Georgia’s Pro Day attracts NFL Who’s Who

Editor’s Note: Chip Towers provided updates throughout UGA’s Pro Day and all of them are listed below. Some of the notables: RB Knowshon Moreno turned in a 4.63 in the 40-yard dash while DB Asher Allen turned in a blazing 4.33. QB Matthew Stafford ended the day with several impressive throws. DB C.J. Byrd, LB Dannell Ellerbe and WR Mohamed Massaqoui helped themselves with fast times in the 40.

Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno will be on the field again for Georgia today. Check that: They’ll be on Georgia’s fields but it will be for themselves.

Representatives of all 32 NFL teams — and in some cases three or four from each team — will be on hand as the Bulldogs’ two offensive stars from this past season, along with 12 other UGA players, show off their wares for NFL scouts.

Georgia coach Mark Richt said it may be the Bulldogs’ biggest Pro Day since he and his staff came to Athens. Strength and conditioning director Dave Van Halanger, who organizes and oversees the event, wasn’t so sure. He remembers the first year, when Georgia had Richard Seymour and Marcus Stroud and Kendrell Bell, as being a well-attended event. And certainly there was a lot of buzz when David Pollack and David Greene and Thomas Davis came out in 2004.

But in Stafford and Moreno the Bulldogs have produced two players that could be early first-round picks. And in the case of Stafford, VERY early. Some have projected him as the No. 1 overall pick.

The main reason for the incredible turnout is Stafford chose not to throw at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis last month. He chose to throw to his own recivers — Mohamed Massaquoi, Demiko Goodman and Kenneth Harris — on his own fields. And the beneficiaries of that decision, including Stafford and Moreno, are Georgia and the 12 other players hoping to get their name called during the NFL draft.

“Matthew’s decision to throw here and not there, that was up to him. . . . I don’t get into the middle of that decision,” coach Mark Richt said. “But the fact that Matthew is doing it here is a big deal because he will attract a big crowd. Even if those guys weren’t here we’d have a solid Pro Day. But with both those guys being here it’s going to be a bigger crowd than we normally get.”

Because Stafford is being considered for the top spot, more actual NFL coaches and executives are expected to be in town rather than just scouts.

Said Richt: “I can’t predict who’s coming but I’m sure there are going to be some big-name coaches, head coaches and position coaches. I would think GMs will be here. I think you’ll see a great representation of the NFL coming to our campus, which is super.”

Richt is encouraging the current Bulldogs to come out and watch their former teammates for motivation if nothing else.

“It’s a job interview for the dream of their lifetime,” Richt said. “So I told our guys to come watch their teammates interview for a job in the NFL. I want that to motivate them. I them to be excited about it.”

Other UGA players showing off for the scouts Thursday: Receivers Mohamed Massaquoi, Kenneth Harris and Demiko Goodman; cornerbacks Asher Allen and Ramarcus Brown; fullback Brannan Southerland; linebacker Dannell Ellerbe; defensive tackle Corvey Irvin; defensive ends Jeremy Lomax and Jarius Wynn; safety CJ Byrd; and punter Brian Mimbs.

I am somewhat curious. Since the event is not open to the public in general, can UGA still invite recruits? If so, would it include those in the 2010 class as well as those in this years class that have already signed LOI with UGA?

@Boston Williams, nice to know. A championship should be the last thing on anyone’s mind for next year with Joe Cox as our QB and a mostly unproven running back (whoever it ends up being). If we win the SEC East that would be huge in and of itself. Anything else would be a bonus.

Unbelievable scene over here at the Butts-Mehre Building. Hundreds of people, agents, trainers, families, media. Never seen anything like it. . . .

Deion Sanders is here. Remarcus Brown is training with his group “Train U.” . . .

Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff hanging out by the broad jump. Jarius Wynn was best of big men at 9 feet, 7 inches. Biggest buzz was over CJ Byrd. Officially he got 10-4 but he literally jumped off the mat on one jump but fell back, so it was a scratch. But would’ve been 11 feet! . . . I believe MoMass and Jeremy Lomax scratched despite long jumps. Stafford and Moreno didn’t jump and went with their combine numbers.

Just so you know our D. Orlando Ledbetter — affectionately, “D-Led,” is here and feeding me info as it happens. . . .

They’ve moved to bench press now and that’s taken the intensity through the roof. Everybody is cheering on the players. Kenneth Harris on the bench first — did 12 — and now CJ Byrd. Byrd apparently just wowed them based on the cheers. I can’t see from where I am. Too many folks crowded around. . . .

Remarcus Brown going now. 13 reps of what I think is 225 pounds.

Just met Thomas Dimitroff for the first time. Nice guy. Very accommodating. Said the turnout here today was one of the best he’s seen, right up there with Texas and Southern Cal. . . . Dimitroff, of course, started in the scouting ranks. He said he feels “like an outsider” because he’s not up there in the middle of the bench press. . . .

Speaking of bench press, Corvey Irvin did 24 but wasn’t happy with it. . . .

Lot of current and former Georgia players around. Just talked to Randall Godfrey. Antavious Coates making the rounds. Fairly certain I saw George Foster, who’s rocking dreads these days. . . .

Talked to Stafford for a minute. Said he’s been practicing with MoMass and Harris and Goodman the last few days in the early afternoon. They don’t throw until about 12:15 p.m. but it’s looking like it may run late.

For Stafford’s sake, I hope he doesn’t get drafted by Detroit. That will ruin his career. His best bet IMO is to go to the 49ers. Much less pressure there to perform right away, a great program there instead of a horrible one at Detroit, and good coaching.

Obviously he would like to be #1 pick, but the odds are so far against him making it there that it’d be better for him in the long term to go to a different team.

DG- No offense, but the Lions have sucked for many years. They’ve had great QB’s come in there and get ruined by the program. I agree with you that they’d be better off getting a good lineman. A good QB will not solve all their problems.

I’m just saying it’s better for Detroit and Stafford if he doesn’t go there. I do give you credit for standing by your team when they’ve done as poorly as they have for quite some time now. Browns fans here in Ohio are the same way. Very loyal to their team.

The Lions would be….the same ole Lions if they take Curry at #1 and don’t get a QB in rnd 1. Look at the NFL: the last 4 Super Bowl winners started first round QB’s. 8 of the 12 teams in the playoffs last year started first round QB’s. Golden Rule of the NFL Draft: “If a team doesn’t have a franchise QB or a young QB with serious franchise potential, they shouldn’t pass on one.” The Lions do not have a franchise QB or a QB with franchise potential.

gdawginkalamazoo

DG, I will have to agree to disagree with you on the Stafford pick. With 10%+ umemployment in Michigan, a new headcoach and supposedly new attitude with the Lions I think Stafford first, for the pure spark of excitement and a new franchise foundation, then get some linemen later. Plenty of those cats out there to be picked. Detroit isn’t even close to being in the situation like the Dolphins when they drafted Long. Remember they got Pennington in right away to help that cause. Peppy is a crutch player and Stanton is a great career back-up QB. Knowing Detroit if they don’t pick the QB this year they will win 8 games and not be in a position to get Bradford, McCoy or any of the other QB’s coming out. Being a fan of the team/management that ran the greastest RB in the history of the NFL out early I will just watch in amazement on draft day when they probably do something they shouldn’t. BTW, I don’t think Cutler is the answer either. Just a little bit too high on himself. Not the attitude that Detroit needs. All this is just my opinion though, right or wrong.

good points, gdawg. gotta agree with the cutler assessment which is why i don’t think mayhew will break the bank to get him. his motto has been ‘right player, right price’ and i don’t want cutler here if he’s gonna break the bank. i too also question his attitude and his arrogance. i’m also sure that his agent is not exactly blame free either. he’s in cutler’s ear filling his already over sized head up with a whole bunch of nonsense about what he’s entitled to and whatnot. i want cutler here but only if he sucks it up like a man and quits pouting about the whole situation and he doesn’t break the bank for us….time will tell if that’ll happen though.

Barry Sanders was never known as a top speed guy. He was lightening quick, but had to work on his top speed. He was caught from behind quite a bit. I think cutler is getting a bad rap. I don’t think he is as big of a crybaby as what is being portrayed. Look at the top story on espn. His agent listed the detailed meetings between cutler and the broncos. I think the broncos lied to him and ticked him off.

DG

still though, it’s impressive and ironic that our current GM actually can say that he ran down barry sanders from behind twice [maybe more]. as for never seeing an RB like him again….not so sure about that. his son has quietly been creeping up on the radar and wouldn’t that be just awesome if we were able to draft him several years from now?

matt

March 19th, 2009
11:39 am

I’m gonna be a big lions fan watching staff toss it to calvin. The lions need a franchise face just like the falcs did last year, and Matt’s the guy.

Knowshon doesn’t have top end speed. We all knew that, watching him get run down from behind by that defensive back this year. To my eyes, he lost a step this last season, maybe from adding the muscle. His shiftiness will more than make up for it. If there’s a better back in the draft, it’s a sleeper … definitely not beanie.

Chip Towers

March 19th, 2009
11:39 am

Knowshon’s second run was a 4.63. . . . I think we’re finding out what everybody already knew — Moreno is not blazing fast but his moves and vision make him a great back. . . . Fact is it’ll probably cost him a few spots because the NFL way is to find a way to devalue someone. But I still think he’ll be a great NFL back.

Huh?

March 19th, 2009
11:40 am

So Moreno won’t be breaking any track & field records. Big deal. If these scouts are smart they won’t put much weight on his 40 time. I’m not one of those that thinks it is totally irrelevant but in Moreno’s case it just may be. There is no test that can measure what this guy brings to the table.

Knowshon reminds of Emmit Smith. Doesn’t have blazing breakaway speed but has great vision and can make a cut into the hole at full speed with a lot of power. He will be a great NFL back.

I think I tend to agree with TMQ when it comes to 40 times. Football plays aren’t always made based on hundredths of a second. Jerry Rice wasn’t straight line fast, but no one was better maintaining speed through their breaks. Knowshon will be fine.

I also laugh when people say someone’s stock is dropping. Dropping from where? Where someone predicted them. Truth is: where you are picked is what your stock is. I may think I can sell something for more than its worth, but if I can’t, it’s because its not worth it.

It’s why I believe all the Andre Smith stuff is a smoke screen.

There is a big difference between “track” speed and “game” speed in full pads. I think we all know that Knowshon has “game” speed. I don’t ever recall someone chasing him down from behind in a straight line sprint. If LSU’s secondary can’t chase him down in a straight sprint, not many NFL DB’s will be able to either….

gdawg – The Lions didn’t draft Mitchell, he was aquired from Miami. No offense to the Bulldog faithful but the “potential” that Stafford has is shadowed by concerns with his accuracy and mental ability to adjust to the speed of the NFL. He is not a “can’t miss” QB. If Bradford and McCoy came out this year, Stafford would be the forth QB taken even behind Sanchez. The big name QB’s coming out next year are all system QB’s working out of the spread or at least not a pro-style set like Georgia uses. Stafford would still be number 1 and probably a more entrenched #1 than he is this year after a very successful senior year. Tebow, btw, will NOT play QB in the NFL and if that is the case he’s already said he’ll take his ball and go home. His dad has whined to the NFL that that is the case.

The Lions should NOT draft Stafford #1.

Not because Stafford isn’t grading out well, or isn’t talent, but because Detroit’s current team is not a good situation for a Rookie QB to come into. Both Ryan and Flacco last year (Roethlisberger a few years ago) experienced a lot of success because they came to teams with solid (or better) defenses, and bruising running games. Both of those things will help take pressure off a Rookie QB and allow him to learn and simply run the offense.

Detroit has a terrible defense, and while RB Kevin Smith is a talent, they don’t have the consistency on the offensive line to support him. Look for Schwartz to upgrade the defensive and offensive lines, THEN start looking for a QB.

What amazes me is not the ignorant banter that goes on here among fan-spectators, but the lazy reporting by obviously biased media-types. Most work on a herd mentality and simply say what they hear others say, usually out of their own uninformed bias.

For instance, this kid named Chris Steuber who contributes on Scout and ESPN. He’s been bashing Staff relentlessly for some time now and judging from his remarks shows himself to be a really biased dumb___. His quote on a recent blog discussion with another reporter was, …why would anyone draft “some junior” like Stafford “FROM A SCHOOL LIKE GEORGIA?”

Well now, considering that New England has pretty much had a dynasty helped by drafting players from UGA and that there are more active players in the NFL from UGA than from any school except Miami (if memory serves), I’d say that that statement qualifies Mr. Steuber as a biased idiot who apparently only repeats what he hears others say. Simply incredible that a major media outlet would hire someone like that and call them an NFL Draft Analyst!!

Looks like it’s over. I have to say for what it is this was pretty exciting. And you cannot deny the positive impact it has to have on Georgia. Every NFL team here. NFL.com and NFL Live. ESPN. All the Atlanta television stations. Me. You!

It definitely helps your program when you produce two junior players that may well be drafted No. 1 at their position, as Stafford and Moreno could. And some other guys may go early as well.

CB Asher Allen definitely helped himself today. I think CJ Byrd and Dannell Ellerbe probably did, too. Mohamed Massaquoi running a sub-4.5 was good for him.

Ramarcus Brown tweaking his hammy wasn’t good for him, obviously. Knowshon would have liked to run sub-4.6 but I honestly don’t think it’s going to affect his draft status much. These guys are football experts and they know that’s not what makes him special.

Can you imagine what the insect pro day will be like? Probably like a home game; empty stadium, with a few people milling around, LOL.

I also have to wonder if recruits from GA that went to other schools are reading this blog and thinking; oh god, I should have gone to UGA. Not to mention current recruits, who are just drooling at the opportunity to showcase there talent at an event like this; lets see if I were a WR would want Logan Grey, Aaron Murray or Zach Mettenberger throwing me the ball in front of NFL GM’s and coaches or Calvin Booker, Doc Coppage, Bryce Dykes, Josh Nesbitt or Jaybo Shaw? I think the team that throws the ball half the time has better QB’s, what do you think?

Hey, I tried to forget Mitchell’s name much less where he came from. Congrats to Stafford and the receivers hope it was a good show. To say that Detroit needs to wait till next year to get the QB is crazy. They have two picks this year in round one. Get the QB with the first then the OL with the next.

BC, every single player out there is a potential bust, Stafford included. IMO if Stafford had come back for his senior year he would still be in the same position he is today. Bradford and McCoy would be close behind. The people questioning his mental ability to adapt to the pro level haven’t watched a lot of Georgia football the past three years. Stafford is dedicated. He is a hard worker, he is more a student of the game than people give him credit for.

Here’s the upside on Knowshon. He has great footwork and can change direction on a dime. Plus, he doesn’t get hurt often. He’s not beat up.

The downside is he can get sucked up once he breaks through. He’s just not that fast. But someon said something about Emmitt Smith, and I agree. He can get a lot of carries and keep going like Emmitt. But he’s going to have to mature like Emmitt.

Stafford isn’t going out of the top 8 so why were the other 24 teams there???? Answer: To see Knowshon and a few of the others. Knowshon has been projected as a mid to late pick. That’s appx 15 teams he could possibly go to. Make no mistake. 32 teams didn’t show up to see Stafford!!!

Hey IntheD

The Lions are in the beginning stages of a massive rebuild…Stafford will be redshirted his first year and developed much like Rivers and Carson Palmer did…They have plenty of time to build the Offensive line.

Stafford helped Georgia win THREE bowl games in three years….BTW he is still only 20 years old and has every bit as much talent as Cutler did coming out of college..Get a clue.

Some more on Herschel just for fun:

Knowshon’s a great guy and a terrific running back but the HW comparisons just don’t make sense. They’re two very different people, physically, and very different runners. Knowshon’s a shifty guy, not a speed guy (as he’s showed today). Ask Gayle Sayers, Barry Sanders, et al. if shifty is a good thing.

HW was more of a straight away runner with exceptional strength who hit a hole and was impossible to catch when in space. Impossible. And for his size, HW was simply a freak of nature. He remains the 8th leading all-purpose yardage gainer in NFL history even today, despite having spent his first 3 years in the USFL.

In 2002 Herschel Walker was voted into the Collegiate Football Hall of Fame, and was selected as the second greatest player in college football history, behind only the legendary Red Grange. That’s opinion, sure, but from football people, not the blogsphere.

But, back to times.

HW was 6-2 and somewhere between 222-225 lbs. He ran a 9.9 100 yards dash as a junior in high school and went on to become a world class sprinter even while playing football. He was a two-time All American in TRACK (outdoor 4×100 relay and indoor 60) at UGA. There is legend that he beat Daryl Green in a footrace but I don’t know anybody who can confirm that. Let’s just say he was damned fast. People like to remember his running over people but did you ever see him caught from behind, ever, even with an angle? No. He blew through the angle. The rules just didn’t apply to a man that size going that fast.

And, in track, they time you officially, folks. So, the “He was probably a 4.xx man” conjecture is simply foolishness. Based on nothing, except maybe wishful (negative) thinking.

HW ran track at UGA with Mel Lattany, one of UGA’s fastest sprinters ever (the first collegian to ever win the same event (the 100) four times at the Drake Relays, for example). Mel was quoted as saying that if Herschel trained solely in track, he thought HW would beat him. At 222 lbs.

That’s just flat fast.

He was also the valedictorian of his high school with a straight-A average and led his team to state championships in football and track. Why some people still seem intent on smacking this guy down is beyond me. Simply silly and tells you much more about them than about him.

But, as for football, you simply had to see him in the open field to truly appreciate him.

I believe Knowshon will go on to have a wonderful NFL career. But, as for speed alone, I expect HW might outrun him even today. BTW, HW still does his 2,500 situps and 1,500 pushups every morning.

IntheD

3:11 pm

I’m sure Lions fans will be fired up to know that the #1 pick will sit with all the needs they have. Stafford beat Hawaii and MSU in 2 of those bowls, hardly impressive wins. He wasn’t even the best QB in the SEC. Nor did he lead his teams to any championships. Chronic underacheiver and doesn’t have prototypical NFL size either. Hey, you guys might be dumb enough to take him. You guys should at least try to become competative next year and take a QB next year. Sounds like what you guys always do though, go for the position instead of building a team. How many first round defensive players did you guys take in the Millen era? 1 maybe? You guys are brainwashed by your ownership and Millen.

All this paper does is blog about Tenn.’s new coach, or Stafford&Moreno. Enough, who cares about 2 players that never gave a rat’s ass about UGA, and a loser coach that has never won a game in the SEC. Typical blogs by sports writers that have no clue about what is important to UGA fans. How about blogs about UGA’s coach, or heres a great idea, how about blogs about players that are still on team, and care about winning games and championships, not about themselves like Stafford & Moreno. Moreno has no speed, and that bull sh.. of him jumping up after runs in the NFL will get his head caved in. And as far as Stafford, he is the most overrated Q.B. that ever played at UGA. This guy will only get you beat. He will throw a terrible interception or two in every big game. Don’t believe me, how about Fl. 2007, returned for t.d. with no UGA receiver within 10 yards of pass, or how about Fl. 2008, his int. at the start of 3rd qtr that was returned to the 1 yard line, was only a 14 pt. swing. Or how about his 2 ints. against Tenn. last year in the redzone, that Tenn. turned into 14 pts. the only points they had. But I think this loser saved his best int. for the best game, against Tech. with UGA gaining control of game, what does BRAINDEAD stafford do, throws an int to Burnett for a quick 7, that keeps tech in game. If not for his bonehead throw, UGA is up 28-6 at half. Please blog about someone that matters, not these two ego maniacs.

And further, since we’ve got so many interested, I’ve been lobbying for a change – actually, just talking about it on line – in the NCAA’s eligibility rules to allow any former player that has eligibility remaining, once they reach the age of 40, that they could come back to complete said eligibility.
