front – the kids are in the wrong spots, they don’t know how to react, they can’t tackle, and their persuit is half-hearted at best. To promote this type of work is of great concern. At the very least, after last season we should have dumped Jancek and brought in a real LB coach. Instead we give him more responsibility?
We better have a great RB – we’re gonna need to score in the forties on a regular basis.

I just hope Cox stays healthy. If he goes down, it is 2006 all over again.
I’m actually surprised Caleb King is still in school. I predicted he wouldn’t be. Since I was wrong about that, perhaps I’m wrong about him being “the man”. But I’ve never seen him try to run over a defender or have any moxy whatsoever. Perhaps he just never got over the broken leg injury. I have never broken a leg so I can’t judge or call him a pansy. But it just seems like he’s running not to injure himself.
Samuel and D. Jackson need to hurry on back!!! And if the RB’s are not getting it done, put Logan Gray in there to offset our lack of a rushing attack. It would be great if we could use him every so often just to give opposing DC’s something to think about and prepare for. Merely showcasing Gray can do wonders for our offense since opposing teams will have to practice for two kinds of offenses.

It is another great day to be a Georgia Bulldog when you read about the Dogs preparing for another super season. It can not get here soon enough. However, it is good to read that Coach is coaching up his team a little tougher this Spring. IDK, maybe we need to change up our workout regimen.. I’m just speculating, I’m all for our players to get strong, setting bench records etc.. but, I think it caused some of their flexibility. I’ve noticed some of the NFL players are not lifting as much weight, but they’re doing more unorthodox flexible training.. meaning, less power lifting and more of stretching or mobility type of workout, if you will. Maybe somebody else can explain it better. Coach Van is an excellent SC coach, btw.

Fellas, the 2006 and 2008 spring practices went rather smooth, maybe a little too smooth. Aside from the worst injury situation I’ve ever seen, we had some major flaws in execution and attitude last year on the football field. The part about letting a bad situation snow ball was dead on. I’m glad that these tendencies are rearing their ugly heads right now. Because the coaches need to work on these things. The players also need to realize right now that 2009 can resemble 2002 or 2005, or it can also be a repeat of the beginning of 2006 or 2008. Now is the time to get their attention and let them decide what they want.
Nothing will be handed to them. And there should be a sense of needing re-prove themselves and the program. Gotta get that urgency back.

Is it true? I heard that the thUGA coaching staff traded all their tackling dummies for Hospital signs this spring so any videos that turn up on Youtube in the future will just look like normal practices.
